Book Description
Why do dogs bark? Why do dogs like to bury bones and dig in the dirt? Can you train them to refrain from these natural behaviors? How do you choose the perfect canine companion? Can you "allergy-proof" your dog? Can you train your dog to like the mailperson? Your boyfriend? Your grandchildren? How do you know if a dog is depressed? Stressed? Sick? Happy? In fourteen information-packed chapters, H. Ellen Whiteley, D.V.M., answers these and hundreds of other vital questions about raising healthy and happy dogs in your home. Each chapter includes a letter from a concerned dog owner, and Dr. Whiteley's advice to that owner. Whiteley, an award-winning author, draws upon her experiences as a practicing veterinarian and her years as pet columnist for publications such as "The Saturday Evening Post," "Woman's World," "Milwaukee Sentinel" and others to write a book filled with interesting and insightful anecdotes about dogs and their people that will keep you turning pages long after you've discovered the answers to your specific questions. H. Ellen Whiteley is the author of "Understanding and Training Your Cat or Kitten," Animals and Other Teachers" and the coauthor of "Women in Veterinary Medicine: Profiles of Success," all from Sunstone Press, as well as "Train Your Dog in No Time" from Que Publishing. She has been a veterinarian for over thirty years, with job descriptions as diverse as military veterinarian; national rabies awareness spokesperson; poultry inspector; instructor of veterinary technology; and practicing veterinarian. An avid hiker, Whiteley has trekked in Nepal and climbed Africa's Kilimanjaro. She and her husband George live in Guadalupita, New Mexico. For more information, visit her website: www.DrWhiteley.com
Customer Reviews:
Good for any dog lover.......2002-09-19
This book was fun to read and filled with unusual examples. The author was a columnist for the Milwaukee Sentinel years ago, and I remember her writing about such interesting animals and people. The author manages to instruct about canine behavior and health without boring the reader. I wish I had read Chapter Fourteen about death and dying before letting my veterinarian "dispose" of my beloved dog's body. This chapter discusses wills, surviving pet programs, animal and human grieving, funeral services, freeze-drying, mummification, taxidermy, burial, and cremation. Not that I would have had my dog mummified or stuffed, but I might have opted for cremation if I'd had time to consider the options. Good book to have on hand before adopting a puppy or older dog. Recommended for all dog lovers.
"Dog-gone" good!.......2002-09-16
Dr. Whiteley, who lives in what she calls dog country, is a vet in rural New Mexico. She gives an interesting account of her canine neighbors--Smokey, the
150-pound, cat hating malamute who howls at the mailman; Chow, the friendly, black-tongued extrovert prone to wandering; and Tiger, the four-pound
Chihuahua, who "trees" bears. It is the author's examples and personal tales that give life and interest to this book about understanding and raising healthy
dogs. Even if you are dogless, you will enjoy this book. The author explains why the Catahoula hog dogs of her native Louisiana were given away rather than
sold; why the most decorated canine of World War II was such a great fighter; why Old Yeller, the protagonist from a novel by Fred Gipson, is representative of a
ancestral type; and what American explorer John C. Fremont said about eating dogs. And, I haven't even mentioned the humorous tales of her experiences as a
practicing veterinarian. I highly recommend this book.
Canine behavior/misbehavior tips, + great personal stories.......2002-09-15
I have read many books about dog behavior and health, and this is one of my favorites. The author, a practicing veterinarian for over thirty years, offers intersting anecdotes to illustrate normal and abnormal canine behavior. She gives instructions for training, retraining, and correcting misbehavior, plus chapters devoted to caring for puppies, the geriatric dog, and preparing for the inevitable--the death of a pet. Recommended!

Though only available used, this is a must read for dog lovers!.......2007-02-12
Bonnie Bergin is the pioneer in training assistance dogs, she started Canine Companions 30 years ago, and in this book she provides a wonderful review of dog history with man, how to understand dog mind, and specifics on training dogs. I consider this a basic on dogs which I will keep.

Book Description
This book introduces the reader to the area of inverse problems. A relatively new branch of Applied Mathematics, the study of inverse problems is of vital interest to many areas of science and technology such as geophysical exploration, system identification, nondestructive testing and ultrasonic tomography.
The aim of this book is twofold: in the first part, the reader is exposed to the basic notions and difficulties encountered with ill-posed problems. Basic properties of regularization methods for linear ill-posed problems are studied by means of several simple analytical and numerical examples.
The second part of the book presents two special nonlinear inverse problems in detail - the inverse spectral problem and the inverse scattering problem. The corresponding direct problems are studied with respect to existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence on parameters. Then some theoretical results as well as numerical procedures for the inverse problems are discussed. The choice of material and its presentation in the book are new, thus making it particularly suitable for graduate students. Basic knowledge of real analysis is assumed.
Customer Reviews:
Nice book.......2001-09-10
I disagree with the negative rating that was given by Colin Fox. In my view the book is a well-written introduction to a lot of mathematical terms used in theoretical works on inverse problems. Although the methods may be outdated a little, the mathematical basis of the methods seems to be very good and the examples are easy to understand. The book is focussed on continuous eigenvalue, potential and scattering problems. For discrete inverse problems it is probably wiser to consider a different book. This book helped me to understand the work of mathematicians such as Colton and Kress better. Since I do not have a very mathematical background, I'm curious what theoretical mathematicians say about it.
A real dud.......2001-03-07
I am a mathematician working in inverse poblems (particularly statistical methods) and have had substantial experience of practical problems. As much as I enjoy mathematics and inverse problems in particular, this book gave me no joy. It is a collection of outdated and proven to be useless ideas, the kind that get promoted by theoreticians that have never actually got involved with measured data. This book is a genuine dud, and if I could give it minus ten stars I would. My fear is that people will read this ugly book and be put off the study of a useful, beautiful and blosoming field of mathematics. Please instead look at the books "Rank-Deficient and Discrete Ill-Posed Problems" by Per Christian Hansen for a fantastic view of what can be done for linear inversion, or the books by Colton and Kress for a view of more theoretical analyses of certain forward problems.

Book Description
Inverse Problems in Scattering exposes some of the mathematics which has been developed in attempts to solve the one-dimensional inverse scattering problem. Layered media are treated in Chapters 1--6 and quantum mechanical models in Chapters 7--10. Thus, Chapters 2 and 6 show the connections between matrix theory, Schur's lemma in complex analysis, the Levinson--Durbin algorithm, filter theory, moment problems and orthogonal polynomials. The chapters devoted to the simplest inverse scattering problems in quantum mechanics show how the Gel'fand--Levitan and Marchenko equations arose. The introduction to this problem is an excursion through the inverse problem related to a finite difference version of Schrödinger's equation. One of the basic problems in inverse quantum scattering is to determine what conditions must be imposed on the scattering data to ensure that they correspond to a regular potential, which involves Lebesque integrable functions, which are introduced in Chapter 9.

Inverse Acoustic and Electromagnetic Scattering Theory (Applied Mathematical Sciences)
ASIN: 3540288449 |
Book Description
Inverse scattering theory has been a particularly active and successful field in applied mathematics and engineering for the past twenty years. The increasing demands of imaging and target identification require new powerful and flexible techniques besides the existing weak scattering approximation or nonlinear optimization methods. One class of such methods comes under the general description of qualitative methods in inverse scattering theory. This textbook is an easily-accessible "class-tested" introduction to the field. It is accessible also to readers who are not professional mathematicians, thus making these new mathematical ideas in inverse scattering theory available to the wider scientific and engineering community.
