I found this book to be way too brief. It shows no depth when it comes to the information of Dobermans, and it quickly leaves the Doberman idea behind and just states basic first aid medication that every book of this same brand has. I bought this at a pet store when purchasing toys for my own Doberman. There was obviously no real, genuine thought put into this book, and I myself, though unarticulate and not at all skilled in writing, could display more quality information instead of a brief overview of a Doberman. I personally would not have purchased this book if I had even skimmed through the pages.

Because of the outrageous profit margin, this is another "make a quick buck" dog book that has saturated the shelves of our innocent pet stores everywhere. The text reads as if it were cut and pasted from a sixties encyclopedia entry, with "your Doberman" inserted instead of "your dog". There isn't ANY uniqueness, ingenuity, nor insight between the covers of this book; Inane prattle, serving only to reinforce the ego and purse of the "published" author, not the education of the starved masses.

If you know you want a Doberman, skip this book.......2002-10-29

Rather small, it barely skims the surface of what an owner needs to know: is a dobe the right dog for you, food, bedding, accessories, temperament. You won't get much else out of it. If someone's on the fence about whether or not to get a doberman, this book MIGHT be worth buying.

I found the information presented was good and well thought out. I think this book is more applicable to the potential owner then the current owner, because of the training methods supported in the book. this may be due to when the book was written, but does not jive with most of the current literature that I have been reading.

This book needs a proofreader!.......2007-07-23

Do not use this book without an Engineering or Architecture professor to help you through the errors within. The book is full of errors of continuity, strange/bad math, and inconsistency. The errors are so numerous, that it makes you wonder if you can trust any of the formulas to be accurate. For example: a sample problem in beam design gives the formula to use (from a table), defines the variables, gives the values for the known variables; and then in the problem-solving steps, uses different values for the known variables than what was listed in the preceding "Given" section! Furthermore, the answer arrived at cannot be made by the equation provided! There are also errors where a formula is listed in tables and that formula is referred to later and used for a problem, but the formula is not exactly the same as the table; there is no explanation for the difference.
I recommend "Simplified Engineering for Architects and Builders" (Ambrose/Tierney), instead.

The Mighty 7th!.......2006-10-25

This is an action-packed history of the Israeli 7th Armourd Brigade. The book charts the beginnings of the unit's formation in the confused fighting that marked the creation of the Israeli State in 1947-48. From flimsy armored cars and make-shift tanks the 7th Brigade has come a long way to the Merkeva tanks of today.

Katz provides a lively commentary on the training and leading personalities that helped shape Israeli armored warfare doctine. The battles are riviting in their descriptions, in particular the desperate fighting that took place on the Golan Heights in 1973. Here the 7th and 188th Armored Brigades helped shatter the massive Syrian offensive. This was certainly the finest moment for the Israeli armored forces and the 7th Brigade.

The book goes on to describe lesser known clashes against the Jordanians and the PLO. While certainly the Israeli tankers are far superioer than their Syrian and Egyptian opponets in 1967-73, the book shows that against more competent adversaries the result is not always so one-sided. In a raid against the PLO in 1970 the Israelis encounter Jordanian tankers in Chieftain and Patton tanks. Here the combat is not so one-sided as the Israelis find the Jordanians well trained. The result is a costly raid for the 7th Armored. Again, in 1982 with the invasion of Lebannon the Isrealis come up against more sophisticated Syrian training and weapons systems. The fighting is much more even on the ground.

While certainy the 7th Armored Brigade has a fine combat record overall, much of this has been against 2nd and 3rd rate opposition. Arabs using restrictive Soviet doctrine have two strikes against them already! In any future conflict, and as recent events in Lebannon 2006 have shown against a more elusive enemy the Israeli tankers will find success a harder thing to measure. Gone are the spectacular tank battles of 1973. The Arabs are not going to be so stupid to fight that way again. Now with the mighty Merkeva MBT, no Arab army is going to consider taking Israel on in a conventional conflict. The days of the MBT and the mighty 7th may be numbered. The future Mid-East battlefield promises to be a different place than 1973. The battles may be fought on the same turf, but the methods will be vastly different. The Israeli's will have to adapt their formations and tactics accordingly. Gone may be he use for tank heavy formations like the 7th. Only the future can tell what that history may be like. This book is heroic, more than a bit pro-Israeli, and a fun read overall. Some good maps would certainly help.

Worth more than a mere mass market paper back.......2006-08-07

Someone needs to get this back in print...but as a trade paperpack. This book is too good to be left in the mass market paperback format. It's current print quality is disgusting.

Believe it or not, romance novel queen Danielle Steele wrote a series of children's books that were published in the late 1980s. "Max's Daddy Goes to the Hospital," illustrated by Jacqueline Rogers, is one of that group.

Max is a little boy who lives in New York City. Max's dad, a firefighter, is injured on the job, and the book follows the family through the recovery process.

The book combines bright, colorful illustrations with a simple text. The book deals effectively with Max's fears and anxieties during this family crisis. The book could, I believe, be helpful to families who are trying to help a young child get through a comparable situation.

