Includes contradicting info and inaccurate info!.......2007-01-21
The inaccurate info in this book is enough to cancel out it's value almost altogether, in my opinion. The fact that it includes information which I know to be false(both from my own experience and from the multitude of other resources which contradict it) made it difficult to determine whether or not to believe any info in it that I had not previously heard or read. And the book isn't even that old! It should have much better info than it does!
For instance on one page it says cat and dog food can be given as treats to rats, yet on a different page it lists them both as "harmful foods". The previous reviewer covers most of the other inaccuracies. The only thing I really found valuable in the book was the descriptions of how rats live in the wild and what colony life is like. But I haven't read the same info anywhere else, so I have no way of verifying whether it is accurate or not.
Bottom line: buy a different rat guide, this one is NOT worth the money or the risk of following bad/inaccurate advice!
There is alot of bad mixed with good advice in this book.......2000-05-18
This book is a mix of bad and good rat advice. I will first list the good things about this book. #1 The description of the life of wild rats in their colonies. It's accurate. #2 The pictures : They are by far the best pictures of pet rats I've seen in a book, (so far) #3 It has some OK to Good info on caring for rats but there are other books with much better information like Debbie Ducommuns Rats! #4 The book stresses the need to have more than just one rat. Thats important. The problems with this book are: #1 The author makes blanket statements against any breeding of rats totally not taking into account the fact that there are people who are responsible breeders out there. The author also doesn't explain what needs to be done to responsibly breed, such as before you even think of breeding make sure that you can place all the babies in loving homes, things like that. #2 The author recommends pine bedding, which is well known to have ill effects on rats just like cedar does. #3 On page 36, her logic as to why the life expectency of rats probably can't be increased is muddled and odd. She also states that previously the natural life expectency of rats was thought to be six to seven years. When did anyone think the life expectency of rats was that long? , I've read most books on rats and they all say the average life expectency of rats are two to three years, while some may live to four or five. Anyway this book should be bought with caution, there is alot of good info mixed with bad in this book

Wonderful For Novice and Experienced Rat Fanciers!.......2001-04-15
I have read the book The Proper Care Of Fancy Rats (t.f.h.) - repeatedly - and have found the information to be invaluable. It covers basic care, illnesses, varieties and standards, breeding and some of the basics of rat genetics. It also includes a lot of beautiful full color photos. I've read a few other books on rodent care, none of which were as detailed as this (those books all ended up in a used book store). I would HIGHLY suggest that every rat owner purchase this book and keep it handy. Its easy to follow and covers all the bases!
The "Encyclopedia Rattica".......2000-10-19
More than just a guide to the proper care of rats, Nick Mays' excellent book is also a history of human-rat relations, an introduction to rat genetics, and a full color guide to many of the breeds of "fancy" rats. Well-written and logically organized, this is the best kind of reference book: both informative and fun to read. Although the book's historical survey of the "rat fancy" concentrates primarily on the United Kingdom, this fascinating story will surely be appreciated by rat lovers throughout the world.
Mays not only creates an accurate and affectionate portrait of the domesticated rat, but he also creates a comparable portrait of those rat fanciers who have for generations taken these intelligent and personable creatures into our homes and hearts. This book is a tribute to the strength of the bonds that can exist between members of different species.
The best rat book in the universe 8/8/99.......1999-08-09
I had at one time purchised This book, And i didn't have the money to keep it so I took it back. Days after, I yearned to have it back. So I went back to the store were I had bought it and they told me they Didn't have it anymore. I felt so sad, and up to this day I havn't been able to find it anywere. Now that I found it, I will be sure to buy it, and to keep it. I say it is the very most helpful, Wonderful book you could ever have on The Care and Keeping of Fancy rats. -Brie
Excellent book for fanciers!.......1999-05-25
The first time I read this book, I was astounded! Mr. Mays is a true expert, presenting the information in an easy to read, clear style. Where other authors have failed, Mr. Mays includes almost everything on breeding, illnesses, and showing. I highly recommend this book to a novice rat owner or shower. Good work, Mr. Mays!
A MUST HAVE FOR RAT OWNERS!.......1999-03-17
Nick has done it again! This outing proves to be his best, by far. Thoroughly readable and very enjoyable.

Book Description
William Coperthwaite is a teacher, builder, designer, and writer who for many years has explored the possibilities of true simplicity on a homestead on the north coast of Maine. In the spirit of Henry David Thoreau, Emily Dickinson, and Helen and Scott Nearing, Coperthwaite has fashioned a livelihood of integrity and completenessbuying almost nothing, providing for his own needs, and serving as a guide and companion to hundreds of apprentices drawn to his unique way of being.
A Handmade Life carries Coperthwaite's ongoing experiments with hand tools, hand-grown and gathered food, and handmade shelter, clothing, and furnishings out into the world to challenge and inspire. His writing is both philosophical and practical, exploring themes of beauty, work, education, and design while giving instruction on the hand-crafting of the necessities of life. Richly illustrated with luminous color photographs by Peter Forbes, the book is a moving and inspirational testament to a new practice of old ways of life.

Book Description
In 1968 two gay young men - one white, one black - quixotically decided to buy eighty backwoods acres in southern Mississippi, little realizing that they were embarking on the greatest adventure of their lives. Don Schueler's account of the twenty-five years that followed, during which he and Willie Brown transformed their "least worst land" into a wild Eden, is a modern saga by turns suspenseful, very funny, and deeply moving.

