Great book to show the overview of the cat world. Gives the history, talks about shows, points, and breeds of cats. If you are getting into showing cats this books is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2006-12-28

My family consists of 4 members which includes our baby girl, a 3 and a half year old persian. I have been on a hunt for reading material that best describes the feline nature, behavior, needs and healthcare and I have finally found that in this book. After reading other cat care books I feel this one has a lot of fact not opinion. I would highly recommend this book whether you have a pedigree cat or not.

4 out of 5 stars cat fancier's association complete csat book.......2006-03-09

a very informative book for the cat lover, with bright color pictures, discriptions of temperment , hair color of each cat. a very good book to have on hand.

5 out of 5 stars The Cat Fanciers' Association Complete Cat Book.......2006-03-02

The book is excellent and a good source for reference regarding breeds. I also found the health information section quite informative, and would recommend it to anyone with any kind of cat.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY! The definitive book on pedigreed cats.......2005-03-24

After a disasterous false start with the "Encyclopedia", which was simply an outdated, mediocre European book with the CFA logo sloppily applied to it, the Cat Fanciers' Association's ambitious project to present the world of pedigreed cats to the public is finally here. The sections on the different cat breeds are written by actual experts on the breeds: CFA breed council secretaries. The section on feline health, written by one of the world's foremost "cat breeder vets", Dr. Susan Little, makes this book an indispensible part of any cat lover's library. With so much dated feline health information currently on bookshelves, it is refreshing to see this section reflect the cutting edge of feline medicine. Those with cats of less prestigious heritage than the National Award Winning pedigreed cats pictured in full-color generously throughout the book will find this volume valuable for the section on feline health alone.

Congratulations, CFA, on a job well done!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Evolution of the Bicycle (Vol. 2): A Review.......2007-01-09

The title of the book is somewhat misleading because it does not provide any written history of the bicycle evolution. It merely provides photos of bikes from the 1800s up through the 1970s (with a very few 1980s and 1990s thrown in). The bikes depicted are somewhat intermingled with each other as opposed to depicting them in chronological order. Consequently, there is no index to the book. The photos are very good, however.

4 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Reference Work To Delight Bike Enthusiasts !!.......2000-08-07

This is the 2nd volume in the series. The 8 x 11" softbound book contains 238 pages with 100's of full color, sharp photos. Each item is dated. Pricing is 1994-5. There are numerous old bike ads and picture postcards with large photos. Many bike references and dealers are included. A great reference work you'll enjoy and use.

    Book Description

Cowritten by the author of the award-winning The Tropical Look, An Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms offers a definitive account of palms that may be grown in the garden and landscape. Because palms are often underutilized as a result of their unfamiliarity — even to tropical gardeners — Robert Lee Riffle and Paul Craft have exhaustively documented every genus in the palm family. Approximately 890 species are described in detail, including cold hardiness, water needs, height, and any special requirements. Generously illustrated with more than 900 photos, this volume is as valuable as an identification guide as it is a practical handbook. It even contains photos of several palm species that have never before appeared in a general encyclopedia. Interesting snippets of history, ethnobotany, and biology inform the text and make this a lively catalog of these remarkable plants.

      Book Description

Palms that grow in Canada? Bananas that overwinter in Michigan? How about southern crape myrtles that flower in Birmingham, England, instead of Birmingham, Alabama? Although the voice of authority — and nursery labels — might say, "You can't grow those plants here," author Dave Francko has a different message for gardeners: "Plants can't read the information on their tags." Laced with humorous anecdotes and based on years of first-hand observations and research, this book provides real-world information to help adventurous gardeners grow plants they never before dreamed possible. Nobody who reads this book will ever look at a plant label the same way again.

      5 out of 5 stars great reading!.......2006-08-06

very informative book for gardeners who like to grow plants that are not common to their zone. David has already made all the mistakes, and tells you what really works.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Tropical Gardens in Non-Tropical Regions.......2006-05-05

David Francko has done his research through trial-and-error and has written a great book, listing palms and plants that may grow in your region with a little TLC.

