Book Description
From the time of the cave dwellers, people have been fascinated by animal behavior. Until recently, though, philosophers, biologists and psychologists could only observe animals' physical traits and make assumptions about their behavior based on what was known about human behavior. Then, in
1973, a new science came of age: ethology, the science of animal behavior. This Companion, written by an international group of specialists, contains 200 entries covering a wide range of topics within this emerging science, including the diverse ways animals select their partners, bring up their
young, organize their societies, and respond to the environment. It also includes a new, detailed subject and animal index which will enable readers to locate a wealth of information on both behavioral concepts and the behavior of particular animals. Carefully and clearly illustrated, and including
a Foreword by the Nobel Laureate, Niko Tinbergen, The Companion to Animal Behavior is an authoritative reference for anyone interested in the animal kingdom.

Reading Egyptian Art: A Hieroglyphic Guide to Ancient Egyptian Painting and Sculpture
ASIN: 029270464X |
Book Description
"This handy reference work covers everything most of us could ever want to know about the subject of ancient Egyptian daily-life and after-life charms, and should be on the shelf of every good personal library devoted to topics Egyptological."
KMT
Amulets are ornaments believed to endow the wearer by magical means with the properties they represent. They were first made in Egypt as early as 4000 BC and were essential adornments for both the living and the dead. Crafted from gold and silver, semiprecious stones, and less valuable materials, they are fine examples of Egyptian art as well as a vital source of evidence for religious beliefs.
In this book, Carol Andrews offers the first comprehensive account of the types of amulets made, their symbolism, and their protective powers. An amuletic foot could be worn to ensure fleetness of foot, a hand for dexterity. The desert-dwelling hare symbolized keenness of the senses, and the hedgehog, which hibernated and survived outside the fertile valley, held connotations of rebirth and triumph over death itself. The ubiquitous amulet in the shape of the dung beetle, known as a scarab, was symbolic of new life. Amulets in the image of powerful gods would be worn for protection, and malevolent creatures, like the male hippopotamus, would be worn to ward off the evil they represented.
Both a reference book and an informative account of Egyptian magical belief, this is the most complete survey of the subject to date.
Customer Reviews:
Egyptian Amulets.......2007-06-11
Still the best comprehensive reference on the subject.
"Amulets" covers a broad range of concepts and ideas that demonstrate what it meant to BE an ancient Egyptian. A superb account of gods, myths, legends, materials used, and most importantly, symbolism. The 112 pages are filled with excellent black & white and color close-ups demonstrating the great skills of the ancient craftsmen.
A great little book that every Egyptologist has on their bookshelf! Goes nicely with Cyril Aldred's "Jewels of the Pharaoh's" Jewels of the Pharaohs: Egyptian Jewelry of the Dynastic Period
Good Survey Book.......2004-08-04
I used this book for my senior thesis in college. While the information is more or less generalized, Andrews still adequately covers the majority of Egyptian amulets in existence. It's definitely a great survey book about amulets from the pre-dynastic to the Graeco-Roman period.
Another plus is that it includes numerous color plates of different kinds of amulets from different periods in Egyptian history.
impressive and compact introduction.......1999-06-20
This is a very nice and lovely done view into ancient craft. The tiny but nevertheless greatly powerful amulets give us an impression about their owners. After reading the book and consider the colourful pictures you feel very close with them.
It was ok.......1998-12-16
I think this book didn't hold enough information. There should be more books about the same subjects, but with more info.
A great book, written by oneof the leading experts on amulets.......1998-08-24
I had the pleasure of hearing the author lecture at an Egyptian conference at the Brooklyn Museum a few years ago. Her fascinatiing text and brilliant slides lose none of their impact as they find their way into print in this handsome little book. Some of Ancient Egypt's most beautiful and magical objects are the smallest in size, as evidenced by the amulets shown here by Ms. Andrews. Required reading for all Egypto-philes!

The Jeweler's Directory Of Decorative Finishes

Book Description
In the Hellenistic period, the Greek world enjoyed great prosperity after Alexander the Great's conquest of the Persian Empire made vast resources of gold available for the first time. The various royal courts of Alexander's successors, including the Ptolemies in Egypt, comprised a wealthy
clientele with a taste for luxury.
The group of gold jewelry discussed here-including earrings, finger rings, bracelets, beads, and a hairnet-consists of seventeen spectacular pieces from the Getty Museum. The author takes us on a journey through three centuries, beginning about B.C. 350, from the empire-building Alexander to
the beguilingly ambitious Kleopatra VII. This sweep through the turbulent history of the eastern Mediterranean gives a picture of the Greek-Egyptian blending of religion and art. The author demonstrates how the symbolism of dynastic power plays a central role in the interpretation of each object and
in understanding the assemblage as a whole. Discussing their style, iconography, and craftsmanship, he convincingly places the jewelry in late third-century-B.C. Ptolemaic Egypt and argues for the original owner's royal connections.

