Easy to read and lots of practical information based on author's vast experiences. As a beginner, I truly found it resourceful and useful. If you love to read a how-to book, it is the one you're looking for. But if you love fancy photos, 4-color pictures for reference purpose, etc. it's not what you need. Liz, it'd be very much better and will be perfect if you could possibly include more 4-color pictures of famous tortoises and turtles.

Exhaustive review of the once blooming roses.......1999-10-22
Brent Dickerson's announcement of this book preceded its release by far too long. This is an essential rose book for the serious heirloom rosarian. Like its illustrious predecessor the book is divided by class. Roses are recorded with a separate section of illustrations, not all roses are illustrated. Rose rustlers will find this useful in trying to identify once blooming found roses. With so many roses extinct, this tome gives the reader a sense if what has been lost. Hving covered the once and repeat bloomers, what is left for Brent to cover but hybrid teas from La France to Peace??

David Austin is the foremost authority on English Roses........2001-07-06
This is a good introduction to old roses and their development, but a better one about "English Roses". "English Roses" are a relatively new type of roses, pioneered by David Austin, starting about 1970, with his first popular variety, "Constance Spry". "English Roses" are shrub roses that have the look of old roses. They are very carefree roses and bloom profusely and often, most with a nice fragrance. No one is more qualified to talk about "English Roses" than David Austin since he "invented" them. He tells how to use them to the best advantage and also tells strong points and weaknesses of the numerous varieties. This is the man to listen to about growing English roses. The book also has a good introduction to the correct methods of rose cultivation. There are a lot of very nice pictures.

This lovely little book is an indispensible addition to any rose lover's library. Small enough to take with you to your local nursery and yet has enough detail to be very informative. Some newer English Roses not covered.
The Bible of Old Roses from a man making rose history!.......1998-07-28
Exquisite book, an absolute orgy for anyone who loves roses but especially for those of us who love the old roses. David Austin is making an indelible mark on the rose world. People will be writing about him a hundred years from now. This book is a lovely representation of his knowledge and thoughts on the roses he knows like few others. The book is small with a beautiful cover of an English rose, Sharifa Asma. He covers all the wonderful varieties of old or old looking roses, for example, rugosas, English roses, Gallicas, Moss Roses, China, Portlands, Bourbons, Damasks, and Teas. The information is succinct but not at all superficial. As he writes, he is clearly speaking of roses he knows like a friend. The book is packed with wonderful photographs in all types circumstances. He discusses cultivation. Particularly interesting is his chapter on English roses of today and the future. His bibliography is extensive and could be helpful in building one's own lib! rary. This is a MUST have book!

Perhaps the BEST book for Houston and Gulf Coast Gardeners.......2003-03-10
You will enjoy the many discoveries this book has to offer and it is beautifully illustrated with a color photograph and planting recommendations for every plant. I cannot recommend a better book for a Houston or Gulf Coast gardener, either expert or new comer, and I have read them all! It focuses on plants that truly do well HERE. It skips azaleas, hybrid roses, tulips and all the other fussy plants pushed by the local nurseries do great anywhere but here. Instead it offers beautiful and underused (and for the most part - EASY) alternatives.