5 out of 5 stars Best Resource For Gardening in Colder Climates.......2006-03-15

Anyone attempting to change their landscaping to something that turns heads when passing by, must purchase Dr. Francko's book, "Palms Won't Grow Here and Other Myths." I run a small business that works with the Trachycarpus Fortunei in Reno, Nv, and this book is my encyclopedia for Cold-Hardy Palms. The book explains the easiest ways to keep fungus, cold winter wind and pests away from your trees so that they look beautiful year-round. The book also gives examples of many species that can be tried in colder climates. Each climate zone is given, so you can easily find what zone you are in, and get planting. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Gardening: From chore to obsession.......2005-08-22

After many visits to southern California, I was tired of envying their plant options so I did some serious internet searches to find tropical plants or those with a tropical feel that will grow in zone 6. I found enough useful information to get started but not enough feel confident. Some gardening tips were contradictory and there were big "how to'" gaps as well. I actually found this book through those searches. It is a great read and I now feel I have the tools create a backyard that I can truly be excited about. I only wish that it spent less space on crepe myrtles and other southeastern plants and more space on hardy tropicals. But he wasn't writing it for me so I'll stick with 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars A book for the avid gardener.......2003-04-28

I have been awaiting a book like this for a long time. This is a must-have book for those who would like to expand their gardening interest and adding some exciting and unusual specimens to their landscape.

This book provides info on trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perrenials that are mostly untried in common landscaping. My favorites are the chapters on hardy palms, bananas, and cannas. But there are a myriad of other species that would hold anyone's interest. This book is valuable for those experimental gardeners in zones 5, 6 and 7.

The author gives valauble advice on the cultivation of each species- including over-wintering tips. The book is practical in its approach to gardening. It is also easily understandable. I even love the section at the end of the book for sources for obtaining plants. The only thing that disappointed me was that I would have loved more color photos of plants.

All in all a great book for the library and a must-have for the subtropical gardener.

      5 out of 5 stars Dave's Book Review.......2004-02-05

This book is well organized. Since I'm just learning about palm trees, I found the palm identification guide especially useful - I used it to easily identify a beautiful Senegal Date Palm in my hometown. The other tables and guides are also helpful. For example, there is a scientific/common name cross reference for all the palms discussed in the book.

The chapter discussing care for your palm trees is good, but I would like to see more specific instructions for a beginner. The main reason I bought the book was that I had just planted a Canary Island Date Palm in my backyard and wanted to care for it properly, since I've killed just about every plant I've ever tried to grow by either over-watering or under-watering. I was hoping for specific information, such as, "Give the tree twenty gallons of water every three days." The instructions given in the book are more general, but if you're already an experienced gardener they're probably sufficient.

This book does provide fairly comprehensive information about the specific palms it covers (about 100), and will help you select palms for your landscape. It also provides enough basic information about palm trees in general that you will have some ability to evaluate palms not specifically covered in the book.

One weakness of the book is that some of the photographs aren't very good, even of some of the most common palm trees. For example, Pygmy Date Palms are very common and very photogenic, but if you judged them by the pictures in this book you'd never realize how spectacular they really are. Also, some of the pictures show trees that are very young, and not developed enough to be distinguishable.

Overall, a great book with lots of useful information.

5 out of 5 stars a necessary guide to anyone who likes palms........2002-07-13

Being a Michigander, I was not familiar with palms other than by appearance. When I took a Florida vacation two years ago, I went to a farm near Miami that exhibited all sorts of tropical crops, and found this excellent book.

Anyone desiring to acquire one or more landscape palms should consult this book as a crucial first step. The first of three sections covers nearly all landscape palms in an encyclopedic fashion, complete with one or more fine color photos of each described species. Each palm is also reviewed in terms of its salt and drought tolerance, soil, nutritional, and light requirements, its appearance and size, its uses, and whether it has irritants to people. Also addressed are the pests the plant may be expected to confront, and how the plant propagates itself.

The second and third sections of the book, although a bit redundant at times, cover much of the foregoing material in general, and also offer more photos. Climate maps and nicknames are also included, as are excellent material for diagnosing illnesses or deficiencies in palms.

