Customer Reviews:
I loved this book.......2007-01-18
This book was a great read. It wasn't just about animals but also the author. Recommended.
pure pleasure.......2006-02-17
I ordered these two copies of "Tales From the Bark Side" as gifts for friends who are dog lovers, as am I. I so thoroughly enjoyed the book that I just HAD to share it!! As I said in the title--PURE PLEASURE. The book has great humor, and very moving poignancy--I can't wait to read it again--just as soon as our new puppy lets me sit down for more than five minutes!
A Great Book of Stories.......2003-08-06
I absolutely LOVE "Tails From the Barkside"! I first heard about it on GreatPets.com, bought the book, and have read it several times since then. Tails is a wonderful collection of stories from the real life training experiences of Kilcommons and Wilson. A must read!
Lovely addition to your collection on dog stories........2003-07-26
These stories are great insights into dogs and their personalities. I admit, James Herriot is still my favorite author when it comes to telling a tale. Looking beyond the lack of narrative richness, it's still a great, easy read. I finished this book in two days. It was funny, heart-wrenching, educational, and highly entertaining.
Great Tails!.......2003-05-29
Tails From the Bark Side, by Sarah Wilson and Brian Kilcommons is a great look at the human animal bond, especially the funny parts! Tails from the Bark Side has laugh out loud funny stories of dogs and humans and the funny quirks about both. I rate this book among the top dog stories I've ever read. ...

Customer Reviews:
Nice but too little letters !.......2002-02-24
A really nice guide plenty of little letters... you'll need a magnifying glass to read it !
not an all star.......2002-01-12
Not a practical guide in this collecting age. Does NOT have a comprehensive list; meaning it does NOT cover all manufacturers and, more importantly, for the ones it does, only provides listings of the base set. That means no insert or variation pricing whatsoever. Also, no oddball or minor league issues are listed. Generally speaking, unless you are collecting base sets prior to the advent of inserts and alternate versions of the base set, this guide is fairly useless.
This book is an awsome book to look cards in.......2001-11-19
The beckett book was a great sorce to me because I have been collecting baseball cards sence I was 3 yr old and because I have over 7,000 cards so I think this book will be a good sorce for you to.
The Most Popular Baseball Card Price Guide In The World.......2001-09-01
To begin with, no other baseball card price guide even comes close to the number of sales as Beckett. Literally, the world over, Beckett is used by more people than in other guide on the market. This fine publication also has monthly guides covering baseball, basketball, football, and hockey. Beckett does extensive research on the hobby and sends analysts all over the world to keep track on what's happening in the baseball card market. Dr. James Beckett is an expert in the field of baseball card collecting and in this book gives readers valuable tips on how to preserve, store, and grade cards as well as lists in detail some of the most popular and sought after cards ever produced. With all the cards on the market, it is almost impossible to list them all in one book, so Beckett lists the ones that show the most interest to the general public. Now if you are into collecting rarities, you'll really want this price guide since Beckett lists some of the most rarest cards ever made. Many sets and singles alike are listed along with values on most all of them. Believe it or not, but, there are some cards on the market today that are so rare, a clear value cannot be placed on them, they are literally priceless. These include the very popular ONE OF ONES. These are cards where only one of each card in a set is produced.
If you are looking for a guide that has the most up-to-date information, the most listings and the most reliability, you can't beat Beckett. Please note this: If you go to Beckett or any other guide and cannot find a value for your card or cards, dont think for a moment that what you have is worthless. Like I stated earlier, with so many cards on the market today it is almost impossible to list them all, plus, some cards are produced that are so rare that NO ONE in the hobby may know about them until years later. For example, in 1990 Topps produced its regular baseball set including a Frank Thomas rookie. What no one knew was that there was also a very rare error card of Mr. Thomas produced. For years it was not even given a value, then finally the error card was listed with only a small value. Time passed and the card held that estimated value until it began a month by month rapid surge upward. As of August 2001, that same card is worth well over 500.00
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to find out what certain cards are worth or who would like to learn about some of the history of the baseball card market.

Ready, set... grow!.......2000-06-28
You don't have to be a gardener to appreciate Rosalind's latest book. She takes you by the hand as she describes the vegetable gardens and produce markets she visited in Italy. BTW, you won't need to fly out of the country to see one of the most spectacular gardens, The Sebastiani Winery gardens in Sonoma Valley (California). Want to start a garden? Choose the veggies from the Italian Garden Encyclopedia and use the rare seed sources listed in the back of the book. Want to start cooking right away? Thumb through the recipes for inspiration. New to gardening altogether? Read the author's sage advice on planting, maintenance and pest control. I particularly recommend this book to the struggling dieter as it will give you a new appreciation for vegetables and a great workout in the garden!

