5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for professionals & volunteers in AAA/T.......1996-06-21

As more people get involved in the field of animal-assisted activities and animal-assisted therapy (AAA/T), it is important that references written by experienced, credible professionals are available to a wide audience. This will ensure the safety and benefit of all those involved in AAA/T. This book is just such a reference. It doesn't just apply to volunteers--health and human service professionals will also find this book to be an invaluable resource.

I initially picked up the book because I'm familiar with Mary's work in the field of AAA/T. I found myself reading the entire book in one evening. A week later, when I was preparing myself to be a guest on a radio show about AAA/T, the book became my primary reference and provided some examples.

Particularly helpful are the descriptions of the various client populations and facilities that a volunteer may visit. The suggestions for activities for each population and facility will be useful for the volunteer and professional, alike. Case studies are provided to illustrate how to apply the recommended activities.

The safety and enjoyment of the animals that participate in AAA/T is also addressed, ensuring that they will benefit from the experience.

Applying the information contained in Mary's book will help increase the acceptance of AAA/T as an effective tool in the improvement of the health and lives of the clients who receive and participate in this method of therapy.

I highly recommend this book.

Ralph Sanders does an excellent job of explaining the history of the Farmall from the invention of the reaper all the way to the Tenneco buyout of International Harvester. Excellent pictures, useful and historical text, and wonderful explainations of every tractor pictured. Pictured tractors have some of the best restorations that I have ever seen! A great book for anyone interested in the history of the Farmall line of tractors and International Harvester Company.

What makes or breaks a picture? Composition, of course, and perhaps less obvious but equally fundamental--light. "Subtle or dramatic, the impact of light on an image completely alters how that image is perceived," asserts Jim Zuckerman, who discusses the qualities of light--direction, diffusion, harshness--and how to use them as creative tools. There are many impressive color photographs (including twilight panoramas of Rio de Janeiro and interiors of Spanish architectural wonders), but few illuminate Zuckerman's text like his multiple images of a bikini-clad model on a beach, taken during a rapidly-changing sunset. While he is generous with technical details and data, he does not cover black and white photography.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good library addition.......2002-11-05

Mr Zuckerman's detailed & deep discussion of aspects of all the photos in the book gives insight into the process behind each one.

4 out of 5 stars Great reading or for just plain inspiration.......2001-07-26

The photos in this book is worth the price alone. The cover is probably one of the best safari photos I've seen to date and just makes me want to make a trip out to Africa! The great part is the techniques and technical data is shared so you can know exactly what was done. In any case the other great thing about this book is many of the photos are shown in different light. Similar books only show you the subject in the light the photographer thought was best. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fine book on the most basic of topics - using natural light.......2001-07-02

One of the hardest things to learn about existing light photography is how things will appear on film under various lighting conditions. This book explains most common situations clearly, and illustrates them beautifully with a selection of the author's fine images.

1 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere.......2001-05-16

The book is divided into 'Sunrise', 'Early Morning/Late Afternoon', 'Midday', 'Sunset', 'Twilight', 'Overcast Conditions', 'Interios' and 'Special Conditions'. Each chapter has a series of photographs with describing text and technical details for each shot. Zuckerman is using medium format (and almost exclusively Velvia), although the book is by no means restricted to any particular format. If you have some other book describing exposure, there's not much new in here. The text feels very repetetive, saying the same over and over again only with different words.

This is the first book I've bought by Zuckerman and it will most likely be the last. I didn't even feel like finishing this one. I find his photographs mostly boring, soulless, stereotypical and unimaginative. Some are so clichés it's almost funny, yet also demotivating. But what can you expect from a photographer that studies "postcards in book stores or gift shops" as the "first things I [Zuckerman] do when I'm shooting the scenic highlights of any city, whether foreign or domestic" (p. 82).

I also have John Shaw's "Nature Photography Field Guide" and it's definitely better on the text side. Zuckerman's book adds little to what you can get from Shaw's book, and the latter is far more comprehensive. Shaw's photography is better than Zuckerman's too.

