"The wretched Door, the horrid Fence.".......2003-12-29
Other sections list "The 100 Best Cat Books," cat films, cat societies, and cat welfare organizations. One of my favorite entries is a list of authors and their cats, and their quotations about cats. For instance, Brian Aldiss and his cats, Macramé, Yum-Yum, Foxie, Jackson, and Nickie list the two things cats cannot stand: "The wretched Door, the horrid Fence."
The one deliberate omission in this encyclopedia is the subject of feline veterinary care. A good reference for this sort of information is "The Cornell Book of Cats," edited by Mordecai Siegal.
Morris, a trained zoologist, was the curator of mammals at the London Zoo from 1959 to 1971, where he was responsible for the largest collection of wild felines in the world. He has also authored other popular works on zoology, including "The Naked Ape" and "Catwatching."
As might be expected from his background, the author's entries on feline behavior are some of the most interesting in the encyclopedia. Morris states that cats have a much greater acoustic range than dogs or humans, especially in their ability to hear high-pitched sounds. Cats prefer to hunt by stealth and need to be able to detect the ultrasonic squeaking of their prey.
I'll never forget the time I accidentally shut one of my cats in the room with me when I was practicing my violin. I happened to turn around and there was Calvin, pressing his enormous, furry body against the door, a piteous look in his eye. After reading this encyclopedia, I prefer to blame his behavior on his enhanced acoustic range rather than taking it as a commentary on my musical ability. After all, Calvin probably knew that violin strings used to be made of sheepgut, not catgut as is popularly supposed. Morris believes the term 'catgut' replaced 'sheepgut' because of the noises some people made while scraping on the strings.
As to why I turned around and saw him there, read Morris's entry on feline ESP.
'Cat World' is filled with feline anecdotes, both repeatable and some that are almost too bizarre to believe. Be sure to check out the entry on P.T. Barnum's 'cherry-colored cat,' and the story of what happened to the great English novelist Thomas Hardy's heart--coupled with the mysterious disappearance of his beloved cat, Cobby.
IF YOU ARE A CAT LOVER, YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2001-04-23
I have two Persians, and "Catworld" is a book I definitely would not want to be without. No matter how broad your knowledge is on cats, novice or expert, you are bound to find some new and interesting facts and amusing trivia contained among the pages. There are some recently published books on the market that do not contain nearly as much information as this one. "Catworld" is an excellent resource book for your library and you are bound to enjoy the stunning photography. I highly recommend this top-notch book...and your cat will love you for it!
Fascinating book!.......1999-04-21

Canadian Coins, 61st Edition - A Charlton Standard Catalogue
Manufacturer: Charlton Pr ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound Similar Items:
ASIN: 0889683158 |
Book Description
On Pricing: On-line auctions, land based auctions and dealer internet sites contribute over 95% of the pricing data used in this catalogue. We have another year of experience behind us in our database operation. Each yearly base holds 20,000,000 bits of information on prices and scarcity by grades. We will continue to refine the data gathering process in subsequent editions. On Grading: We have started on the revision of the grading section removed from "The Standard" in the last edition. This revision, even with just the vague outline, is more extensive than the old version. With subsequent editions this section will be expanded and improved to cover all grades, finishes and denominations.
On the 61st Edition: The "Standard" has been completely redesigned. The format increased in size (7" x 9", spiral bound); the page count has decreased. This saving will allow us to keep the "Standard" in one volume for the foreseeable future. The tables now carry up to twelve pricing columns. Through not all series demand this much attention, the ones that do receive it.
Modern coinage, 1968-2006, now has incorporated into the pricing tables the many finishes provided by the Royal Canadian Mint. Some of the tables are not fully completed for the simple reason that grading and pricing reported data has not caught up with the evolution of modern collecting.
On Modern Issues: The Royal Canadian Mint continues the headlong rush to issue new coins, new denominations and new packaging. It is hard to budget the thousands of dollars a collector would have to set aside to acquire one sample of each new issue for 2006. The question still to be answered is whether or not this is for the "good" of the hobby.
On Varieties: The Variety Section contained in the 61st edition comprises over 90 pages, and is devoted to the fifty cent series with special emphasis on George VI varieties. This series is one of the most extensive and complex in Canadian coin collecting and consequently the most challenging to collect.
Again, the "Standard" listings are just a start, while 94 different dies are catalogued there are many more to find. Over the next year hopefully the date spacing varieties are flushed out so a numbering system can be devised.
Our next variety section, in the 62nd edition, will cover the twenty-five cent coinage. Any information on this series you wish to send would be greatly appreciated.

