3 out of 5 stars Poison dart frogs (Dendrobates) not treefrogs (hylidae).......2004-11-08

Poison dart frogs ARE NOT TREEFROGS!!
Seems like a good book, just added it to my cart,
I just find people that review a book down are stupid because "duh subject x is supposed to be there"-when it clearly shouldn't.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book.......2004-03-12

This is a great book for a beginner tree frog owner. Unlike other books which spend a lot of time describing all the different species of frogs without any honest-to-goodness practical advice, this book has plenty of both.

This book covers some absolutely necessary basics - how to select a healthy animal, how to diagnose and treat an ill one, how to set up a frog's vivarium, what to feed, and how to breed the frogs. Importantly, it is written for a beginner frog keeper and focuses on species specifically recommended to beginners - green tree frogs, White's tree frogs, white-lipped tree frogs, and red-eyed tree frogs. The general information offered on all the species is really thorough without being overwhelming. Because red-eyed tree frogs, White's tree frogs and white-lipped tree frogs need some specific advice, these species are devoted their own chapters.

The book is well-organized into chapters and includes many black/white and color photographs of frogs and vivariums. A must-have for any frog beginner.

    4 out of 5 stars Okay book.......2001-08-22

This is a great book, but it left out the very frog I was interested in. That being poison dart frogs. However, for beginners like me it had great information and led me to believe I should start with a simpler frog anyway!

5 out of 5 stars It's all you need to know!.......2001-06-06

While I was only interested in one frog from this book, the red eyed tree frog, it covered many others as well. This book is extremely helpful in providing both care and breeding tips for your frogs, and it even includes magnificent color photos. I refer to this book as my number one source for tree frog care and would recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars de Vosjoli KNOWS tree frogs.......2000-06-03

A+! This is the ONLY reference book you need if you have, or are thinking about getting, a tree frog. The book specifically covers the White's tree frog, the white-lipped tree frog, the red-eyed tree frog, and the green tree frog. It deals mainly with caring for your tree frog in captivity. There are lots of black & white pictures dealing with feeding, caring for tadpoles & froglets, breeding, housing/caging, and even "doctoring" your tree frog. There is a small section of color pictures which are very clear and well chosen; however, this is not a colored picture book like so many of my other "general" frog care manuals seem to be. I especially recommend it for information that is specific to the White's tree frog.

Teddy bears and ducklings, eat your heart out--there's nothing cuter than a red-eyed tree frog. And award-winning photographer Nic Bishop (The Secrets of Animal Flight) roamed through the rain forests of Central America with rolls and rolls of high-speed film to prove it. Preschoolers will be captivated by the slice-of-life story that Joy Cowley and Bishop tell of this adorable amphibian: "Here is an iguana. Frogs do not eat iguanas. Do iguanas eat frogs? The red-eyed tree frog does not wait to find out." Sharp close-up photographs of near misses with a snake, a long froggy leap, a moth lunch, and a little, eyelid-exposing nap mesh perfectly with Cowley's engaging narrative. The "Did You Know?" section in the back recounts the ins and outs, ups and downs of tree-frog life. (Ages 3 to 5) --Karin Snelson

      Book Description

      Category: Nature
In a tropical rain forest in Central America, a red-eyed tree frog spends the night looking for food while avoiding potential predators. Award-winning photographer Nic Bishop's larger-than-life, gorgeous images document the hunt, which ends happily with the frog settling down in the leaves to spend his daylight hours sleeping! Joy Cowley's simple, readable text makes the frog's story fun, interesting, and accessible to young readers. This is a nature tale like you've never seen before!

like omg! it was such a GRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAATTTTT book. it was like so cool!

4 out of 5 stars Fun, Realistic Frog.......2002-10-21

You see the front cover. The rest of the book is like that: beautiful, vivrant images of the star, a lone red-eyed tree frog.

The "Red-Eyed Tree Frog" introduces us to a tint frig with wide eyes, and a few adventures he has. He contemplates eating an ant, swallows a moth, and narrowly escapes being munched by a snake.

The photographer should get the kudos here, as though there is text, it is the pictures which are the prize. The storyline is bland, unpoetic, but the photos are amazing. We see the frog flying in mid-air, and with his foot being tasted by the snake, and a moth pre- and mid-lunch. There is a cool shot of the frog with his eyes closed, as the frog sleeps, and the odd film covering its eyes.

It is a real look at a day in the life of one tree frog.

      Anthony Trendl

5 out of 5 stars Both of my children love this book!.......2002-02-23

My 2 year old likes to yell, "Look out frog," "Jump," and "Crunch, crunch, crunch," at the appropriate pages. My four year old likes it, too. The pictures are nice and vibrant. This is one of their favorites.

