5 out of 5 stars Eleven years and still memorable!.......2006-12-22

My fourth grade teacher read this book to the entire class eleven years ago. I still remember the title and how much I loved listening about a caring woman and her unexpected friend. There wasn't a single student in the class that didn't enjoy this book. If you're looking for a heartwarming tale of friendship with a very original plot, look no further.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and Educational Tale.......2006-09-06

This is the tale of how Amanda Lollar first rescued a bat found on the sidewalk outside of her furniture business. It's a journey that starts with this first rescue and continues to this very day. Amanda Lollar went on to found an orginazation called Bat World Sanctuary and to become one of the foremost bat rehabilitation experts in the world. Quite an accomplishment, and this tale of how it all started is a great read!

5 out of 5 stars You Don't Know Beans About Bats Until You've Read This Book.......2002-11-26

This little book revealed the true personalities and capabilities of one of the most misunderstood mammals on earth. I used to think bats were cute, like mice with wings, until I read The Bat In My Pocket several years ago. The author helps people understand that bats are gentle, intelligent, long-lived and highly beneficial, by telling the tale of the injured bat she rescued and befriended one summer day. The little bat, Sunshine, captured Amanda Lollar's heart and will do the same to yours.

5 out of 5 stars Amanda is a Great Ambassador for Bats!.......2000-07-05

This book really makes a person realize that bats -- for all the bad publicity and myths around them -- are really wonderful creatures with distinct personalities and a lot to offer. Amanda writes a warm story with great detail about bat behavior and her own personal growth. I like that she doesn't sugarcoat the problems she had and that it is apparent keeping bats (and all wildlife, really) is not only unwise (and probably illegal) for the normal person but a difficult and challenging task. If everyone read this book, there would be a lot better understanding of the important role bats play in the environment and why they should be appreciated rather than feared.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent story of an extraordinary relationship!.......1998-12-02

I have met Amanda and now consider her a friend. After reading her book, it made me realize how wonderful Amanda is, and inspired me to begin learning even more about bats. In this endeavor, I have began working as a wildlife rescuer and am learning the joys and heartaches of the rehabilitation of these wonderful, gentle, benevolent creatures God has gifted us with. I recommend this book to every teacher, parent, wildlife enthusiast, scout leader, youth minister, or anyone else who has the ability to change the stereotypical image that bats have!!!!

4 out of 5 stars An Ace for Ackerman.......2005-12-20

I was assigned to read this novel for an English class and was not excited to dive into a scienc book. But the depth of Ackerman's poetic words creates had changed my thought. The Moon by Whale Light not only capivates the reader's thoughts of the endless beauty of the natural world but also inhances our appreication of well-written literature. Needless to say I will be asking for another of Ackerman's poetry books for under the Christmas tree.

4 out of 5 stars intriguing.......2005-11-10

Naturalist-writer Diane Ackerman writes passionately about several animals and their habitats in this collection of nature essays. In sensuous prose she captures the experiences of whale watching, alligator sexing, bat investigating, and visiting Antarctica to view penguins in the wild. Ackerman gets up close and personal with these intriguing creatures, using poetic prose to describe their habitats, habits and appearance. Not only do the animals come alive, so too do the naturalists and various people she meets in her travels.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2004-02-22

I think this was the first book by a naturalist that I ever read (and it was many years ago that I first read this book) that was utterly enchanting and engaging. Most books of this nature are didactic with occasional leaps into literary writing. Ackerman, in contrast, balances fact with fancy and reality with conjecture; she balances personal experience with the universal; she asks original questions that have no known answers; she merges conversation with conservation; she gives us a sense of who she is without losing the thread of what she's writing about. Not being particular scientific, I was surprised to find myself clinging to every word, reading the book straight through in perhaps two nights of bedtime reading.
The chapters on diverse topics can be read separately as individual essays, but there's a sense of progression of Ackerman's life that lends a personal touch to the book. These wonderful essays found their first home in The New Yorker. Subjects are all over the map: bats, alligators, penguins, and of course the whales of the title, which reads like a misprint - but isn't. In the process, Ackerman underscores man's responsibility to act in the protection of the world's other creatures: we are but one among many (and we're hugely outnumbered, BTW).
Besides being a perfect melding of animal lore, objective study, and conservation, The Moon by Whalelight is an example of nonfiction storytelling at its best.

