Mouths and bits.......2000-08-07
I found this book, by way of a quick perusal, to be easy to understand about the use of teeth in telling a horses age. The written contents were easy to comprehend, as opposed to vet books and others that I read through, the depictions clear and concise.
EXACTLY what the average horseperson wants in this type of book. We have an agistment property and are in the business of re-educating horses and selling horses, so this book is a must for us.
We have always used veterinary text, which is rather hard to follow for the layman.

New Horse Owner Must Have.......2007-04-08
I love this book because it tells you exactly why you shouldn't run out and buy a "Tom Thumb" or "Hackamore"; two of the favorite bits that new horse owners tend to try/buy first. This book will save you $100's of dollars because it explains, in detail, why a bit works the way it does. It will change the way you think.
Outstanding.......2000-05-27
Gives exercises that you can do with a horse to soften them up if the horse is just being trained or if they are experience and need to work on the not laying on the bit! Worth the money!
Book Description
There has never been a truly authoritative, practical and comprehensive guide to bits and bit combinations available to the rider and horse-owner, a vacancy which has been highlighted by the recent renewed interest in a more thoughtful approach to bitting and its effect on the horse. With regular reports in the equestrian media of horses transformed by the change of a bit, and how a particular top name in the sport has successfully converted a horse to a new type, the equestrian world will welcome this thorough work by respected expert Elwyn Hartley Edwards.
The author give details of every known bit in the world, with photographs and working diagrams to show how each group works. Covering everything from the simple snaffle to the Western bosal, it is totally international in content and approach. Elwyn provides a fascinating insight into the history of the bit and explores the latest developments in design and manufacture, with details of subsidiary tackle and bitting for different sports and activities.

Excellent reference material!.......2007-07-31
FINALLY a complete look at horse bits and practices from the beginning of horsemanship through today. A necessary book for every serious horse person's library - this is one we will come back to again and again I'm sure. Includes excellent photos and diagrams of the different bits and hackamores et al with explanations of how and WHY each piece works. While the author does have some disapproving tones at times, so what? It's his book and thus his voice after all. As long as the information is accurate and clearly given that is all the matters.
great book.......2007-05-08
This is an awesome book for anyone who wants to learn more about bits. The pictures are great, and the book includes some history as well. It's also very easy to read, especially for the type of book it is.
"For the Novice and the Experienced Rider".......2006-09-03
....since getting back into riding the English discipline after a break that lasted quite a few years, I was surprised when I discovered just how much technical information had slipped my mind. Since the art of bitting was at the top of my list for my about-to-be new horse, I eagerly awaited its arrival and was not disappointed. The book opens with a chapter about the evolution of the bit, then concisely describes the many bits, the variations thereof, how they feel to the horse and how to determine the best choice for your equine companion. This information far exceeded the expectations I had when I first submitted my order. Bits & Bitting helped to re-acquaint me with this very important piece of tack! The pages speak to the novice in laymans terms and also to the experienced rider that may be looking to change his or her horse's bit.
A must read for aspiring horse professionals........2006-07-24
I bought this book with the hopes in mind to learn about the different types of bits. I didn't just want to know what they were called, but also what purpose they served. I felt that this book was a good start to my understanding bitting. I found the author, Elwyn Hartley Edwards, to be absoutely entertaining with his side comments; he stated his opinions, but without taking away from the facts, which is something one must admire with his British humor.
Thorough Study of the Subject.......2006-03-15
This is a very thorough study of bits and their application. It covers the history of the bit and theory behind its use. Rein effects are clearly and concisely explained (easier to demonstrate than to write about) and the horse's anatomy regarding the cause and effect of bit/bridle pressure is illustrated brilliantly to help the rider understand the effect of proper cues on the entire horse.
The book emphasizes proper application of all riding cues, specifically how the bit reinforces information already relayed to the horse through the seat and legs.
The illustrations are very well done and complement the book nicely.
This book could benefit the beginner, but it is so thorough that it really fits into the intermediate skill level. The depth of information could easily overwhelm a beginning rider who is still struggling with basic skills.
My assessment of the author's writing is that it is witty and at points humorous, in the dry manner of which the British are famous. I never felt the author was pompous or "angry sounding." It seemed to me the author is a true expert in this field and was laying out the information including his "expert opinion." I appreciated his opinions and felt the book would not have been nearly as informative without them.
I almost did not buy this book based on the previous reviewer's comments. I'm glad that I bought it and once I started reading it, I found it flowed smoothly from cover to cover. My knowledge and skills are the better for it.