      3 out of 5 stars cool frogs.......2000-09-13

frogs are awesome amphibians i like reading and learning about them.

5 out of 5 stars Eager Red-eyed Tree Frog reader.......2000-04-26

The cover photograph of an alert red-eyed tree frog immediately captures attention and invites one into the book. The close-up photographs are of great clarity and interest with one or two sentences of simple text for each one. Shown are some other animal life forms in the frog's habitat. These are introduced as are the frog's daily cycles, its prey, and its enemies. It shows how the frog eludes them. This book concludes with "Did You Know?" which is two pages with facts about its habitat, physiology and life cycle, which were not covered in the story. This section includes small photographs that illustrate its size, toe suckers, and how it sleeps blending into the environment with its unusual eyes closed. This truly delightful book gives a surprising amount of information. It would appeal to any age level, though its simple text is designed for a younger audience. It would also be an excellent addition for English Language Learners or other Special Needs people. This wonderful introduction of this endearing creature is sure to be loved by frog aficionados. I highly recommend this book.

I had this book as a child, and it is one of the few that I would recommend to everyone, young and old.

This book is beautifully illustrated and has a timeless lesson to tell all people about saving the environment. Following the journey of Hops-A-Bit and Jumps-A-Little, two red-eyed tree frogs, the reader can learn the importance of working to save the natural environment we have left and co-exist respectfully with all animals. Of all of the books that I had as a young child, I believe this one had more of an impact on me than possibly any other.

Please share this book with your friends, family, and your children!

This story of Phoebe and Chub is one that will delight child and adult alike. The illustrations are brilliant - realistic and whimsical at the same time. My sons LOVE this book! They enjoyed relating to the story itself which is told through animal characters that aren't usually used in children's books (ie - the California condor). I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A colorful picturebook about a fish and a tree frog who are best friends.......2006-03-13

Phoebe And Chub is colorful picturebook about a fish and a tree frog who are best friends, and the three secrets to happiness. Rule 1: Make lots of friends. Rule 2: Make your wishes known. Rule 3: Enjoy every moment! The sweeping color artwork vibrantly paints the canyon home of the two unlikely friends, and their exciting adventures culminate in realizing a most wondrous wish - the chance to fly, with the help of a kindly California condor! An afterword from the author tells readers about endangered species - there are only 200 California condors left in the world - and encourages young people to look up more information about species conservation.

          3 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......2005-05-06

Phoebe and Chub by Matthew Henry Hall is a delightful book about best friends and special wishes.

According to Phoebe (a tree frog), there are three rules that will assure happiness.
          1. Make lots of friends.
          2. Make your wishes known.
          3. Enjoy every moment.

Phoebe lives by a creek at the bottom of a canyon. She has lots of friends. Chub, a fish, is one of her special friends. Together Phoebe and Chub meet new animal friends on their daily excursions. One day Phoebe shares her desire to fly with her friends. Those friends take Phoebe's wish and turn it into reality.

Phoebe and Chub reminds us that we all can really do what our heart desires.

The illustrations are colorful, realistic and will grab the attention of the child lucky enough to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Game Lovers and Game Collectors.......1999-05-25

Bruce Whitehill has written a terrific reference work that belongs in the library of any serious game collector.

5 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive and best-written book on board games.......1998-06-05

I'm sure many of you will have noticed that board games are becoming popular again, and also collectable! It is invariably in times of good economy when people seem to enjoy playing and collecting games. The times in history that the best games were invented were the Victorian era, the Roaring 20s, pre-war economic recovery (late 30s), post-war (50s), and off and on until the late 90s current recovery. Because of this, finding game collector's resources such as this one is very useful.

I have several of the board game books which refer to the history, have images of, and list the values of collectable board games throughout their history. "Games: American Boxed Games and Their Makers, 1822-1992: With Values" is, by far, the best written and most useful in starting a collection. I feel that Bruce Whitehill's pricing is very accurate and that the exhaustively researched history of each game and every game company has lead to some important insights about my collecting.

I have found that I use this book most often in conjunction with another good book, "Board Games with Price Guide," by Desi Scarpone (also available on Amazon). The main benefit of the Scarpone book is that there are full-color photographs of every game he lists. He tends to list more pop-culture games, while Whitehill highlights nearly all of the Victorian and traditional games like the Parker Brothers classics, etc. The Scarpone book also doesn't price as accurately; with prices generally being stated as a range, and being more wholesale oriented (half retail).