I give this book one star as it gives so little, both in terms of text (there are far better and more comprehensive books) and pictures (postcards).

4 out of 5 stars Great Movitator, Good Technical Detail.......2001-02-13

Although there may not be a tremendous amount of new information here for serious photographers, the author offers a lot of reinforcement of basic techniques applied to specific lighting situations. It was very helpful that the book is organized by categories of lighting such as sunrise, mid-morning, etc. Many of the photographs are excellent and motivating.

    Book Description

Daylighting offers a general theory and introduction to the use of natural light in architecture.

The fourth of Derek Phillip's lighting books draws on his experience to illustrate how best to bring natural light into building design. As sustainability becomes a core principal for designers, daylighting comes to the fore as an alternative to artificial, energy consuming, light. Here, Phillips makes a rational argument for considering daylight first, outlining the arguments in favour of a daylight approach, and goes on to show, through a series of
beautifully illustrated case studies, how architects have created buildings in which natural light has been shown to play a major strategic role in the development of the design of a building.

    * Learn how to incorporate daylight into a wide range of building design types
    * Be informed about the most 'sustainable' of lighting techniques
    * International case studies including examples from the UK, Hong Kong and USA inspire the reader and illustrate best practice

    Download Description

In general window and lighting systems in buildings are not operated as an integrated system. As a result, the daylighting features of buildings-any type of window or skylight that brings outdoor light to the building's interior-rarely reduces a building's energy use as much as it could. Daylighting, when done well, can reduce building energy use substantially by reducing its need for electric lighting, cooling and heating. Research suggests that in a daytime-occupied commercial building, proper daylighting could reduce the total electricity and peak demand between 20 and 40 percent. Daylighting offers a general theory and introduction to the use of natural light in architecture. The fourth of Derek Phillip's lighting books draws on his experience to illustrate how best to bring natural light into building design.

      * Provides building professionals with knowledge, tools and information on the efficient use of natural ventilation in urban buildings
      * Key design principles are explained, enabling readers to decide on the best solution for building ventilation, taking into account climate and building context
      * Includes free CD-ROM with software for assessing the potential for natural ventilation of a given site by comparison with base sites. The methodologies and tools are tested, self-contained and user friendly

Natural ventilation reduces the energy consumption of a building by minimizing the use of air conditioning and mechanical ventilation. This book focuses on natural ventilation in an urban context.
The basic principle of natural ventilation in urban areas is as follows: for a building located in a given urban environment, find the pressure differences across the building envelope (or the natural ventilation potential) and then optimize the airflow function (or optimally design the openings) in order to obtain the airflow that ensures indoor air quality and comfort with minimum energy consumption.
The book covers assessment of the pressure and temperature distribution around buildings in an urban context and guides the reader toward appropriate solutions for different classes of urban environment and building typology. It is self-contained and will be an essential resource for professionals and students when adopting energy-efficient strategies in building design.

5 out of 5 stars Great soft coral primer........2000-12-08

I'm more of a technical reader that needs very definite explanations and whys. Great book. I read the whole book in 1 sitting. Too bad it had to end so soon. The laminated pictures are cool too.

              4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2000-09-30

Very informative book about soft corals, but it could have been a lot better: it speaks too vague about corals, it talks about the families and class of soft corals. I've learned some things with this book ( why soft corals uses iodine, etc ) .. Its a shame that it doesnt go more deeper and more informative: it could select the most representative corals from each family and make a quick guide ( light, position, etc etc ). It does contain a LOT of pictures, all of them in excelent quality. Too bad the book its so small ( 64 pages ... :( ), but you cant ask much more for a 10$ book. I'd recommend it to the begginner / intermediate reefer, no information for a advanced one ( a part from listing all the classes and taxonomy of soft corals ).

Add this book to your order if you make a big order and would like to read something in the bus :)
