Decent for youth and under-educated, but..........2003-12-30
A fine try and the book does have a good deal of specific information but the detail is in all the wrong places to be of much interest to me.
Better to buy THE AFRICAN GREY PARROT HANDBOOK, or KEEPING AFRICAN GREY PARROTS.
WOW! I love this book!.......2001-06-21
The greatest advice in the entire world. Like, this book opened my eyes and made me think just like the bird does. Yeah, that's it! That's the ticket! I can speak African Grey now, because I read this wonderful book. Did I mention I am selling this book? Oy, chock full of information and history and will make you suicidal ... er I mean an expert!
Now days, anybody can call themselves an "Expert".......2001-06-08
She gives tips in her book, then on the next page the tip goes against what she just said on the last page! For instance: Don't buy a galvanized cage for fear of poisoning. Next page tells you to let it play with a nut and bolt. HELLO! Galvanized! One page says they are creatures of routine and let it get one. The next page says don't let it get into routine. Now days anybody can get published. THe book is more about her bird who she loves so much but is nutz. Her bird is crazy, bottom line. If you buy this book, keep it in the bathroom :) Just ... incase.
Good for a story and that's it.!.......2000-05-20

Siberia became part of Russia largely as a result of the Stroganoffs' expeditions eastward in pursuit of land and mineral wealth, activities that made them the richest family in Russia. In the 18th century, they focused their energies on amassing art objects; Catherine the Great herself was jealous of their artistic forays. They collected ancient Roman sculpture, French and Italian oil paintings, and fine furniture and textiles, and developed a school of icon painting. When exquisite Sassanian silverware was unearthed on their estates, they ensured that this too was brought to grace their stately palaces. Stroganoff: The Palace and Collections of a Russian Noble Family catalogs the objects that the Portland Art Museum tracked down for an unusually wide-ranging exhibition. A vast bowl of green malachite from the Urals mounted on a gold tripod, obtained ultimately only through blackmail by the museum's director, is the show's pièce de résistance. Paintings and plans of the Stroganoffs' opulent cathedrals, palaces, and dachas are included and form a backdrop for the objects. The family residence on Nevsky Prospect in St. Petersburg was designed by the influential architect Voronikhin, a freed serf who is believed to have been Alexander Stroganoff's natural son. After decades of neglect, this palace is now being refurbished and the Stroganoff possessions are being rehabilitated by the Hermitage and State Russian Museums, a recognition of the Stroganoffs' vital involvement in Russia's expansion over 500 years. A conscious attempt to reestablish a sense of the continuum of Russian art and history after the disruptions of the last century, Stroganoff is an imaginative and resounding success. --John StevensonBook Description
The Stroganoffs were among Imperial Russia's wealthiest and most influential families. Their collection of art, antiquities, and decorative objects, assembled over five centuries, was rivaled only by the holdings of the tsar. This book, the companion volume to a major traveling exhibition, reassembles masterworks of the Stroganoff collection for the first time since the 1917 Revolution. The more than 200 objects showcased here are extraordinarily varied: exquisite 16th-century icons; European old-master paintings by Botticelli, Poussin, van Dyck, and Watteau; rare antiquities from around the world; and stunning decorative objects, such as the great malachite coupe from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
Complete with photographs of that fabled Baroque palace, which is now under restoration, this book will be a revelation to art lovers everywhere.

Jewish Law in Gentile Churches: Halakhah and the Beginning of Christian Public Ethics
Markus Bockmuehl Manufacturer: Baker Academic ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0801027586 Release Date: 2003-11-01 |
Book Description
Why did the early Christian church, with its many Gentile members, keep Old Testament commandments about sex and idolatry but disregard many others, like those about food or ritual purity? Did Christianity inherit its norms of moral reasoning from Judaism or invent them afresh? In Jewish Law in Gentile Churches, Markus Bockmuehl approaches such questions by examining the halakhic (Jewish legal) rationale behind the ethics of Jesus, Paul, and the early Christians. Bockmuehl offers an alternative to the prevailing attitude that ''law-free'' Christianity arose in response to Jewish ''legalism.'' Drawing heavily upon primary sources, he suggests that early Christian ethics were more solidly based in Jewish legal teaching than has generally been thought. This important study has far-reaching implications not only for the study of the New Testament, but more broadly for the relationship between Christianity and Judaism. First published by T & ; T Clark, Jewish Law in Gentile Churches is now available to a North American audience in this affordable paperback edition.Customer Reviews:

Democracy and the Halakhah
Eliezer Schweid Manufacturer: University Press of America ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0819193607 |
Book Description
Eliezer Schweid in "Democracy and the Halakhah" analyzes the writings of Rabbi Haim Hirschensohn, one of the early Hebrew cultural pioneers who laid the foundation for the Zionist enterprise. Born in Safed Eretz Israel in 1857, Hirschensohn was pushed out of the fanatic Ashkenazi religious community and ended up as an Orthodox rabbi in Hoboken, New Jersey. His writings focus on finding a philosophic basis that could reconcile the Torah with the transformation forced upon the Jewish people by modernity so as to come out with a coherent systematic system of political thought that could encompass both. Co-published with the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.

Jewish Traditional Law Embraces Environmentalism.......2004-03-11
Human welfare is always at the core of the discussion, but the term has very different meanings for those who are well-off and those who are hungry. Shall food production, cheap transportation, and basic housing take priority over a declining infant mortality rate, longer life expectancy, and better medical care?
These questions have not been raised in a significant manner till the last half century. Some concerns were always expressed, but in a very limited and localized fashion. As major portions of the world remained unexplored, and relatively untouched by modern developments there was no need to deal with these issues till the latter part of the nineteenth century. Such questions are endless, and we know that the answers will determine the quality of life for future generations. As we seek answers, we naturally turn to our religious heritages. Each tradition has been asked the same questions by its adherents, and each faces some-what the same predicament.
Judaism has been no different from the other world religions. Our tradition dealt with small segments of these issues, but they were secondary or even peripheral to earlier generations. Although there is some isolated appreciation of the natural world and concern for it in the midrashic literature, the halakhic tradition has even less. As this latter tradition depends largely on questions asked, in other words on real-life situations rather than on speculation, little material is available as no one raised the issues or asked the questions.
This means that modern Judaism must build on a slim foundation of the few issues that have been raised and then look at the underlying principles to see what guidance may be given. This requires a major effort and new approaches. It may also require an entirely new and different outlook upon the natural world from what we followed in the past.
The essays in this volume seek to make a beginning in this direction. They wish to go beyond the hortatory rather vague approaches of others who have written about Judaism and the environment. We need an underlying philosophy and a halakhic approach that will develop into detailed guidance. Discussions on these issues is vital as questions on these matters continue to be raised with increasing urgency.

Evolving Halakhah: A Progressive Approach to Traditional Jewish Law
Moshe Zemer Manufacturer: Jewish Lights Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1580230024 |
Book Description
Innovative and provocative, Evolving Halakhah affirms the system of traditional Jewish law, halakhah, as a developing and moral structure, flexible enough to accommodate the changing realities of each generation. In this accessible analysis of halakhah, Moshe Zemer issues a clarion call to follow the ancient and modern principles of evolving halakhah, which demands ethical deeds, the discovery of holiness in the Commandments, a critical approach to the Tradition, and responsibility of the entire Community of Israel. These principles are viewed as the framework in which the other commandments are applied. To Jews who sometimes see no choices but those of fundamentalist rigidity on the one hand, or total rejection of tradition on the other, Zemer argues instead for awareness of the inherent flexibility of the halakhic system. Halakhah, he argues, has had many voices, and has changed to meet every generation's needs. Equipped with this view, liberal Jews can reclaim their tradition from a conservative rabbinic establishment that all too often--especially in Israel--has seen the voice of strictness as more authentic than the voice of lovingkindness. The product of Zemer's thirty-five years of work in the Israel Movement of Progressive Judaism, Evolving Halakhah includes chapters on matters ranging from personal status, especially marriage and conversion, through the "political" halakhah of a response to the intifada. It shows that the traditional framework for understanding the Torah's commandments can be the living heart of Jewish life for all Jews--including Reform, Reconstructionist, Conservative, and Modern Orthodox. An essential reference work for any thinking student of religion.