California: Land of Immigrants who Quickly Become Incumbents
Testimonios is an interpreted collection of interviews with thirteen women, primarily Spaniards, who spoke with researchers employed by Hubert Howe Bancroft as he prepared to write his seven-volume History of California. These women were most often second-generation Californios - the daughters of families who came with the expeditions lead by Portola or Anza. Several of the women are from the greater Salinas Valley area and one, Maria Antonia Rodriguez Soberanes, is an ancestor in what my family calls "the Soledad Soberaneses." Maria is great-great-great grandmother to Paul Binsacca, Craig Bianchi, Dana Bianchi, Nicola Bianchi, Kathryn Bianchi, Mary Tadman, Sarah Sarmento, Steven Terry, Jana Martinez, Kerry King, and me. I am sure there are many other Salinas Valley residents who can trace their lineage to her as well.
And so what might we learn from my 3-great grandmother? One of twelve children, she bore fourteen children. Born in 1795, she married Feliciano Soberanes in 1810 and she died in 1883. In 1818, while living in Monterey, Maria remembers the appearance of a pirate ship. Women and children were dispatched to ranchos away from Monterey and the pirate Bouchard burned and sacked the city. By order of the Spanish governor of Alta California, munitions at Monterey's Presidio were destroyed rather than given over to Bouchard. At least for one cold, long night, Maria slept beneath a wagon with very little to keep her warm.
Maria's recollection of the early economy of the Salinas Valley is fascinating. Tidelands with lagoons of salt water were claimed by the Spanish crown and soldiers protected the salt when it dehydrated and began to set. This salt was taken in sacks to the royal treasury in Monterey and then sold to Spaniards for use on their ranchos. These cattle ranches needed salt licks for the animals and salt to cure the meat. Thus, the Spanish government was able to tax the cattle industry, with salt being the currency of the day. The city of Salinas and the Salinas Valley take their name from the Spanish term for salt.
Perhaps the most thought-provoking information shared by Maria, which is amplified by other women's testimonios, is a unique perspective on what I will call immigrants and incumbents. Feliciano and Maria are first-generation Californios and their parents arrived in our Salinas Valley in 1769 when the incumbents were Native American peoples. Within two generations, the Spaniards displaced the incumbents, cast off their status as immigrants, and populated large tracts of the valley. When Mexico pushed Spain out of its country, a Mexican army marched through Alta California to take the reins. No sooner than that political transition ended, Col. Fremont and the Americans arrived to drive Mexican rule south to our current border. Maria saw all four of these phases. She saw the Mexicans begin to secularize the California Missions to reduce the authority of the Catholic Church, and she watched the large ranchos held by the Spaniards given over to American settlers. King City and Soledad were once part of a Soberanes family land grant, for example.
About the American phase Maria said, stoically, "It is a law of nature that the poor shall steal from the rich. We Californians in 1846 owned every inch of soil in this country and our conquerors took away from us the greater part. The same thing has happened, I suppose, over and over again in any conquered nation..." These are certainly the words of an incumbent, not an immigrant.
California does seem to have a propensity to create incumbents just in time for the next wave of immigrants. And it's not always about ethnicity. John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath captures the collision of American immigrants from the Dust Bowl with California incumbents. Maria may well be on the right track - migration trends are about the redistribution of wealth and the motives and actions that are driven by poverty.
I commend the editors Beebe and Senkewicz for providing enough context for readers who are not California historians. And, the editors include material about the interviewers and the information-gathering process, which makes the book interesting at another level. The 470 page book is a treasure chest for anyone interested in California history in general and activities in the Salinas Valley in particular.

Balance and mobility disorders resulting in falls among the elderly population pose a serious public health problem in the United States. Costs associated with falls among the elderly are estimated to range from $75 billion to $100 billion. Coupling this statistic with the fact that adults over the age of 65 represent the fastest-growing population in the United States suggests an immediate need for activity programs specifically designed to reduce physical frailty and the rising incidence of falls among the older adult population. FallProof! is the first comprehensive and structured balance and mobility training program to address these needs.
Traditionally, exercise programs designed to address physical frailty and falls have adopted one-dimensional approaches of aerobic exercise, resistance training, or flexibility training. However, research has shown that falls occur as a result of multiple risk factors, both internal and external, and the interplay of multiple body systems. This book is terrific for physical therapists and others looking for new ideas in how to remediate balance issues in their patients. The organization, by system, is terrific, and the progression of activities and exercises brillant. Dr. Rose has included the strongest balance measures and even provided a "cheat-sheet" to help make the transition from functional problem to specific exercise. This is a must read for anyone treating balance problems.