The Fullness of Time.......2005-10-20
Somehow it was fitting that I found this book sitting patiently among a thousand others in a second hand shop. The photo on the back, of an interracial gay couple, and that on the front, of the swampy sandhills of Mississippi, brought up visions of racism and homophobia in the rural deep South. After a few chapters, though, these stereotyped expectations gave way to a story unlike any other I've read. Don Schueler's unique and relentless focus on nature, his deft writing that switches from humor to suspense to tragedy in the turn of a page, the enduring scope of his chronicle - 27 years that witnessed 80 acres of logged countryside once again blooming and burning, building and blowing away - begets a book of life that speaks for the individual, the region, the planet.
From human neighbors Roddy Ray, Lurlee, and Hovit, to pet dogs Sammie and Schaeffer, to Fafnir the alligator, Griswold the baby owl, gopher tortoises, wood storks, cottonmouths, black widows and countless species of flowers and trees, A Handmade Wilderness leads the reader through land hunting and house building, tree planting and grave digging, from Hurricane Camille to the inauguration of the Willie Farrell Brown Nature Preserve, all the while spinning a tale of the seldom seen and sometimes forgotten fauna, flora, and men of The South.
the joy of contemplation.......2005-04-28
I've read, re-read and look forward to re-reading this book again just to savor the author's choice of words that he uses to weaves a tapestry of textures for the senses as he and his partner restore their "least worst" land to health over 20 years. He describes their joy and surprise of constantly making new discoveries, "it's like receiving lovely gratuitous gifts that you didn't even know you wanted." They "engaged in the contemplative exercise of watching" the effects of the wind blowing the grass, the texture of seasonal changes, marvelous sunsets, and wildlife, sometimes at arms reach. His descriptions bring back memories of enjoying my favorite, frequently, visited forests in a similar manner, wondering what new gift will be presented to me as I quietly listen to the sounds, feel the wind in my hair, and watch the shadows play with the sunbeams.

Even better than a walk in the woods..........2001-04-26
Very few books about nature can compete with time actually spent in nature. But this comes very close. Don Shuler tells the story of his 20+ year careful and loving relationship with an abused and exhausted piece of land in the Mississippi sand hills. His simple storytelling style makes vivid the plants, animals, birds and human beings that he finds in this special place. These encouters are so carefully described that I felt that I was experiencing them along with him. And I wanted very much to read all that he might have edited out of this volume. The book is sweet, poignant, and filled with an animist's sense of humility and wonder. I am very surprised it is not more widely known and up there with the A Sand County Almanac.
You'll Love It!.......2000-04-18
Why this book doesn't have a bigger following is beyond me. For anyone who's ever dreamed of owning a place in the country, this is a delightful, funny, informative and beautifully written book. Refreshingly, there's not a self-indulgent sentence in the entire text. Schueler delves into all facets of the city/suburban person's adjustment to country life. And because the memoir takes place over the course of 25 years, you get to see the impressive results of he and his partner's devotion to their land. I highly recommend it.
A thoroughly entertaining read........1998-12-13
For anyone searching for an entertaining book concerning nature with an amusing cast of characters both human and animal, A Handmade Wilderness fits the bill perfectly. Schueler is a fantastic story teller who is simultaneously funny and sincere about his mission - creating his own private utopia (on limited funds).

Cunyus observes everyday life occurences and sees God. His conversational writing style makes easy reading with an occasional profound truth jumping off the page.
Uplifting, funny, thought-provoking book".......1998-09-05
I've just finished reading "Handmade Christians," and it's definitely the kind of book I'll pass on to the others. Just reading the way Cunyus writes about his children is worth the purchase price. Some of his stories are truly outstanding.
The book is easy to digest, written in quick, two-page essay form. I recommend it very highly
Outstanding Book of Devotionals!.......1998-03-31
In this book, Dr. John Cunyus takes us beyond platitudes to the heart of Christian faith, in real-world terms. These brief, two-page meditations are often humorous, almost always right to the point, and quite original. Cunyus is not a "rote" thinker. He touches on topics as far afield as Indian Philosophy and AIDS, all in ways that uplift and inspire thought. All in all, this is a wonderful book!
Book Description
At the age of twenty-four, Barbara McLean and her husband, Thomas, decided to make their home in the country, near a village called Alderney in Grey County, Ontario. Together they became homeowners, farmers and, eventually, parents. They called their farm Lambsquarters, and they remain there today, twenty-six years later.
Life on a farm is a cycle of neverending work and discovery. Barbara and her family develop close relationships with every living thing: the hearty lambs and the fragile ones, the pumpkins and the potatoes and the hollyhocks in the barnyard, a family of bluebirds with problems of its own. What at first seems an intensely independent act — having one’s own land and space — becomes more meaningful once it becomes possible to connect with the larger community. Strong bonds are formed with neighbours who share both in grief and in celebration.
In striking portraits that are intensely intimate and yet reverberate with the universal hum of life, Barbara McLean describes the beauty, pain and wonder of the very essence of her surroundings and all who share them. We accompany her on a life’s journey, from a somewhat daunted dweller of a ramshackle farmhouse to a true inhabitant of a place.
Lambsquarters is for everyone who has dreamed of reconnecting with the land, as well as for those already well acquainted with rubber boots, chicken manure and the long trajectories of the rural school bus.

Book Description
These nineteen papers focus on the 1480-1610 period in England, France and Spain, offering a range of views on the use of images to spectacular ends in institutional form or in artifacts. After a recall of what neurophysiology says about brain treatment of images and what dominant codings of image may have been in Renaissance commonalty culture, four studies examine the way propagandistic imagery operates and its various effects, from benign submission to fierce opposition. Most studies, however, review accepted or moot points regarding interpretation of plays or staging. Interestingly, even if the papers build on different premises, they come up with fairly consistent findings about theatrical coding and image reception. While the selection helps see why study of popular shows - including plays - needs be rooted in the broadest cultural context, it also illustrates how basic similitudes in the strategic use, and the impact, of images underlie superficial generic differences.
