Charles and Ray Eames: Designers of the Twentieth Century
Pat Kirkham Manufacturer: The MIT Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0262611392 |
Book Description
Charles and Ray Eames, perhaps the most famous design partnership of twentieth-century America, did pioneering work in furniture, film, architecture, and exhibition design. Out of respect for Charles's wishes, no book on them was published during their lifetime. Now Pat Kirkham interprets their work in depth, probing the lives behind the designs and the nature of the collaboration. In researching this major work, Kirkham had full access to the Eames archive and cooperation from the Eameses' clients and associates. The result is a richly detailed study of these remarkable designers and of their work from 1941 to 1978, including a substantial reevaluation of Ray's role. There is much here that will be new to readers who may be broadly familiar with the Eameses' work, particularly in the recounting of their early careers and in the examination of their multimedia presentations, exhibitions, and films.Customer Reviews:

Frameworks for Modern Art (Art of the Twentieth Century)
Manufacturer: Yale University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0300102283 |
Book Description
This generously illustrated volume, the first in the Art in the Twentieth Century series, introduces and explores a range of contemporary issues and debates about art and its place in the wider culture today. The opening chapter discusses key concepts such as modernity, modernism, autonomy, spectatorship and globalisation. It is followed by four case studies, each of which is devoted to a specific work of art chosen from across the span of the century: Marcel Duchamp's Bottlerack, Barnett Newman's Eve, Ana Mendieta's Silueta series, and Yarla by the Australian Aboriginal Yuendumu community. These works have been selected not only for their intrinsic interest, but for the way in which they open up wider questions of meaning and interpretation that are central to understanding twentieth-century art.

Early Twentieth Century Lighting
Sherwoods Ltd Manufacturer: Schiffer Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0887401813 |
Book Description
Innovations in lighting design were rampant in the early decades of the twentieth century when electricity opened a new alternative, and therefore an opportunity, to home furnishing. One of the largest manufacturers of new lighting devices was the English firm Sherwoods Ltd. in Birmingham. In this book ,displayed and specifically described, are all forms of illumination devices the available for sale. Oil burning as well as electrically powered table and floor lamps, chandeliers, scones, and lanterns are shown in vast numbers. The styles range from classical to ultra-modern with all the revival style so in between. It is fascinating to see the variations in size, ornament, materials, and use-all made by Sherwoods. Today, as authentic examples of lights from the early years of this century are becoming scarce, this book remains a testament to the actual styles produced. Antique lovers find it a valuable resource.Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Catalog of Oil Lamps by Sherwoods Birmingham.......2004-02-12
The Catalog has 100s of designs of their various oil lamps : table , hanging , wall etc. The Catalog even has lots of illustrations of the Lamp Parts made by Sherwoods - like various burners, shades, bases , chimneys etc.
The book, or catalog, has only sketched illustrations ( very neat and detailed ! ) of lamps and parts : there are no color or B&W photographs.
Hope You find this review useful !!
Cheers !

One Man's Garden
Henry Mitchell Manufacturer: Houghton Mifflin ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

Mitchell is a miracle in the world of garden writing, where so much careful prose instructs with patronizing intent. Henry Mitchell blazes, bullies, roars, then whispers, awed by the beauty he enables us to see through his eyes. This is a man who once took two weeks off from work so that he could watch his iris bloom. Here his failures and foibles are cataloged along with his triumphant successes. He grew water lilies from seed, achieving a single plant instead of the expected 50, but as he admits, 50 would really have been a bit much, while one seedling water lily became a source of considerable delight to the proud parent. To prevent heat stroke in water-lily season (Washington, D.C., summers are fierce), he cooled off by eating iced Walla Walla onion sandwiches as he gazed at the flowers for two or three minutes at a stretch before the intense heat won out. Quirky, funny, wise, and impassioned, this book is a lasting treat, the kind that rewards each year's rereading with fresh insights and heartfelt laughter.Book Description

