The basis for "CATS".......2007-10-12
I enjoyed the poems so much that I gave the book to a friend as a gift.
Get the Movie first.......2006-11-21
The poems were a bit hard for me to read. However after watching the movie (play) and listening to the sound track it was much easier to read.
Excellent poetry.......2006-06-30
Such beautiful snapshots of life in England. I particularly enjoy Skimbleshanks and Gus, the Theatre Cat.
Great book, I'll read it over and over and over and etc. etc........2006-03-17
Book, movie, soundtrack... all good but the book is the best. The book is filled with many cat poems (duh!). My personal favorite is Cat Morgan Introduces Himself, but there are many other good poems too.

Nice pictures - not terribly deep.......2002-08-20
This is a good book for basic information about cats, without getting too deep. The pictures are very nice, making it an easy read. I found myself reading it hungrily, but now need more substance. I'll probably try to give this book away now.
THE COMPLETE ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO CAT CARE & BEHAVIOR.......2000-09-05
I thought this book was very informative, and well illustrated. I think that anyone that is thinking about getting a cat or even anyone that has one already will find this helpful. I needed information about kittens, and found this book the best information on the subject, but it doesn't stop there.
Book Description
A cat book unlike any other: a fresh, fact-filled look at their affections, their aggressions, and their life cycles. Morris explains your cat's most curious habits. Companion volume to
Dogwatching.
Line art throughout.
Customer Reviews:
Great little collection of interesting facts...........2006-09-16
I'm a fan of Desmond Morris and this book represents some of his lighter work. However, it is full of interesting facts that any cat owner would find interesting.
It is consists of 2-3 page sections organized by subject. It addresses questions like, why cats purr, what effect catnip has on them, how cats find their way home, etc.
Desmond Morris is a zoologist and he has a deep knowledge of many subject areas. This is a simple read, but it is quite interesting and a nice gift book for cat owners.
I'm being hunted.......2006-01-11
Well, my toes are being hunted. Somehow, his mayfly attention span has settled on those wiggling things at the end of my leg. His killer instincts awaken, he crouches for his approach, and ...
ouch. I've just got to trim the little beggar's claws.
This enjoyable book describes and explains a lot of what goes on in those furry little minds. If you're among the many fascinated by these familiar, even friendly little aliens, you're sure to enjoy this illustrated series of one-page observations.

Fun and interesting read.......2005-05-18
This book is full of interesting facts about cats. It was a fun read, and I read it in one evening.
I only have two complaints about it. First, there are no footnotes. Morris doesn't cite any of his sources.
Second, he doesn't tell us why we say, "Cat got your tongue?" He answers several similar questions. He explains why we say, "Let the cat out of the bag," and "It's raining cats and dogs," but he doesn't tell us why the cat has our tongue. That's really important, you know.
Anyway, I would recommend this book just because it's entertaining to read. I also read his book on Horse watching, which is just as good.
not enough praise could be given.......2005-03-16
ive read this book in 4th grade and i was amazed, the way he describes things makes learning addicting. today, at 24 years old, id reccomend this book to everyone and have purchased multiple copies over the years to give as gifts. you are at a loss if you dont read this book, as well as the second book in its series "Catlore"
Fun, furry read.......2005-02-26
I don't think I'm "letting the cat out of bag" to say that this is a fun book for the cat owner. If you'd like to know the origin of that expression, it's in this book. Using the vehicle of questions that have occurred to many of us, Desmond Morris, reveals a lot about house cat behavior. The questions range from "Why does a cat chatter when it sees a bird"; "How does a cat use its whiskers", and "Why does a cat sneer". Along the way are some fascinating facts; such as a difference in feather plucking behavior in New and Old World cats, and the ear markings (for example of tigers) as a means of enhancing signaling form the ears. Morris may be forgiven for a few presumptions about cat motives (particularly with respect to humans).

