I had great hopes for this book, I was looking for great places to bring a dog. The descriptions invariably started out with some cute language then went on as if you didn't have a dog. I had the destinct impression that another book on parks was repurposed by just a few silly 'bring your tail-waggin' pooch ...' phrases tacked on to the front of each paragraph. The description for one park recommended bringing your kite. Can you imagine flying a kite with your dog on a leash?
Disappointing.

A nice, general guide, but no revelations.......2000-06-12

After a few happy discoveries of local parks where dog owners gathered and a few off-leash areas further away, we picked up this book in the hope that it would lead us to even greater adventures with our two dogs. The hotel listings are useful and it's nice to know where the parks are in areas one might visit, but the descriptions appear to be unresearched... the quaint doggie-friendly verbage the author uses repeats itself every 4th page and offers no insider perspectives. Some of the park suggestions seem outright ludicrous - parks we have visited that offer very little attraction, given neighborhood placement and lack of dog visitation. The book is also misleading in its size - its weight and thickness allude to a quantity of information that might be found in a Fodor's or Frommer's. The last 100 pages contain some information about traveling, some helpful but much obvious padding... you are told how to pack your own bags for human travel... she offers trivia such as "The Basenji is often called the barkless dog."

Save yourself the money - most hotel/motels allow pets, so just call and ask. As for the parks, you're best off grabbing a local map and inquiring at a local pet store where the best doggie hangouts are.

If you've ever driven 1.5 hours to a beautiful hiking spot only to be turned away because of your dog (as we have), you've wished for a book such as this one. This book makes a fine companion to the rest of your travel guides as a source of dog-friendly lodging, activities, and destinations.

Other reviews of Ms. Barish's books have cited out-of-date or incorrect contact information. While I haven't cross-referenced this book, it at the very least offers peace of mind to know that Fido will be welcome when you get there.

In addition to lodging and activity information, about 20% of the book is devoted to travel tips for being on the road with dogs, from first aid to keeping the maids dog-friendly. Really an excellent resource!

This book is a gem for teenage girls. So many of us are stressed out and need a release from their everyday life: cliques, school, continuous sporting activities, and the list goes on. This book was given to me as a present, but it was more than just a book, its the gift of relaxation, meditation, and a much more calm lifestyle. I reccomend this book for all teenage girls, its truly a book to live by.

I was given this book for my birthday last year and find myself returning to it constantly, loaning it to my friends, cousins, and even my mother. Written by a teenager, it applies to the feelings of girls today, and covers topics like meditation, yoga, aromatherapy, visualization, religion, philosophy, and following your passions. Instead of the normal "top ten beauty tricks" and "best clothes of the season," soul searching teaches females to find their inner beauty, and pamper their body instead of covering it with make-up.

This is a great book! Very different from all of those superficial magazines that don't give you any real advice on living your life. 'Soul Searching' is well written, well researched, well organized, has cute drawings, and gives great advice.

'Soul Searching' has great variety in its subjects. Sarah Stillman talks about karma, philosophy, religion, creating sacred spaces, feng shui, aromatherapy, yoga and massaging, spa treatments, relaxing and meditating, visualization, journal writing, dream interpretation, hobbies/passions, etc.

Any young girl can benefit from this refreshing book on how to find your soul.

This book is a rarity - one by a teenager who offers creative ideas for making sense of the joys and trials of adolescence. Sarah Stillman offers constructive tools and information to help teens make the most of this wonderful but sometimes confusing time in their lives. It is disturbing but telling that some would think a sixteen year old couldn't write a book like this. Underestimating the depth of adolescent personal development is an occupational hazard for adults and the reason this book by a teenager is so necessary. As a mother of three daughters this is a great way I can help them in their very personal but exciting journey to find themselves and set a positive pattern for personal growth throughout their lives.

I wrote this book in the early 90s after doing six years of research on the Aftereffects people develop after having a spiritual awakening. I had a powerful near-death experience in the mid 70s and was able to do my research in a University Medical School with wonderful colleagues like Bruce Greyson, MD and Ken Ring, PhD. This book has suddenly become popular because here we are 12 years later and people are talking about their spiritual experiences. And they want to know what all these new feelings and ideas are about. This book is about knowing we are all right and this is part of our evolution. Go to a traditional MD and you're going to be put on anti-depressants or even worse, anti-psychotics. That will stop the process that we've long waited to start.

Ahead of her time, this book came out in 1995. Whitfield explains in a practical way the experiential and heartfelt aftereffects of spiritual awakenings. Having a living connection to God or a Higher Power isn't as easy as we thought. Our newfound vulnerabilities in a world where God is an intellectual belief needs to be discussed. She lays the foundation for that clearly and shows us useful spiritual skills. Highly recommended!!

Barbara Harris Whitfield was in the perfect position as a researcher and near-death experiencer in the early 90s to understand what so many of us couldn't -- that we're not going crazy after a spiritual awakening! Instead of reading a dozen books to understand the after effects of awakening -- she has it all in one. The best part for me is that she doesn't separate herself as a researcher and clinician. She talks about all this first person. There have been many books written on this subject since hers was published in 1995, but Ms. Whitfield's is still the one that has it all under one cover.

Please Do Not Be Mislead By The Title!.......2000-05-09

If you're interested primarily in Near-Death Experiences, then do not go with this one. Mrs. Whitfield describes her two NDE's here, but this is for the most part a New Age compendium on how to increase your spirituality through the balancing of your chakras, handling psychic and kundalini energies, etc. There's nothing wrong with that except for perhaps misleading the public with the title such as it is. Mrs. Whitfield is an accomplished therapist and extemely well-studied in her work, but there are too many publications available like this one. For those wanting powerful testimonials from those who have had near-death experiences, you will NOT find it here. There are so many more books available from Amazon that carry NDE accounts that will change your life.

Powerful book, even for a tough skeptic like myself........2001-05-26

Before I compliment this book, let me state that I didn't buy everything in it, particularly when Mr. Scolastico indicates that he believes in past lives. Nonetheless, this book is filled with depth and brilliant insights into human emotion. Many of these insights are not particularly obvious and are explained in ways that we can really relate to. A sense of calm came over me while reading this book and I firmly believe there is a tremendous amount of wisdom within its pages. Before reading this book I was doubtful that I would get anything out of the book (it was recommended to me). Boy was I wrong. I learned more about the true relationship between stress and sadness from this book than any psychology book I have ever read. I highly recommend it for people that want a fresh perspective on life and death, even for those of you that are agnostics or atheists.

Deep and delightful.......2005-10-06

I found this book in my mother's house in Ballycastle, looking for something to read on the plane back to Santa Monica. I did not realise I had picked up one of the most incredible treasures of inspiration and joy that I have ever read. This book is packed full of the deepest and most wonderful delights. I have since bought 4 used copies to give to friends, the book seems to be out of print. One friend marked up his copy with the treasures he found, and I copied all these "arrows" to share with others and re-read myself.