This book has only eight pages of color plates and only 1/3 or fewer of the games listed has a black & white picture, but there are far more games listed, priced, and described (with contents and histories) than any other book. I refer to it three times as often as the others. It also has great, detailed sections on game history, collecting games, and how to price them, and a GREAT games resources section!

Above all, I think this the best single ! book about board games that I have discovered. I would like to see the publisher/author do a version that has color images throughout, but I love the book for what it is even without the color.

If anyone reading this review would like to contact me with questions or comments, I welcome them.

Purple Hibiscus, Nigerian-born writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's debut, begins like many novels set in regions considered exotic by the western reader: the politics, climate, social customs, and, above all, food of Nigeria (balls of fufu rolled between the fingers, okpa bought from roadside vendors) unfold like the purple hibiscus of the title, rare and fascinating. But within a few pages, these details, however vividly rendered, melt into the background of a larger, more compelling story of a joyless family. Fifteen-year-old Kambili is the dutiful and self-effacing daughter of a rich man, a religious fanatic and domestic tyrant whose public image is of a politically courageous newspaper publisher and philanthropist. No one in Papa's ancestral village, where he is titled "Omelora" (One Who Does For the Community), knows why Kambili¹s brother cannot move one of his fingers, nor why her mother keeps losing her pregnancies. When a widowed aunt takes an interest in Kambili, her family begins to unravel and re-form itself in unpredictable ways. --Regina Marler

          Book Description

Fifteen-year-old Kambili's world is circumscribed by the high walls and frangipani trees of her family compound. Her wealthy Catholic father, under whose shadow Kambili lives, while generous and politically active in the community, is repressive and fanatically religious at home.

When Nigeria begins to fall apart under a military coup, Kambili's father sends her and her brother away to stay with their aunt, a University professor, whose house is noisy and full of laughter. There, Kambili and her brother discover a life and love beyond the confines of their father's authority. The visit will lift the silence from their world and, in time, give rise to devotion and defiance that reveal themselves in profound and unexpected ways. This is a book about the promise of freedom; about the blurred lines between childhood and adulthood; between love and hatred, between the old gods and the new.

          4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-10-06

I really enjoyed Purple Hibiscus. I am intrigued by books of different cultures and places. Some of the content of the book was disturbing and at times heart breaking, but it made for a relistic view into this young girl's life. I am not a religous person at all but I have to say that the positive spirituality in this book was enlightening and touching. One of the things that struck me most was the differences in the way the African characters treated family. There was a lot of love, respect and genuine caring among them, even the younger generation. Being an American it always amazes me how much many other cultures value their extended family and are willing and WANT to do much for them. I am looking forward to reading another book by this author and highly reccomend this book.

5 out of 5 stars As unique and beautiful as the title suggests.......2007-08-16

No wonder Chinua Achebe is delighted by Chimamanda Adichie. And no wonder she can dare weave his legendary title into her story's open. Chimamanda Adichie has a very special writing talent -- raw yet also subtly refined. Her story reads the way incredible dancers dance -- convincingly, passionately, honestly, and seemingly, without any effort. "Purple Hibiscus" is insightful, fresh, honest, real. If you like Haitian writer Edwidge Dandicott (whose work I adore!), especially "Krik Krak," I think you'll also like Chimamanda Adichie.

5 out of 5 stars Good bookclub selection.......2007-07-02

I very much enjoyed this book. My bookclub, Reading Roses, read this as our June selectin and everyone really enjoyed it. I think this book brought out the most discussion we have had in a while. It was quite interesting to read about life in another country; well written; characters were well developed. Good choice for a bookclub.

4 out of 5 stars Very engaging, but simplistic.......2007-06-24

I decided to read this book after Chimamanda won an award in London. The book was definitely worth reading. It grips you right from the very beginning and keeps you hooked till the very end. It also delves a lot into the Ibo Nigerian culture that makes me wonder if non-Nigerians can follow the entire story.

My only criticism is that the book is very simplistic, which may be a good thing for someone who just wants a very light reading.

          4 out of 5 stars Engrossing storytelling.......2007-05-07

Adichie takes any non-African reader into an enthralling fictional world without compromising anything about the context, history and sensibility of Nigerian life. She achieves this through sharp, immediate characterization and a strong storyline. It's not a "difficult" book - it's a total page-turner - but it packs a great deal of complexity beneath its apparently simple surface. When you finish this slim novel, you know you've been somewhere.

