Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Marbles Illustrated by Robert Block.......2006-07-14

Book is totally disorganized. Beautiful pictures, but no way of researching values. The price list is in the back organized by lot no & auction no. NO reference to the illustration of the marbles in the front of the book, no way to look it up. Starts out promising, then becomes a total jumble. Totally impossible to locate anything. Too time consuming, and then still no resolve.

1 out of 5 stars Great Marble Ilustrations, but try and find the description!.......2000-01-20

This book has fabulous marble illustrations, but absolutely no cross-referencing so a user can look up the description of the marble pictured. The author pre-supposes you are an expert and know what marble maker and type you are looking for. Illustrations are grouped together in one section of the book and each is identified only by the auction number and lot number it came from. Unfortunately, the descriptions of these marbles are not in the same order. Descriptions are ordered by marble manufacturer and type of marble. Even then, the auction numbers within the types are random. The book is only useful if you know what kind of marble you have and want to see what some similar marbles by the same manufacturer sold for. It bogles the imagination to understand why any sensible editor would not cross index this publication, so a person finding a marble they like in the illustrations, can then go read the description. It could take you a week to find the matching description. The sad thing is, that data was readily available to the author and the illustrations could have been keyed in a day! Worst example of editorship I have ever seen! Totally clueless! They never thought about, or cared, how a person might try to use the book. Save your money! I wish I had!

                        Book Description

Thoroughly referenced and generously illustrated, this book discusses all aspects of cycadology. A small group of ancient palmlike seed plants noted for their beautiful foliage and often brightly colored cones and seeds, cycads are believed to have been among the first seed-bearing plants. Seed bearing was the basis for their worldwide dominance from about 300 million years ago to about 70 million years ago, when today's familiar flowering plants gained ascendancy. In recent years, interest in cycads has increased, partly as a result of the need for a more complete identification of the range of toxic and carcinogenic substances these plants produce and partly because of the recognition that some compounds from cycads may prove valuable in biomedical research. Many cycads have recently been identified as endangered species, including some that seem to have survived virtually unchanged since the Mesozoic era. Cycads have a specific importance, now at risk of being lost forever, for the information they offer on the origins and evolution of seed plants. Knut J. Norstog and Trevor J. Nicholls discuss cycad anatomy, reproduction, physiology, and growth. They also focus on population biology and the fossil cycadophytes, as well as genera and species from both the Old World and the New World. The Biology of the Cycads is illustrated with numerous maps, diagrams, and drawings, as well as more than 350 photographs, in black and white and in color.

                        Book Description

Few other plants, with the possible exception of palms, can rival cycads for variety of foliage, size, and form. In spite of such diversity, however, cycads represent an ancient lineage whose fossil history extends over 200 million years. Cycads are tough and durable, not only as survivors but also as ornamental plants of great intrinsic interest. Yet cycads in the wild are all endangered. Whitelock has spent decades studying cycads in their natural habitats around the world and in cultivation. Through his efforts, a well-documented program of propagation has made an increasing variety of cycads available to those who wish to grow and know more about them.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory reference.......2006-11-10

For any novice collector, this book offers a wonderful general knowledgebase of the Cycad family. Whilst not filled with botanical overload as some more in-depth books, it will assist you to identify differences between key plants within a genus.

No reference collection is complete without it.

This book on cycads is very informative without being to technical. It is an outstanding source of information for all who have an interest in cycads. I feel I received value that exceeded the price paid.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Cycad Reference.......2002-05-25

Loran Whitelock has put a lifetime of cycad knowledge and experience in this book. Its excellent photographs give both views of mature plants and close ups of leaf detail that help readers distinguish among similar species. In addition to detailed physical descriptions of all of the recognized cycads and subspecies, Whitelock gives invaluable information on habitat, geographical distribution, conservation status and horticultural characteristics. This book will be the standard reference for cycad gardeners and admirers for many years.

5 out of 5 stars The Cycad "Bible".......2002-05-19

This book will prove invaluable to anyone who has ever brought a single cycad into their garden on impulse and years later found themselves with a small "forest" of these rare and fascinating ornamental plants. Written for all of us, Loren Whitelock has devoted his life to the study and cultivation of these contemporaries of the dinosaurs and the photo section is rich with shots of cycads in their natural habitat. The cultivation and propagation sections are based on years of actual experience growing cycads, but it is in the detailed species descriptions that "The Cycads" excels. Excellent line drawings by Geoff Stein accent many of the pages, but you'll find yourself wishing that there were more. If you garden and you've gotten "hooked" on cycads, this is the book to buy.

