5 out of 5 stars Tale of Two Horses.......2006-06-12

This is by far the greatest horseback travel ride ever accomplished. You can't put this book down from cover to cover. If you like this title you're sure to like the sequel "A Tale of Two Horses", the same ride but told by the horses themselves "Mancha & Gato"!

5 out of 5 stars Adventure/Travel literature from the golden age of that genre........2005-09-16

An Argentinian by the name of Tschiffely travels by horseback across South and Central and North America 3 years from Buenos Aires to Washington DC. He was very famous in his time, meeting with President Coolidge, articles and speeches in National Geographic, newspapers, etc.. every country along his path gave him golden receptions. I'm sure most peoples grandparents remember him (although he is probably mostly forgotten today!). Parts of this book were printed in National Geographic Magazine (in the 1930s).

Written in a straight forward but very readable and enjoyable style, it is one adventure after the next, each page is literally a new encounter. It can be an exhausting read at times. One admires Tschiffely's physical strength and morally strong character (not withstanding the opium den experiment). As well as his affection, bond and care for his horses and all living creatures (this is also a horse lovers tale).

Latin America in the 1930s was a time when cars, electricity, TV's and radio, phones, etc.. existed only in isolated pockets, when Spanish conquistador history still lay heavy over the land. Brilliant first person encounters and observations of the individuals and cultures that history books would not as well convey, and that are now lost to modernity. It is also interesting how nearly impossible it was to travel north/south in Latin America even just 70 years ago due to geography (by comparison travel by horse east-west across America would be a less interesting story being done so often).

Overall a very good book. At times things seems to repeat (another town, another fiesta) and the authors ability to keep things new escapes him toward the end (perhaps due to his malaria) so it starts to feel like a journal, but that is a minor quibble for a classic travel adventure book.

5 out of 5 stars The most amazing story ever told..........2005-04-06

well okay maybe not but I enjoyed this book from cover to cover. Despite, or maybe because of, the simple matter-of-fact writing style this tale of an amazing, yet true, journey held my interest and I enjoyed every page.

The book is basically a diary of Tschiffely's ride from inception to end, he writes simply of the trails taken, the hardships and joys and the people he met along the way. This is a tale of a bygone era when great adventures were undertaken without enormous budgets or near hysterical live reportage. Pages describe what must have been terrifying events with endearing understatement and the sort of modesty that most modern day heros cannot muster.

Not only does this book put you into a different time and place but it encourages you to consider the possibilities within yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Ride With Tschiffley Through a Vanished World.......2001-04-18

Aime Tschiffley, the most resiliant and capable of Buenos Aires' schoolmasters, wrote this truly astonishing story of his ride from Argentina to Washington, DC. South and Central America before WWII was still in many ways as the old Spanish had left it - some of it deliciously civilized, much of it as wild as can be imagined. With his two remarkable Creole horses, Mancha and Gato, Tschiffley journeys through a world that no longer exists today and seems remote and ancient to the modern reader. Tschiffley's prose is somewhat matter-of-fact, but in some ways this serves to emphasise the very strangeness of the countryside and its peoples, and underscores the author's own courage. Tshiffley is a product of his times, and some of his sentiments are out of place today, but this too places this book within a time and place long past. From "Don Roberto's" oddly moving introduction to journey's end in the United States, one grows to admire Tschiffley and love his horses, the two friends Mancha and Gato.

5 out of 5 stars FROM A TIME LONG PAST.......1999-12-14

FROM BUENOS AIRES TO WASHINGTON DC IN TWO AND A HALF YEARS ON HORSEBACK. A.F. TSCHIFFELY RODE TEN THOUSAND MILES FROM THE SOUTHERN CROSS TO THE POLAR STAR AROUND 1930. HE MORE THAN LIKELY WAS THE ONLY MAN EVER TO DO THIS AT ANY TIME; CERTAINLY TO WRITE ABOUT IT. REMOTE CITIES AND SEAPORTS, BACK TO THE PAST AND ON LONELY TRAILS DID THE MAN TRAVEL. TOUCHING FROM TIME TO TIME ON HARDSHIP, SOLVING PROBLEMS, CONFRONTING THE CURIOUS, HE AND HIS TWO HORSES HAD A GREAT ADVENTURE.

5 out of 5 stars Very exciting adventure.......1998-12-23

It's a bold undertaking by a man who learned to live very closely with two horses. The horses were the resource that enabled him to succeed in this adventure of 10,000 miles from Buenos Aires to Washington DC. It's a page-turner!

              Book Description

The true story of the most famous equestrian journey of the 20th Century, this is the thrilling account of thirty months spent in the saddle where danger and excitement were a daily occurrence.

In 1925, Aimé Tschiffely, a Swiss teacher living in Argentina, set out on his epic ride with two Criollo horses, and traveled 10,000 miles from Buenos Aires to Washington DC.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A most amazing horse tale.......2004-03-17

This is a most incredible story about Aime Tschiffley and his 2 criollo horse, Mancha and Gato, who in 1925, walked/rode from Argentina all the way to Washington, DC. The journey carried them 10,000 miles in 2-1/2 years across the most inhospitable and remote regions one can imagine. They endured heat and cold, sickness and hunger, climbed the Andes and walked the depths of the rain forests. In the end, they were welcomed as heros everywhere they went. Tschiffley even met with the President in the oval office and spoke before the National Geographic Society. The most heart-warming part of this improbable tale is the bond between man and horse. It's sad at times, as when Mancha was struck by a car, and comedic at times, as when Mancha bucked his way through an award presentation ceremony in a Mexico City bullring. The last pages of the book are guaranteed to put a lump in your throat. What a great read, even if it was published in 1933!

                    Book Description

Feminists have argued that the Barbie doll perpetuates unrealistic standards of feminine beauty and undermines the credibility of women. Yet, for every mother who disapproves of Barbie, there is a young daughter who adores her. Barbie has enjoyed a prosperous and important history in Western culture, but she is simply the most high-profile of a series of iconic dolls produced in the past 150 years. For the first time, this history is explored to reveal how intimately connected dolls have been to fashion and culture, from their early history right up to the present day. The prominence of haute couture in popular culture suggests that the link between fashion marketing and dolls should be an obvious one. Yet to date this connection has not been adequately interrogated. Peers' original and shrewd analysis fills a major gap in cultural studies by examining the doll's associations with concepts of femininity and fashionability.

Andrew Wilson's Influential Gardeners portrays who's who among 20th-century landscape designers, pinpointing how they created their effects and shaped gardening taste. Through engaging profiles of 56 garden stars and over 180 superb photographs, Wilson illustrates how garden design, an art form as ancient as Eden, broke free in the last century to become a more dynamic, diverse, and intellectually vital art.

Wilson, director of Garden Design Studies at London's Inchbald School of Design, places the gardeners into seven different groups, according to the element most potent in their work--color and decoration, plants, concept, form, structure, texture, or materials. In masterly distilled overviews, he leads his readers through sites as famous as "decorator" Vita Sackville-West's Sissinghurst and into less familiar territory such as Kathryn Gustafson's remarkable form-driven, deconstructed landscape at Terrasson-la-Villedieu, France, which features a wide gilded aluminum ribbon woven through tree canopies. Along the way, Wilson points out themes threading through the century, such as reactions against the Beaux-Arts tradition and the impact of modernism. Whenever possible, the designer's own garden is showcased.

Influential Gardeners is a beautifully designed book, written in a clear style that is never over the head of the general reader. Sticklers might take issue with Wilson's tidy categorization. Nonetheless, the organizational focus provides a useful way into what the author sees as a "golden age of gardens."--Jennifer Wyatt

                                    Book Description

Influential Gardeners reveals the history and development of garden and landscape design in the 20th century by focusing on 56 key personalities who have shaped—and continue to form—today’s taste. In the 20th century, garden and landscape designers in Europe and the United States began to apply the same design principles to smaller private garden or to public spaces as had previously been applied to country estates.

From early stars such as Gertrude Jekyll, Thomas Church, and Geoffrey Jellicoe to pivotal contemporary designers such as Kathryn Gustafson, Peter Walker, and Jacques Wirtz, the garden designers celebrated here put this into perspective.

A knowledge of nature and plants, as well as an aesthetic eye for color, scale, and proportion are all needed by any influential gardener. However, the designers whose work is featured in depth are organized by their prime focus—color and decoration (including Vita Sackville-West and Penelope Hobhouse), plants (including Beth Chatto and Piet Udolph), concept (including Isamu Noguchi and Martha Schwartz), form (including Frank Lloyd Wright and Ted Smyth), structure (including Russell Page and Dan Kiley), texture (including Roberto Burle Marx and Vladimir Sitta), or materials (including Gilles Clément and Topher Delaney). Andrew Wilson’s authoritative text is full of anecdotes and quotes that provide unique insight into each designer’s work, while photographs and plans showcase their masterworks.

With more than 180 glorious photographs of both historic and contemporary schemes, Influential Gardeners is an essential reference book for anyone—whether a practicing garden designer or an enthusiast—who wishes to know more about the “greats” of 20th-century garden and design.

                                      Book Description

The history of universities has long been an object of scholarly research. Nonetheless, the proposed questions and themes have too often been handled in isolation. The present collection, divided into three thematic sections, attempts to connect subjects which are bound together in the context of the idea of the university and the course of its historical realization. The first section concentrates on the rational process which characterized the development of the university. Section two is devoted to the relationship between the organizational forms of the university and the literary forms of university texts. Section three concerns itself with the differentiation and institutionalization of schools of thought in the later Middle Ages. The volume contains fourteen studies resulting from new and original research and concludes with an extensive bibliography.