            Book Description

Hibiscuses have entered an era of increasing popularity as garden designers and home gardeners rediscover the fine attributes of these wonderful plants. Here is the only book that covers the species and cultivars of the genus Hibiscus completely and in detail. Barbara Perry Lawton surveys both kinds of hibiscus: the tropical, subtropical, and warm-temperate plants whose pure, clean colors are such grand assets to modern gardens and homes, as well as the hardy perennials and shrubs that thrive in spite of snow, ice, drought, flood, or poor soil, bearing bright flowers year after year. These classic flowers have a long and fascinating history. The book chronicles the history and traditions of their use in addition to those of Hibiscus relatives such as hollyhocks, okra, and cotton. With more than 200 species, there is great diversity in the genus Hibiscus. Barbara Perry Lawton introduces all gardeners, expert and novice alike, to the possibilities offered by these plants. A photographic gallery of hibiscuses illustrates the richness of the many species and cultivars from which the gardener may choose.

I had hoped this book would have practical advise for beginners, and lots of pictures, and how-tos, such as how to prune, when and where, but I was disappointed, too much information and history that I did not need to know. Not much help for those with plants in containers, and those in the Northeast.

If you are someone wanting to read more about the history and species of Hibiscus, but don't know where to look, Barbara Perry Lawton's book is the place to go. This book is full of useful information for anyone wanting to learn more about growing these beautiful plants in their garden. Chapters on propagation and cultivation are included and highly informative.
This is a great bok for the advanced gardener that would like to learn more about this interesting plant group.

            Book Description

The year is 1954. A white woman’s body, stuffed in a coconut bag, has washed ashore in Otatiti, Trinidad, and the British colony is rife with rumors. In two homes, one in a distant shantytown, the other on the outskirts of a former sugar cane estate, two women hear the news and their blood runs cold. Rosa, the white daughter of a landowner, and Zuela, the adopted “daughter” of a Chinese shop owner used to play together as girls—and witnessed something terrible behind a hibiscus bush many years ago.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A deadly serious story of crime and its emotional toll.......2002-08-04

Set in a Trinidad island village in the 1950s, Bruised Hibiscus by Elizabeth Nunez (Distinguished Professor of English and Director of the Black Writers Institute, Medgar Evers College, City University of New York) is the compelling story of two female friends who witnessed a woman's unspeakable murder through a hibiscus bush as children, and memories of the horror haunt their lives, destroy their ability to form healthy relationships, and ultimately bring about their reunion and a search for freedom and balance. A gripping, deadly serious story of crime and its emotional toll, Bruised Hibiscus is strongly recommended reading. Also highly recommended are Elizabeth Nunez's earlier novels: When Rocks Dance and Beyond.

            4 out of 5 stars A worthy read.......2002-05-25

Brusied Hibiscus is set just as the shadows of colonialism begin to recede in 1950`s Trinidad. Wealthy white planters still control the bulk of labor prospects. African, South Asian and Chinese immigrants work the land living in stark contrast to the wealth of whites. At this time, and in this place, the stories of two women unfold.

Zuela is twenty-eight, already the mother of ten children and married to Ho Sang, a man old enough to be her grandfather who insists on treating her as one would an incompetent child. The other is named Rosa, also twenty-eight, the youngest daughter of a white plantation owner. The only of three sisters not sent to England for betrothal and the only to marry a Black man, deemed worthy in part because of his occupation. The two women shared a bond like sisterhood as children, but each has forgotten the other in adulthood.

However, when the decomposing body of a white woman is found in a river in the town of Otahiti, the intricate skein of race, gender, class, and culture that propels Trinidad forward begins to come undone. The news spreads far and fast and while some are quick to dismiss it as man-woman business, most know the act is indicative of much more. The dead woman`s body triggers a memory of sexual abuse that Zuela and Rosa witnessed together as girls. Each is forced to recognize that she must make a change in her life or risk losing herself or killing someone else. And so for the second time, Zuela and Rosa`s path cross.

Nunez is a gifted writer. She employs the brevity and repetition of poetry in her work. She writes unpretentiously, deftly inserting sex, murder and cruelty into a story that also speaks truth to friendship, love and a miracle or two. She is able to create a telling story that is not cheapened by the often-exploited aforementioned themes. Her writing is like the sway in the walk of a confident woman. Buy it. Read it. It`s good.

            5 out of 5 stars Telling Beautiful/Painful Truths.......2000-11-06

One of the things I liked best about this book is how Elizabeth Nunez unflinchingly tells some pretty "hard truths" about issues that most writers would rather skirt: colonialism, racism, male/female relationships, sexual and emotional abuse, murder and power relations. However, let me not give the impression that this is some kind of boring, heavy-handed manifesto -- I lost sleep over "Bruised Hibiscus" because I couldn't put the book down. It's a painful, traumatic kind of read (especially for anyone who has suffered abuse themselves) that doesn't exactly make you feel like skipping through the tulips once you've finished -- but that's exactly the point. It's also an engaging, thought-provoking, and beautifully written book that really "hooks" you.