"Evolving Liberal Jewish Law".......2002-12-08
However, the problem this writer sees with the work, is the nature of the author is up against. Solomon Freehof, the pioneering American Reform Halachist, compiled a series of Reform Responsa or letters of commentary on Jewish legal issues over the nearly five decades he was active in this field, and so has his successor, Rabbi Walter Jacobs. However, Freehof's vast compendium of published work is not once alluded by Zemer, and only 2 of his responsa are noted in the entire book, while the volumes Jacobs compiled are nowhere noted.
Further, the principle notion of Reform has always been accommodation to modernity, but the limits of that accommodation have never really been clearly articulated. From the earliest days of reform in Germany 200 years ago, convenience has played a large role in determining the Reform outlook, which is why for example the Reform movement has issued 4 major `platform statements' on theology and Jewish Practice in the last 130 years.
Zemer's biggest problem though is twofold: the ignorance of his Reform laity on the one hand, and the deeply embedded charisma of a clear, and charismatic Orthodox worldview on the other. Of his 11 proposed principles to govern halachic change, only one reminds the worshipper of God or would provide even the slightest incentive to practice, which is the inherent holiness of the mitzvoth. In the Orthodox realm, they have 13 principles of halachic change, fist articulated in the Talmud 1500 years ago, and part of the daily prayer service every day to this day.
This writer would say therefore, that while Zemer's book is an outstanding pioneering effort, it bites off more than it can chew, essentially arguing it's principles without an adequate philosophic grounding. However, while the grounding of this work is week, that doesn't mean none exists; merely that it must come from another quarter. In "Jewish History and Divine Providence(available here on Amazon.com)," I supply the rationale missing from Zemer's text: namely an argument which examines the relationship between Jewish law, Jewish history and it's actual practice, shows how the mitzvoth have actual effect in the real world, and how Jewish practice or the lack of it has influenced modern Jewish history.
With "Jewish History and Divine Providence" and "Evolving Halachah," the reader will have a complete praxis of liberal Judaism, one by which to live and practice, not avoid.

Jesus & Purity Halakhah: Was Jesus Indifferent to Impurity (Conciectanea Biblica New Testament Series, 38)
Thomas Kazen Manufacturer: Almquiest & Wiksell Intl ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 9122019642 |
Book Description
At the end of the Second Temple period, ritual purity came to play an increasing role in Jewish society. Purity laws were interpreted and expanded, and sources of impurity were generally avoided by many. Signs of that development are discussed in this study and put forward as arguments for an expansionist trend, gaining in influence and support from the common people. Jesus' attitude to impurity is traced against this historical background. The (in)famous history of historical Jesus-research necessitates a conscious choice of method. The traditional focus on sayings material and criteria of authenticity is modified; narrative traditions with implicit purity issues are appealed to, and extra-canonical traditions are included. The main areas examined are the most important "fathers" of impurity: "leprosy" (skin diseases), genital discharges and corpse-contamination. Jesus is found to have acted in ways easily understood as indifference to these types of impurity. His behavior is shown on several points to clash with current purity halakhah and dominant expansionist ideals. In an attempt to interpret his actions within the Jewish context and culture of the Second Temple period, three explanatory models are provided. Jesus' attitude is seen as part of a moral trajectory in Judaism. It is understood as a response to a regional, Galilean dilemma. It is viewed in a power perspective as an expression of Jesus' eschatological struggle against demonic evil. The result is that Jesus may be understood as operating within the purity paradigm of his time, yet pushing it to the breaking point, at least in the eyes of some. Such a reconstruction makes subsequent developments intelligible, in which various Christian currents drew conflicting conclusions. The function and effect of purity laws change with time, however. While they are irrelevant to most modern people, those looking to Jesus' behavior for some sort of guidance may find contemporary analogies.

Book Description
Unlike contemporary culture, Rabbinic Judaism's authoritative documents set forth the entire structure of belief and system of behavior in two distinct modes of discourse, Halakhic and Aggadic, or broadly construed, statements of law and lore. Theology in Action shows how the Talmud of Babylonia (a.k.a., the Bavli) account of normative action sets forth in a dual discourse the single, coherent theology of Rabbinic Judaism.Books:
