A Great State Reptile Book.......2000-08-22
Excellent maps, photographs and text. Uses taxonomy current at the time (early 1990s) and uses common names standardized since 1978. The authors provide a wealth of information about the turtles and reptiles native to North Carolina. A must buy for anyone living along the east coast, and any herpetologist or naturalist interested in North American herpetology.

a current-day classic.......2006-03-29
i love this book-an instant classic in the vein of carl kauffeld's 'snakes and snake hunting',in that it so clearly translates the pleasure of being out in the feild with a friend or two,and more so the thrill of finding the snakes you're out looking for....the author john kemnitzer goes into such vital details as weather conditions,habitat/terrain type being hunted at any given time, time of day, species type(s) found, and how they were found...but a nice balance to such important facts are the anecdotes-the fun and conversation had before, during, and after a day of hunting...i also personally liked how the author translates what he still gets out of snake hunting, even though he does not keep what he finds, instead opting to admire them then leave them as they were...also included is an accurate explanation of the most current snake bite envenomation first aid....a great book, and fun read!
Snakes.......2000-11-23
This is a great book to carry in your backpack when hiking through the woods in the Carolinas. If you get bit by a snake, you could look it up in the book to see if it has envenomated you so you can get home and go to a hospital. If it says it doesn't have venom then you can wash it with water and continue your hike.

Book Description
A blowtorch is one of those things that is instantly recognized for what it is, even by those who havent seen one before. Produced from the late 1800s into the 1950s, they show up in antique malls and flea markets, and have become highly collectible. Their enduring brass and bronze construction mean that even the oldest blowtorches can be cleaned and buffed to look like new. When shined they are real attention-getters, and as such they have a following of dedicated collectors. Here is information collectors want regarding blowtorches: who made them, how old they are, what they were used for, which are the rare and valuable ones, how to find and restore them, and how much they are worth. Illustrated with 296 beautiful color photographs, this book will be cherished by tool collectors and everyone with an appreciation for the inventive imagination.

Know Your Florida Wildflowers.......2006-10-31
I can't get over the amazing range of wildflowers growing in Central Florida. Finding this book was a thrill, as now I can identify them all. There's forsythia salvia, pinkish horsemint, beach sunflower, pine lily, and so many more.
For each flower, he provides the scientific and common names, a brief description, flowering time, habitats, geographical range, color photo, and miscellaneous comments.
a look at "Florida Wildfloers".......2000-12-13
The Guide to Florida Wildflowers by Taylor has been most helpful to me, a photographer, in identification for cataloging of my images. The book is well organized and probably one of the most complete on the subject of Southeastern wildflowers that I own or have been able to borrow. The only drawback, which presents itself as a major problem at times, is that many of the images in the book are ill-defined. The flowers in some of the images are either out of focus (ex: Buttonweed, pg. 105) or so small in relation to the picture (ex: White Lobelia, pg. 107) that even a magnifying glass is of no use. Overall though, I give the book a very good rating. I have read a great many books on the subject of wildflowers and have yet to find anything to replace it. MAB
Great for novices and non-novices alike.......2000-01-31
The organization of this book (by flower color) makes it so incredibly easy for you to find the flower you're looking at or for. The photos are clear and helpful, as is the writing. A very handy guide to finding sturdy, attractive, and low-maintenance flowers for a butterfly garden or easy-care back yard as well as being a superb field guide.
Excellent for identifying flowers.......1999-07-25
I have used this book to identify many wildflowers in my neighborhood and undeveloped areas. It is well-organized by flower colors. Also included are excellent and clear sketches regarding flower parts. I highly recommend it for the natural hobby botanist.
Book Description

