Great!.......2006-12-18
This book is great and very informative. A must have for any corn snake enthusiasts!
corn snake manual.......2005-10-24
a very well thought out book for beginers as it tells you all you need to know about keeping your snake healthy and well and to enjoy your snake
Very Specific for somebody who is slightly familiar w/ snakes.......2005-09-15
My family is in the market for a "Corn." We are actually looking to purchase one from the author of the book. It is very descriptive and detailed. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars is because we've never owned a snake and I think a check-list on what is recommended to buy before your snake arrives should've been included, along with how often to clean the aquarium and exactly how to clean it (just scoop out individual messes, or the whole she-bang). Anyway. It's excellent and informative and highly recommended!
Great resource for corn owners.......2004-05-14
I recently bought my first pet Corn, and picked this guide up as a reference for my new baby snake. This book is considered the bible of corn snake ownership, and for good reason. It's massively thorough, covering every topic a new snake owner needs to know about, as well as some other interesting stuff. I particularly enjoyed the section on genetics and the history of the different morphs.
My only nitpick is that the authors state a lot of their personal opinions about the value of different colors and patterns as if they're universal--they actually call dark colors "ugly" at one point, whereas I find them the most appealing. It would be better if they could remain objective, and simply present the facts.
Very Handy to Have Around!.......2004-01-24
I Bought this book the day I got my corn snake, Sayuri. It has been very handy to have around:) Most of the information can be found online for free, but it's very convenient to have all in one place at a moments notice. When I got my snakes (I also have a milk snake) they were living with no heat or light source in their own filth, and scummy nyquil caps used for "water bowls." I figured that even though I'm a beginner, I couldn't do any worse. My snakes now have CLEAN cages, CLEAN water dishes large enough for them to soak in, proper lighting and under cage heat sources, fresh clean substrate, and they are very active and (I assume) happy ^_^

Lack-Luster At Best.......2006-05-05
To be perfectly honest, I expected more after reading the other online reviews of this book. Bill and Kathy Love are THE corn snake experts in America, but this book just seems to be a re-hash of their earlier articles and works. The pictures were excellent, but so far as all around quality goes, I think one of the "Philip" experts is the one to trust: Philippe de Vosjoli is a veteran of the field with AMAZING books, and Phil Purser is an authority on corn snakes who is actually a readable writer.
I think a veteran keeper could augment his/her library with this text, but the average hobbyist should probably look elsewhere. I was much happier with the **other** corn snake book I purchased.
The Definitive Word on Corn Snakes.......2006-03-08
This book came highly recommended to me by snake breeders. The material is wonderful, easy to comprehend and THE absolute resource for the beginner or advanced owner. Definite bang for the buck and wisdom shared by folks who have made raising corns on of their life's work. From the hatching to elder years, this book has it all.
Six Star Rating.......2005-12-22
I'd give it six stars if I could. It's very entertaining, very educational, complete, and packed with plenty of color photos. The writing style is informal, present-day North American English.
What more could you ask for in a book? An autographed copy, that's what.
An absolute must.......2005-04-30
If you are planning on owning a corn snake, this one and The art of keeping snakes by Phillipe de Vosjoli should be the first books to buy. Read it before you purchase the animal!

very complete.......2006-12-18
I feel that this book is very complete and extremely helpful. If you own or are interested in corns pick this up because it will be helpful, also the offer lists some considerations before purchasing a corn which is great to see.
Best book of its kind.......2006-05-05
One of the most reader-friendly and authoritative books of its kind Ive ever read. Not only does this book give a solid outline of the natural history of these snakes, but it also answers (Thoroughly!) all the questions/issues that might arise in the captive care/breeding of the corn and rat snakes.
The author, Phil Purser, is an authority on these snakes whom I once had the honor of meeting at a university lecture; his name on a book about herps is a definite stamp-of-quality.
If you have to buy a corn snake book, THIS IS THE ONE!!!!

Everything you wanted to know!.......2000-04-06
This book is excellent for beginning snake hobbyists. It covers corn snake care, breeding and housing. The book also included some excellent pictures of the different kinds of corn snakes. Along with providing helpful hints to keeping your snake healthy, the book provides information on the correct way to obtain your first snake! In my opinion, the best part about this book was the detailed way the authors take the reader step-by-step on constructing an incubator for snake hatching. Everything in the book is well organized to provide easy reference. At the end, a helpful glossary also allows easy reference. I would recommend this book to a snake hobbyist that is interested in keeping and breeding snakes to learn the correct ways to maintain a snake's health and overall happiness.

