5 out of 5 stars Must Read for All Prospective and Current Iggy Caretakers.......2007-08-04

There is a reason that many reptile rescues require iguana adopters to purchase this book. Melissa Kaplan's book is the bible for iguana care. If you read this book and follow it's instructions, your little green friend will live a long and healthy life! The book is also extremely useful if you are debating getting an iguana. You should definitely read it before bringing one home (the level of care an iguana requires might discourage you from getting one).

2 out of 5 stars Generalizations and exaggerations.......2006-01-31

"most", "some"... Facts need to be added to support her views, which is what her writings come down to... her views. Stick with other books if you are looking for the way to properly care for your little green friend. Check out 'Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual by James W., III Hatfield' Hatfield relies less on shock value and exaggerations, facts are important.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for every iguana owner.......2006-01-25

I have had my green iguana for three years and it seems I never stop learning when it comes to whats best for her. I really wasn't aware how poor of care she was receiving until I bought this book. It's helped me help her so many times, and opened my eyes to details I was ignorant about before.

This book is easy to read and understand. The way the topics are divided make it easy to reference anything you want. Though it's not meant to be read cover to cover, I did so anyway.

Melissa Kaplan knows what she's talking about.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Ig Owners & Ig Owners To Be.......2005-09-27

Excellent information written concisely and with a sense of humor by someone who truly knows, loves, and admires the species.

5 out of 5 stars Quality & Value.......2003-06-05

Living in the Florida Keys we have dealt extensively with discarded Iguanas - perhaps 15 or more. People buy them, and get rid of them constantly - and down here, in the semi-tropics, they can survive (with difficulty)in the wild.
With all the iguana problems we have encountered good information is a necessity, & we have purchased many iguana books including Hatfield's "Green Iguana, the Ultimate Owners Guide" (a great book, but we still prefer Kaplan's "Iguanas for Dummies").
If you still want addtional technical data you can add "What's Wrong with My Iguana" by John Rossi M.A., D.V.M. and "Understanding Reptile Parasites" by Roger Klingenberg D.V.M.
Kaplan's book is based on research & a lot of personal experience. It is thorough, and her experience shows through - there are tidbits of information that have been useful to us that we have not found elsewhere. She has long maintained a caring website to help iguana owners and potential iguana buyers - not just to sell books. And the price of this book is reasonable.
By all means get a good book like Hatfield's or Kaplan's - preferably before you get an iguana. Even if the book talks you out of getting an ig for a pet it will be well worth the price. Proper care for an iguana involves a devoting a lot of time and spending a lot of money. The cost of the animal is nothing in comparison, and they are far more complex to care for than a dog, cat, or hamster. Judging from the number of abandoned iguanas in the Florida Keys a huge number of people do not bother to inform themselves and the animals suffer. It may not be entirely their fault. Many pet stores do not seem to offer the best books or accurate information - often they just want to sell a hapless reptile, and make a few bucks on inadequate (sometimes dangerous) supplies and food. They frequently give bad advice.
Whatever book you get you will still need to get a good experienced herp vet., and they are hard to find. Things go wrong with iguanas that are not covered with specificity in any of these books. We have been unfortunate enough to encounter some of them.

1 out of 5 stars Turtles & Tortoises for Dummies.......2007-03-16

I never received this book. Sent an email to seller never received an answer. Bad, bad!!!! Very disappointed. Yes, it is paid for!

5 out of 5 stars Great beginners book........2005-11-15

Clear, easy-to-read, easy-to-follow information about turtles and tortises. I purchased this book after becoming a guardian to an Arizona desert tortise. These creatures are protected and found in small areas of Nevada, California and Arizona, and there is not much information about them to be found. This book had more useful information than I received from any other source.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2004-06-17

Given that this book is obviously aimed at the beginner it would make sense for the book to offer decent info for commonly available species; mud and musk turtles, painted turtles, cooters, sliders, maybe Russian and Greek tortises, salcuttas, and some others. However, it doesn't.

The book focuses an insane amount on the large, expensive (often over 1,000US), rare-in-captivity tortises like the Galapagos and aldabra tortise, which are exactly what the novice keeper wont' likely be buying. The common, affordable, and easier to keep turtles and tortises are given short shrift in this book. They may get a line or two, but that's about it.
Furthermore, what information is given seems suspect; reccomended cage sizes tend to be on the small side, temps can be off, as can humidity. It's really not worth having--I threw my copy away.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2004-03-17

I purchased this book thinking (hoping) it would be the excellent source of information it is advertised to be; it is not.

I am very experienced in keeping all kinds of companion animals. As a rule, when I think I might want to add a new species to my household, I research the critter in question with great care. I purchased this book prior to getting my first tortoise. At the same time, I began researching my chosen species on the internet. Based upon what I have learned on the net and in speaking with tortoise keepers & breeders via e-mail/telephone and in person at "reptile expos", the information in this book is at best dated and over simplified and at worst may be dangerous to your pet.

The kindest thing I can say about this book is that it is poorly organized. This alone makes it difficult to formulate an understanding of tortoise culture. Further, the author often contradicts herself, causing the reader to question whether they are misunderstanding the text as they go.

Turtles and torts are highly specialized - they do not adapt to us as dogs or cats do. We MUST adapt to them and fulfill their very specific needs completely. Please research your chosen species very carefully before you purchase a turtle or tort!

