Review For the confused consumer........2003-04-01
You may find it strange that this book either recieves a five star or a one star rating with very little in between. Final Hope is an excellent book on handling aggression in pet dogs. That said, the ratings posted reflect a rift in philosophy of dog training techniques. Modern techniques involve gadgetry and food rewards - a Pavlovian behavior/reward system. Classic techniques engage the dog as a thinking animal, an animal that is capable of more than simple reactionary behavior. The training is based on building a relationship with the dog. To say that one philosophy is all "good" and the other all "bad" is too simple and shouldn't be debate here. As it pertains to this book, if you are working with a modern trainer who works with food and gadgets this is not the book for you. It will contradict everthing your being told by the trainer. If you are working in the relationship building, classic method, this book will enhance your understanding of process.
One of the more dangerous books out there.......2000-10-12
As a professional trainer and behavioral counseler (graduated from San Francisco Dog Training Academy's Counseling Certificate course with honors), I find the information in this book inaccurate and appalling. The author has a garbled understanding of true behavior modification techniques and actively advocates a method that is recognized in my profession as likely to exacerbate the problem (referring to his recommendation to 'flood' the fearfully aggressive dog). His belief that simple obedience (taught in a forceful, confrontative manner) can 'fix' an emotional state such as aggression is simplistic at best. A professional who understands animal learning laws and behavior modification techniques whould immediately recognize that this book is one for the burn pile. This book earned one star only because I wasn't given a 'no star' option.
Caution - Inappropriate Advice in this book.......2000-10-10
As a professional dog trainer that specializes in behavior (approximately 85-90 % of my business is dealing with aggression of all sorts) I have to advise that people skip this book. I can foresee people using this book and getting hurt by their dogs and/or making their dog's aggression problems worse.

As a professional dog trainer and behaviorist I frequently recieved requests for literature on aggressive dogs. I came across this book, and I now require all my aggressive dog clients to read this book. It is the most complete book I have seen on this subject. It includes all types of aggression. It is also very well written. It can help even the most aggressive dogs.
The author needs to bone up on behavior modification.......1999-11-03
This book is one of the most dangerous books out there. It simplifies the motivation and mechanisms of aggression and buys into the anthropomorphic view that aggressive dogs are 'bad' and just need to know who's 'boss'. The author needs to learn about learning principles and stop fooling the public into thinking he knows of which he speaks. He is related to Carol Lea Benjamin through marriage. It is obvious from his book that he is a rank novice when it comes to aggression. It is amazing that with all the brilliant minds out there, Dunbar, Donaldson, Pryor, Rogersen, etc, etc, that Stephen Joubert could think he could write a book on aggression that would not be scrutinized.

Waste of Money.......2007-06-22
I do not find this book helpful at all. Most designs are just one page. There is a rather fuzzy architect drawing, one TINY picture of some obscure part of the garden ( one picture is actually just a close up of a small portion of a birch tree!), and a 2-3 paragraph blurb. That is all there is to see of any one design. As a professional gardener, I do not find any of this helpful. The detail is hardly clear enough to decipher. The sample picture is useless, and the script is not enough to be of use. I am sending it back.

This book is great for garden ideas. Plenty of interesting designs shown in graphic form, plus an artist's illustration. Lists of plant material have to be ordered. Some may find this a shortcoming. In our case, it's great as most of those lists contain plant material that is inappropriate for our region.

While this book does not have comprehensive information on each plan, it still provides some interesting ideas. Additional information such as comprehensive blueprints as well as plant and material lists customized to your region is available for purchase, but I found this useful without having to order the additional material. The different plans provide a wealth of ideas and act as a catalyst in designing your own landscape. You won't get substantial information on the plant life itself, in fact in most cases you don't get anything but a picture, but this allows you to substitute a more appropriate item suited to your tastes and region. This is by no means a "how-to design a landscape" book, but if you are looking for some ideas and basic landscape plans then this book delivers.
This book is a rip-off!.......2004-06-22
I bought this book expecting the 50+ garden design plans they promised. Well, they had 50+ garden designs, all right. You got six for free and you had to pay at least $10.00 apiece for the remaining plans. It is essentially a catalog of plans and you buy the ones you want.
Not worth the money!!!!

The beautiful photographs in this book will provide much inspiration for those looking to design a path or walkway, but don't look for a "how to" set of instructions. The author provides some general guidelines and points to consider, but seems to believe that one should leave paving to the professionals.
Inspirational & beautiful garden path ideas.......2000-05-02
This book is about the role of paving in adding beauty and functionality to the garden. The multitude of materials and patterns presented should yield something easily adaptable to each reader's own situation.
Many of the examples shown are in large formal gardens, but the ideas are viable on a smaller scale as well. There are also a number of projects for smaller patios and walkways.
Materials used include stone, concrete, brick, terracotta, wood and loose aggregates. Design, installation and the construction of steps are covered.
This book is a visual delight for the color photos of beautiful gardens incorporating paved features on every page. These are an inspiration to any gardener.