3 out of 5 stars Nature writer vs. naturalist who writes.......2001-11-20

Basically, as stories about animals we don't have much contact
with, this is a pretty good book. As science, well... Two sentences that floored me read, "How could anything that heavy float? But doesn't the moon float?" Uh, Ms. Ackerman, the moon is outside the earth's gravitational pull and ships float. What exactly was your point?

5 out of 5 stars The Light is Clear.......2001-10-29

Here is an author I would like to call and thank. Not only is she articulate, poetic and interesting, but her fascination with and love for her subjects shines in every essay she writes.

Here is the very special world of a woman who sees with the clarity of a scientist and writes with the perception of a poet. Moreover, she writes from her own experiences hanging out in front of bat caves, tackling 500 pound alligators and cuddling baby penguins in refrigerated nurseries. Nothing stops her and not much phases her, but a lot of what she sees and experiences makes her stop and think. It is the thinking that attracts me as much as her stories. She is hard at work on her own vision of the world and the place human beings occupy in it. It is a vision worth considering.

Expect to be drawn with lyrical, insightful writing into the worlds of the creatures Ackerman studies, but expect to find yourself looking down the throat of some tough questions as well. I always come away from one of her books with some new thoughts to chew on. This book shouldn't be missed.

      Book Description

Since antiquity, bats have been misunderstood and shrouded in mystery. Given misnomers such as fledermaus ("flying mouse") and murciegalo ("blind mouse"), these nocturnal flying mammals were even classified as primates by the great Carl Linnaeus, based on his knowledge of the anatomy of large Old World fruit bats. In this beautifully illustrated volume, bat specialist Rick A. Adams delves into bats' true nature and the roles these fascinating ledurblaka ("leather flutterers") play in the natural history and ecology of the Rocky Mountain West.

Bats of the Rocky Mountain West begins with a general discussion of bat biology and evolution as well as regional physiography and zoogeography. In addition, Adams describes—based on the results of extensive research—the behavior and ecology of the 31 species of bats found in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. Naturalists and biologists alike will benefit from the detailed species descriptions, color photographs and illustrations, distribution maps, and echolocation sonograms. Bats of the Rocky Mountain West is a unique and valuable reference for professional bat biologists, naturalists, and wildlife enthusiasts interested in the conservation and ecology of bats in the region.

        Book Description

Long-Eared Bats examines the biology, ecology and behavior of two European bat species which are distinctive, easily recognized, and familiar to most naturalists. These friendly bats live in close proximity tohumans and are examples of evolutionary diversity. This book gives a comprehensive review of Plecotus auritus and Plecotus austriacus and investigates their behavior and considers the full range of conservation issues relating to the species.Topics include identifying the species, foraging, reproductive biology, social organization, and the effects of man-made alterations to the environment and proposed conservation methods.

The brown and grey long-eared bats are among the best-known European bat species and are familiar to most naturalists. In Britain, the brown long-eared bat is probably the second most common bat after the Pipistrelle. They are attractive creatures which favor man-made buildings as roost sites, adding to their familiarity with humans. Bats vary in their ecology, each showing special features and behaviors that suit them to particular habitats and food supplies. The complex social systems of bats influence their choice of roost and breeding sites and have implications for their conservation as the availability of such places becomes crucial to their future.

A good book for folks wanting to learn about our night-time visitors. Well worth buying.