            5 out of 5 stars Powerful novel.......2000-10-05

Bruised Hibiscus is a powerful novel. The author, Elizabeth Nunez, explores two Trinidadian women, their lives, their marriages, and how a series of events explodes their unsatisfactory, stagnant existence. A disturbing, compelling work, full of lush description and strongly drawn characters. A world of Caribbean obeah and Catholicism, everyday domesticity and marital drama. Throughout the book, there is always an undercurrent of the power of friendship, love, and the inescapable past. An important Caribbean work.

4 out of 5 stars sensuous and powerful.......2000-07-08

Set in Trinidad in 1954, this is the story of two women, Rosa and Zuela, who are linked by an act they witnessed together as children: the sexual violation of a young girl. Adults now, and long separated, their lives come together again through the catalyst of a murdered woman's body found by a fisherman. The murder, and their husbands' reaction to it, shakes loose something in the consciousness of both women. This is "man-woman business." They recognize it in its extreme, and they set about to reclaim their lives, at whatever cost. The book is a dark exploration of sexuality and power and is well worth the read. My one objection is to the style of the book. The prose definitely veers toward the purple end of the spectrum, and the run-on sentences often include repeated parts of previous sentences, that repeat over and over throughout the book. This is done perhaps to lend power to the words, in the manner of an incantation, but the effect is somewhat akin to reading "This is the house that Jack built..." and becomes an obtrusion that ends up detracting from, rather than enhancing this powerful story.

There are so few books concerning this plant that hibiscus fanciers should have this one. It is unfortunate that it is writen mainly for the hibiscus grown outdoors. It does, however include a few pages about container grown plants. The basics of growing hibiscus and discussion of species is informative. Recommended only for growers from southern US.

            Book Description

A Small Town Called Hibiscus is one of the best Chinese novels to have appeared in 1981. Its author Gu Hua was brought up in the Wuling Mountains of south Hunan. He presents the ups and downs of some families in a small mountain town there during the hard years in the early sixties, the "cultural revolution," and after the downfall of the "gang of four." He shows the horrifying impact on decent, hard-working people of the gang's ultra-Left line, and retains a sense of humor in describing the most harrowing incidents. In the end wrongs are righted, and readers are left with a deepened understanding of this abnormal period in Chinese history and the sterling qualities of the Chinese people.

                Book Description

A lyrical anthology of contemporary poetry from India

English speakers may read for the first time a previously hidden literature of great beauty and importance, compiled and translated by one of the foremost scholars of the literature of twentieth-century India. Richly appealing, sensitively and masterfully translated, surprisingly accessible, and adeptly organized, these poems from the Telugu language of southern India will find in this groundbreaking anthology the wider international readership they deserve and a place in the worldwide emergence of India's vernacular literature.

Velcheru Narayana Rao is an ideal guide for the English-language reader's timely introduction to this long and vigorous literary tradition and to the generously varied poets whose accomplished, exotic, enigmatic voices speak to us here at last in the boundless tradition of all great poetry.

                    Book Description

This collection of articles by 14 Middle East historians is a pathbreaking work in the history of Middle Eastern women prior to the contemporary era. The collection seeks to begin the task of reconstructing the history of (Muslim) women's experience in the middle centuries of the Ottoman era, between the mid-seventeenth century and the early nineteenth, prior to hegemonic European involvement in the region and prior to the "modernizing reforms' inaugurated by the Ottoman regime.

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing essays on forgotten women.......2000-04-24

The scarcity of information on early modern Ottoman/Islamic women makes this book a real treasure, and the glossary of Arabic/Turkish terms is especially helpful. For the amount of information between the covers, it's definitely worth the price! For Westerners who seek a better understanding of Islam, the history of Muslim women is crucial. Women of that period were married between 12 and 17 (compared to 24-26 years of age for Western women in the early modern period). The Ottoman woman's marginalization and subjugation is not far from the Western woman's--yet it is based not on physical weakness, but on fear of the woman's "fitna"--her potential to tempt men and be a threat to social order! Were all Islamic women locked up in harems? Certainly not, and the book explains other aspects of a woman's life, such as the power of instant repudiation (divorce) which the husband possessed, the "nuqsan" (deficiency)of a woman's nature, and the religious, political and social restrictions women were under. Do not confuse Ottoman/Islamic practices of that period with the mandates of the Prophet, however. Taken in the context of the period, the many essays offer a fascinating glimpse into the real world of an Ottoman woman.