If you simply must buy this book, please do not use it as your only or best source of info.

2 out of 5 stars Great for box and tortoise lovers.......2004-01-12

The author was very knowledgeable about her favorites: box turtles and (large) tortoises. That's all well and good, but... None of these turtles are suited for indoor keeping! I would expect that most prospective or current turtle keepers want or have smaller turtles, and it would have been nice to get more detailed info about them. If you can keep your chenolians in an outdoor habitat, BUY THIS BOOK. Otherwise, find another.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good general guide for pet herps.......2007-08-01

This book does quite a good job at covering a lot of great information about herps (turtles, tortoises, snakes, lizards, frogs, toads, newts, salamanders, caecilians, and even the non-pet herps crocodilians, amphisbaenians, and Rhynchocephalia) and things that ever herper needs to know to have a happy healthy pet. Topics include keeping your herps in an outdoor cage, tank, or pool, what kinds of plants to put inside of an indoor terrarium, who eats what (or, more likely, who eats whom), breeding, how to determine a herp's sex, zoos with great herp collections, how to get involved in one's local community, common health problems, how to transport one's herps, and what to do if you need to get rid of your herp. In the middle of the book is a section of nice color photos of some of the more popular varieties of pet herps, such as the painted turtle, corn snake, water dragon, veiled chameleon, horned frog, and fire-bellied newt. It finishes with an appendix running down the basics (diet, behavior, origins, etc.) of some of the more popular herps, such as the kingsnake, Greek tortoise, fire salamander, leopard gecko, bumblebee poison dart frog, and aquatic caecilian. The only shortcomings I noticed in the book were that there isn't a huge amount of species-specific information (though this book is only meant as a general guide, not something covering every single thing about all of the herps in the pet market; that's what species-specific books are for!) and that it recommended the pet store as the place to get frozen/thawed prekilled rodents for one's snake. It would have been better had they talked about some of the businesses who breed rodents and then euthanise them before freezing them and selling them in bulk, such as RodentPro, Mice on Ice, and Mice Direct. Unless I knew that a pet store had gotten their prekilled prey from such a reputable company, I wouldn't exactly trust their prekilled rodents, given how a lot of pet stores aren't known for top-notch treatment of their animals! It also would've been nice had they mentioned some of the companies that breed and sell insects for lizards and amphibians, like Cricket Ranch and Timberline Live Pet Foods. But overall, this is a really good guide to get the first-time herper started, and as one reads more literature on the subject and interacts with fellow herpers, one will learn about the things that this book overlooked or didn't go into a lot of detail about.

5 out of 5 stars very good, about 4.5 stars.......2006-04-11

very thorough and also humorous. one small disadvantage, species specific information is very limited(though snake selection is acceptable). this, and a species specific book will give you a perfect referance with a new pet.

4 out of 5 stars Solid information to get you started.......2005-10-22

We have a California kingsnake and two leopard geckos. We've gotten some other books on these reptiles, but for basic advice the "Dummies" book is the best so far. Very good at explaining what each species is like so you can get an idea of how the animal would work out for you.

            5 out of 5 stars Nothing Compares!.......2007-03-02

Like all botanical Encyclopedias, this can't possibly contain all the varieties available, but almost all are represented in some form. This book is responsible for spurring my obsession with Irises so I can't vouch for its significance to the experienced gardener, but I haven't found anything that compares. The text is very brief and concise, but provides a good overview of each Iris family (I didn't know there were so many!).

If you are an Iris enthusiasts or want to become one, this is the book to own!

4 out of 5 stars Stunning book, I'm looking for even more!.......2006-07-11

I've read three iris books back to back looking for specific information:

I want to know about hybridizing bearded irises and this book gives a very good general overview. Better than the other books, but still fairly general in cross-making information.

I also used it to look for answers to some weird occurrences in my Irises this year and found no description of the symptoms in the pests/diseases part. The other books didn't have the problem either so I am frustrated, but perhaps shouldn't blame this book for not providing the answer.

This IS ABSOLUTELY the best book on the market on the subject though, better, fuller, glossier, and more comprehensive than the rest I've seen. I was a little surprised to see it is mostly a listing of irises in cultivation which is an ambitious undertaking.

I would caution against using any book to identify unknown Irises as there are just too many cultivars to be sure you've got the right name. However, I absolutely would (and did) use it to verify the identities of named Irises with a few nametags that got mixed up.

I would've given it 5 stars if there had been a little more information on the aforementioned items. I perhaps owe it 5 stars simply for the amazing job they did on the species Irises which no other book comes close to matching.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference book.......2006-07-02

This book has wonderful pictures and descriptions, perfect for identifying unknown iris in the garden.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic amusement if handled correctly.......2007-02-02

This wonderful (and frightening) list of words is not merely of interest to linguists, philologists or amateur language lovers. It also gives some insight into the world of men who wielded power in Western Asia, including Iran, parts of Central Asia and by implication the Indian Ocean as well. How do pre-national military formations function practically (aka how much Arabic or Persian do I need to know if I am a newly converted Anatolian Greek in 1350 and want to become a mercenary at a rich lord's court)?

However, I would not buy the book if you have to survive on a grad student budget. Try to get access to it at an academic library and enjoy it first. It is a great way to spend your time, provided you have enough historical imagination. I should note, however, that if your favorite way of making war includes bombing civilians, you should try a computer war game instead.