Canadian Colonial Tokens (5th Edition): A Charlton Standard Catalogue
W. K. Cross Manufacturer: Charlton Pr ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound Similar Items:
ASIN: 0889682771 |
Book Description
The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Colonial Tokens, fifth edition, is now available. Now with a spiral binding the Colonial Tokens guide is "user friendly" and easy to work with, making it a must have for the token enthusiast.New interest is moving into the colonial token field, with dealer and collector demand falling on shrinking inventories. This is not a new situation for high grade tokens, but it certainly is for the middle range, which is now experiencing the pressure. Even the low grades are being sought after to fill the needs of telemarketers. Canadian Colonial Tokens have not enjoyed so much popularity in over a hundred years.
A shortage of circulating legal tender in Canada from 1800 to 1860 forced local governments and merchants to devise their own coinage for commerce. Tokens used in Newfoundland, Nove Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Upper (East) and Lower (West) Canada are described in detail, including composition, weight, diametre, die axis, edge, and date of issue. All tokens are cross-referenced with other established numbering systems such as Breton, Courteau, Lees, Wood and Willey. A legend index allows collectors to easily identify even the most obscure token.
All prices have been reviewed and updated allowing readers to accurately value their collections. With over two hundred pages filled with information and illustrations of this unique Canadian collectable, The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Colonial Tokens is a publication no numismatic enthusiast should be without.

Canadian Coins, 58th Edition (A Charlton Standard Catalogue) (Charlton's Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins)
W.K. Cross Manufacturer: Charlton Pr ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 088968278X |
Book Description
The 58th edition is only available spiral bound! For the 57th edition, the first year for spiral binding, we made available to collectors both perfect bound, the classic binding used for the last 50 years, and spiral bound catalogues. Although all perfect bound copies were sold, this did not happen until all spiral bound books were sold out. Clearly, collector's prefer spiral binding. The 58th edition (2004) has three major additions:
First: We have added a 40-page section on varieties, a category which has been promised for many years. The Charlton-Zoell section is the first step in the concept of adding 40 new pages on varieties to each of the next five succeeding editions, until we have built up 200 or more pages on Canadian coin varieties. In this manner a new Charlton-Zoell Variety Catalogue will emerge.
There are over 400 variety classifications that will be dealt with over this five year period. A great deal of research must be done on coin varieties in Canada to clarify and to educate the dealers and collectors on the many different categories. Equally important is the value of each category. It would be ideal to avoid a repeat of the 1960s variety bubble.
Second: The portrait varieties of Victorian Newfoundland are now illustrated for all denominations. With this edition we have now completed the Victorian portrait varieties for Canada and Newfoundland allowing the collector the opportunity to identify and catalogue this historical period.
Third: We have priced the Victorian portraits. This is a first for Canadian cataloguing. Using the Population Report produced by I.C.C.S. (International Coin Certification Service) as a base to determine the rarity, values have been assigned to each date/portrait in the Victoria series. This is an on-going project and each successive edition will fine tune the pricing process.
As for the standard fair, all prices have been reviewed and revised, all mintage numbers added or adjusted where needed, and new issues from the Royal Canadian Mint have been added bringing the 58th edition current to 2003. The "Standard Coin" all 440 pages, is truly the `bible' of Canadian Coins.

Foremost Authority on Canadian Bank Notes.......2000-06-03
Newcomers to the hobby often confuse Canadian Bank Notes with currency issued by the Government of Canada. This guide will keep you straight as it lists all the issues from the private banks that no longer exist but once competed with the government in the printing of money. It contains a description of the banks, images of all the notes, as well as book values at various grades from G to UNC.
Even if you are just a casual collector of Bank of Canada issues, this catalogue may peak your interest. I find that the bank notes tend to be more artistic, and they all have historical, cultural and regional significance which makes for an interesting endeavour.

Canadian Coins (56th Edition) : The Charlton Standard Catalogue (Charlton's Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins, 56th ed)
W.K. Cross Manufacturer: Charlton Pr ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0889682666 |
Book Description
Charlton Standard Catalogue Canadian Coins, long considered the undisputed authority on numismatics in Canada, is celebrating 50 years of continuous publication. The 56th edition, to be released in July, will mark the golden anniversary (1952-2002) of Canada's most popular coin catalogue. First published in 1952, the 34-page booklet has grown to a new height of 368 pages with this edition, filled with information on Canadian coins. The early issues of Victoria and Edward VII have continued their upward price climb, setting new highs for coins in the VG (very good) to EF (extremely fine) grades. Now some of the scarce George VI items are starting to experience that same upward price pressure.
Tracking price movements, as well as keeping abreast of new issues by the Royal Canadian Mint, makes the Standard a must to own. Three new double date varieties, along with the newly discovered variety, the 1996 Near and Far Six Nickels are included in the 56th edition.
Starting in 1999, the Royal Canadian Mint began issuing our subsidiary coinage 1¢ up to the 50¢ in a new composition made from a patent process invented at the Mint. The new coins carry a P mint mark (multi-ply plated steel) to differentiate them from older issues. All this and more is covered in the new and completely revised 56th edition.
This is a publication that no person interested in numismatics can afford to be without!
