Practical??.......2007-04-22
As a person of over 30 years experience making saddles, fitting saddles, and helping people with saddle fit problems, this book falls short of its title "Practical". The word "practical" would lead one to believe there was some useful advice on how to remedy saddle fit problems. Rather the reader is constantly admonished to call his/her local saddle fitter who should be certified by the Society of Master Saddlers. This book was written for a British audience who may have access to such trained personnel close at hand. However, that is not the case in the USA or many other parts of the world. As a saddlemaker, I would not advocate untrained people try to remedy a saddle fitting problem, but a horseman/woman needs to be aware that a problem exists so that (s)he can call a knowledgeable saddler to assess the problem and offer a solution. It's difficlt to determine where a saddle fit problem exists based on what's shown in this book.
Despite the fact that the author states on the cover of the book that there is also fitting advice for western saddles and a host of other kinds of saddles that are not the typical "English" saddle, the book falls woefully short other than a cursory photo of the type of saddle in question. The photos used to illustrate a western saddle are of poorly made export saddles from Mexico. The subject of western saddle fitting is just as complex as English saddle fitting and would require a separate book, more than the three photos shown which offer no information as to the mechanics of how the western tree should fit a horse and rider.
Even though the author makes specific mention of various bones and muscle groups which influence saddle fit, nowhere in the book is there a diagram of horse anatomy shown. Despite the lovely color photos of saddles sitting on a horse's back, it would not be posible for the untrained eye to discern why or why not the saddle shown fits that particular horse.
The various English saddle styles shown in the color photos could be gleaned from a large saddlery catalog without buying this book. And if the reader is looking for pictures of different styles of western saddles used for various disciplines other than trail riding, (s)he will be sadly disappointed.
Proper saddle fit is crucial to the horse's well-being and the rider's ability to ride in harmony and comfort. But ths book is not the best place to get that information. The reader would do better to buy Dr. Joyce Harman's book titled "Your Horse's Pain Free Back" to gain some basics on horse anatomy and how it relates to saddle fit.

What saddle fitting is........2006-12-04
I thought this book lacked alot of information. The writer talked about parts of the saddle but didn't have diagrams to show the parts. It is a book that that glazes over saddle fitting. It is good to tell someone about saddle fitting but not to learn much.
Book Description
Introduction to saddles and saddle fitting. Written for any horse owner or rider. It is accessible to the amateur, yet a comprehensive and informative reference for the professional.

Required Reading for All Horsepeople!.......2006-12-17
"Saddle Fitting for the Horse Owner" is an excellent introduction to the art and science of fitting saddles. It explains in great detail, the construction of various types of saddles, and the reason for that construction. It explains how each type of saddle needs to fit a horse, as well as the consequences of none-fit - which really explained a lot about my horse and his behaviour. I saw a lot of things fitting into place, which I hadn't understood before.
I saw a lot of the mistakes I've made over the years - and some very big ones that I've made recently.
This book should be a "pre-quirement" for horse ownership, most certainly a required reading for anybody who ever saddles or rides a horse. Excellent writing, great research, wonderful understanding of the topic.

Comfort for horse and rider.......2005-09-29
Jessica Jahiel reveals the three principles of superior saddle-fitting and guides you step by step through the selection and fitting process. She also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of new and used saddles and offers important saddle maintenance tips. A good saddle, carefully selected and well cared for, can last a lifetime. With Jahiel's expert advice, you can make the best selection possible for you and your horse.
Only a starter guide, not 'superior'.......2005-09-04
I like Jessica Jahiel, her riding and horsemanship books and articles are always worthwhile but this little guide only goes into some of the areas of saddle fitting and should be taken as 'the bare essentials' rather than 'superior'.
Unlike many guides it does attempt to cover both western and english style saddles and tries to cover a vast subject area from saddle construction right through to leather care with saddle fit being the main lesson.
What the book doesn't cover
- Determining the horse's maximum saddle area. It does discuss the scapula and withers (at the front) but there is no mention of the shelf of the ribs, the 18th rib or determining the width of the spine to ensure that the panels of your saddle are neither too large\long nor too narrow for your horse.
- There is also no discussion of bridging or how to determine the correct 'shape' of the tree for your horse's back (from front to back not just side to side). Should you look for a banana or a flattish tree? How will you recognise these ?
- There is no discussion of assessing the angle of the saddle in relation to the slope of the horse's back - neither the angle from the spine as it flows toward the ribs nor the angle of the back from the base of the withers to the loins and whether this is matched correctly by the angle of the panels as they end under the cantle.
All in all - it's a start but by no means comprehensive - for a few dollars its a a beginners guide.