Must Have - 5 Stars Book.......2007-02-01
I purchased this book in my research for information before purchasing my first snake with my grandson. This book is a MUST for anyone looking for information on care, feeding, housing, breeding and anything else about corn snakes. After reading this book I purchased our first corn snake from the author. It answered just about all of my questions and the author helped me with everything else so I was really prepared when our snake arrived. Interesting book even if you don't own a snake!
Best Corn Snake Book In Print.......2007-01-04
This is, quite simply, the best book on corn snakes in print. I'm astonished that Amazon seems not to have it in stock (as of Jan. 06). Don't be deceived by the series title (Professional Breeders)--this is a book that all corn snake owners (or prospective owners) should have, including those who have no interest in breeding methods (although the breeding section does a better job of describing the various morphs to prospective buyers than any other corn snake book I've seen). The author--Don Soderberg, one of the most prominent breeders in the field--walks the prospective owner through the process of preparing for and buying a corn snake in great detail--I can't think of anything that has been missed here. Every contingency (including illness and escape) has been covered, and even experienced owners will find this volume to be useful. A good example is the author's discussion of vivarium temperatures. Most corn snake books (and online resources) simply say there should be an 85* warm side and a 75* cool side. But rarely do these sources say where the temperature reading should be taken--and when they do, they often provide contradictory, or illogical advice. This volume not only provides a detailed explanation for how to establish temperatures in your vivarium, it also provides a strong argument for why such a method is best. After spending six months reading everything I could find on corn snake care before purchasing my first snake, I have found this book to be more useful than anything else I have looked at.

Must have for Corn Snake Fanciers.......2005-12-17
The photographs are breathtaking; so much so that you want to see more. It's concise and intelligently written. This book should be in every corn snake fancier's library.
Dated, but still an excellent primer on corn snake genetics.......2001-07-21
So many new corn snake color morphs have been developed since this book was first published that its coverage of the morphs that existed at the time seems a bit dated. Nevertheless, this book is still of considerable use to corn snake breeders, as well as anyone else interested in breeding for recessive traits, for its clear explanation of Mendelian rules of inheritance. Novice corn snake keepers ask too often the question of what you get when you breed this kind of corn snake with that kind; after reading this book, they'll be able to figure it out for themselves.
Readers interested in descriptions of the latest corn snake morphs, and how they're made, should consult The Corn Snake Manual by Bill and Kathy Love.
One of the Best.......2000-05-26
Although somewhat small in size and length (especially at a first glance), this book is packed with great, surplus info about every factor that makes up corn snakes and their appearance. It first gives a short explanation of what a corn snake is and details about the general species, and then goes straight into what makes up and causes corn snakes' coloring and markings. This book explains all types of corn snake morphs, phases, mutations, changes, and more about how different-looking kinds of these snakes surface and how they occur. It even explains breeding techniques and possibilities for breeding such different phases, morphs, and mutations. This book doesn't provide much general info on the species, such as captive care, so I thus recommend it for people who already know the general care and maintenance of these snakes. Therefor, it's best for those who are interested in collecting and even breeding these colorful kinds and varieties of snakes, as it explains much of that subject. So altogether, I believe this book is one of the best for explaining it's subject clearly and thoroughly, and there aren't many books that could have explained it better.

Customer Reviews:
One to avoid; there are better guides out there.......2001-07-21
This is easily the least-informed and the worst-written of the corn snake manuals in print today. Those needing a book on keeping corn snakes in captivity would be better off buying one of the following: Corn Snakes, by R. D. Bartlett and Patricia Bartlett; Corn Snakes and Other Rat Snakes, also by Bartlett and Bartlett; and especially The Corn Snake Manual, by Bill and Kathy Love. The first of these is excellent for beginners, the last, by the Loves, is the definitive book on the species. Better yet, buy all three of them, learn, and enjoy.
A great source for beginners with snakes.......1997-10-08
I read this book when I first decided to buy a corn
snake. This book gave me a good impression of how
to care for my corn snake. As a beginner with snakes, it served
as adequate background information. However,if
you are seriously considering buying and
caring for a corn snake, it would behoove you to
consult another source as well. Do not use this book
as the bible on how to care for your snake. Since reading
this book, I have discovered many discrepancies in the text. The book is not necessarily wrong, but it suggests that there
are certain ways to care for your snake that are
preferable, whereas in reality, there are many other ways, some
of which are preferable over the ways the book suggests.
However, this book is a very interesting source for
background information on corn and red rat snakes.

Comprehensive guide........1997-08-19
This work contains more USEFUL information on
houseplants in one volume than you might find in a
shelf of other books.
The author starts with basic understanding of the
plants and explains them as broad and useful
categories; e.g., flowering plants, foliage plants,
bromeliads, succulents, and orchids. Then follows brief but
comprehensive essays on bulbs and tubers, bonsai,
greenhouses, window plants, planters, and the
physiology of plants with particular attention to
the necessities of light, soil, temperature, dormancy
periods, diseases, and other essentials.
Then follows the heart of the book; a compendium of
over 1,000 varieties of houseplants, most illustrated
in color photos, and here's the genius of the work:
each listing gives the necessary care in detail, with
propagation details, light requirements, optimum
temperature, water needs, humidity, and preferred
soil. Try finding all that in one other book!
The last section groups plants in tables such as
"plants that need half shade", "plants that require
a dormant period", "plants for an office", etc.,
for very handy reference. A good index is provided
wherein plants can be found by the folk names not
otherwise used in the book. (The reasons are carefully
explained by the author, but they would be fun to
have anyway).
This work, originally published in the Netherlands,
has sold over 200,000 copies in Europe, and it is
easy to see why: if you follow the recommendations,
you can hardly fail, even if you have had a "brown
thumb" in the past.
