Not as good as it could have been.......2002-12-23

While this book has a lot of information for people who have a puppy, it offers minimal information for someone like me who has just brought home an adult Staffy. The book has a lot of info on how to crate train a puppy, the importance of socialization and other topics that can pertain to adult dogs, but if there was just one paragraph on how to make an adult dog feel comfortable in it's new home, or what I should expect during the first week, I would have given this book 4 stars!

I was also looking for a book that would give me the basics on what type of collar/brush/leash to buy, but when I got to that section, the authors advice was to ask your vet.

While the pictures were great, I would quickly trade them for more information!

great beginning book for great dogs.......2002-12-14

as a serious protection dog lover, i bought this book to buffer my growing library of "doggy trivia", and i refer to it every time someone in my neighborhood brings one home. it has been loaned out and returned a few times, and it seems to help those who take the time to read it.
it is light on the eyes (love the pictures, and my dog looks like the white dog on page 16-american bully), and light on the mind, very easy to read! i will credit this book for one very special reason, and that is that it lists legal problems one can expect when having a pit lookalike or the real thing. this book actually lead me to research further into what laws pertain in my area of the world, and it made me realize the benefit of preparing for our move next year. this aspect alone is important for any pit owner. because most insurance companies will not allow groomer or vet stats into their computers (the results would kill their ability to dole out insurance because the pomeranian, chow chow, cocker spaniel, and scottie owners would be ahead of pits for bites), this book is important. it shows that these dogs are sited for media and statistical exploitation.
i recommend it for the beginning pit lover. it shows the dogs i see in my friend's homes, the ones that love the kids and are not allowed to be a problem. please buy it if you have a pit, and if you don't buy it anyway. you may learn to discern where the propaganda came from.
as the owner of an american bully who resembles a pit, i can attest to the problems we, the good dog owners, face because of owners of dogs who will never own books!
i also recommend this book for any boston terrier owner. i have found that these dogs came from the truncated nosed pits of the 1800's. it is a great history of where your companion animal came from. see carl semencic books. go pits!

Very Handy To Have..........2002-11-11

If your thinking about getting a American Pit Bull Terrier, this book is perfect to have. It tells you the history of the breeds , how to train them , and what to exspect when you adopt one into your home. I'm a owner of 2 lovable american pitbull terrier puppies.....

We found this book informative and well written. Most of the information seems directed towards people new to the breed. Helpful description explaining the basic personality of the breed, and some helpful health tips round this book out to be good reading material for people interested in purchasing an American Pit Bull Terrier.

This book is a "must have" for anyone with a pit or amstaff. It covers all the basic information about the care of the breed. It's written in an easy to read format and contains great pictures. I'll keep this book as a reference.

detailed overview with great pictures & historical data.......1999-07-05

Overall the very best book I've come across about the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The pictures are great, lots of color, plenty of variety. Historical perspective is very detailed, going back to the ancient fighting dogs of Rome, but it ties in very nicely with the development of this great breed. Also, lots of great segments regarding temperament, breed disposition and characteristics. Way too much text about breeding/whelping/kenneling and general care which is not really specific to our breed here. I think a book about a breed as special as Staffs should not waste any text whatsoever with general care which is information that can be obtained through any dog book. As mentioned earlier, the pictures are really nice. In fact, the picture on the front cover looks exactly like my own pet female, Molly! All in all, I really enjoy this book and feel it provides the most accurate and insightfull description of the breed that I've come across thus far.

I'm a big fan of junk! Whether it be creepy big-eyed dolls or funky tiki mugs, I love junk! So when I saw Mary Randolph Carter's book Garden Junk: How to Grow Your Garden Gloriusly and Uniquely with All the Right Stuff, I knew I had found the bible of garden books. Not only does the author show you everything she buys from flea markets and garage sales, she also tells you how much it was and what she did with it. Each chapter takes you into the realm of old tools, found flower art, bizarre pots and watering cans, funky pot holders, tacky garden hats, forgotten yard furniture, absurd-yet-endearing vases and hip-looking birdbaths. I love her addiction to kitschy amateur paintings of flowers and plants. And if you're just in the mood to create, Mary shows you how to restore old shutters, de-rust antique tools, build a gardener's bulletin board (one of my favorite projects), make a rake rack, makeover a windowbox and create a scarecrow from scratch! She also gives you the lowdown on how she transformed an old, boring barn into her fabulous Garden Hutte! Plus the lavish photographs and layout of the book makes it do double duty as a hipster coffeetable book.

I'm astounded at those who found no "substance" in this joyous and lyrical work. This remarkable woman's sincere and candidly expressed love of the old, the shabby, the discarded, ignored, and forlorn -- of things with honest character and a deep beauty when recognized by an open sensibility and given a proper home -- is a fun yet deeply moving (to me) expression of an overwhelmingly authentic heart.

Ms. Carter has a superb eye when she chooses to exercise it (check out which of those decrepit metal chairs on page 172-3 made it home to glory on page 42 -- not to mention the superb "city house" Adirondack chair on page 179, and many other "found" icons throughout). Her prose is both witty and chipper, yet deeply feeling for the simple things of the world, and the homely pleasures they offer.

Of course, everyone will find her accepting to a fault with regard to some item or another; but given her "whole greater than the sum of the parts" approach, its no surprise that these soul-invested objects all manage to find acceptance somewhere.

I feel that I've met a dear friend in the pages of this book; someone who lives the transforming power of love and has invited us into her very special world. To think that this exuberant spirit is not only a full-time junker, but also a wife and mother -- and a VP at Ralph Lauren! I'm curious to know what her husband is, besides one lucky hombre. I'd give a lot of stuff (and tolerate even more) to call a woman of this quality my own. And she takes excellent pictures, too....

I enjoyed looking at all the wonderful ideas that Mary Randolph Carter creates with her salvaged finds. She definitely gives junk a new life and the book will make everyone think twice before throwing out something. She has definitely opened my eyes. Simply, it is just plain fun!

Carter's Got A Green Thumb for Junk.......1999-07-02

I've got to disagree with the readers who found no substance in this book! Curious to know what they were looking for? I found not only substance, but lots of inspiration. Being a veteran of junk prowls I loved the way MRC took me along and told all--where, how much, what to do with it. I guess substance is in the eye of the beholder. I've just read that her third junk book--Kitchen Junk--will be published in September. I can't wait!

I bought this book as soon as it came back into print. I was eager to read it because I have seen a lot of references to it, but was never able to find it anywhere. I own Hassler's 'Practical Junk Rig' as well. Hassler and McLeod are a bit overly meticulous in their description of the rig. Darek Van Loan greatly simplifies the matter. The methodical approach of Hassler and McLeod can intimidate. Derek Van Loan approaches it from a 'just do it' perspective. He makes it clear that your effort might not produce a perfect Junk sail on your first effort, but it will almost certainly work. Perfection comes with being persistent.

Fascinating.......2003-09-21

Very much like the 1908 Revolution from the same author, this book continues to challenge the mainstream Turkish studies in many respects. A real scholarly work that deserves much more attention that it has received so far.
