Good assessment concerning many aspects of these fishes.......1999-12-07

Barrons in general, does a great job in presenting thier information in a concise and clear manner. Even beginners will have no problem following along in this 'pocket reference' publication. Do not let the price or size of the book sway you. It is packed with all of the pertenent information. Tanganikan cichlids are wonderful fishes and barrons does an excellent job of intoducing all of the husbandry techniques needed to keep these fish happy and healthy. One drawback is that more experienced aquarists or ichthyologists might find the book lacking in some of the detailed areas. Although overall, you pretty much can't go wrong when purchasing this book

Mr. Smith covered all the bases with this book. From giving an educational step by step way to set up and maintain an African cichlid tank. he offers good quality pictures of a wide variety of fish with a very informational care and breeding for each fish. I recommend this book to all interested in keeping these fish.

Very worth it for the price.......2001-05-22

This is a good book for learning about Tanganyikans...

It has alot of useful information for such a small book. For someone unfamiliar with the habits of Shell-Dwellers this is very informative. It gives you recommended tank sizes for most of the popular Tangs (Neolamps, Frontosa, Calvus, Lamps) as well as a limited compatability between certain species.

There is a section about which plants can survive in an African tank... this is hard info to find.

The only think that I found lacking was a complete section of photos, descriptions, specs and stats of each species. This would've added alot to the book and made it into a true reference guide.

In any case it is a very fun book to look at from time to time. There's always stuff in there to learn about.

Good but.......2006-02-20

This is a good book with beautiful glossy pictures, but the information in it is very basic. The first 44 pages is devoted to setup, equipment and water with adverts thrown in under the guise of showing you equipment that you should buy for your cichlids. If you are experienced with aquariums(I have maintained different types for over 25 years) you will find most of the first 44 pages a "101" course. The last 20 pages of the book suggests beginner fish for your tank, which I found useful as this was my first African cichlid tank.

A good beginner book, but a bit thin on info about the actual fish.

GREAT BOOK.......2003-05-09

The book is a little thin but remember dont judge a book by its cover. The pictures are GREAT!!! I have been a cichlid breeder for about 25 years and just recently i went into africans and this was one of my first books. The only problem is that it doesnt elaborate on some things, but its a great book.

As a friend of mine (that owns a pet shop) said, "I really wish this book had been around when my 8 year old did a report on fish. . .". The book is beautiful. If you need some great pix or if you need some pretty easy text to copy, go for this book. If you have an in depth interest in cichlid keeping or breeding, get the book by Loiselle.

A greate book for beginners.......1998-09-13

This book has a lot of general information about Tanganyikan cichlids and the way to keep them in a home aquarium. The pictures in the book have a special glossy cover, which makes them look very good. It's an excellent 'first book', but someone interested in information about specific cichlid should search for them in another book.

Best book out there for African Cichlids.......2006-01-11

What an amazing book!!! Amazing content with very useful information and beautiful pictures to boot. I dare you to find a better book out there on African Cichlids.

A great spectrum of stupidy !.......2003-10-02

First of all the book is 448 pages long (you would think there would be an abundent amount of usefull information) well THINK AGAIN ! The book is full of pictures with outdated scientific names, the only information about breeding any type of cichlid (being malawi or tang) is that you throw in a male with two or three female keep the water clean and BAM, you will have fry everywhere! It takes him about 20 pages to say this, in which he keeps repeating about just putting the fish in together and keeping the water clean. This book is trash and I am highly dissapointed, I wouldnt sell it for the simple fact that I would feel as though I am cheating someone out of money. If you are, on the other hand, looking for a book because your 2 year old seems to be fascinated by fish and fish pictures, then this would be ok for you. Out of the 448 pages 300 are pictures with no information about keeping the fish in an aquaria whatsoever, no explanations & poor "guessing at the correct names"; as he refers to over and over again "this is probably a ___ sp " Very jumbled and poorly organized ; even with the photos ~ this book doesnt even deserve 1 star!

A great disappointment.......2003-09-29

I thought that this book will have all the info i'll need for my African cichlids aquariums, but this book is a total flop ,
surprising with the names that were responsible for its release.
It has little info on the life of the African cichlid of lake Malawi & Tanganyka and nothing else , it is mainly a picture book (more then 90%) WITHOUT any data on the fish in the pics.
It seems i'm stuck with it but you can find much much better books to spend your money on.

