4 out of 5 stars A Cat Primer-Plus.......2000-02-28

A gold mine of practical information--and a lot of fun stuff that I didn't know about cats. that makes good small-talk fodder when the issue of cats comes up--and knowing all this makes me evenmore glad that there's a fine cat in my life.

3 out of 5 stars Nice but not complete.......2000-02-08

Although this book does contain some useful tips on cat care, I found that at least a third of the book was devoted to cat trivia and cute cat facts, including an entire chapter on famous cats through history. While these chapters are entertaining, I was looking for more basic information. The practical "how to" type information that I expected from a "complete guide" was far too brief and general.

Here is a fascinating study of commercial glass production along the Ohio River Valley in the 1950s and 1960s. Companies such as Blenko, Pilgrim, Rainbow, Viking, Kanawaha, Bischiff, Morgantown, and others made free- and mold-blown production glass in modern, sometimes bizarre shapes and wildly vibrant colors. Over 100 new images have been added to this revised and expanded second edition, for a total of over 530 color photographs of the beautiful glass, its labels, catalog pages, company histories. An updated price guide provides valuable insight into today's marketplace.

4 out of 5 stars Useful resource for Fifties Glass.......2002-12-21

Subtitled "Color Along the River," this book features handcrafted glassware produced in the 1950's and 1960's along the Ohio River Valley, an area in West Virginia famed for its glassmaking. The book contains over 400 color photos of glassware, plus labels, catalog page reprints, company histories, and a price guide. Featured companies include Blenko, Pilgrim, Kanawha, Rainbow, A.F. Bischoff, Fostoria, Viking, and Morgantown. There is also a chapter on cased and satin glass from international sources, such as Italy and Scandinavia.

This book is a wonderful source of information on glassware that was poorly documented elsewhere in 1995: crackle glass, all those colorful decanters with pointy teardrop stoppers, cased glass, pinched vases, and oversized bud vases. (Many of these items were not marked, but carried paper labels which quickly wore off.) There is also a chapter on figural glass, featuring the fish, birds, and elephants that were so popular during these decades.

Much of this type of glass is definitely an aquired taste. People seem to love it or hate it: currently it doesn't seem to have the mass following of, say, Depression glass or Fenton. Colors range from the garish (orange) to the gloomy (brown, gray), and items range from the delicate to the downright clunky. Some of the styles are just too recent for people to get too excited about. Having said that, Blenko in particular is seeing quite an upswing in popularity: some of its large decanters--especially amberina--are currently selling for well over $100. And crackle glass has a lot of afficionados. There is no doubt that glass of the 1950's and 1960's will be highly collectible in the near future. This is a unique book, which highlights "a pronounced awareness of color, form, and texture" which took place during these decades.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't live up to my expectations.......2000-12-14

I collect Blenko glass, and I got this book with the expectation that it would help me distinguish Blenko from the other WV glassmakers. The book is full of wonderful photographs, but there is only so much to be learned from a two dimensional object. There is a brief history of each glassmaker, and therein lies the problem. The history is much too brief, and there is very little if any discussion of what distinguishes each glassmaker from its competitors. The pictures are great, but the book left me wanting more information, and I came away from it unsatisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent referrence for collectors of viking glassware.......1999-03-10

I am a collector of viking glassware. This book is the single most helpful book I have found. It has great color photos and, what I find most interesting, actual pages from original viking glassware catalogues. It also has a great section reviewing the different labels from different series. Additionally, it contains a rather descriptive and detailed table of estimated values of the different pieces today. The book does a good job of giving histories of the companies inside as well. There are other types of glassware from the same geographical area (New Martinsville, WV) covered in the book as well. I, however, can not list them for you as my original copy of the book was recently destroyed in a fire so I am online today to order my new copy of the book!

                          Product Description

An Introduction to Aramaic is a straightforward introduction to biblical Aramaic for beginning students who are already familiar with Hebrew. All Aramaic passages in the Old Testament are included, along with an introduction to other Aramaic texts, such as ancient inscriptions, Dead Sea Scrolls, rabbinic literature, and quotations in the New Testament. There are also paradigms, a complete glossary, and a list of resources for further study as well as practice exercises for each chapter. The second edition clarifies certain points in the first edition, updates the contents, and provides an answer key.