A misinformed, innacurate and badly written guide........1999-08-18
This is a badly written and inaccurate guide. While I agree with the author that not enough attention is paid to saddle fitting, and that a balanced seat is crucial, after that we part company. His knowledge of English saddles is so incorrect as to be ludicrous. His terms for parts of the saddle are unique at best, and he has no understanding of how different types of English saddles are built and should fit. His grasp of Western saddles is much better but the writing is so confusing and repetitive that it's hard to understand or learn much. The few points I agreed with, I read at least 20 times each. I am a professional saddle fitter and restuffer and I hope no one in search of advice tries to find it in this book. If they don't end up misinformed, they will certainly be discouraged. The author was brave to self publish, but he badly needs an editor to correct confusing spelling and usage, as well as to wrangle the whole thing into an organized structure.

Don't bother - get your saddlefitting information for free!.......2003-03-24
I returned this book because I was so disappointed in it. The diagrams are childlike drawings (close to useless) and the text is limited to the bare essentials of saddle-fitting.
There are better guides to saddlefitting available for free on the web!
Fitting, Selecting & Understanding English Saddles.......2000-01-25
This little book is an excellent resource in an area where there is far too little information. It was informative and easy to understand. No horseperson should be without this guide.
English Saddles Made Easy.......2000-01-24
I was in the market for a new English Saddle and Jennifer told me about her book, Fitting, Selecting, & Understanding English Saddles. I ordered the book and actually used it while I was trying out demonstration saddles (picture me sitting on a saddle, book in hand, checking out the distance between the withers and pommel). It is very easy to understand and you come away with a working knowledge of saddles. Anyway, the end result of using this book is I now have an English saddle that fits my horse (and me) to a "T". I have recommended this book to help other people in their quest for a new saddle, too.
Very useful and informative booklet.......2000-01-21
This little guide taught me things I didn't know (and should have) even after over 15 years of horse ownership. It's clearly written, gets to the point, and has very helpful diagrams where you need them. The different styles of saddles were clearly explained and compared, and the complicated process of fitting your horse doesn't seem so hard after reading this book.
Fitting, Selecting, & Understanding English Saddles.......2000-01-21
This book is an excellent source of information for anyone who is buying, or rides in, an English saddle. It explains the principles of saddle fitting in an easy to understand manner, with good illustrations. The reader will have a much more clear understanding how to select the best fitting English saddle for the horse and rider.

Book Description
The ability of U.S. car enthusiasts to satisfy their need for speed changed dramatically in the late 1940s as car-crazy veterans returned home from World War II with formal mechanical training, courtesy of Uncle Sam. This is the story of how one such veteran, an exB-17 airman named Alex Xydias, established the SO-CAL Speed Shop and helped transform hot rodding from a scruffy, underground, outlaw sport into a defining part of postwar American culture. SO-CAL racers dominated early salt flats racing and the shops products became must-have performance parts, giving SO-CAL international name recognition. This book traces the path Xydias took to develop performance parts, build winning race teams, and become a leader in the early days of hot rod history. Accompanying author Mark Christensens compelling narrative about Xydias and nascent hot rod culture are period photos from notable personal archives, as well as new color images of classic SO-CAL hot rods.

Cool Story about a Hot Time in Hot Rod history.......2006-05-18
SO-CAL Speed Shop: The Fast Tale of the California Racers Who Made Hot Rod History, by Mark Christensen, forward by Alex Xydias, epilogue by Tony Thacker, Motorbooks, 2005.
Hardbound, 10x10", 192 pages, 75 color and 100 B&W images.

