I purchased this book while I was waiting for my own Leonberger puppy. It is a nice introduction to the breed and covers all aspects of the personality of this wonderful breed in a straight forward manner. A must for anyone involved in the breed. Especially since there are not too many out there.

Should a temple be seen as a work of art, its carvers as artists, its worshipers as art critics and patrons? What is a temple (and its art) to the people who make and use it? Noted anthropologist Hildred Geertz attempts to answer these and other questions in this unique look at transformations in material culture and social relations over time in a village temple in Bali. Throughout Geertz offers insightful glimpses into what the statues, structures, and designs of Pura Desa Batuan convey to those who worship there, deepening our understanding of how a village community evaluates workmanship and imagery.
Following an introduction to the temple and villagers of Batuan, Geertz explores the problematics of the Western concept of "art" as a guiding framework in research. She goes on to outline the many different kinds of work--ideational as well as physical--undertaken in connection with the temple and the social institutions that enable, constrain, and motivate their creation. Finally, the "art-works" themselves are presented, set within the intricate sociocultural contexts of their making. Using the history of Batuan as the main framework for discussing each piece, Geertz looks at the carvings from the perspective of their makers, each generation occupying a different social situation. She confronts concepts such as "aesthetics," "representation," "sacredness," and "universality" and the dilemmas they create in field research and ethnographic writing. Recent temple carvings from the tumultuous and complex period that followed the expulsion of the Dutch and the increasing globalization and commercialization of Balinese society demonstrate yet again that any anthropology of art must also be historical.
Illustrated with over 150 photographs, drawings, and maps, The Life of a Balinese Temple is an unparalleled record of a complex communal achievement. This was a highly interesting and informative book discussing the culture and religion focussed in two villages, one Hindu one Muslim in the Buleleng region which is pretty much North Bali including areas such as Singaraja. The book is quite scholarly in it's approach and language which marks it as being quite different to most other books about Balinese culture and religion which are generally travel based guides and journals. A fascinating read for any religious studies scholar or anyone interested in Balinese culture

The devil's in the detail.......2003-08-23
I am Balinese and live in Ubud in the cultural center of Bali.
In the Eighties I used to see Fred Eiseman, with a notebook and pen in his hand, at temple ceremonies all over the island, and in my restaurant, taking voluminous notes. I often wondered what he was up to.
Now I know. He has produced the most detailed descriptions yet of most aspects of Balinese life and culture. He lives down in Jimbaran on the south coast, so many of his descriptions relate particularly to that area - practices change a bit in different places.
He understands the Balinese language, which is not the case with many academics, who visit Bali briefly and write learned treatises, and don't always get it right.
Fred's book is extremely well researched, and my only criticism is the detail (in places) and the repetition. That is because the book is a collection of essays. It does mean, however, that you can dip in and out of any chapter. They are self-contained, and that is useful.
Exhaustive Explanations of Balinese Thought.......2000-06-18
A compilation of essays about Balinese religion and culture, author sometimes ends up repeating himself (though he does warn the reader of this, right off the bat). But it's really a wonderful volume for anyone who wants an in-depth understanding of the Balinese.
Eiseman is thorough in his detail, but the style is not at all dry and academic. There are lovely little personal anecdotes, and it really comes from the heart of a man who has spent much of his life in Bali.
Cosmology and religion are covered in this volume, such as an explanation of how a home is built with respect to cosmic forces and directions. There is a valuable guide to festivals, complete with calendar. Especially fun is Balinese astrology, and the author writes extensively about this.
A possible approach: read the Lonely Planet cultural section first, then go to Bali, then read Eiseman.
The better of a 2-part series on Balinese daily life........1999-05-13
Although it won't tell you where to stay or which restaurant to visit, the book is a great, unpretensious guide to the elaborate daily rituals of the Balinese, written by an American who's developed something of an obsession with Bali. It offers the clearest descriptions available of mask making, Balinese dance, temple rituals and offerings. The book is so good you'll find it on every coffee table in Bali.
Excellent resource for the serious traveller........1998-03-09
This book covers Balinese religions and culture in ways that are both informative and useful for the serious traveller/tourist or casual student of Bali.
Having spent six months in Bali in the '70's and having read extensively, I am even more enthusiastic about this book.
Volume two covers more limited and esoteric topics.
You should get a good map to accompany this book.

GOOD INTRO TO THE RHYTHMS OF AFRICA, BALI AND INDIA.......2000-06-08
This is a very good book for those who are interested in World music and/or fusion music and want to be able to play all those beautifull and often complex rhythms that one hears in that type of music.
The first chapter is about the Rhythms from West Africa, it has a clear chapter on polyrhythms and a formula to figure them out. Chapter two deals with the rhythms from Bali, the one you will hear in Gamelan music, and chapter Three deals with Indian Rhythms, Both from North and South India.
And then in the fourth and final chapter one mixes all that rhythm knowledge to create new patterns, hence the name Future Possibilities.
If you do all the exercices in the book you are well one your way to play and understand the rhythms that masters like Trilok Gurtu and Glen Velez play.
Also recomended are Rhythm book authors like Reinhard Flatischler, Alan Dworsky, Sule Greg Vilson, Peter Magadini and Tom Klower.

To many Australians, Bali is a tourist paradise. Rarely do visitors go beyond this surface appearance. Howe offers a more nuanced appreciation. He begins with the now infamous Kuta bombing of October 2002, which killed over 200 people. About half of these were Balinese, and the other half tourists. He uses this to lead into an analysis of the tourism industry. Where there has been suggestions that it is somehow cheapening traditional Balinese culture. From this, he gives a recap of the island's history and its society. Bali was never free of outside influences. From Muslims to the Dutch colonialists and the Japanese invaders.
We see how Balinese Hinduism differs subtly from the mainstream Indian Hinduism. Reflecting the rich cultural traditions and history specific to Bali. Also, Howe describes how new religious beliefs are emerging. And of the complex social hierarchies within Bali. There is an intersection of ordering due to Hinduism, wealth and kinship.
Especially if you have visited Bali as a tourist, the book gives a far deeper view of that society.
