4 out of 5 stars Very educational !!!!!.......2007-01-19

As a bird fan, I really wanted to get this to help me learn as much as possible about feathered friends, and it sure does deliver! One disappointment however, it left out some species that summer here in the last frontier!!Other than that, this is a great book! Good for yourself,or as a gift for that birder you know!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Book for all Birders.......2007-01-03

I discovered this book by accident and found it very useful. I am a relative novice at birding and this book has really helped make me a better birder. The Top 20 Rules of the Bird Identification Game make this book well worth the price. But it isn't just for beginners. I bought a copy for a friend who is a very accomplished birder and she has found it very useful in identifying gulls. For me the sparrows are difficult and this book has made it easier. I can actually identify many of those LBJ's (little brown jobs).

5 out of 5 stars Identify Yourself.......2006-08-31

I've been looking for a book like this for a while. I highly recommend it to anyone that needs a little bird identification help and is confused on similar looking species. It offers many useful tips and a lot of great advice. This is not the book, however, if you're looking to identify flycatchers or specific shorebirds. Besides that, though, this is a fantastic book.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth it, and great value as well........2006-05-22

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to get into the details of bird ID. Pitfalls and difficult problems are emphasized. For example, there is a whole chapter on how to distinguish the immature bald eagle from the golden eagle. Some of those tricky problems seem to be glossed over in the usual field manual, only to present unexpected difficulty later. This is not an introductory text, but it is an easy and entertaining read. Well worth it, and different than the vast majority of texts.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Beginner and Intermediate Birders.......2006-02-25

This is an excellent book for sorting out and identifying those tricky birds that are difficult to distinguish from one another. It is aimed at beginners and intermediates, but still provides helpful points for advanced birders. Julie Zickafoose does an beautiful job at the illustrations, and Bill Thompson clearly outlines the differences between similar species. This is a good book to own if you are having troubles with identifications.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for all bird watchers.......2006-08-19

I am a budding bird-watching enthusiast and this is the first book I have purchased. I love it! I do wish it covered more birds, but the descriptions of the birds it does include are very informative. The photographs are some of the best I've seen!!! The CD is also great for beginners because you never really realize how many of those calls are familiar to you until you hear them with a name. I know now there are Baltimore Orioles near my house (though I've never seen them) because I hear that very distinct call all the time! Now I've put out special food for them and I'll just have to wait and see!!! I recommend this book and CD to all - especially beginners like myself!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Beginning Birders.......2006-08-15

As a new initiate into the world of birding, I found this book and audio cd to be very helpful in identifying bird songs. A numbered list of cd tracks is provided in the book, enabling the listener to skip to the songs they want to hear on the cd. The book is informative and includes beautiful photographs of each species. I love it and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Photos, Info and song...........2006-03-20

I am new to serious birdwatching, but already own half a dozen books on North American birds. I find this book and companion CD especially nice because of it's portability and ease of use. The photographs are clear, and the information concise. The songs of the birds are likewise, and if you have a cat, you will amuse them along with yourself as you listen...

5 out of 5 stars Great beginners bird guide.......2002-04-15

Though I was surprised to receive such a small sized book, the picures are beautiful and the lessons very helpful. I am new to birding and have no doubt I can improve my bird identification with the help of this CD and guidebook. I do wish the veery and phoebe were included. Great book for anyone wishing to learn which bird goes with which song. So much fun! Would highly recommend. I'm thrilled.

5 out of 5 stars Great Photos, Great Gift, Great Intro to Common Birds.......2002-01-20

"Common Birds and their Songs" is like a mini-coffeetable book (though it is softbound) with beautiful color photographs by Marie Read, and a page of text on each of 50 birds, which are grouped into 5 categories: Backyard/City, Countryside, Wetland, & Forest. The CD is a straightforward presentation from each species.

This makes a great gift for the bird/nature lover and its worth getting as many of Lang Elliott's tapes are hard to find.
Also recommended: "Know Your Bird Sounds Vol. I & II" and "Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs".

Another bizarrely humorous book from the delightfully eccentric mind of Burton Silver and company, perhaps best known for their Why Cats Paint series and related books.

The full-color illustrations of splattered bird droppings in this handy glove compartment guide enable the motorist to identify quickly which species created which display on the windshield. The excreta of a wide variety of avian species are fully described with detailed notes on the animal's food, geographic location, and the best methods of starting a collection. An invaluable companion for all those who wish to learn more about birds and what they do. Inhabitants of Europe may wish to search their used bookstores for a copy of The Comprehensive Field Guide to the Ornithological Dejecta of Great Britain and Europe which is, unfortunately, out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Now let's get down to some serious bird identification!.......2005-10-19