Full of pictures with missing information.......2001-05-09

I bought this book in order to gain practical information on cichled species and their identification but I am highly dissapointed. It is full of pictures with a lot of missing information (such as sexsing, behaviour or breeding) and it is full of technical descriptions which are not helpful for an amateur aquarist. Photos of the lake Malawi and Tanganyika fishes are all mixed up; pages are not organised at all.

Don't repeat my mistake.......2001-04-24

One expects when buying a book by such a respected author to acquire a truly great book. This is not the case with this book. First of all, most photography are of very poor quality. Second, not all pages are numbered! This make the job of identifying fishes a lot harder. I'm very disapointed.

I am a chronic pain patient who has found it nearly impossible to be treated for my problem by conventional M.D.s. They somehow think it is virtuous to be twisted by pain on a day to day basis rather than partake of the evil poppy. I found the chemistry cited in the book to be sound, but was taken aback by the anti-drug rant. Surely there must be better, less biased literature out there.

I have to wonder if the publisher insisted the anti-drug rants be inserted in the book as a pre-condition to publishing. I wouldn't be surprised.

OXY - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.......2006-04-08

The title of the book OXY is a misgnomer, because the book talks about all opium alkaloids, not just the semisynthetic narcotic Oxycodone (OxyContin TM-Purdue).
The good: this book is an excellent revue of the opiate literature and includes the original pharmacologic and organic chemistry papers with their cited references. Also, there are various DEA and USDA reports on cultivation of poppies, the Golden Triangle of Laos, Myamar, China, Vietnam, etc. where illicit opium, morphine, and heroin are produced, as well as all the backyard processes of producing heroin.
The bad: the introduction and opening chapter perpetuates some of the common myths about opiates, such as attributing "soldiers disease" (civil-war veterans hooked on opiates) to heroin. Heroin wasn't synthsized until 1873 and was only commercially distributed by Bayer in the 1890s. Also, the author referes to opiates as "poisons" which is a bit of hysteria.
The ugly: in the first chapter there is a bit of ranting about "script doctors" and medicare fraud that has no place in the book. Indications for the use of the narcotics are mentioned, but without citing medical research or offering medical credentials by the author.
But in summary, despite the bad and the ugly, this is an excellent book if you are an organic chemist, pharmacist, chemical engineer, practioner, pain patient, or heroin user to educate yourself about opiates. THIS BOOK NOR THIS REVIEW ADVOCATES THE USE, ABUSE, POSSESSION, MANUFACTURE, etc. etc. of the substances, plants, precursor chemicals, or laboratory apparatus mentioned in the book, most of which are illegal in the U.S.

This is a great book covering the chemistry and pharmacology of opiates and opioids. This book has a suprising amount of data, covering the various extractions of morphine, codeine, thebaine, and other opioids. Also covered is the exact syntheses of oxycodone, and various other related drugs. Something I thought was interested is the conversion of codeine into morphine.

This book has suprisingly little information on the synthesis of heroin - only one method is covered and it is from a report you can easily find over the internet. This book is, nonetheless, very good, and a required part of any Otto Snow collection

its a excellent book on the alkaloids of papaver somniferum. its intented for those chemistry types in a way, not for someone who is interested in just growing the poppy. shows you how to extract thebaine, morphine and make heroin. elaborate extraction process for making oxycodone from the main precursor thebaine. a good book!!!

This study introduces a novel, cultural interpretation to the overall impact of the Catholic Reformation in Europe on the changing facets of the religious life in the indigenous communities of southern Mexico, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It examines the modes by which Spanish mendicant priests translated norms, standards and mores enforced by the Tridentine dogma into the far-removed contexts of the New World. Using a rich variety of both Spanish and Maya colonial sources it closely examines Dominican preaching, local cosmology, and the state of faith in the area, as well as the changing ritual practices that emerged within the Indian parish during this era. Moreover, it vividly illustrates how the Indians adopted, transformed, or rebuffed the Catholic notions impressed upon them in the process of religious conversion. The study is characterized by a profound sympathy with and respect for the local Maya and their resourcefulness in negotiating the cultural politics of colonial domination. Rather than seeing Christian evangelization as a wholly one-sided process, Megged emphasizes the active role of the Indian populations in reformulating alien doctrines and rituals within native frameworks. The study also draws on a substantial body of secondary works on contemporary developments in Europe, and among its innovative tenets is that New World evangelization was not a wholly separate but an integral aspect of the Catholic Reformation that proceeded in an interactive fashion on both sides of the Atlantic.
