Customer Reviews:
Sticks to breed specifics; want more color photos.......2007-09-28
This book was recommended highly, and I was not disappointed! The information coverage is all that I expected and more. So many dog books digress into information that applies to all dogs, but this one sticks to breed specifics.
There is only one thing I would improve in future editions: more photos in color. However, knowing that many of the historical photos were originally in black & white, I would not edit them out... the idea is merely to add more full-color recent photos, especially showing the full range of Aussie activities, trials, games, etc. One can never see too many beautiful Aussies!
the essential aussie book.......2007-03-23
Loved all the info and the detailed account of where these amazing dogs come from. As I anticipate the arrival of my first Aussie puppy I have read and reread the puppy portions. I love that they included a chapter on the Mini-Aussie which is what I am getting. They are not some freakish version, only developed by breeding some of the finest smaller Aussies. I will keep this book as a reference forever. A fabulous gift for the Aussie owner.
All the basics of the breed, and the show business for Aussies, are thoroughly explained in this 'bible' of detail.......2007-01-07
This is no light coverage from an outsider, but an in-depth survey of the Australian Shepard breed by a third generation breeder who has been involved in their training and upkeep since childhood. And if ALL ABOUT AUSSIES: THE AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD A TO Z sounds familiar, that's because it appears here in a brand new 3rd updated edition which offers not just new photos, but a new chapter devoted to Miniature Aussies. All the basics of the breed, and the show business for Aussies, are thoroughly explained in this 'bible' of detail, highly recommended.

This book is an excellent resource for the pet owner, breeder and judge. I would highly recommend this book as it is very thorough.
Big book, but easy reading.......2006-11-05
I bought this book as we were researching the Australian Shepherd breed. I found it very helpful and complete. It was also easy reading. I seemed to finish the book in no time at all.

You would not believe the things this dog Pete puts in his stomach. An accordion, for starters. Then an eggbeater, a glue stick, Mrs. Parsley's pink pocketbook, and cousin Rocky's underpants. ("Uggh!") Pete's faithful mistress, Poppy Wise, is at her wit's end. And yet, she can't help loving that dog. ("Quite a lot.") So, from A to Z (in a loose, meandering way), Poppy inventories her insatiable pooch's intake, with loads of parenthetical asides, witty commentary, and an unforgettable cast of characters. Maira Kalman, zany and talented source of Next Stop Grand Central, Ooh-la-la (Max in Love), and other exquisitely quirky picture books, uses the alphabet as a framework for what is truly an ode to a well-loved if incorrigible--dog. Her spectacularly rich gouache paintings are just the thing to illustrate this linguistic playpen. Read this one aloud-kids and adults alike will sit enthralled. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

Is there anything Pete won't eat? Poppy's charming yellow dog starts off by eating Rocky's accordion. All of it. He snacks on a bouncing ball that belongs to Uncle Bennie's dog Buster, and then makes a meal out of the rest of the alphabet. From glue sticks to underpants, Pete works his way through all twenty-six letters in Maira Kalman's creative take on traditional alphabet books. Packed with Kalman's trademark bright artwork and a hilarious story filled with wordplay and repetition, this alphabet book is pure fun from A to Z.
Customer Reviews:
One of my son's favorite books.......2005-12-18
Great book. I have read to my 3 year old son a hundred times, he loves it and it has letters from A-Z. Not your normal book for pre-schoolers because it's interesting for adults too. I am giving it for XMas gifts to nephews.
What Pete Ate from A to Z.......2003-09-26
What Pete ate from A to Z was about little dog that liked to eat many things he shouldn't. Each time they tell you about a new thing he ate it starts with the next letter of the alphabet. Sometimes when they told you the thing he ate they would also tell you a little about what he was eating. Finally at the end of the book you find out the one thing Pete won't eat, but I'll let you find that out for yourselves. This book teaches kids about the Alphabet and also what things might be edible and what things are not edible, Morocco, the continent of Africa, what you do with money, and not to take other peoples things without asking them first. I recommend this book because it not only teaches you about the alphabet but about also about things that start with those letters. This book would be good for kids around the age of 3-5 yeas old.
AS GOOD AS ALL HER OTHERS - WHICH IS GREAT!.......2003-07-12
Maira Kalman does it again. She has written a book that I (as a godmother) love to read over and over to my god-daughter who loves to hear it again and again. Everytime we read it, we find something new to say about it and talk about. This writer is so original and charming and even, sophisticated. Her style is very conversational and really creative. She is a perfect companion to see the world with... New York's Grand Central Station, India, Paris and even Hollywood (from her Max series). The children that I read this book to respond to her curious and playful nature. She doesn't pander to kids but challenges them and invites them into her original and artistic world.
The Amazing, Alphabetical Pete...........2001-11-21
Meet Poppy Wise and her dog Pete. When it comes to eating, Pete is far from discriminating. If fact, he'll eat just about anything. So Poppy begins at the beginning with the letter A and chronicles exactly what this ever-hungry canine has gotten into. Moving letter by letter this includes Cousin Rocky's Accordion...All of it, a Camera, an Eggbeater, a Fez, and her brother's magic Key. At the Lucky dog show he ate all the Leashes which Let Loose all the dogs. A bit later he ate Mrs Parlsey's Pink Pocketbook, a Stinky Sneaker, Cousin Rocky's Underpants (Uggh!), and a Yo-yo. And as Poppy finally tells us, the only thing Pete won't eat is Zug Zug Dog Grub..... Maira Kalman has written a charming and hilarious walk through the alphabet that's full of unforgettable characters, wordplay, irreverent commentary, and witty asides. Both kids and adults will smile, giggle and eventually laugh out loud at the antics of four legged eating machine. Her delightful and energetic text is told in an easy to read, conversational style, and complemented by bold, bright and busy child-like artwork. Youngsters will enjoy poring over the pictures and finding all the silly details on each page. Perfect for kids 4-8, What Pete Ate From A-Z is a special, joyous romp, that makes a terrific gift, and is a wonderful addition to all home bookshelves.
Book Description
The first question to answer when bringing a newly acquired dog into the home is: What shall we call himor her? This delightful little book offers guidelines and suggestions to help pet owners come up with the perfect answer. For instance, what is the canine's type and character? (It would be plain silly, for example, to name a Great Dane Fluffy; or to call a male canine of any breed, Brenda.) But you might want to make a fashion statement, or say something about yourself when you name that pooch. (For instance, a music lover might bless his puppy with a name like Beethoven or Vivaldi.) Perhaps the author's wisest suggestion is to hold a family conference, simply to make certain that everybodyincluding the dogis comfortable with the new name. Here, in any event, are 1000 ideas for naming that puppy. They're listed alphabetically, and enhanced with dozens of endearing color photos.

