Outstanding! Written by the Edith Izant, a long-time Kerry breeder and well respected judge. One of the canine worlds most informative sources on the breed. You will enjoy the photo's, as well as, a somewhat uncertain origination of the breed. See photo's of some of the worlds top-winning and top-producing Kerries and read about the breeds versatility. A must have for the Kerry Blue owner, be it novice or all-time Kerry lover.

    Book Description

THE MODERN KERRY BLUE TERRIER BY VIOLET E. HANDY and Others. A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT. Originally published in 1933, this extremely rare early work on the Kerry Blue Terrier is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and photographs, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The author was a highly respected breeder, exhibitor and judge of Kerry Blue Terriers. This was the first comprehensive book of the breed to be written. The book's eighty pages cover all aspects of the Kerry Blue Terrier. Several of the nine detailed chapters have been contributed by other well known experts on the breed. Commencing with the origins and history of the breed, it moves on to discuss buying, breeding, feeding and showing, amongst many other topics. There is an illustrated "Standard description of the correct appearance and scale of points" and a number of excellent photos of famous dogs of the day. This is a fascinating read for any Kerry Blue Terrier enthusiast or historian of the breed and also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

    Book Description

Named for County Kerry, the Irish Blue may have derived from some legendary "blue dogs that swam ashore from a ship wrecked in Tralee Bay." Singed with romance, the origins of the Kerry Blue Terrier befit this distinctive terrier among terriers. In addition to being a feisty and game earthdog, rugged enough to rid the landscape of rats and badgers, the Kerry is a versatile farm dog, a trainable hunting and herding dog, a confident watchdog and a delightful companion. Although strong-willed, as are all terriers, the Kerry excels in obedience and agility competition and possesses the confidence and panache to make heads turn in the show ring. As a companion, the Kerry Blue Terrier is able to delight dog lovers of every age with his clever and entertaining ways, his unmistakable affection for children and his unflagging devotion to his people. For the right owners, the Kerry makes an upstanding and handsome addition to a loving household.

This book discusses selection and care of the puppy as well as house-training, obedience training and dealing with and preventing behavioral problems. From the first days with the new puppy in the owner's home to the special care for a senior dog, this new volume will prove an invaluable addition to every Kerry lover's library.

5 out of 5 stars A Book that Deserves Recognition!.......2007-07-20

Two years ago I obtained my beloved Kerry Blue Terrier, as my first official dog and first show dog. About 7 Months prior to purchasing him, I had pre-ordered this book through my local bookstore and when they had it in I was ecstatic...I had already heard that the author was a "Terrier Guru," so I had faith that this book would help me learn a bit more about the breed. And it certainly had. When I finally brought my little guy home, I had finished reading the whole thing, but was glad to have it around for a quick reference every now and then...two years later, I still look through the book whenever I need help with a Kerry issue (though his breeder is wonderful help, too!).

A big plus for me is that his father, grandparents, and great grandparents are featured in this book! So it's always fun to show people what great specimens of the breed his bloodline consists of :)

I totally recommend this book to anyone considering a Kerry! Bardi McLennan does a good job describing the breed's history, health, grooming needs, etc.
And if you decide that the Kerry is the not right terrier for you, she has written many other great terrier books worth checking into.

5 out of 5 stars Very well written!.......2007-05-07

I research the breed for a while prior purchasing a puppy, I wanted to make sure we are the right family for this dog. This book was very comprehensive and among all those I had looked at it was the one I purchase for the content and amount of information regarding the most important aspects a new dog owner ought to know. The price was right too.
    Thank you!

                    Book Description

Deer...you love them or you hate them, but no matter what, deer have an appetite for delicious plants we plant in our garden and around our home. You've seen the residue in the morning: spiked hostas, chomped impatiens, mangled hydrangea. How can an animal that cute be so hungry? Fences and sprays and dogs just don't go far enough and most people stop short of venison surprise for dinner.

Excellent resource for those of us who live in "deer country". No more half-eaten landscaping.

5 out of 5 stars Far From the Madding Crowd.......2006-05-17

It is said; `All that glitters is not gold.' And while this is true, also keep in mind; `All that is green is edible.' Well, at least to something out there.

So when all of us urban gorillas, myself included, decide to forsake civilization in pursuit of the simple life, keep the former two adages in mind. Because to our four legged friends, all that is green is definitely edible to them. Fleeing the cities in throngs and invading the sub-urban country, we fail to keep in mind that we are the interlopers. Not the other way around. The animals definitely have the advantage.

However, our station, and an ecologically balanced existence, is not without hope. By reading "Gardening in Deer Country", you can level the playing field. The author provides an in-depth, tongue in cheek survival guide. He outlines this unfamiliar environment, provides a thorough description of its inhabitants, together with their strengths and weaknesses, as well as a comprehensive guide to actually enjoy ourselves while sleeping with the enemy.

Before you tell society to take its stiflingly crowded, single minded myopic existence and shove it, read this book. Follow it explicitly. Then go out and purchase as many bug zappers as possible and wait for the invasion.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful guide!.......2002-08-21

This is a very helpful book listing plants that deer prefer not to eat. Of course, there are no guarantees but the listings, plant descriptions and index should help just about everyone living in deer country.

