5 out of 5 stars Amphibians: Their Care and Keeping.......2001-05-04

The word amphibian comes from the Greek words meaning two lives. Amphibians are animals that, with only a few exceptions, spend part of their life in water, and part on land. Scientists so far have identified more than 4,500 species of amphibians. Frogs are probably the best-known amphibians.

Steve Grenard's latest book, Amphibians: Their Care and Keeping, is an essential reference for anyone interested in these fascinating creatures. Grenard is a herpetologist with more than thirty years experience with amphibians.

He starts with the evolutionary history of amphibians, a story that "began some 350 million years ago during the Devonian period." Today, they're the "most numerous of all living vertebrates, [and] have adapted to virtually every climatic and geographic locale, save for full-strength sea-water."

Grenard then describes the biology of amphibians, explaining how they eat, sleep, and reproduce. He also explains how they defend themselves against predators. He devotes one chapter to taxonomy, listing the three orders of amphibians: limbless (cecillians); tailed (salamanders and newts); and tailless (frogs and toads).

The second section of the book describes how to care for captive amphibians. He starts with how to chose the best animal and where you can find healthy specimens. He then provides information on how to provide the best home for your pet. He says that "amphibians are primarily for display, study and exhibit purposes--they should not be handled any more than is absolutely necessary." He describes the procedures to follow when handling is required, such as when cleaning the cage.

Most amphibians eat live foods. Grenard explains food preferences and offers tips on obtaining the correct foods. He also describes good health care, both to prevent a diseased pet, and the transmission of disease from animal to human.

He finishes with a discussion of conservation and legal protection. Some amphibians are already extinct, and others are endangered. Grenard also incudes listings of resources in the appendices, including national and international societies, finding a knowledgeable veterinarian, and habitat and equipment suppliers.

Amphibians: Their Care and Keeping is a must-have book for anyone contemplating sharing their home with these creatures.

4 out of 5 stars one of the best I've seen, and I've seen a lot.......1999-05-17

amphibian-care books, especially newt and salamander books, tend to be vague and unhelpful, telling me little I didn't know. This book, however, is what I've been looking for, especially to recommend to new newt owners who complain that they haven't been able to find a helpful book in this admittedly sparse field. It's got a lot of information for beginners, and stuff that, though fascinating, is often left out of books about newts -- for example, a summary of the evolutionary history and fossil record of amphibians. The list of mail-order food supply houses is particularly helpful for those without easy access to waxworms and frozen pinkies.

5 out of 5 stars Snakes: Their Care and Keeping.......2004-06-12

This book has it all, from basic biology to handling, breeding, feeding and health care tips and much much more including several colour pictures of just about every snake imagionable. This book is very well written plus the author has a wonderful sense of humor. It is geared more toward the amateur herper although I an sure that all experienced herpers will enjoy reading this book. An absolute must for amateur herpers.

5 out of 5 stars Another note from the author.......1999-06-14

Regarding the reviewer below---I see one of my creationist "friends" has decided to pay a visit.

I didn't do any of the reviews here. I don't have to. I have my own author section right there at the bottom. Even lists my professional credentials.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of interesting information here..........1999-05-20

Lenny Flank writes great books on snakes and lizards. This one contains so much information it's almost like an encyclopodia--except that it's fun to read. A definite must for all devotees.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1999-04-10

The book is not a complete waste of time to read, *but* it is a complete waste of your money (perhaps check it out from your local library...).

The author is not a professional and doesn't possess any formal or academic background in the field; he is a hobbyist. This is all well and good, but if I want precise information on how to properly care for my snake, it certainly wouldn't be from another hobbyist.

Overall, the book does provide decent supplemental information from another hobbyist, but it is certainly not up to being one's primary or sole source of information to caring for your snake. In this respect, it is wholly lacking.

If the reader is seeking expert, *qualified* information (and if you genuinely care about your snake), he or she certainly will not find it in this book.

From a number of books I have been reading on passive energy topics, Mazria's small book is the most concrete, understandable and organized. I designed my home using the book and the forecasted energy compsumption matched the calculations!

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference!.......1998-12-04

When I designed our first house this book was invaluable. We are now designing our second home and looked to see if there is an update. Unfortunately it has not been revised but then little has changed with the sun and mass and the book will once again be a valued resource.

        5 out of 5 stars absolutely indispensable!.......1998-06-08

A seminal reference on the fundamentals of solar design. Easily used, yet thorough and quantitative. Should be required reading for everyone in the architecture & building design fields. Sunfall info given here is relevant to every structure ever designed -- and if you actually use it, the info *will* improve your design!!

This is a good refrence book with a few good points but the big directory is of all places in europe and the author speaks as he wrote it in england, which he probally did. If it was updated more, ( all old greenhouse pictures) and had new process it would get more stars.

According to the National Academy of Sciences, the Earth's surface temperature has risen by about 1 degree Fahrenheit in the past century, with accelerated warming during the past two decades. There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities. Human activities have altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases - primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. The heat-trapping property of these gases is undisputed although uncertainties exist about exactly how earth's climate responds to them. Energy from the sun drives the earth's weather and climate, and heats the earth's surface; in turn, the earth radiates energy back into space. Atmospheric greenhouse gases (water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases) trap some of the outgoing energy, retaining heat somewhat like the glass panels of a greenhouse. Without this natural "greenhouse effect," temperatures would be much lower than they are now, and life as known today would not be possible. Instead, thanks to greenhouse gases, the earth's average temperature is a more hospitable 60°F. However, problems may arise when the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases increases. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide have increased nearly 30%, methane concentrations have more than doubled, and nitrous oxide concentrations have risen by about 15%. These increases have enhanced the heat-trapping capability of the earth's atmosphere. Sulfate aerosols, a common air po