Alright but not great.......2007-08-05
A good and informative book, but mostly it just talks about classical dressage/schooling training in relation to the bit and reins/contact with not a lot of detail about different bits and their effects. It is a good book if that is what you are looking for but it is nothing new and the subject is covered well in many other books that are more expansive.
Check it out of the library.......2007-03-02
This is a really great book in some ways--it discusses all kinds of bits, bridles, and reins, and it has top notch pictures of not only the tack, but drawings of how they affect the horse's tounge and mouth. I learned a tremendous amount from this book. But the book proceeds from discussing training with a snaffle to riding with a pelham for dressage. The chapter on reins near the end applies only to pelhams and dressage. I didn't catch on until nearly then that this is really a book about riding dressage. If you trail ride for pleasure as I do, you can learn from this book, but it offered me nothing about the reins and using my hands as a pleasure rider.
Check this book out of the library and read it--I can't praise it enough for what it taught me about bits. But I'm sorry that I spent money on it because I can't imagine that it's a book that I'll want to visit again and again as the years go by and I encounter other horses in my life.
The Bit and the Reins.......2006-03-15
Should be a must for every rider that ever uses a bit. Much more comprehensive understanding of how it effects the horse. The diffrent types and what they are trying to achieve. But it's all in the riders' hands. It's made me come to the conclusion of what NOT to use. Great book!!!
Book Description
A good bit fits your horse's mouth and facititates a productive "riding dialogue" between you and your horse. But there are so many types and styles of bits available that making a selection can be a daunting task, particularly if you don't know what to look for. Jessica Jahiel demystifies the bit-selection process by emphasizing that the best bit is the mildest one suitable for the horse and the job. She then discusses conformation of the horse's head and mouth, how a bit works, bit types and materials, quality, price, and accessories. She explains how to position a bit in a horse's mouth and the best way to handle the bit when riding. With proper bit selection and the "good hands" that come with experience, you will soon find that communication with your horse-and, thus your ride-is vastly improved.
Customer Reviews:
Perhaps appropriate for beginning riders.......2006-03-28
This is a very basic introduction to bits and their function. The book never adequately addresses the subject and comes far short of the title. I believe that all except the most novice of horse enthusiasts will already be familiar with the vast majority of the material presented.
If you have absolutely no knowledge of the subject and you're looking for a very brief overview, this is the book for you.
"The Complete Book of Bits and Bitting" provides a much more thorough coverage of the subject although it is perhaps a bit too thorough for the novice rider.
a little bit about bits.......2006-02-27
general info. is good, but being ignorant about bits i was hoping for more in depth information.
Book Description.......2003-06-03
A good bit fits your horse's mouth and facilitates a productive "riding dialogue" between you and your horse. But there are so many types and styles of bits available that making a selection can be a daunting task, particularly if you don't know what to look for. This book will help ease the task.

Start With Hackamore Reinsman .......2004-12-01
This is the second of Ed's two books.
You need to start with Hackamore Reinsman to understand the principles outlined in Reinsman of the West. This book assumes you have already worked your horse up to most of the basic skills of a good cow horse, that you have trained your horse on the traditional hackamore (bosal & mecate) and that your horse is ready for double reigning in preparation for the full bridle and traditional Spanish/California bits. If you want to know how bridling was done, then by all means buy and read this book.
The only master Vaquero I've ever met told me that this material is best viewed as entertainment because nobody will ever have the time to make horses like they did in the old days. Probably so.
Today, Vaquero is a term being used casually by some folks who don't really know as much about it as they should. Ed's two books will help you identify the right clinicians and trainers to help you along. I have found this book useful and inspiring but I have to tell you that my horse and I won't be ready for the bridle for a long while. Patience is the key to reaching each goal and Ed sets them out in order.
In Ed's Connell's time, the tradition of raising and training fine horses and master horsemen in the rough, semi arid cattle country of the west coast was almost gone. These books were his way of collecting and passing on knowledge and ancient traditions from the Spanish Ranchos that were about to be lost forever.
Because of his experience and the kind of people he knew, Ed took it for granted that the reader already had a basic knowledge of horses and riding. That makes this material especially challenging for a beginner. You should also be aware that this book is not a quick fix for quirky horse behaviour, it's a long term commitment to training yourself.
I gave this book a 4 star rating because it isn't for the kind of backyard horseowner that most working people are today. It's value is limited and may be difficult or impossible for people without plenty of time and patience to apply as a practical method. If you're not a rider or trainer the book is informative and will help you understand the horse culture and equestrian traditions of the Pacific Coast.
But if you're one of the lucky people who has the time and the energy to work with your horse on a large ranch with a few cows wandering around then Ed Connell is going to make you wish you got started yesterday.
Book Description
This is the definitive book on all the old bit and spur makers of the Texas region who were working between 1870 and 1970. There are 63 makers featured with stunning photographs of their work, their maker's mark and a biography of each maker. The origins of the Texas style are traced in the history of bits and spurs brought to the New World from England, France and Spain.

Good photos, but lacks variety.......2006-11-02
The photos are excellent, and the horses are lovely. But for a calendar which is supposedly devoted to showcasing draft breeds, this one is a bit lopsided. Four pages -- a third of the calendar -- are devoted to the Gypsy Vanner, hardly one of the standards of the heavy horse world. The rest of the calendar pages are broken down as follows:
Percheron: 2
Friesian: 2
Clydesdale: 2
Belgian: 1
Shire: 1
No Suffolks. No Brabants. None of the rare or "fringe" breeds (e.g. American Cream, Spotted Draft.) But four pages of Gypsy Vanners?! (The photographer has a separate calendar entirely devoted to Gypsy Vanners, I see, but evidently that didn't get them out of his system.)
So, I am giving this a rating of 3, because I would have preferred more variety. If you just want beautiful pictures of heavy horses, and aren't particular about which breeds they are, you might rate it more highly.

Nantucket from the Interior.......2003-01-25
The photography in this book is beautiful. However, if you are looking for pictures of outdoor Nantucket scenery, then you may want to choose another book. This book shows a lot of the inside of homes & their backyard gardens. It is a great background reference. It is clear the author did a lot of research of historical Nantucket when writing this book. Overall, there are a handful of really nice pictures of Nantucket, but mostly of the inside of older or newly renovated homes on the island. Great for decorating ideas!
Nantucket: Gardens and Houses.......2000-07-25
A beautiful collection of 300 full-color photographs of Nantucket's gardens and houses. The author and photography is able to capture the unique vegetation and landscape that adorns the historical houses. I was impressed with the photography of the interiors of some of the most famous homes on the island. A quality collection of homes, gardens, history and culture. I would recommend for anyone who enjoys traveling to Nantucket. A perfect gift to bring home for the cofee table.

Book Description
This is a book about the economic and social realities of a world that existed in the Middle East up to our days, seen through the Kaleidoscope of one important town - Jerusalem. The reconstruction of all the guilds that functioned during the Ottoman period draws on the untapped archives of the local court of Muslim Jerusalem (XVIth-XVIIIth centuries) - but it includes a plethora of information on the Christians and Jews of that town who actively participated in its economic life.
About 50 different guilds are described: Goldsmiths and blacksmiths, tourist guides and undertakers, tailors and carpenters, soap makers and cotton weavers, beauticians and bookbinders. The modus operandi of each guild, and of the system as a whole, are analysed and presented for the first time as precursers of civil society.
The book holds also 19 original documents - facsimiles plus translations - illustrating the activity of several central guilds.