4 out of 5 stars A great start for the beginning deer gardener.......2000-03-18

A major portion of Gardening in Deer Country is devoted to providing descriptions of deer resistant plants and their growing requirements. The novice gardener will find these descriptions extremely helpful. However, color pictures of the plants would be immensely helpful. The one thing I find annoying about this book is it defines the probability a plant may be eaten by deer as: Rarely, Seldom, Occasionally, Frequently or Absolutely NOT. I question the legitimacy of such detailed breakdowns, as deer are very similar to people regarding food. First, both people and deer have regional food preferences (e.g., Italian food verses Chinese). Deer in my neighborhood may love the same plant that deer in your neighborhood hate. Second, individual deer, like humans, have their own preferences. For example, I love garlic but my mother hates it. As such, it would be much more accurate and useful if the author categorized plants into one of three groups: Rarely, Occasionally and Frequently. This would also help eliminate discussions between confused gardeners and garden center staff trying to quantify the difference between rarely, seldom and, occasionally.

This book is the perfect companion to Deer Proofing Your Yard & Garden, by Rhonda Massingham Hart. The one area where Deer Proofing Your Yard & Garden is weak, plant descriptions, is the area where Gardening in Deer Country excels.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a way to allow all of us to live together peacefully.......1998-07-17

Gardening in Deer Country is a life savior. I was so frustrated with planning and planting my garden only to have it destroyed by the native deer. Now I have a way to live in peace and enjoy nature; I am guided to plants that are unappetizing to the deer yet pleasing to me. Thank goodness for the book of the season.

                      Book Description

Contrary gardener Gene Logsdon has found an imaginative way to introduce gardeners to a more total enjoyment of nature--fauna as well as flora. What gardeners consider pests (rabbits devouring petunias, deer browsing the morning glories), Logsdon views as just more of nature's wonders, and teaches us, intimately and lyrically, to live together with them in harmony. If you're not yet familiar with the wonderful musings of Gene Logsdon, this is a perfect introduction.

I appreciate Mr.Logsdon's writing abililty. In fact, I was enjoying the book immensely until I got to the part about killing the raccoon, which happens to be the animal I wanted to learn to get along with. I think the title is very misleading. I wanted to know how to get along with my backyard neighbors, and not by killing them. To top it all, he actually gave recipes for raccoon dishes. Like I said, it was quite enjoyable until this part, but I feel there are much more pleasant ways to get along with our backyard neighbors. I don't offend easily, but this title does not fit the entire contents of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Best if sipped like fine, Kentucky bourbon.......1999-11-19

Gene does a fine job wrestling with this immense topic. As a house owner on the remotest fringe of suburbia, I can attest to the accuracy of the observations in his book.

Wildlife in the Garden has many characteristics in common with Gene's other writing. Some of the most enjoyable lines are his observations on human nature. Another characteristic of Gene's writing is the density. He packs many observations, facts, vignettes in each essay. This is not pulp fiction that you can bolt down in an afternoon. It is best taken in small bites and savored. This book is likely to have a long tenure in our private Imhof memorial library.

Lest you think the book is perfect (By the way Gene, thanks for the check) I do have a few *minor* quibbles.

A bibliography would have been a fine addition.

Some of the material seems to be a bit elementary. Many people who are starting to landscape for wildlife want a paint-by-numbers approach. Gene probably had to do that to serve their needs.

Gene tends to be a bit emphatic about The Right Way To Do Things, but that will only bother the feeble-minded. (I won't let it bother me. I won't let it bother me. I won't let it bother me.)

This book was first published in 1983. Gene's writing style has changed in that time. The book reads more smoothly when taken in sips and nibbles. But that is perfectly OK because this is the kind of book that wants to be read slowly.

Let me emphasize that these are *minor* quibbles and I enjoyed the book.

(Final note for those who are hooked up to public sewerage, the septic tank was invented by an engineer named Imhof)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Documentation of Anglo-Irish War.......2007-09-17

Most certainly one of the best books pertaining to the troubles from 1916-1922 to have survived over the years.
Dan Breen in great detail describes his ascendancy to the top rung of the organization then known as the Irish volunteers (Later the IRA) in his native county Tipperary and the ensuing life on the run, the inevitable price to be paid for his part in the Soloheadbed Ambush in 1919, which arguably launched the Anglo-Irish War. His description of some of the leading characters of the day, most notably Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera, are as valuable as his tragic insights into the Civil War following the Peace Treaty of 1921, including his tireless efforts to bring peace between both the Free State and the Republicans.
I have an extensive library that includes masterpieces by Ernie O'Malley, Tom Barry, and Pat Deasy, among others, but I still believe this might be the best account yet, always worth re-reading.

                        4 out of 5 stars Beats Micheal Collin's story.......1999-03-19

This is a good book and helps you understand much of how the Irish war for independence was gotten off the ground. For those interested in this period in Irish history it offers a unique insight from a hero of epic proportions. Some scenes from the book sound like they belong in a Hollywood script more than a true historic account and yet, that is what this book truly is. A must read for those interested in the struggle for Irish freedom.