Gardening essays to beat the winter blahs...........2001-01-22
Mr. Mitchell wrote two weekly columns for the Washington Post for a number of years--one of them a garden column I never missed reading. His garden columns have been preserved in several books. ONE MAN'S GARDEN follows his first book THE ESSENTIAL EARTHMAN which spread his well-earned reputation as a garden guru far beyond the Post market area. These two books were published while he was alive so one must assume they were collections of his favorite essays. The essays are arranged by season and correspond to the months he wrote them.
Mitchell can be read by gardeners living anywhere. Although his essays contain information helpful to those working in Zone 7, the reader can glean sage advice applicable anywhere. He shares anecdotes about his experiences in his own backyard, and while that might seem far from novel as every other Tom, Dick, and Henrietta is writing a garden book these days, his essays are the best. His writing is funny, philosophical, useful, and a joy to read, especially on a cold winter day when you need to be reminded of irridescent dragonflies hovering over lily ponds (former horse troughs).
In his essay on dragonfiles (July) he informs us they require lily pads for landing, they can't just plop on the water like a pelican. This little item helped me understand I needed to do more to make my back yard friendly to butterflies, dragon flies, and their insect kin. I now have shallow spots in my birdbaths where they can dip their tiny feet.
Mr. Mitchell shares all sorts of interesting insights from his adventures with clinging vines--planting them where they will not grow, growing native variants such as the American Wisteria. The American Wisteria is often overlooked by those who grow the "Oriental" kind from China which Mitchell says if left untended can form a 20-foot clump in the middle of your yard. The Chinese Wisteria is very ornate, and the U.S. Park Service has planted it all over the National Gallery of Art on the Mall, but the American Wisteria is a pretty little thing better suited for the back yard. Mitchell says you can see this Wisteria in bloom at the Henry Botanical Foundation in Philadelphia.
Mitchell's essays range far and near, from Jefferson at Monticello to flower shows in faraway places. He writes in December of bananas, not a local plant in Zone 7 by any means, but one Mitchell considered a "great good plant" nevertheless and he grows one in his back yard in a pot. Although MItchell died several years ago, his essays are every bit as timely useful and funny as ever, and not to be missed.
This book is a delight.......2000-01-18

This first collection of Henry Mitchell's garden columns was one of those instant classics, a book which quickly earned a permanent place on thousands of bedside tables. Though written for the Washington Post, these tales of the city garden travel well. This book, often dog-eared and battered, is found in gardeners' homes all across the U.S.--not just in the South, but in Minnesota, Alaska, and the other Washington. After reading a single page--any page--you'll realize why. Many gardeners quote Mitchell's line, "It is a great joy the day we discover that we can learn things without actually having to make the mistakes ourselves." He regales us with his mistakes, recording the frustration caused by stubbornly planting where his beloved dogs insisted on sleeping or by thoughtless activity ("I speared a superb lily bulb today"), hoping we will profit from his own gardening mishaps. We can and do, but we profit just as much by his company as his advice, which is so clearly the fruit of long and direct experience.Book Description
Although Mitchell offers invaluable tips for novices and seasoned gardeners, readers take particular delight in his opinionated observations--witty, urbane, and fascinating.Customer Reviews:
Worth a second try.......2003-04-25
Why even 4 stars you ask? Well, about a month ago, for whatever reason, I picked it up again and now I LOVE IT!
Henry Mitchell is dry - like the soil under an oak. But he's terribly warm and fuzzy once you get to know him. I write a newsletter for my local garden club and have found quote after quote that I want to use for future issues. They're not la-dee-dah quotes that speak vaguely about the lovely joys of gardening. BLAH! Rather, they're jewels that point fingers at snobby gardeners and kill-joys who scold children for picking crocuses.
This is not a "pretty picture" book. It's sort of a how-to in an essay form. But more than that, it's great writing by a wonderful author on a topic I am crazy for.