                          4 out of 5 stars Handy for a beginner.......2007-03-01

Aramaic is not as well-served by modern grammar books as Hebrew. Other than Alger John's Grammar of Biblical Aramaic(which I don't have yet), this is the only beginner's grammar of note that I could find.
It is easy to read, but knowledge of Biblical Hebrew is a prerequisite because almost every chapter takes off from comparisons with the morphology of Hebrew words and inflections. The closing chapters are devoted to Aramaic beyond its biblical incarnation and are very interesting. The print is easy on the eyes and the key to the exercises is included. All in all, this is a good introduction.
I only wish it had more
                          1. explanatory content which would be useful to a self-learner - every chapter leaves you wanting for more (I had to refer to Franz Rosenthal's reference grammar in several instances)
                          2. exercises to aid retention of what you've learned (I'm thinking of Nava Bergman's Cambridge Biblical Hebrew Workbook which is excellent in this regard)
The author acknowledges the work's limitations in his preface and has suggestions for further study at the end. I think he should take the opportunity and expand this work, including the latter extra-biblical portions. The Aramaic content of the Tanakh is slim and one objective of trying to learn Aramaic is presumably to gain facility to read other works, e.g. the targums. Though the audience for this work may be relatively small, it fills a gap for those wanting to take a further leap. I'm not aware of any other comparable beginner's grammar available with such a scope.

5 out of 5 stars finally, Aramaic is *taught*.......2006-12-12

The coterie of Northwest Semitic dialects that we abbreviate as 'Aramaic' are collectively a staple of biblical and other historical research. Yet even though Aramaic is the second language of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament and arguably the first language of Jesus, English-language teachers and learners have suffered from the absence of a pedagogically designed *teaching* grammar of Aramaic.

Until now. Fred Greenspahn has solved the problem. (Full disclosure: I am the translator of the Spanish edition of this work and have used it for several years to good effect at Seminario ESEPA, San José, Costa Rica).

In thirty-two chapters, the author introduces the student who already knows Biblical Hebrew to the biblical Aramaic texts in full, as well as selections from inscriptions, the Elephantine and Bar Kochba letters, Midrash, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Targum Pseudo-Jonathan.

The text is well formatted with lots of white space, a psychological help to the student of no small import. Though errors bedevil the Aramaic of even this second edition, they have been identified and will doubtless disappear in a third.

The exercises are derived from the texts under study, which in the biblical portions are mostly Daniel and Ezra-Nehemiah passages that have been scrubbed of their most troublesome features. A full answer key appears in the back of the book.

This work is a gift to teachers and students of Aramaic. The ever essential works of Alger Johns, Franz Rosenthal, and others are now liberated to play their proper role as brief but invaluable reference works.

It's enough to make you doubt the decline of Western civlization.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough bang for your Buck.......2002-09-28

First of all, this book is massively overpriced. Fifty dollars plus for a keep paperback. The number of errors is ridiculous so much so that a special errata section is contained in the back. Furthermore, the explanations of the grammer are weak at best. This book is more of a workbook that a text. This of course does you no good unless you have a teacher who knows the answers. Also don't even think about buying this book unless you already have an extremely solid basis in Biblical Hebrew as the author assumes that you do(In all fairness if you are considering buing this book you probably already know Hebrew).

                          3 out of 5 stars Greenspahn's Introduction to Aramaic.......2001-06-08

This Introduction is structured as a workbook with room left to fill in grammatical and translation exercises. The introductory material about the history of Aramaic is useful and succinct, and the book overall is very user-friendly. Students enjoyed using this workbook and seemed to have a good sense of the basics of biblical Aramaic when they were done. There are problems, however. There are many typos in the work, perhaps one for every 2-3 pages. Further, some of the exercises are unnecessary and annoying even, and should be skipped, such as the many places where the student is told to translate from English to Aramaic. Further, when Greenspahn presents the student Aramaic passages from the Bible, he does so in simplified form, and some times he really ruins the flow and distinctive quality of the biblical text. Also, it's a little pricey. Again, students enjoyed this work and profited from it.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful tool for students of the Bible.......2000-07-15

Greenspahn's new grammar is a welcome and long overdue addition to the field. Until now, the standard work for students trying to get a grasp on the Aramaic of the Bible has been Franz Rosenthal's grammar of Biblical Aramaic. In point of fact, to call Rosenthal's work a "grammar" is a bit generous. Neither a learning grammar, nor really a comprehensive technical grammar, it reads more like a string of notes taken by one of the 20th century's great semitists--which is what it is. A student trying to teach himself Aramaic without a teacher would be lost. That is the great strength of Greenspahn's work.