Truly Simple Designs.......2000-06-05
The Backroad Home serves as a source book of building plans for all kinds of small buildings. Each of the designs has an illustration along with a floor plan. Text is limited to a few sentences about the design and the address or web site to request catalogs or full plans from. I would have liked more text. I wanted to know more about the design styles. Many of the designs are based on regional architecture like the Amisquam Salt Box or the Pine Island Cottage. While others could be imagined in a field almost anywhere in the country. There are also plenty of barn and outbuilding plans.
A lot of the dwellings do not even qualify for the term house. They are cabins with very small floor plans and only one door. But other plans have three or even four bedrooms and aren't what I would call small.
In the back of the book are even more design sources and a Country Building Directory containing suppliers for things like weathervanes, sundials, antique hardware and brass and copper lighting fixtures. There is a convenient index in the back for referring to specific architectural styles.
I've been searching for plans for small houses for several years. This book has given me access to many new sources. I've finally found a house that's the right size for me and I might even be able to afford it!
First a dream, then a plan.......2000-04-30
Buying country land is the beginning of a great adventure. During the year that I recommend you observe and inventory natural conditions before you build, you will have time to decide not only where your buildings will be planted but what their form will be. Here is a book that extols traditional styles and connects you to the architects who have adapted those styles to modern codes. Architect/editor Berg has found seventeen designers who are unabashed proponents of traditional style, most of whom live the country life, so they have first-hand appreciation for what works and looks best. Each offers mail-order plans for simple but elegant inexpensive country homes and outbuildings. Here are drawings of floor plans and exteriors of 86 designs in all, from a 144-square-foot cabin to a farmhouse and Southern-style cottage with wraparound porch, each of 2,000 square feet. This is a sampler; I checked out the Web sites of the designers and found that they offer many more designs. Most offer plan catalogs.
In addition to sourcing working architects' plans, Berg connects the reader to alternate plan sources, including log homes, timber frame, historic, magazine and Cooperative Extension plans, which are hard to find but nearly free. There is also a Resources section of building codes, building book catalogs and on-line resources, plus other books on country building. The Country Building Directory has entries from Acorn Forged Iron to West Coast Weather Vanes. Happy country planning, building and living.

If you are a lover of old houses, their uniqueness, wonderful style and design... If you live in an old house, maybe want to add on or are going to be moving into an older home... If you are an architect, designer, builder or contractor... Or, if you are thinking of building and find yourself sick and tired of the please-not-one-more-cathedral-ceilinged-media-room-approach to home design...
Then look no further - Don Berg's "Backroad Home" is the light at the end of the tunnel. The whole front of this wonderful book provides inspiring, right on the mark designs, blueprints and resorces for older houses, cottages, cabins, backbuildings, barns, sheds and even a charming out-door shower! The back is filled with a perfectly edited compendium of resources for old house design, building and materials complete with addresses, phone #s and yes, when available, email. My copy, and it's sister "American Country Building Designs" both purchased just a few months ago, are already dog-eared, marked up, and coffee cup ringed and we have yet to move into our 1850's farmhouse! Great reading, great writing and great fun. Thank you Mr. Berg for writing a book for "the rest of us"

Each Rabbinic document, from the Mishnah through the Bavli, defines itself by a unique combination of indicative traits of rhetoric, topic, and particular logic that governs its coherent discourse. But narratives in the same canonical compilations do not conform to the documentary indicators that govern in these compilations, respectively. They form an anomaly for the documentary reading of the Rabbinic canon of the formative age.
To remove that anomaly, this project classifies the types and forms of narratives and shows that particular documents exhibit distinctive preferences among those types. This detailed, systematic classification of Rabbinic narrative supplies these facts concerning the classification of narratives and their regularities: [1] what are the types and forms of narrative in a given document? [2] how are these distinctive types and forms of narrative distributed across the canonical documents of the formative age, the first six centuries C.E.?
The answers for the documentary preferences are in Volumes One through Three, for the Mishnah-Tosefta, the Tannaite Midrash-compilations, and Rabbah-Midrash-compilations, respectively. Volume Four then sets forth the documentary history of each of the types of Rabbinic narrative, including the authentic narrative, the maŒaseh and the mashal. How the traits of the several types of narratives shift as the respective types move from document to document is spelled out in complete detail. This project opens an entirely new road toward the documentary analysis of Rabbinic narrative. It fills out an important chapter in the documentary hypothesis of the Rabbinic canon in the formative age.