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2003-07-31

I bought this book just because I was curious about bats. I had always thought they were "bad", until I visited a conservatory in Wyoming that had a bat house and explained how important they are. That was a surprise to me.
This book opened my eyes to how beneficial bats really are. It talks about the facts, myths and misconceptions about bats... what's true, what's not. It tells what to do if a bat comes into your house, and how to evict them if they have taken up residence in your attic or somewhere else you don't want them to be.
The book is well-written and an "easy" read. It has lots of good photos, and tells about some of the different species of bats and where they live. I recommend it for older children (maybe 10 and up) and adults. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Merlin Tuttle: America's Neighborhood Bats.......2002-10-05

This is a very informative, well wriiten and beautifully photographed book on bats. The book includes beautiful color photographs of the most commonly seen bats in America. One of the most appreciated sections is the "Beginners' Key To American Bats", a well written, easy to comprehend section on identifying common bats of the region and placing them in their proper groups. Very important if you intend to build bat houses and hope to attract occupants and just general knowledge.
The book includes several other interesting chapters besides identification. It shows how bats navigate with radar. It addresses the many negative myths of bats, it explains how beneficial bats are in nature. If you want or need to know anything at all about these interesting creatures, THIS is the book and Merlin Tuttle is the expert to seek out. And even if you only need to know enough about bats to humanely evict them from your belfry, this book comes with even that information!
The author has dedicated his life to these interesting mammals. Even without knowing that fact, you can see from the entertaining way Mr Tuttle writes, how much he cares. All of his books are excellent. Check them all out!

        5 out of 5 stars A great, informative book.......1998-10-09

Dr. Tuttle has set out to redeem the reputation of the bat clan and if people would just read this book I believe he would succeed. This book is packed with information that will help dispel the fear and misunderstanding with which people view bats, but at the same time it is by no means too technical to be readily understood (I first read it when I was about fourteen iirc and enjoyed it as much then as I do now.) I would recommend this book to anyone anywhere who is the least bit interested in nature and also to anyone who is fearful or concerned about bats in their nieghborhood.

                5 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFULLY RENDERED VOLUME.......2005-06-02

As The Dowager Marchioness of Salisbury writes in her comprehensive Introduction, "In recorded time, the story of the gardens at Hatfield begins in the early years of the seventeenth century, but my imagination plays with the idea that the tale could have begun forty years earlier, with the seeds of their creation being sown in the mind of a young boy......" She presents much more than a chronicle of recreation in her introduction; she also offers an intriguing story.

The Dowager Marchioness is an expert guide as she lived at Hatfield House until 2004 where she planned and oversaw the recreation of this incomparably beautiful garden covering some 45 acres of the 7000 acre estate. Described by one as the greatest British gardener of the twentieth century, she takes readers on aan all-encompassing tour of this remarkable garden as her vision for it is fulfilled.

Photographer Sue Snell, an acclaimed documentary and horticultural photographer, is an astute recorder as she follows the garden's progress over a period of eight years in all seasons. Some 250 color photographs superbly illustrate the 144 page text.

A double page plan of the garden gives readers an overview of the terrain as well as an appreciation for the scope of this undertaking. The volume is divided into four sections, the North, which includes approaches and the North Court. We find the Old Palace in the West section as well as the Lime Walk and the lovely Holly Walk and the Wilderness.

The Mount Garden, found in the South section, is breathtaking. Finally, the East section features a grand Orchard, delectable Kitchen Garden, and what estate is complete without a Vineyard?

Not only garden lovers but all will enjoy and treasure this beautifully rendered volume.

                            Book Description

This bibliography offers a new and indispensable tool for both researchers and practitioners in the field of Islamic law. It supplements the bibliographies published by Joseph Schacht (1964) and John Makdisi (1987) and includes some 1,600 Western-language publications which have appeared between 1980 and 1993. It contains a general and a regional section. With regard to the latter, the main focus is on the Middle East (including Afghanistan and North Africa), although publications in South and Southeast Asia have also been included. In order to facilitate its use, an authors' index and a subject index have been added.