"An Introduction to Aramaic" is a wonderfully, refreshingly student-oriented approach to the language. It is a beginner's grammar--although it does make the explicit claim that one does need a knowledge of Biblical Hebrew before using this work to dive into the Bible's Aramaic (ironically enough, precisely the opposite claim is made in Rosenthal's grammar!). Not only are the Aramaic portions of Ezra and Daniel covered, but the transliterated Aramaic of the New Testament, and the other snippets of Aramaic from the Hebrew Bible are as well. In addition, the grammar introduces students to extra-biblical Aramaic, including that of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Targumim.

For most of the world, Aramaic classes are hard to come by. If you've had biblical Hebrew and want access to the rest of the Bible's text, this is the grammar for you. Students would most benefit from using a more technical grammar, such as Rosenthal's, in conjunction with Greenspahn's.

This work is fine, for what it is... What it is NOT (and I assume the entire series is not), is an Aramaic Bible.

Note the category "Religion and Spirituality": Unlike the misleading series _title_, the ... _category_ doesn't say anything about the Aramaic language. When I bought this book, I was looking for an actual Aramaic Targum of Isaiah. Not here, folks.

I may eventually find a use for this volume anyway -- Chilton is a first-rate scholar -- but I was VERY disappointed to find that there was NO ARAMAIC TEXT OF THE ISAIAH TARGUM in it; it is ONLY a translation and notes. If you're looking for the genuine article, you're going to pay hundreds of dollars for it (probably directly to the publisher).

                            Product Description

The bilingual (Aramaic-Hebrew) concordance to the Targum of the Prophets is the product of an international project based in the Theological University of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands, Kampen (ThUK) and supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). With this publication a major research tool becomes available to those engaged in Biblical and Jewish Studies. For the first time meaningful quotations from the Targum and the Masoretic Hebrew text of the Bible are set out in parallel so that the user of the concordance can study the translation technique of the Targum in much greater detail than was hitherto possible.

The concordance opens up Targum Jonathan to scholars in various fields. It is an indispensable tool not only for research in the fields of textual criticism and the history of interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, but also for the study of early Judaism, the New Testament and patristics.

To facilitate consultation on the basis of the Hebrew, every concordance per book contains a Hebrew-Aramaic index. This final volume contains additions and corrections, a cumulative Aramaic-Hebrew index, as well as an English-Aramaic index.

Bergstrasser provided introductions to and grammatical sketches of the major linguistic groups among the Semitic languages, including chapters on Proto-Semitic, Akkadian, Hebrew, Aramaic, Ethiopic, and Arabic, as well as sections on the various dialects within each." "To the translation, Daniels has added marginal notes commenting on and updating the original work. A bibliography provides information about the major contributions to each language area, organized by language. Bergstrasser's original text specimens, which were represented only in transliteration and translation, have been supplemented with the original orthography of the text wherever possible. And an appendix on the scripts provides a working introduction to the various scripts in which the languages were written."

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding series.......2002-06-05

"The Aramaic Bible" is an outstanding reference work which is indispensible for any serious student of the Hebrew Bible. The Targums were Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible interspersed with rabbinic commentary. The Targums, which date to the middle of the first millenium and earlier, provide insights as to how the Jews (and some early Christians) actually interpreted the texts. Until now, it was difficult for someone not versed in Aramaic to have access to these documents; thus the appearance of not just a translation, but a scholarly edition is most welcome.

I used several of these volumes (including this one) in seminary while doing exegetical papers and found them informative beyond belief.

                                    Book Description

Written in the eighth century C.E., Targum Canticles offers one of the classic interpretations of the Song of Songs. In the relationship between the bridegroom and the bride in the Song, with its rhythm of communion, estrangement and reconciliation, the Targumist discovers allegorical history of God's relationship to Israel from the first exodus from Egypt, to the final exodus from exile when the Messiah comes.

The Targum of Canticles was one of the most popular religious texts within Judaism, and it may have promoted the use of the Song of Songs as the special reading for Passover. It was adapted in the medieval and early modern periods by Christian scholars who saw in the Song a cryptic history of Christ's relationship to the Church. Targum Canticles has played a central role in the interpretation of one of the most puzzling yet influential books of the Bible.

                                      Book Description

The centrepiece of this book is a critical edition of the Targum of Job which notes all variants from a total of 14 manuscripts and 2 printed editions. In the introductory section the first two chapters give a description of the principal printed editions and the manuscripts. A chapter on "The Stemma" considers how the various strands of textual tradition relate to each other. There is also a chapter on "Multiple Translation", a phenomenon particularly associated with the Targum of Job whereby more than one translation is often given to whole verses or to individual words and phrases. A final chapter describes in detail the methods underlying the critical edition. This book will provide a useful tool for those working on the textual criticism of the Old Testament and for those interested in the history of Jewish biblical exegesis.
