Third Person Jargon: A nightmare to read.......2007-06-27
The books have good information, if you can get glean it from the poorly edited and written volumes. These books jump back and forth, in a disturbing way, between first person "I did this.." and "Jasmine thinks this...". Unfortunately, You cannot tell if the book is: a. written by a professional cat breeder b. ghost written FOR a professional cat breeder or c. written by someone that feels alright about talking about herself in the third person.
If you can get past the poor writing style there is good information. Just be warned, it is not all in ONE volume. You are being led into purchasing a multi-volume set. "Jasmine will address this in the next book on..."

Jasmine has a way of simplifying the information for the newbies and experienced. I have read it through 2 times already and learned basic info. both times. Cat breeding is not an everyday common venture, it is tough to find people you can trust to help you learn it ethically.
It was helpful with breeding and with marketing. How to place a basic ad to encourage calls and to protect yourself from un-ethical breeders.
I am looking forward to her upcoming books as they will be a great learning and teaching tool to help others also.

When I began breeding there was little information available about breeding, selling and being a Newbie. I don't think much has changed. There are List on topics on the net, but still nothing in book form from an experienced breeder who is telling it, "like it is." The honesty is great. Thank You!!

High Price for Very Little Info.......2007-05-23
I am just getting started in cat breeding. This was the first book I read about breeding pedigreed cats, so I wouldn't say I know a whole lot to begin with. However, there was only one page that had any information I found worthwhile (how to stagger your litters so all the kittens aren't born at once). Most of what she says (and she repeats it a lot), is how to be nice and respectful to your customers. That's a no-brainer! Otherwise, there is very little hard, factual information that anyone, even a newbie, would find helpful. My advice, buy a different book.

I am considering starting a very small cattery. This book has been extremely beneficial and informative. She gives simple, down-to-earth advice in an easy to read format. This is the first book that I have read that gives concrete information about how to market your cattery and how to enter into the cat breeding world.

"Breeding Purebred Cats" was a lifeline for us when we decided to purchase and breed a Maine Coon female. As the author says in her introduction, "It's a simple matter to throw two cats together and hope for the best. But somewhere down the road, disaster and disappointment await the person who believes that 'nature' will take care of everything."
In the exclusive world of the Cat Fancy, it's not even a simple matter to 'throw two cats together'. Everything has to be arranged for in advance (most catteries won't allow their males to breed an unknown female, even one with papers, because of the chance of disease). At any rate, suppose you earn the trust of a cattery owner, or purchase your own male. Then what? Your queen is pregnant. What should you do to ensure that she gives birth to and raises a healthy litter?
This is when "Breeding Purebred Cats" will become indispensible. The author explains in clear, succinct terms how the queen should be handled, how to determine whether she is indeed pregnant, how to figure out when she's going to give birth, how to assist at the kittening, and when to call for help. And "Breeding Purebred Cats" isn't just about breeding and giving birth. It covers all aspects of breeding practices, raising kittens and selling them, and cattery management. We found Anne S. Moore's book essential for the proper care and upbringing of a healthy litter of Maine Coons.

Nice, but................2002-10-02
I purchased a copy of Sheds, Gazebos & Outbuildings from Amazon this summer with the intent to build a shed as a fall project. While not a journey-level carpenter, I have built decks, added a room and so on. Buying the book seemed a good way to get a basic plan and have guidance on construction tasks unfamiliar to me. The first part of the book gives general start-to-finish construction tips (with good photos) and the second part contains 8 sets of project plans (no photos, only drawings and plans). I read parts of the book in detail, scanned other parts and, with some slight modifications, followed the basic garden shed plans. Right now I'm putting on the roof and am pleased with the overall results. Did the book play an important part? Yes and no. Yes, in that it did give some useful guidance and filled in some information gaps. No, in that lower cost plans are available through resources such as your agricultural extension service or local library. Too, the general building techniques section had photographs of a shed quite similar to the basic shed plans. This caught me when constructing the rafters and I think it might for others who attempt to use the book. The shed rafter design in the general part is not the same as used in the basic garden shed plans. Unless the book is carefully read it is easy to be thrown into a quandary as to which method to follow. Upon reflection, I'm a bit suspicious that there are no photos of completed structures for the 8 projects. I wonder if the plans were ever used to build the 8 structures (only drawings are used to illustrate them for the reader). I wrote the publisher to ask why two different rafter designs were shown. I received a prompt, technically correct, and courteous answer. However, there are any number of ways to construct the different parts of a wood structure and thus it doesn't make much sense to include a design that doesn't seem to directly apply to the plans in the book. The publisher's answer avoided that issue; that made me uncomfortable. I fear that if I tried the some of other plans that I might run into similar problems. In sum, I can't recommend that you buy this nice, but obfuscating book