Book Description
Chihuahua! What are two low-riding cats to do when they sign up for a cruise and end up on a ship full of dogs? Chato and Novio Boy try to have fun, but they're miserable watching endless games of Bark at the Moon. Plus, the dogs get sick from all their running around and excessive consumption of milk bones.
When the two cool cats go for help, they see the cruise they were meant to be ona catamaran full of catsand they have to decide whether to join the fun or be cats of their word. With extra storytelling in comic strips on each page, this ocean adventure is sure to garner the laughs and acclaim of Chato's Kitchen and Chato and the Party Animals (both ALA Notable Books).
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, terrific art.......2006-03-31
Hard to compete with such a terrific review, but I must add my own HUZZAHs.
I love the artwork. I love the interspersed black and white comic strips that add to the exposition.
I love the spanish slang scattered throughout: after but a few readings, my 3 year old now says, "FUU-CHI!" (yucky, stinky) as he wipes kisses off (with a smile, of course -- he's a sweet boy).
I bought Chato Goes Cruisin' in a bookstore and ordered the other 2 sight unseen, fully confident that they'll be as wonderful.
They get there fast and then they take it slow.......2006-03-25
Some picture book series get progressively less inspired as time goes on. Ian Falconer's, "Olivia" books do this. Ditto "Babar". It's just a common occurrence that people kind of come to expect. You would think that an author like Gary Soto would have used up all his creativity and ideas in the "Chato" series with "Chato's Kitchen" and "Chato and the Party Animals". In much the same way, Susan Guevara's illustrations should, logic dictates, become less entrancing and pleasant to the eye as she brings Chato's world to brilliant life. Yet here I am staring at "Chato Goes Cruisin'" and I can't for the life of me figure out how Soto and Guevara managed to come up with yet another remarkably fresh escapade in the lives of my favorite barrio boys, Chato and Novio Boy. I can't figure it out, but somehow it happened. We should be this lucky with every series.
There are distinct advantages that come with eating your cereal every morning. In Chato's case, the advantage is that he now has a chance to enter and win a free cruise for himself and a friend. He enters, wins, and before you know it he and his best friend Novio Boy are off for a vacation of pure relaxation. In theory. The truth of the matter is, when they get to the docks they find a cruise ship occupied entirely by dogs. Well behaved party dogs but dogs just the same. There are dog snacks, dog games, dog videos in the library, and a heckuva lot of howling at the moon. Soon enough, however, the dogs become ill and it's up to our intrepid duo to save the day. But when their rescue boat meets up with the REAL cat cruise, will they keep their promise to the canines or join a far more alluring ride?
Once again, Soto gives this book just the right mix of Spanish terms sprinkled alongside English ones. At the same time, Chato and Novio Boy use phrases that sound natural and completely appropriate for the situations they find themselves in. When Chato goes to the library to watch some movies and find only flicks with titles like, "Great Dog Rescues", Chato's reaction is a heartfelt, "Man, this is sorry". The plot makes sense, comes out all right, and the last image of the two slowly cruising in their beautiful car (with the license plate "Vato Gato") brings the whole thing home.
And Susan Guevera just gets more and more creative with every Chato book she illustrates. I liked "Chato's Kitchen" okay when it first came out, but her style at that time struck me as too loose and insubstantial. It began to tighten with "Chato and the Party Animals" and finally here with "Chato Goes Cruisin'" she's hit her peak. She's grown so comfortable with her art that she's willing to shake it up a bit for the sake of amusement. So you have the usual Chato kookiness, but also some very cool black and white comic strips on the bottom of some of the pages to give you a little insight into Chato and Novio Boy's heads. There are also countless amusing details all over this book just waiting for you to find them. When the dogs greet them at the dock, for example, the comic strip on the page shows a flag pointing to their dock with a dog head, and another flag with a cat head pointed in the opposite direction. When our heroes can't sleep for all the howling, they might have been cheered had they known that a cut-away of the boat shows a pack of very busy mice toiling relentlessly in the kitchen. Yum. Then there are the details that I think make it work the best. Novio Boy retains his title as the sexiest cat in children's literature (check out the shot of him lifting weights). And both he and Chato sport some mighty fine facial hair, making them the only felines I can think of to sport goatees and `staches in picture book fare.
Hard to object to anything in this book, really. If you enjoyed the first two installments in Chato's adventures then the best thing I can say about, "Chato Goes Cruisin'" is that it does its predecessors proud. Funny, filled with great slang in English and Spanish alike, and just a rousing adventure, it's the best of the "Chato" lot and a fine fine purchase.