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a borderless world, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "fire tube steam and vertical water tube steel power boilers and other stationary and marine power boilers excluding for nuclear applications" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

Allan Armitage has a well-deserved reputation for serving up solid information with precision and humor. Now based in Georgia, Armitage began his gardening career in Montreal. Thus, he knows a lot about what happens to plants in both Northern and Southern gardens. He shares his experience and experiments with great good will, offering a depth and breadth of information that is rarely surpassed. Armitage's take on hundreds of hardy perennials includes cultural specifics, propagation techniques, and suggested companions. This chunky book may seem intimidating, but don't let the textbook look put you off--all the information, technical or otherwise, is presented in clear, accessible terms that won't puzzle beginners yet offer advanced gardeners the answers they are seeking. On the whole, Armitage avoids trendy tender perennials such as Meconopsis (the blue Himalayan poppy) that don't perform well for most North American gardeners. His focus is on solidly hardy plants, those that thrive in USDA zones 3 to 8. He does, however, include a few newly popular plants such as Gunnera, the enormous Chilean foliage plants, and there are lengthy sections for hellebores, heucheras, and other horticulturally hot plants, mentioning and rating many of the newest named selections. --Ann Lovejoy

The Best for Perennials.......2007-07-15

This is my go to reference for perennial plants. Informative, witty, just a good read for serious gardeners. More information on culture of specific cultivars than any other.

Unfortunately, I'm told that Dr. Armitage has retired from the University of Georgia and is now turning his attention to shrubs, so I suspect we will not see another edition of this book. If you love gardening, get this one while you can.

A Virginia Gardener

Encyclopedic and opinionated; points off for spelling.......2001-12-12

Allan Armitage knows his plants. That's what I've always heard, and this book amply demonstrates it. This book covers just about every garden perennial grown in North America, including many that most of us would consider annuals or at best tender perennials (e.g., cannas). Armitage isn't afraid to tell his opinion of any plant, straightforwardly telling the reader that that's exactly what he's doing--something I especially appreciate as gardening is such an individual and idiosyncratic activity. Anybody who feigns objectivity with regard to gardening is being disingenuous at best.

There are two major drawbacks with this book. The first, and most forgivable, is the dearth of color photos. There are just a few tucked in the middle of the book, illustrating a small minority of the plants discussed in the text. Color photos are expensive, and given a choice between pretty pictures and informative text, I'm at a point in my gardening life where I'll go with the text. I can always look up the pictures in the other gardening books I have, which often have precious little information to go with them. Unfortunately, this will probably discourage many a casual book browser from buying this book--people want to see the pretty pictures, darn it! But that's not the author's fault, and it's a shame, since this book has so much good information. Unfortunately, the line drawings that stand in for photos of many of the plants are very uneven in quality, and some are worse than no picture at all.

The second major fault, and one that I found very frustrating and far less forgivable given that Armitage is an expert in his field as well as a professional, is the large number of typographical errors, misspellings, and other errors in the book. Did anybody bother to proofread this thing??? Both plant names and other words are misspelled. In more than one case, a word or name is misspelled the same way more than once (e.g., "Hildago" for "Hidalgo", Yucca "filimentosa" for "filamentosa"), suggesting that they are not simple goofs or typos. Gardeners have a hard enough time spelling plant names without being misled by the pros! These errors mar what is otherwise an excellent and informative book.

THE BEST PERENNIAL FLOWER BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!.......2000-07-01

This perennial encyclopedia is written in a wonderfully engaging conversational tell it like it is style that is very entertaining to read. For example, of the Meconopsis poppy he writes "...the Himalayan Blue poppy elicits classic garden emotions of beauty, grandeur, awe and most of all, frustration and failure." But beyond his wicked wit is an absolute wealth of valuable information. My primary interest is in starting perennial flowers from seeds and I have found more good information here in this one book than in all my propagation books combined--I can see it is going to be my perennial "Seed Bible" for years to come. I always feel a little nervous when pulling the trigger (and purchasing) any book at this price--but this one is a gem that is bursting with information, wit and wisdom and I consider it an extraordinary value.

This new edition is even better than the first.......1998-11-24

This is one of my absolute favorite references on perennial garden plants. Alan Armitage really gives you a "feel" for each plant, giving you the sense that you know its likes and dislikes before you've even seen one. He includes all the information you need: cultural information including cold and heat hardiness, identification information, and propagation. Much of this is provided in a descriptive format which is very useful because the minor quirks of each plant can be included. I have found his information right on target nearly 100% of the time. Of great value is his experience in a variety of climates. This makes it possible for you to judge accurately how a plant will perform for you. I have the first edition of this book as well. If you are familiar with that edition, this is nearly identical in style and format, but with expanded species and cultivar listings. A few species, such as ironweed, are new. Others, such as trillium, appear to be greatly expanded, with more information on identifying the species and varieties within the genus. Cultivar listings are greatly expanded and have been brought up-to-date. If you already have the first edition, I believe buying the second is well worth it if you are a dedicated gardener or gardening professional--but certainly not a necessity. The sections on lilies and peonies and iris, and other such plants that have their own societies and numerous books all their own, appear to be unexpanded (which is probably wise).

Excellent reference for the professional or novice gardener.......1998-09-11

Armitage's book is a well organized, packed full of useful information, and yet simple to use reference which is perfect for the novice gardener, or professional horticulturist. It is well written, and understandable, giving a good idea of the particular merits and disadvantages of various species. Armitage's voice comes through the layers of facts, giving the reader a pleasant meander through the book. I highly recommend this well researched work to any who dabble in the plant world, or make their living through it. In addition, a good companion to this book would be "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants" by Michael A. Dirr. Both references should be on the bookshelves of those who are horticulturally inclined!