"Building Backyard Structures" is a deceptively good-looking book. Alas, nice color pictures won't help you design and build the shed or other small building you need in your backyard. A more accurate title would be "Plans for Seven Backyard Structures". If you want ANYTHING other than these exact seven plans you'll need to look elsewhere.
The deception starts right at the beginning. The chapters are:
1. Building Materials
2. Planning Your Project
3. Foundations
4. Framing
5. Roofing
6. Siding
7. Doors and Windows
8. Utility Shed
9. Pole Barn
10. Woodshed
11. Garbage House
12. Pool or Patio Shed
13. Gazebo
14. Children's Playhouse/Outdoor Toy Storage Shed
and you'd reasonably expect that the first seven chapters would provide a useful framework for creating your own small backyard project. You would be wrong, however.
In Chapter 3 the book illustrates five types of foundations. Unfortunately, the text then only discusses how to work with two of them; if you've got a wooden post or concrete slab project in mind, for instance, you're out of luck.
Chapter 4 is even more disappointing. Rather than tell you what you need to know to frame a shed wall, it merely states that "Local codes and the structure's design will dictate the stud spacing". The chapter goes through the steps of framing in numbered order, but again doesn't tell you enough to know what you're doing. Another quote: "Step 12: Add the Bracing. Walls with plywood sheathing or siding generally do not require additional bracing." There's no further explanation about when this "generally" applies, or why. Moving on to roof framing, the authors once again fall back to "Local building codes and the structure's design are going to dictate the size and spacing of the rafters" -- again, without telling you enough to create or even modify an existing design. Finally, they tell you how to create only bird's-mouth rafters, but then later in the book the plans for two smaller projects use straight rafters and mitered studs, instead.
Chapter 5 talks about five types of roofing materials, but then only discusses how to use two of them -- neither of which are suitable for shallow-pitched roofs -- but then the book doesn't tell you about THAT pitfall, either.
Moving into the specific projects doesn't provide much greater clarity. Each project has a "Materials List", but in the Quantity column the information is often labeled "as required", meaning multiple trips to the building supply store for you. And don't forget that in addition to the "Materials List", there's also "Miscellaneous Materials"; you need all the materials on both lists, plus the materials they've forgotten to put on EITHER list. Completely missing is any list of tools required; you'll have to read the complete chapter for that.
I won't go into all the projects. I'll just mention a few problems, and hope that provides enough insight into this book's suitability for your purposes. Do note, though, that NONE of the seven projects tell you how or why the structure's design will dictate foundation choice, stud spacing, rafter configuration, or roofing material selection. They just present each plan as if all these questions had already been answered.
In the Pole Barn project the illustration shows a door made with 2x4 battens without diagonal bracing, and the text then says "Refer to Chapter 7 for information on making and hanging a board-and-batten door." But Chapter 7 only shows how to make a door with 1x4 battens with diagonal bracing, and only how to install a pre-hung door.
In the Garbage House project, you'll need a router and four different router bits. No other part of the book mentions a router, how to use it, or why it might be required for a backyard structure. This project also requires you to assemble lattice from scratch, conveniently failing to mention that you can buy the stuff, pre-made, at any home center.
Finally, the Pool Shed project includes a tile top, and just has three paragraphs that literally say "install the tile" and very little else. There's no information about what tools are required other than a tile cutter. Nor do the components (tiles, cement backer board, thinset mortar) show up on either the "Materials List" or "Miscellaneous Materials" for this project. (The cement backer board and thinset mortar are my additions; the text doesn't mention them at all.)
Color me VERY disappointed.

This is the best book of this type I have seen. Separate chapters cover all the basics, such as foundations, roofing, siding, doors & windows, etc. Good hand-drawn plans and drawings and lots of pictures make it easy to visualize how to proceed. The book includes step-by-step plans on how to build 7 different structures, but it's the background "how-to" stuff that I found really helpful.

Good book... but beware of used book price gouging........2002-08-13
I found the book to be very helpful. Instructions, drawings and material lists are all very detailed. I have building experience. A novice may want to supplement with a "how to" book that covers techniques and tools. ("How to Build Small Barns & Outbuildings" by Monte Burch.
<$13.95 at Amazon.com> is good) What I find disturbing is the price for the used copies of this book, ranging from $28 to $41. New, the book sells for only $9.95!!! Something's very wrong with this picture. But, for some reason, no new copies are for sale here. I wanted to purchase a new copy for my brother. At these rediculous used prices, I think I'll let him borrow mine.

Nice plans, but little instruction. Could benefit from pictures of more modest dwellings and projects more suited to the regular homeowner.
A good supplement to other, more detailed books, but unless you are an accomplished carpenter, don't make this your only book.
Good book, but not for beginners.......1999-01-19
This is a good book with excellent plans and drawings, but it assumes you have a background in construction. It doesn't include much background info such as basic techniques and tools. It does have plans and material lists for 15 different structures. I consider this to be an excellent book to be used in conjunction with other books. If you want more "how-to" info, go with "Building Backyard Structures" by Levine, Begnal & Thornton.

there is no picture because the book is a shoddy third rate presentation from 1979. a very, very poor layout...you won't learn how to do much of anything reading this one. surely you can do better with any other book...don't waste your cash.
