5 out of 5 stars Don't be a newt know-nothing!.......2000-04-04

This book is ideal for the salamander or newt neophyte-anyone who is just starting to keep these slimy but endearing critters as pets. Written by an author with dozens of pet books to his name, and published by T.F.H. Publications, one of the world's largest publishers of pet books, this slim volume covers all major topics that the would-be salamander and newt owner needs to know. It discusses the natural history of newts and salamanders, specifics on how to house them safely, what they eat and how and where to find or buy it, hygiene and health issues, reproduction, and more. The book also includes color photographs of a variety of salamanders and newts from around the world, including all major families and species found in the United States. Some of the photographs are startling; picture a tiger salamander eating a field mouse, for example. The book also includes several pages about the axolotl, a formerly exotic species that has become one of the most popular amphibian pets. This book is a great buy for the price, and is perfectly adequate for the beginner, although it may not do for the serious salamander breeder. Pick up this inexpensive volume before you even THINK about picking up that spotted thing that's crawling around under the log.

Book Description

Heads up, collectors and enthusiasts! Rhyn Noll has put together a detailed look at the evolution of skateboarding that starts in the early twentieth century--with rollerskates, 2" x 4" boards, and some improvisation. Catch the concrete wave through the decades, as skateboarding developed into a popular pastime, a competitive sport, and a unique culture all its own. As skating continues to evolve and gain popularity, it's no wonder that the boards of yesterday are in growing demand on today's collector's market. This incredible book combines 693 color photos of decks, wheels, trucks, and other gear that illustrate the sport's dramatic changes in design and graphics; photos of famous riders in action over seven decades; a huge list of skateparks in the USA; and a useful glossary to help the newcomer get a handle on skateboard lingo. Full pricing information is provided. This book is a required reference for skateboarders, past and present, an excellent resource for collectors, and a fascinating look at an evolving popular culture!

4 out of 5 stars great starter book.......2004-04-08

Skateboard Retrospective by rhyn noll is filled with lots of wonderful pictures showing skateboard decks/completes. The antique, vintage, & old school skateboard pictures are simply fantastic! I was able to formulate a plan, then execute a vintage skateboard purchase strategy using this book. My hardcore sidewalk surfer days were 1973-87, on the hills of Univ Calif Berkeley, and flatlands of Palo Alto, Ca. Obviously the vintage section of the book was my favorite!!. I actively buy and use collector books as a guide due to an ebay addiction :-)I have a pretty good idea as to what is a good collector guide book and what is not. Thus, I recommend Skateboard Retrospective for skateboard collectors or anyone interested in skateboarding history. Oh, this book got me back into sidewalk surfing again! Yep, in my suit/tie, bald and fat. Started, 2001 & am going strong as long as I don't fall!! Can be seen on Sand Hill Rd, the venture capital location of the world... Guess a skateboarder never really grows up!

1 out of 5 stars A misinformation guide.......2002-03-29

The selective history of skateboarding thrown into a blender and set for puree. While there's some good historical action photos, and neat collectible skateboards, this book is so full of misinformation and jumbled facts that I don't know what to take for the truth. For example it says that Danny Way was an early pioneer of the air in the 70's. Danny was instrumental to taking vert skating to the next level, but not until the late 80's. The book is also merely a tool for the author to promote his own obscure line of skateboards, and for a small group of collectors to inflate the values of their private collections. As proof that the author has not done his homework, mixed in with the "glossary of skateboarding terms" are rollerblading terms! The book best covers the 60's, but after that it just falls apart. I could site more examples, and rant about how bad it is, but you get the point.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Garden Companion.......2003-12-13

This is a beautiful book you can trust to provide solid guidance on growing not only perennials, but companion annuals and vines that tolerate hot, humid conditions. Sullivan also presents lots of ideas for creating beautiful gardens in a range of sites, such as deep shade or at the beach. One of my favorite sections is called "Don't even think of growing these plants here," in which she shares wisdom on plants that are doomed in this climate. Every coastal gardener should have this book.

    Book Description

Take a stroll through the garden of a self-confessed hortimaniac. Gardening is Marie Harrison's avocation, passion . . . some might say, obsession. In her personal, witty style (she refers to her husband as Amiable Spouse, or A.S. for short), Marie divulges her own tried-and-true ways of gardening along the coasts of the southeast United States.

Marie covers perennials, flowers grown from bulbs, herbs, shrubs and small trees, vines, edible flowers, and herbs for flower borders. A section of full-color photos captures these beautiful plants and flowers in all their vibrant glory. Charming pen-and-ink illustrations are sprinkled throughout the text.