Customer Reviews:
A must-have alphabet book!.......2005-08-02
In my elementary ed. teaching classes, our reading methods teacher shared this book as a fun way to explore the alphabet and expand vocabulary with both English and ESL students.
When I had my son two years ago, my parents got him the book, and from 13 months on, he has continually asked to read it and look at the pictures. The illustrations are vivid and action-oriented, so it captures and keeps a young child's attention the whole book long. It it a great way to introduce your young child to new vocabulary words as well. For example, A is for "Arf", and I would tell my son "Doggy barking." B is for ball "Doggy caught the ball." C is for "catch", "Doggy caught the ball." He must have learned 100 words from this book alone and the short phrases/sentences I made up to add to each page describing what each doggy was doing.
This is one alphabet book a parent needs to add to his child's library! I would recommend it for any child ages 1-5
Jump!.......2000-11-02
This is a really great book. The dogs are so cute, they'll break your heart. My son's favorite is the dog jumping through the hoop. He's really cute -- I only wish my dog were so well trained! We also like the springer spaniel puppy, because she looks just like our dog Allie! A must for dog lovers of all ages.
My ten-month-old daughter is devoted to this book!.......2000-01-15
We have read this book on a near-daily basis for the last 5 months. It always brings a smile, even when Kate is recovering from a bump or scare. The dog photos are very appealing to the baby, especially the ones (Mutt, Good dog!, Jump!) where the dog's expression looks like a smile. A bonus is the wonderful photo collages that adorn the end pages front and back of the book; they are at least as good as the photos in the actual text. My husband and I fell in love with the book in the bookstore, but it has proven even more alluring to the baby. Unlike our real dog, Arf Beg Catch doesn't get up and walk away from being handled. I'm thinking about buying another copy against the day when we wear the first one out!
An outstanding alphabet book sure to become a favorite!.......1999-11-16
Adults as well as children will adore this unique alphabet book. Both the upper and lower case letters are displayed for education purposes. But the real fun of the book are the delightful and engaging photographs of the dogs in action shots. (The cover photo has me puzzled though. Has that dog been tossed up in the air?) Delightful browser as well as an educational tool for learning the alphabet.
Clever book with fun pictures for all ages.......1999-10-01
Although the reading level begins at age 4 years, my 8 month old son has become very fond of this book. The pictures are exciting and stimulating. He smiles when the book is brought out and cries when we put it away. Overall, an entertaining book for any age.

Book Description
This work has three major sub-goals: first, to give a history of cats in general from earliest recorded times to the present. Second, to cover 26 different cats (or cat species) in alphabetical order, so the reader has a representative feline for each of the alphabet's 26 letters. Third, to accomplish these ends through poetry.
The poetic mode was chosen to give reader a little different slant on each covered cat's special qualities and temperament. An additional prose portion gives the reader a straightforward description of each cat's natural territory and a brief coverage of its special talents and challenges. The overall goal was to make learning about cats both fun and educational and make us more fully appreciate our feline friends.

These kits are a waste of time and money. If you want to start with bonsai. Buy one of the beginning bonsai books offered by amazon. Harry Tomlinson's book is a good start. Then...go to your local nursery and buy a few inexpensive potted shrubs -- far better material then you could ever achieve with the seeds in this kit, and saves you about ten years of work and wait. Please do not support the charlatan peddlers of these little rip off kits.
