Book Description
One of Australia's best kept secrets, the Australian Terrier ranks among the world's most loyal working terrier breeds. The country boasts five indigenous pure-bred dogs, and its pride in the Australian Terrier dates back to the nineteenth centure. As both a game earthdog and a devoted family dog, the breed thrives, able to balance its friendly, happy nature with its hard-bitten and rugged appearance. Few breeds of dog can compete with the Australian Terrier's soundness, even disposition and extroveted character.
This book provides insightful chapters on the breed's history, characteristics and temperament, the breed standard as well as puppy selection, house-training, obedience and showing.
This new colorful volume promises to be a welcome addition to the home library and a resource that can be relied upon for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for the new Aussie Terrier owner!!!.......2007-03-09
This book has been extremely informative about Austrailian Terriers. A new breed for me, it gives information through each chapter of how to be, how to train and what these darling little dogs need and want from a new owner. From coming home the first day to vet trips, training tips, house breaking tips. Just an excellent source of information.
Another Satisfied Customer!.......2007-01-11
I am very pleased with the response time in which ordering, shipping, and receiving was handled. I received the books I ordered in less than a week w/o any problems. I will use this form or purchase again.
Muriel Lee's AUSTRALIAN TERRIER.......2005-08-22
The book is impressive and all Australian Terrier owners should have one. It covers most aspects of the Breed - puppy care, everyday care, health care, training, showing and History. It has lots of colour photos of Australian Terriers in most situations. It is well written, easy to read, and well set out. I especially liked the three consecutive pages which illustrated the Australian Terrier's physical structure, internal organs and skeletal structure, all illustrated on the same dog and very easy to understand.
Grooming is hard to explain in a book - the breeder should give a guidance when selling the puppy. If the dog has a harsh coat (as it should) any shampoo, other than a conditioning one, will do, as I have found with my terriers.
The book has an Index (many books don't!). It is a high quality book, I am really pleased to have a copy.

A Major Disappointment.......2005-04-04
This book has very little specific information about the Aussie and a lot of general dog information better presented in other books. For example, I was looking for grooming information on stripping and was told to ask a breeder. The issue of bathing a hard coated dog was given the answer, bathe the dog as you like.

What a way to garden!.......2000-01-19
This book is an excellent way to learn what to plant next to eachother or not in order to promote better growth, not to mention growing certain things to make your soil more viable and keeping away insects. I think this book is the best way to learn about organic gardening in an uncomplicated, interesting-to-read way. I have never been able to grow potatoes without somekind of rot or bug infesting and this whole time all I had to do was plant a pretty flowering tobacco next to it! Never again a problem.

When you look past the cover of Martha Stewart's latest effort, you find it's not all about framing your fern collection. (Whew!) It is, however, about defining your home's style using accessories that look expensive but (generally) aren't. There's some very practical and budget-conscious advice here in the chapters about pictures, tables and stools, lamps and shades, shelves, screens and mirrors, and pillows and throws. You can disguise the humble origins of inexpensive adjustable shelving by adding wood trim around the edges and painting everything, including the metal standards and braces, to match the wall color. You can break up or conceal space with screens you make yourself from plain wood panels or old windows. You can update small outdoor tables with do-it-yourself mosaic tile that goes on in one piece. You can, of course, make a large framed entryway mirror from an $800 slab of mirror glass, as Martha does-- but really, no one will check your bank statement to see how much you spent, and it will reflect just as clearly with inexpensive hardware-store mirror glass. Some of the best projects are for sofa pillows, bed and table linens, and lampshades. Though Martha's voice isn't much in evidence in the text, her concepts are definitely here: the instructions are simple and straightforward and the look clean, comfortable and unfussy. --Barrie Trinkle