With all the great Field Guides around it is becoming quite simple to identify a new bird. You are out birding and see a bird sitting atop a tree. You line it up in your bins, take note of the field marks, check your trusty guide, and Presto! You have just found a Painted Bunting. Now,let's crank it up a notch. You're driving along a back road, and SPLAT!!What was that? Now you're in the big league of bird identification. Here's where this book comes to the rescue.Yep! now you can stop the car and check out the characteristics of the splat and determine what bird paid you a visit. This book describes what matches your splat."Small, sometimes only the size of a grain of rice. The coiled, rather gaudy and squishy nucleus is delightfully encapsulated in a semi-opaque,frothy envelope."What you got here,my friend, is also a Painted Bunting;but indentified in a whole new way! However if this is what you got,"Messy and generous, with a definite tendency to splood. The thick, creamy envelope sometimes contains solids of bilious yellow (partly digested gristle and fat) that add a sprightly dash of color to the splay."Check the book, what you got this time is our old friend, the Turkey Vulture.
So,if you want to improve your image with your birding friends get hold of this book and amaze them at the next SPLAT.
Oh yeah;another thing, just in case that splat was with the compliments of a bat instead of a bird;this book will also help you make the differentiation.
A great gift for you or your birdwatching friend.

4 out of 5 stars one-trick pony, but a very amusing trick.......2002-11-23

This is a short guidebook to birds with its smart tongue planted deep in its cheek. It's copiously illustrated with photographs of bird droppings (splays) on car windshields and instructions on how to tell what
species of bird they came from. As the authors say: "A knowledge of each splay is essential to fully describe and understand the variations in ornithological dejecta." It's largely by taking the subject exactly
that faux seriously, but then subverting it with the choice of topic and some very funny invented vocabulary, that they elicit laughs. Here, for instance, is one of their terms of art and its definition:

audibon: Soft sound made by avian dejecta as it strikes a windshield and forms a splay. Audi (l) sound, bon (fr) good, literally, good sound.

The book's kind of a one-trick pony, but a very amusing trick.

GRADE: B+

5 out of 5 stars VERY FUNNY - TERRIFIC GIFT BOOK.......2001-07-30

I'd never heard of this book (1991) til 2001. It's incredibly funny. Written in a pseudo-audobon style, each page has a perky 1x1" picture of the species of interest, and a sharp, color 4x4" photo of its supposed bird splat. (whether globby, loose, white, gray, yellow, small, large, starburst-like, etc). Very very funny.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2006-11-05

Common Birds of North America (Midwest edition) is an excellent resource for identifying all the birds I see in my Wisconsin home yard. One page per bird provides a good and simple overview to identify the birds and how to attract them to my back yard. It explains the differences between male and female coloring, nesting habits, food preferences, migration, etc. My book is all dog eared now from use. I bought one for mom for Christmas along with a birdhouse and feeder.

5 out of 5 stars Common Birds of North America.......2005-07-24

After you locate the bird you see using the Peterson Flash Guide, then you will want to utilize this book so that you can find out all the specifics about the bird, like what they eat, nesting and what time of year they are likely to be observed in your area.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource for birdwatching enthusiasts!.......2002-03-29

Filled with exquisite full-color illustrations, Common Birds Of North America: Midwest Edition by James Wilson (Missouri Department of Conservation State Ornithologist) is an excellent guidebook for birdwatchers of all experience levels. Each species features a fine full-page portrait showing male and female specimens if the plumage is very different, and a one-page summary of the bird's habitat, call, typical behavior, and more. A concise, elegant guide, Common Birds Of North America: Midwest Edition is an invaluable resource for birdwatchers.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Natural History of the Midwest's Common Birds.......2001-11-20

Wow. Having watched Jim doodle birds and landscapes in pen and ink during staff meetings at the conservation department, I should not have been surprised at the accuracy and quality of his illustrations in this book. Aside from the gorgeous images of the birds and their settings, Jim also manages to capture elements of the birds' songs and behavior in easy-to-read text. It's a great book for people who are interested in learning how bird species make their livings as well as how to identify them. I bought one for my Mom (who loves to watch her bird feeder visitors), and she loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Great "out of your window" guide- even for novices.......1998-12-30

This is a very handy guide, simply and clearly laid out, it includes sections for the non-ornathologist (like myslef) with titles like "red birds" and "small brown birds". It contains hints on attracting birds to your yard and feeder, and it has a wealth of clear colored illustrations. Being a "Teal" myself I appreciate this. My aunt gave me this book, then she wanted to get it's name again later, so I am returning the favor and ordering one for her:)

                    Book Description

A Turning Point in Mamluk History deals with the process of decline of the Mamluk state (1250-1517). Its main thesis is that the origins of this process are to be found in the third reign of al-Nasir Muhammad Ibn Qalawun, more specifically in the changes he effected in the Mamluk system. The Mamluk army was the first to be confronted with these changes, whose impact on the social and political life of the Mamluk elite was already felt during al-Nasir's own lifetime. The author follows their course of development to the end of autonomous Mamluk rule and reveals the transformation they wrought in the Mamluk code of values and political concepts. A final chapter deals with the overall economic decline of the Mamluk state and establishes the link of its various causes--demographic decline, monetary crises, the collapse of agriculture and industry--with Mamluk government misrule. Here it is al-Nasir's expenditure policy and its repercussions on the economy which reveal his reign as a point of no return.