There is little question that this book's subject, the hot-rod culture of the early 1950s, shaped the lives of many a baby boomer. If you are a fan of hot rods, custom cars, drag racing, or American muscle cars, even one too young to have experienced that time in American history, this book is a delightful chronicle of the early-postwar period in the car hobby. To read this book is to understand an important part of the ancestry of cars like the Chevrolet Corvette, Pontiac GTO or the Dodge Charger because, had it not been for the hot rodders of the So-Cal Speed Shop period, the Corvette might have never made it past the 1955 model year and the GTO and the Charger might never have been.
In Fall of 1946, on the day he was discharged from the Army Air Force, Alex Xydias, former B-29 mechanic, hot rodder and entrapneurial spirit, opened what was then a new kind of business, a "speed shop" where car enthusiasts could purchase aftermarket performance parts for their hot rods. Xydias' "So-Cal Speedshop" was not the first to sell parts to rodders and racers but it pioneered some business practices the performance aftermarket still uses today. Xydias was also the first to see the value of using professional race team, with well-built cars, sharp looking crews and winning achievements to market the So-Cal Speedshop's products, enhance its reputation and attract national attention to hot rodding as a business and a credible motorsport. The So-Cal racing team, headlined for a time by the famed "So-Cal Speedshop Special" streamliner, set countless records and was on the cover of Hot Rod magazine five times between 1950 to 1953.
The original So-Cal Speedshop closed in 1961 but, in it's 15 years, it had a phenomenal influence on the hot rod movement. Mark Christensen's
SO-CAL Speed Shop is a book, rich in imagery, both actual pictures and what perception Christensen's prose creates with the reader. It explains in what it was like to have been a hot rod enthusiasts, dry lakes racer and Bonneville competitor in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The reader is left with a clear understanding of the events which drove some of the circumstances by which the Corvette, as we know it today-a high-performance sports car powered by the most powerful production V8 engine in any car in its class-came to be.
I really enjoyed reading this book!
SO-CAL Speed Shop is a great read and belongs in the book collection of any Corvette enthusiast who wants to both correctly understand the car's ancestry and enjoy a story about a wonderful time in the car hobby.
Book Description
From the experts at Hot Rod magazine comes this guide to engine swapping. Covers all critical areas to completing a professional quality swap - how to choose an engine, what to look for, engine bay modifications, engine mounts, drive-line considerations and more.
Customer Reviews:
A detailed look at engine swapping........2006-04-03
Even though this book is several years old now its still a good book that covers all the important factors to consider when planning any engine swap. There is plenty of information covering each topic. This will give you an idea why engine swapping can be expensive.Plenty of photos throughout. An old book but a good book.Good value. If you are thinking of modifying any car and considering an engine swap read this book first.
An Old Book In New Cover.......2004-05-09
This is a barely updated book published as a Peterson's title in the late 70s, and while the basics (as applied to RWD cars with front engines) haven't changed, the laws have and so have the reasons for swapping in most cases. The most popular subjects for engine swaps today are four wheel drive vehicles, particularly outside the USA where no off-road vehicle is taken seriously without a diesel engine.
A new edition of this book could be very good, especially if written with non-US readers as well as Americans in mind.
Rover Engine Swapping in the UK.......1999-12-17
Putting a Rover V8 into anything? Want an ideal starting book? This is the one! Little american bias but very very useful for V8 transplants.

Hot Shop is about 25 years of Gene Chapman's blacksmith shop, tooling, fixtures, hot tips and notes, knives, basement collection and products made without a power hammer. Gene says: "Oh yeah, I do have a 50# Little Giant trip hammer, but in the last few years, I have concentrated on projects that are all hand worked and almost no sledge hammer work. I ain't getting any younger and want this old body to last a while forging hot iron. Right under the title "Hot Shop" is the phrase, "Small Potatoes", that's the description of my shop, lines of hand forged house iron, trinkets and other stuff. A one man shop and office; I am the iron pounder, janitor, mail clerk, sometimes writer and publisher. It don't get no more fun than that".