Customer Reviews:
Think about this........2000-10-29
Ken Cato is the premiere identity design firm/designer in Australia. His book proposes that contemporary graphic design identiy programs are not sufficient, so he created the term "broader visual language." This moniker states that an identity is not a single visual statement, but rather a kind of "gestalt" based on a number of elements that are visually related to one another.
Although some graphic designers might still yearn for the simple conceptual and witty work produced by the likes of Pentagram, GeorgeTscherny, The Partners, et al., the book shows a number of colorful examples and case studies and the work is quite beautiful and refreshing.

Amazon.com
In this thoughtful book, usability expert John Cato outlines a design process that has a Web site visitor's needs in mind. He offers both theoretical discussions and real-world case studies. Although the illustrations in this compact book are small and not always well printed, the insightful advice is clearly communicated and is valuable to anyone setting out on the open sea of Web development. And, with its analyses of various corporate Web sites (including this one at Amazon.com), User-Centered Web Design addresses particularly important issues for those involved with e-business. This is neither a software how-to book nor a showcase of what's cutting-edge on the Web today. But it does inspire the sort of careful thinking found in Don Norman's The Psychology of Everyday Things.
Throughout the book, Cato offers diagrams, paradigms, and to-do lists, the first being his looping description of one's relation to the world: Awareness - Understanding - Action. His model for designing is Discover - Design - Use. Discovery includes the vision, exploration, "the 'Ah ha' moment." Design is where it is all born, and Use involves market testing and verification. These are just a few of the theoretical game plans he offers. Cato uses case studies to show how one can make user profiles contribute to the design process. It feels very similar to learning good marketing skills in business school.
The book also takes a careful look at visual techniques used on many sites today, breaking down what works and what doesn't, even proposing alternatives. For example, is the user confused over whether something is a button? Cato writes, "Make it buttony, and employ mouseovers to give confirmatory feedback," and "Go for creative ways of grabbing attention; they do not have to be large things."
You'll also learn how to push your creativity, get over your fears, and believe in yourself (good all-around life advice). There's even a section that looks at design issues for Web-enabled cell phones. This book won't wow you with its visuals, but the ideas and inspiration within may help you wow others with your Web design. --Angelynn Grant
Customer Reviews:
WAY overdone.......2003-06-12
This book is an overcomplicated and useless study of the obvious. The author basically tries to apply structured development and database design theory to web design.
Anyone can create and I/O diagram or flowchart. Basically, anyone who knows structured programminging would gain absolutely nothing from this book. Anyone who doesn't know the design process, will only become confused an frustrated.
The author unsuccessfully tries to simplify the prototyping process, and never explains it either. Basically, he teaches that web design is a monotanous process that must be done over and over again until it comes out right.
Any Analysis and Design book would teach someone a great deal more than this book. The author tries to reinvent the wheel by creating a square.
This is certainly a poor book indeed.
Practical, but based in good theory.......2002-06-07
Some may consider that user evaluation is a "luxury" - but you may do well to consider the cost of NOT incorporating any user evaluation/involvement. Well documented examples of commercial websites that have failed are legion, often because the "designers" simply designed for themselves or their clients, ignoring their target audience.
This book offers practical advice that enables web designers to satisfy the people that really matter - the users. It is a very good example of academic research translated into everyday practice.
Not for the real world!.......2002-02-21
This book offers several academic methods for setting goals and measuring the success of those goals based on user evaluation. This is fine if your clients are willing to pay up to 5 times the cost of a less stringent design process. The problem with this book's guidelines is that they seem to be based in a world of fantasy where everyone has 30 hour days they can devote to working on the pre-design analysis of a site. While this would be ideal, it is far from realistic.
Overall I found this book to be full of nice ideas but lacking in real world application. If you want a guide to designing user-centered web sites for clients with unlimited budgets and patience, then this is your book. However, most of us live in a world with more constraints and less freedom than what these ideas would require.
A "user friendly' and practical guide.......2001-08-11
A "user friendly' and practical guide to designing or transforming personal or professional interactive websites, John Cato's User-Centered Web Design specifically focuses on designing for the end-user. A concise, readable text presents a comprehensive overview, practical advice, proven methodology, ideas and advice for insuring that final web designs meet the needs of both the client and the end-user. Strongly recommended for the novice web designer, User-Centered Web Design will also prove an invaluable reference for even the more experienced web master in tweaking websites for maximum effectiveness and ease of use by site visitors.
Usable book for user centered design.......2001-08-06
This book by John Cato offers a great set of examples on how to move the the process of user-centered development for websites. The book is filled with examples that help developers, designers, and managers get a grasp of the steps, thought process, interaction with users, process, and documentation that is greatly helpful in building a product the intended audience uses. Cato includes helpful lists, advice, and points out common problems along with instruction for correcting them.