Marie discusses the edible and medicinal properties of various plants (there's even a quick recipe or two!), as well as coastal considerations such as salt tolerance; environmental issues such as pesticide use, beneficial insects, and exotic invasives; and gardening for birds and butterflies. She also offers her musings on the seasons in Florida and how she spends her time in the garden during each phase of the year. Whether you're a seasoned gardener like Marie or a tentative beginner just starting out with a windowsill herb garden, this delightful book will make you appreciate the dirt under your fingernails.

The info on line was misleading. I ws searching for information for Mexico as I have a home there. This title came up. It is not what I was expecting. The info on line led me to believe it would include Mexico.

3 out of 5 stars Carolinas not coastal south?.......2007-02-21

I bought this book thinking it was for my area as Wilmington NC is considered part of the coastal South as far as I know. The book focuses on Florida and right off the bat it shows a map of the author's definition of coastal South which doesn't include the Carolinas for the most part. I wish this had been stated in the PR for the book I would not have purchased it. So, although it's interesting I find myself reading it "with a grain of salt" because it doesn't really include my area.

"Gardening in the Coastal South" was a joy to read. It is packed with practical information for this part of the country and the pages are chock-full of southern charm. I have been devouring gardening books in preparation for a complete garden renovation after one of the most disagreeable Florida summers in history. This book will be very beneficial with all of the pointers and personal experiences Marie Harrison included. Harrison's obsession is definitely contagious and the pages are bursting down-home wisdom.

      Book Description

With colorful photographs of more than 400 plants, this comprehensive treatment of the selection and care of seaside plants will be welcomed eagerly by gardeners from Virginia to south Texas.

As more and more of the nation's population moves to waterfront property, and as coastal construction surges, legions of business and residential owners have discovered the challenges of coastal gardening. Plants that might thrive inland often decline and eventually die. Though salinity is the most common and most hostile environmental stress, gardeners also battle poor soil, drought and downpours, high winds, humidity, and heat, not to mention occasionally freezing temperatures.

Robert J. Black and Edward F. Gilman tell gardeners how to conquer these hurdles and establish aesthetic and functional plants that can adapt to a coastal site. Beginning with basic gardening precepts, they present step-by-step information on specific plants, planting, best landscape uses, cultural needs, and plant maintenance. They address watering, fertilization, pruning, and other care concerns of salt tolerant plants.

This guidebook will be indispensable for all southern coastal homeowners, landscape architects, landscape designers and installers, landscape maintenance personnel, retail nursery personnel, extension agents, and for inland gardeners who face problems that result from salt water intrusion. Compact and handy, it will help them plan, plant, and maintain a beautiful seaside landscape.

I'm always surprised to find I'm the first to review a book. However, aside from the pages not being weather resistant (an obvious flaw for a "field book") this is an excellent book on the subject. Separated by section for plants of the beach, marshes, and wetlands. With very many species depicted in fine line drawings, and comes with a very helpful "key to common plants". The guide explains where you would expect to find specific plants, their distribution, habitat, and ecological benefit. A welcome addition to my collection of nature books.

            Book Description

The growing season of the coastal Carolinas is different from anywhere else. Since we are in a transition zone between temperate and tropical climates, plants that thrive in other places only suffer and cause aggravation here. Spring comes early to the region, summer stretches on for what seems like forever, fall lasts into December and winter is over in February, all of which create unique challenges for gardeners.

Henry Rehder, Jr., a noted Wilmington horticulturist locally known as Dr. Plant, is an authority on coastal gardening. His family has owned and operated Will Rehder Florist, Inc. for more than 127 years. Henry Rehder, Jr. himself is the former host of a question-and-answer radio gardening program and is the garden writer for the Wilmington Star-News and Scene Magazine. His first book, Growing a Beautiful Landscape, (Banks Channel Books) is a regional bestseller.

Because gardening in the Eastern Carolinas is distinctive, Mr. Rehder has written a daily guide for gardeners in the coastal plain. The guide, which takes the difficulty out of successful gardening, will be an important resource for coastal residents. Those who are new to the area will quickly learn how to adapt their gardening skills to meet the challenges of the region. Natives of the Carolinas will benefit from the authors vast knowledge and experience with local flora.

Creating a Beautiful Landscape clarifies why our climate poses unique lawn and garden challenges. Divided into seasonal sections, monthly and daily activities, this book explains everything the reader will need to know in order to have a flourishing garden: when and how to prepare the soil for planting; which plants are best for our environment; when to plant perennials, vegetables, shrubs and trees, and how to prepare them for adverse weather. Also included is a clear, yet simple How To section, which covers a gamut of activities to help readers make the most of their gardens.

Designed to be useful to both novice and experienced gardeners, this book helps readers create their own beautiful landscapes. Mr. Rehders passion for the subject shines on every page, making this book an enjoyable and informative read. Creating a Beautiful Landscape will become an essential part of every coastal gardeners reference library.