Henry Mitchell IS the Earthman.......2000-02-11
I have read (and re-read) The Earthman for more than 20 years. Every time I returned to The Earthman, I had a patient, passionate teacher by my side.
With Henry's guidance, I matured. I learned to accept the rains that turned my garden into a sea of mud. I learned to accept the dogs who had a deep need to explore and "investigate" my treasured plants.
Henry is my friend and mentor. I cannot imagine life in the garden without him.

This posthumous offering from one of America's great garden writers is a gem of a book--not a polished one, for polish was never Mitchell's goal, but brilliant nonetheless. His writing is earthy, rich, and sometimes dark, like good compost. His topics are occasionally raw (as in onions and manure) and always lively. It's hard to write about anything for some 25 years and remain fresh, but Mitchell managed to do it. One especially wonderful piece addresses the amazing mystery of plant loss in a small garden. Where could they possibly go? Mitchell decides that neither neglect nor forgetfulness is the culprit, instead attributing the loss to theft: "I have known cases in which somebody stole something like 'Desdemona' and then, in a cowardly way and probably in the dead of night, sneaked back in the garden and put it back in some strange place." This is one of the best collections of short garden pieces around, a fine introduction to Mitchell's work for those who haven't yet discovered his work and a necessary addition to the collections of those who already love it.Book Description
For readers who like gardening (and love the English language), this posthumous collection of Henry Mitchell's Washington Post "Earthman" columns is "equal parts entertainment and shrewd horticultural advice" (Science News). Henry Mitchell is "beloved for his witty, smart, informed, philosophical, wide-ranging and often wickedly humorous columns" (Detroit Free Press).Customer Reviews:
Simply, the best gardening writer ever...........2004-01-14
The last great collection..........2001-01-22
As Allen Lacy says in the introduction, "For a couple of decades, the luckiest gardeners in the nation were those who subscribed to the Washington Post and ...on Thursday...could turn to Henry Mitchell's "Earthman" column. I can remember a rival column at the time, written by Jack Eden, and while Eden would be spraying for insects and dumping tons of fertilizer on his lawn, Mitchell dug up his lawn and turned it into garden.
The essays are arranged by season--a collection of random writings that appeared in monthly columns in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His writing is warm, witty, and a joy to read on a cold winter day or in the middle of summer sitting on the patio with a tall glass of lemonade.
He covers a variety of plants, grown in his own yard from those solid citizens--roses, peonies and irises--to the esoteric banana trees in pots and lilies in his horse trough pond. In one essay on plants that make their own elbow room, he writes of Agaves in pots that simply crack the sides when the pots become too small, the lotus that eventually sends tubers far beyond the tub, and the water lily that ran a hole in the side of the tank and escaped.
The book is lovingly illustrated by Susan Davis to whom he dedicated the book, and Allen Lacey has written a very nice introduction. Mr. Mitchell died in the early 1990s but his essays are as fresh and wonderful today as they were the day he wrote them. I love his books and wish I had originally bought them all in hard cover as I have read them over and over.
An excellent read.......1999-11-06
Although it is still an excellent read, this collection does not reach the heights of the first two from the same author. Mitchell's first collection (`The Essential Earthman') was long out of print but is now available again. His second collection (`One Man's Garden') is also available. I'd recommend anyone not familiar with Mitchell's writing to read one of those before diving into this book, but only because they are so good, not because this one is bad.
As with his other books, there is a lot of practical advice crammed into these pages, especially for city gardeners. Non-city dwellers may sometimes find the urbanocentric view disconcerting, but never uninteresting.
If you are looking for a "how-to" book or a step-by-step guide, this isn't it. But if you want a book that gives you the "feel' of gardening, this one's for you.
When it's too cold to garden, this is a fair substitute..........1999-11-03
The only bad thing about the book is my envy. Mitchell had so many more options in his zone 7 garden in DC, than my zone 4 in Minneaopolis. Regardless, it's a very nice read in the evenings.
The book we have been waiting for!.......1999-10-24