Book Description
Barber concentrates in this book not on the variety of and classification of bronze age artifacts, but the effect bronzemaking had on society and on the status of the craftsmen themselves. Mining, smelting, casting, and deposition are his main focus, as well as the effect the magic of transformation of metals had on society.
Customer Reviews:
How metal working changed society.......2005-05-20
Four stars.
Barber concentrates in this book not on the variety of and classification of bronze age artifacts but the effect on bronze making had on society and on the status of the craftsmen themselves. Mining, smelting casting and deposition are his main focus here as well as the effect the magic of transformation of metals had on society. There are some interesting meditations here. I personally wish more time was spent on the various types of bronze artifacts made in during this period. I also felt too much time was spent on deposition as it is a subject that has been covered quite extensively in other volumes.
Still it is a well written book and I believe worthy of your attention.

Book Description
The fire-and-ice shimmer of carnelian and turquoise in a falcon-shaped necklace, the obsidian gaze of a lapis-encrusted mummy mask, the sheen of pearls and amethyst in a princess's belt, and above all, the dazzling, liquid splendor of gold--representing the quintessence of godliness and encasing the divine Pharaoh's mummy to safeguard his immortality--all of these and more are to be found in the feast for the eyes that is Gold of the Pharaohs. The belief in the magic and divine power of gold led the Egyptians to bury their dead among vast storehouses of treasures. Even after centuries of grave robbing, what remains is so overwhelming that Howard Carter, entering the tomb of Tutankhamen, and Pierre Monet, walking into that of the King of Tanis, could not believe their eyes. In addition to reproducing objects at those famous sites, the book showcases the huge caches of gold found in the pyramids of Meroe, in the grave of Cheops's mother, in Queen Ahotep's tomb, in the graves of princesses of the Middle Kingdom and Early Dynasties, in the Serapeum of Saqqara, and elsewhere. Hans Wolfgang Mller not only describes the excavations but also recounts the adventures of the archaeologists who made such momentous discoveries. Featuring hundreds of spectacular color photographs, Gold of the Pharaohs presents the widest range of ancient Egyptian gold objects and jewels ever assembled in a single volume. As well as depicting the most highly prized possessions of a long-vanished civilization in all their opulence, the book serves as a vivid introduction to the life and culture of ancient Egypt. Tracing the development of style and technique in the creation of gold masterpieces during three thousand years of Egyptian civilization, Mller discusses the function and symbolism of jewelry and the ways in which it was worn. He outlines the steps by which the ancients mined, refined, and transformed gold and precious stones into dazzling works of art. Mller tells of the monopoly over gold enjoyed by the Pharaoh (the "God of Gold") and describes the metal's integral role in Egyptian life and culture. Through his reading of the pic-tures and text on the walls of tombs and temples, Mller offers important insights into the making and uses of gold and jewelry. Among the book's other useful features are a pictorial list of common hieroglyphs and their meanings and a chronological table of the rulers of Egypt. Originally published in Germany in 1998, Gold of the Pharaohs is here available in an elegant and clear English-language version. Everyone who cares about the ancient Egyptians will want to own this magnificent tribute to their craftsmanship and culture.
Customer Reviews:
a real delight.......2000-08-23
This book traces the development of technique and the creation of gold objects and jewels. The author discusses the power, magic and importance of gold to the pharaohs; he presents the objects from the Prehistoric to the Ptolemaic Period; he describes the golden treasures fromTanis, Kush and Tutankhamen's tomb; he also tells of the metal's fundamental role in Ancient Egyptian society. Offering over 400 color photographs by German photographer Eberhard Thiem, it is recommended for all art lovers or historians. This book is a splendid feast for everyone's eyes.
Absolutely Gorgeous!!!.......2000-08-21
I would pick up any book on Egypt, but one filp through it's pages was all I needed. The photos are wonderful and really all you need to know.

Book Description
The quoit brooch style, a decorative style of animal and geometric motifs, is unique to southern England in the fifth century AD, with the greatest concentration of such items occurring in Kent. Suzuki defines the style through an analysis of its design organisation, and, by comparing it with near-contemporary styles in England and on the continent, he identifies those features which make it unique. He argues that the quoit brooch style was made and remade as part of the process of construction of new group identities during the political uncertainties of the time, and sets the development of the style in the context of the socio-cultural dynamics of an emergent post-Roman society. The rigorous archaeological analysis of the style and the study of its historical implications in the light of written sources illuminate the wider issues of social interaction in a period of change, and the formation of cultural identity. SEIICHI SUZUKI did his Ph D in linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin, his MA in medieval studies at the University of York, and he is currently Professor of English and Germanic Studies at Kansai Gaidai University, Japan.