Decorating Details Marth Stewart.......2006-08-16
Really nice book, to read and to have as a coffee table book
I had a bad experience.......2004-06-10
I spent a few weeks following her suggestions and thousands on the materials. We had a dinner party to show off the ideas I used and some people were polite with compliments. My husband found a few of our "friends" laughing at Martha's ideas.
A friend later confided that some of the people thought the Martha ideas I implemented were pathetic. I changed most of the things back and my husband was furious. I cried for a week. Maybe she deserves jail time after my experience.
Interesting, practical ideas.......2004-04-05
This book is the follow-on to "How to Decorate," Martha's first book. This book concentrates on the small details: how to display pictures, how to arrange your collections, and so on. The introductory chapter on how to display pictures and photographs is particularly good, giving ideas (complete with beautiful photographs) on how to display pictures and explaining principles such as where to place pictures, how to arrange them, and why certain arrangements of pictures work in certain places and not others.
The book emphasizes Martha's trademark, which is finding inexpensive but beautiful pieces at garage sales, refinishing them, and adapting them to new uses. Many of the ideas she presents, such as refinishing an old footstool and turning it into a stereo stand, are practical and attractive.
Another winner by Martha.......2004-01-16
In the long line of excellently crafted books, Decorating Details qualifies as very useful, quality speaks highly for Martha. Detailed photos on top quality paper, have become a mainstay with her books. The book covers pictures, tables & stools, lamps & shades, shelves, screens & mirrors, and pillows & throws. Each section has detailed instructions, for making in making lamp shades there are detailed photos, as well as, written instructions for drafting, decorating, and making a lamp shade. Decorating Details give simple and easy ideas for decorating any space.
simple, uncomplicated home living.......2000-08-24
I'm in the process of simplifying and optimizing my home's living quarters. I have to admit that I get depressed after looking at other decorating books - for instance, where rooms have dreamy coordinating wallpaper, border, paint & fabrics. This is a decorating book that doesn't stress me out wishing I had a particular piece of furniture or a million dollars. It's the projects themselves that remind you don't need to have to go and buy expensive things around the world. With a little creativity and some elbow grease, you can pick up items from the local home or fabric warehouse and keep it simple. I'd like to make the folding screen (p. 98) from lightweight boards, hinges and casters. I may cover them with fabric instead of paint. But I'll probably start with the linen pillowcases (p. 130) simply because I've got the materials for it. Notice that all the rooms are quite simple. The living room has a couch, a couple of chairs, some nesting tables. period. The projects are "light bulbs" that go on and make us remark: "why didn't I think of that?" OR: "that's what I am aiming for."

An excellent book for first time decorators........2000-04-21
House Comfortable is a very complete resource for creating a comfortable home. I recommend it for first time decorators and those who are designing a custom-built home. It covers a variety of topics including lighting, color, furniture placement, room measurements, etc. But, it goes beyond listing the design elements of a comfortable home and actually tells you how to achieve this goal. This book includes a resource section and loads of wonderful, practical advice; detail you would tend to omitin a do-it-yourself project. It reads like a stylish text book that you will want to take with you on shopping trips.

Lots of great ideas with beautiful photos!.......2003-08-25
This book is wonderful! I checked it out from the local library, but now I've got to own it!
Yes indeed, do look elsewhere...........2003-07-26
I assume that the reviewer who called this book "superb" is a friend of the authors or works for the publisher. Like so many interior design books on the market, this one has lots of gorgeous pictures of gorgeous rooms, but little that is practical in terms of execution or upkeep by real people (e.g., an entire porch done in acres and acres of draped and shirred high-end fabric). The text is mostly descriptive and doesn't say what I really want to know, like "how did they do that?" "how much did it cost?" and "who keeps it clean?" In fact, the charming cover picture notwithstanding, the rooms shown are far more often opulent than they are comfortable-looking. Do real people actually live in them or are they just designer showcase rooms? Perhaps more egregiously, this also seems to be a hastily produced book. For example, somehow the editors and authors all failed to notice a glaringly misplaced caption within the first few pages. There are lots of imprecisions in the text: commonplaces like pitched-roof spaces in attics and stained-glass family crests in Tudor-style leaded windows are described by the authors as "unusual" or "unique." Crocheted textiles are called "woven" and marble slabs are called "large bricks." I know this kind of verbal carelessness is frequently to be found in design magazines, but shouldn't the standards be higher for writing books? If, like me, you enjoy looking at pictures of creatively done rooms to steal a design idea here or there, then go to the bookstore, flip through this book, then put it back on the shelf. Anyone with the financial resources to actually recreate and maintain such rooms can presumably also afford (and will absolutely need) their own design team; they don't need this book.
Look elsewhere for style and comfort.......2002-12-16
I wonder if the other reviewer and I looked at the same book. I found the photos to be outdated. The style was a by way of the 80's and I'm not talking cool retro. So, I did not find the book to be very inspiring. I was hoping for it to have more of an Arts and Crafts feel, or be along the lines of the Not So Big House series, which I recommend instead of this book.
A superb addition to an interior design reference collection.......2000-05-04

Comfortable Living By Design.......2000-03-14
Enjoyed reading this book due to the fact that Deborah helps to explain the aspects of decorating and design in a way that I (the average person) can understand them. She opened my eyes to all sorts of things that I had never thought about before when trying to make my home feel like me and my family rather than trying to duplicate some photo in a magazine that I really liked , but when in fact it wasn't my style at all. I really recommend this book for anyone who was a frustrated as me when it came to decorating my home.