Customer Reviews:
Come on!.......2007-08-18
Perhaps it's the fact that I haven't had any children yet (one on the way), but this book seems awfully simplistic to me even for a children's book! Here's two pages worth of writing: "Sometimes all day in the window he'll sit... All by himself or with his sister Bridget". That somehow fills TWO pages and there are only 13 pages of text!
The first page mentions eating cantaloupe and that's the last time anything about cantaloupe is mentioned in the book. I thought good stories (even kid's books) were supposed to tie the subject matter into the story more than once!!
The book design itself is nothing special. The illustrations are OK, but not that engaging. I definitely was hoping for a better story.
Dr Seuss.... now those are children's books!!
A Fun Cat's Tale for Young Readers.......2003-04-24
My two year old grandson takes great delight in his book collection. He discovered "The Cantaloupe Cat" when he was only 18 months old and it immediately became one of his favorites. It's the first book he hands me to read and he now enjoys sitting on the floor and turning the pages himself. The text is especially child friendly and the illustrations are appealing to grown ups as well. The story of Jerry, the cat who likes cantaloupe, is one children and adults both will have fun sharing.
A book for cat lovers of cats who love cantaloupe.......1998-11-23
The text is just right for young children and the illustrations are adorable. It reveals a secret for most of the public. Many cats love cantaloupe. Even if yours doesn't, you'll appreciate this book.

Customer Reviews:
This is probably the most useful cat guidebook.......2001-03-15
This is probably the most useful cat guidebook I've found so far.
It's filled with many great cat pictures and illustrations, along with easy-to-read text. It is divided in six chapters.
1. The cat through history. This is probably the most detailed text I've found in feline history. It starts from the prehistoric feline ancestors and takes us to a journey through Egypt, Greece and Rome, up to the cruel Middle ages to the modern era. We can see how the once semi-divine cats of the Pharaohs fell from grace and were hunted down by thousands in the Dark Ages. There's plenty of info on cat lore and legends along with several stories of famous catlovers.
2. The cat's anatomy. The basics. Filled with charts that can help you have a better understanding of your cat's features, and very important or identifying different breeds and several illnesses.
3. Album of Cats. A collection of several breeds and their different features. Not all breeds are included here, but it provides adequate information for the average cat owner/guardian.
4. Your cat's physiology. How the feline body functions and information of most disorders. This text can not replace a vet in any way, but it can help you identify a possible illness and rush to your vet ASAP. It is very useful to a cat owner/guardian like myself who has found his/her cat in distress in the middle of the night and couldn't understand what was going on...
5. The cat and its owner. No book can ever prepare you for living with a cat. However, this book makes a decent effort to provide you with the basic information of what to expect. Information on food, grooming, hygiene, distress signs and a very detailed first aid text can help you start this enchanting adventure that's called "Life with a Cat".
6. Understanding Cats. Yeah, right... When you think you've had your kitty all figured out, then it puts up an act to puzzle you all over again... Anyway, this last chapter puts up a good effort to map the feline behavior. It deals with territorial habits, social behavior, feline senses, and several behavioral disorders. There's also a chapter that deals with feline social life, from cats and children to toilet train your cat.
A final note: This is an excellent book on cats, however, if you have just started with a cat, here's a tip that few books offer: In ancient Egypt, cats were considered almost Divine. They've never forgot that, and any cat owner/guardian should always remember this. Because THEY have never forgotten...
Book of Cats by Reader's Digest.......2000-01-12
I have checked this book out of the library and want a copy of my own. As the owner of five purbreed cats, I find this book very informative and a delight to page through. One of my cats had a rare eye condition, and this was the only book that offered information on this disorder. A lot of research has gone into it.
NO Thank you........1999-07-31
Illustrations are very boring and look nothing like a cat much less the cat breed. Buy "Legacy of the Cat" instead.

Book Description
Admired by plant enthusiasts, botanists, and nature lovers of all ages, wildflowers comprise one of the most belovedand diversegroupings of flora in South Carolina. Although relatively small in size, the Palmetto State hosts a remarkable variety of wildflower species, from the trillium and bloodroot that brighten its forests to heliotrope and common toadflax that dot the state's roadsides and fields. With color photographs (all by Richard D. Porcher) and extensive descriptions of more than 680 species, A Guide to the Wildflowers of South Carolina offers a complete and indispensable reference for finding and appreciating these natural treasures.
Employing the same innovative approach Richard D. Porcher used in Wildflowers of the Carolina Lowcountry, he and Douglas A. Rayner simplify the task of identification by grouping species according to habitat. For each species identified, the authors include interesting factsmany not widely known or readily availableabout rarity, suitability for garden cultivation, and origin of common and scientific names.
Of added interest, the botanists share itineraries for more than fifty wildflower expeditions and short essays on a variety of topics, including carnivorous plants, Carolina bays, native orchids, medicinal plants and folk remedies, poisonous plants, edible plants, and the role of fire in natural communities.
Customer Reviews:
Very Informative.......2002-08-17
I took a class this summer and one of the Text we used was the Guide to Wildflowers of South Carolina. This book is very informative and gives many different topics for each plant listed. Later I met Dr. Porcher and he really knows his stuff.