                        Book Description

When the first edition of this book was published in 1993, the popularity of cycads in the United States was just beginning to expand beyond public gardens and arboretums in the South. Today, with many species of these tropical plants readily available at local greenhouses and nurseries, cycads have become a favorite of many home gardeners; their palm-like appearance lends a taste of the tropics to any garden.

For this second edition David Jones has added information covering over one hundred new species and subspecies and updated his material on the two hundred species from the first edition. Each entry includes a full description, distribution and habitat information, and a detailed cultivation and propagation guide. The text is easily accessible for the home gardener yet maintains the highest standards of scientific accuracy. Over 360 color photographs plus many other illustrations and maps facilitate easy identification of all living species. Additionally, since cycads truly are living fossils- having existed for at least 250 million years-much information is provided on their prehistory and history.

This second edition of Cycads of the World makes a fine addition to the library of anyone interested in exotic plants, including gardeners, landscape architects, horticulturalists, and botanists.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating journey to plants of yesteryear........2002-07-13

Today's cycads are but relics of a worldwide population that flourished during the Mesozoic Era. Although superficially similar to palms, cycads are not flowering plants, and have a much more primitive structure. Many cycads have become inceasingly rare because of limited habitat and human encroachment. Only in recent years have people become aware of the great aesthetic value of cycads and incorporated them into gardens and lawns as useful, ornamental plants.

This book covers the worldwide variety of cycads in encyclopedic fashion. Beginning with a distribution map, the first half of the book introduces the history of cycads, their conservation and propagation, and their biology, structure, cultivation, and economic importance. Pests and diseases are also addressed.

The second half of the book addresses the different genera and species in turn, with an understandable, easily read text and good photos of each plant in its native state. The discussion covers plants in all areas of the tropics.

Anyone deciding to select a different form, or forms, of cycad cannot let this book go unread. Even if the reader lives in a climate where cycad cultivation is difficult or impossible, the book is an extremely interesting read about plants the dinosaurs lived near every day. Any person with an interest in botany will treasure ths book. I recommend it very highly.

NOTE: I am reviewing the 1993 edition. A revised edition is coming out in August, 2002. I will buy it immediately.

Iy you are a layman, you will certainly ask whether "rock like " items like these can be so pretty. When you read on and understand that nature is actually the artist behind them, then you will start to appreciate that their brilliant color, the pretty pattern as well as the variety of what used to be living trees in this planet millions of years ago are not any less beautiful than the common gems and precious stones which we are much more familiar with. The excellent photos will certainly tempt one to read the book again and again . The only regret is perhaps the lack of more publications on these gems, despite a second and equally attractive book by the same author.

As the various reviews point out this book is a blaze of color. Excellently photographed and excellently printed this volume gives a good impression of how beautiful petrified wood can be. This work is perfectly suited as a coffee table book.

As a wood anatomist I cannot help feeling that an even more beautiful book could be produced by shifting the focus to anatomy: when magnified these woods would look even better. I guess a palaeobotanist would agree with me that this would make for, from a scientific point of view, a more usable and valuable book.

Nevertheless this is a magnificent piece of work: there are some quite stunning pictures in here.

The best photographic presentation of petrified wood I have every seen. Frank Daniels' love of the subject can be seen in his work as laid out between the covers of this superb book. I totally enjoy showing non palaeontologically minded people this book when they visit. If a person is looking for a photographic presentation of petrified wood, then this would have to be the book. I heartily recommend it. Congratulations Frank on a terrific book.

                          Book Description

This volume presents the current state of our knowledge of the classification of the approximately 300 species of cycads. It includes contributions from leading researchers from Australia, China, Italy, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand and the USA. It has been developed from papers presented at
a workshop held in 2002 at the Montgomery Botanical Center. The book provides guidelines for the designation of species, species boundaries and species groupings, thus clarifying what has been a confused area of research.

                                    Book Description

Bar, surface, body, and space are the fundamental elements of the design process. Every form, however complex, may be understood as a variation of them. And underlying every concrete design is a design methodology that can be analyzed, taught, and learned as a transformation of these four categories.

In this sense, Transformation represents a foundational work for architects, designers, and lay people with an interest in cultural history: the unrivaled grammar of design. With a systematic aim and progressively increasing complexity, it unfolds the creative potential of these categories with succinct texts, uniform drawings, and a broad array of examples from architecture, design, and art.

But Transformation also occupies an exceptional position as a physical book: the layout makes it especially easy to compare and combine different design steps, and the separate binding of individual groups of pages makes doing so even easier. The result is a kind of construction set that invites the reader to play as well as research. By generating new “links”, he or she is able to use a limited set of fundamental elements to discover an unlimited and ever-changing array of new design possibilities.