Rated by an Everglades Wildlife Biologist - Robert King.......2006-04-18
As you might tell from the above title I am quite proud of my professional attachment to the glades. I deeply love the glades and am angered by the deplorable condition that politicians, government and our American culture have allowed this unique ecosystem to degrade to. Americans, especially Florida residents, must be motivated to demand that politicians and government do whatever it takes to recover and nurture what is left of the Everglades. Anything less is shameful! Look for the book I am completing on the Everglades.
Roger L. Hammer's Everglades Wildflowers book is an outstanding work, both by him and the publisher The Globe Pequot Press (Falcon).
Knowledge of wildflowers is not a personal strength of mine. I needed a book that I was confident contained clear, accurate information on the wildflowers that are found in the glades. I'm very curious for any unusual characteristics that are not commonly known about species. Mr. Hammer gave me both. Example: The Horned Bladderwort is a very small yellow aquatic flower that is common to the Everglades marsh. But it was not until I got a copy of Mr. Hammer's book that I learned that this flower is a predator! It is the only aquatic carnivorous plant in North America.
This glossy paged book has color plates, a glossary and something that took me by surprise - a very informative description of Everglades natural history including habitat descriptions.
This is a book of unusually high quality. If you're an Everglades naturalist I think you'll want to add this one to your shelf.
A fine guide to the budding and experienced naturalist.......2003-07-28
I believe that this book will be valuable to the budding naturalist struggling to keep up on a wildflower hike and to the seasoned ranger in Everglades National Park. Arranged by color, the book is easy to use while giving a tour with interesting anecdotes that you can study beforehand. A great addition to anyones Nature Guides.

Customer Reviews:
a wonderful reference.......2005-11-12
Like his book on the flowers of the Everglades, Roger Hammer has again produced a clear concise text on flowers, but this time from the Florida Keys. This is a wonderful reference for anybody that is interested in ecotouring the American tropics. The photographs are great, and the color printing is top notch. The layout, which is organized according the flower's color, rather than botanical family, makes it easy to use in the field.
What a great guide!.......2004-05-16
I am a naturalist in South Florida and I love to identify different plants. Roger makes the plants accessible to the beginner naturalist and entertaining with historical facts about the different plants he has included.

Customer Reviews:
A must-have for the true florida naturalist........1999-09-18
I never realized how often I would use this book in my studies of florida's ecosystems until I purchased it. It is an extremely thourough "all-in-one" botanical description of the state that appears to benefit those roughly familiar with our flora. My only wish is that more complete descriptions and illustrations were given for each species i.e. "A Flora of Tropical Florida" and "Flora of the Bahama Archipelago". These enhancements would no doubt increase the cost of the book though and at its price it is still affordable. For its completeness though once again there is no equal and I consider it a necesity.
The only book of its kind covering the entire state........1998-08-28
This book is a series of keys to identify all Florida vascular plants from ferns to sunflowers; from the temperate to the tropical. Although mainly for a more serious botanist, the keys seem to home in to the main non-technical characters for field identification. This brevity is perhaps a problem when plant material is limited. There are no illustrations except a map of Florida counties (and one plant picture below the title). A synopsis of the flora is given (covers 3,834 species of which 1,180 are introduced and 155 endemics). A glossary will assist the laymen and the forgetful with terminology.
Good features:
1. Taxonomy/nomenclature appears to be open to the recent revisions that were unfortunately not accepted by more conservative authors such as Cronquist (e.g. Eupatorium is treated as several genera here).
2. Explicitly states whether the plant is native, endemic, or introduced, and where in Florida (no maps, but a complete atlas available online.
3. All in one very portable volume for reasonable price; pages sturdy with legible sized print.
4. The book includes endemic species (e.g. Boltonia apalachicolensis) which were new discoveries since Clewell (1985) wrote the guide to the panhandle region.
The main complaints that I have (beside not being in Florida to test it out) are:
1. Families arranged by Englar/Prantl system and not shown in page header, hindering search for families (although genera are arranged alphabetically).
2. Aloe vera is listed in Agavaceae but doesn't appear in the key to genera.
3. No descriptions (but will be in future work according to author) END

Book Description
Bamboos form the backbone of the rural economy of many Asian countries. Although considered very hardly plants, bamboos do, from time to time, suffer from diseases. Bamboos are now increasingly being grown in plantations, and this necessitates increased vigilance against disease attacks, and preparedness for effective and rapid control if the attack occurs.
This landmark publication makes vital information on bamboo diseases widely available, and is expected to stimulate further research and the development of appropriate control measures.