Although I am not presently a resident of Florida or any other tropical or subtropical area, I think anyone who lives in such a region, whether it be a professional horticulturalist or a do-it-yourself landscape architect, would be well served by having and reviewing this book frequently. I rate it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pictures and Culture Info........2001-03-03

I use this book constantly. It is full of pictures, which is great if you're trying to see what a particular palm is going to look like once grown and whether it will ultimately fit where you want to place it. It has great info. on culture, care, propagation, habit, etc. A must for every palm nut!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for identifying all types of palms.......2000-03-21

This book was extremely helpfull in identifying the different types of palms. Great pictures, lots of information on where to plant, how to plant, how much water, different types of diseases. I would really recommend this to others.

4 out of 5 stars Ornamental Palm Horticulture.......2006-08-16

A pure technical book, great for the farmers of palms. Everything you want to know about palms but not a palm's identification book. This book have only a few photos.

5 out of 5 stars Ornamental Palm Horticulture (Broschat, Meerow:2000).......2006-06-28

The book was written in attempt to gather scientific literature on palm horticulture together in a single reference text. Broschat and Meerow have done that in a very simple and effective way. This is quite an comprehensive book that tackles the main aspects of palm horticulture from propagation to pests and interior maintenance of palms. Particularly useful are the sections on mineral nutrition and propagation. The different chapters of the book are well-complemented by over 100 illustrations which give you a better idea which disease or deficiency might affect your palm.

I have read the book in less than two days and I was able to immediately diagnostic nutrional deficiencies with my Spindle, Christmas and Phoenix palms. This book is not intended to describe how to grow a specific palm. Rather, it teaches general principles to grow and maintain healthy palms. This is the most complete and useful book on palms I have read so far. Every serious palm amateur should have one at home.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Comprehensive Treatise.......2004-08-15

Brimming with detailed, useful information on all aspects of palm horticulture.

2 out of 5 stars Limited cultural information.......2004-05-28

This book is an attempt to guide those interested in palm horticulture. However, finding that palm horticulture varies widely between the species, I found this title a disappointment. Some palms can't take iron for instance, but the authors neglect to give specific information on those species which would be helpful. The same applies to those palms that need iron. As a general guide, the book is ok, but if you really need to know how to care for your exotic and rare palms you may need advice from the local botanical garden or a nursery that specializes in growing palms to determine the nutritional requirements of a specific genus.

5 out of 5 stars Correcting misunderstandings about this book.......2001-10-05

The authors clearly had no intention in writing yet another book filled with photos of palm species that would instruct readers on what palms to plant. There are already many books that provide the service that two of these reviewers ask for ("Betrock's Landscape Palms," "Betrock's Cold Hardy Palms," "Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms") that give detailed horticultural information on palm species. The intent of this book is made very clear in the introduction: this a book on how to deal with palms horticulturally, not a guide on which palms to choose in a landscape.

Up to three color photos illustrate each tree, including close-ups of flowers, bark, fruit and leaves. An easy-to-use color chart shows which trees are in bloom each month of the year. All the trees were photographed in garden settings, with over 500 gorgeous color photos by Don Walker, founder of the San Diego Horticultural Society. The text is by horticulturist Steve Brigham, owner of Buena Creek Gardens. This important and lavishly-illustrated book is published by the San Diego Horticultural Society.

5 out of 5 stars Indeed, "friendly and informative"!.......2007-02-09

I love the fact that I can drive locally and see a tree of interest in its mature growth phase. It helps me visualize how it might look in my yard. I wanted to replace three mediocre shrubs that were side by side. My typical approach to plant selection had been a knee jerk reaction to something I saw in a home and garden magazine that looked pretty, irrespective if it really would grow in my area. By using the color charts in the back of this book, I looked for trees that met my needs for height, width, and color of bloom. I made six choices and took the list to a local nursery. I got my first three choices and am more than pleased with the outcome of the mature growth. With the help of this book, for once, I made plant selections with an intelligent approach for the present and future.
