4 out of 5 stars Softens the Pain of Losing a Pet...............2002-02-28

.....having just lost a cat that I'd had for fourteen years, I can tell you that the pain is terrible and that the one thing that can reduce the pain is someone who has been through it and who understands. Dr. Julie Kaufman, an animal chiropractor, has compiled a collection of wonderful stories written by people who have lost pets, be they cats, dogs, a horse or a beloved goldfish. It helps relieve one's own grief to read how each individual dealt with the loss, memorialized a pet and in some cases wrote poetry or even attempted to contact a departed animal spirit. She even includes relaxation and breathing techniques to engage in while thinking of one's beloved lost companion. This book was recommended to me by a friend and is wonderful for anyone dealing with the terrible grief that accompanies such a loss.

5 out of 5 stars A book of great comfort by an excellent doctor........2000-02-06

My 19-year-old Persian cat, Tilly, is a regular visitor to Dr. Julie. She is the warmest, gentlest and most knowing doctor I have ever known. She has helped Tilly with her severe arthritis and greatly reduced her pain. This book is filled with stories of the animals Dr. Julie has known and treated. There is also an excellent interview with veterinarian accupuncturist Dr. Heather Evans. This book will speak to your heart.

4 out of 5 stars A Refreshing New Perspective on Pet Bereavement.......1999-12-18

Crossing the Rubicon: Celebrating the Human-Animal bond in Life and Death. 1999. By Julie Kaufman, DC.

This is a very well-written and heartwarming anthology of real stories and experiences with pets. As the title indicates, it is intended to offer the reader new perspectives on the loss of a beloved companion animal. It also conveys the important message the bereaving pet owner is not alone, in this grief.

The author has succeeded in transcending the usual view and fear of death that we all have been raised with. In her wisdom and perspective she perceives death as a natural phenomenon, and offers gentle guidance to her readers, in developing this theme.

Each chapter begins with a self-help approach to meditative visualization and healing. In addition to the many heartwarming memorial poems and stories, this helpful book presents a positive philosophy of undying love, that enriches and enhances the life of the surviving owner.

In presenting new viewpoints on pet death, Dr. Kaufman has also added five interviews of special people, in this wonderful collection. These include a counselor in pet bereavement, two forward-looking holistic veterinarians, and the last two with a spiritualist and animal communicator.

Although the recent emergence and popularity of holistic medicine is starting to prove its hitherto undiscovered values, the suggestions that some people can communicate with animals - living as well as dead - can be too extreme for many. But it is still very interesting to read what these people have to say.

Overall, Crossing the Rubicon is an excellent new literary experience in pet love and loss. We recommend its reading, and trust that a future edition will include the APLB website with the others listed as Internet resources.

4 out of 5 stars A sensitive, heartfelt collection of experiences with pets.......1999-11-20

Julie has carefully combined a variety of writings, both her own and from other pet owners, that show the depth of emotional and spiritual connection that can exist between humans and their animal companions. These stories are "from the heart." Read this and see if a story of your own isn't sparked to life.

4 out of 5 stars excellent book for animal lovers.......1999-10-15

This collection of stories, interviews, and poems is reassuring and inspiring. Anyone who has ever lost a pet they loved should find something to relate to in this book. The interviews with veterinarians are great and the first-person accounts of people dealing with their grief will make those suffering from a similar loss feel less alone and hopeless. Highly recommended!

2 out of 5 stars Too Brief, Unrelated Compendium of Simplistic Articles.......2006-12-23

I purchased this book impressed by its title, in need of solace for the wound of euthanizing a deeply loved companion/pet. I was stunned by the political nature of the author-editor's opening essay, in effect a judgment of euthanasia (a blanket judgment). I came quickly to feel that the intent of this work--if not of the individual articles culled from a variety of sources--was to preach covertly against euthanasia. At any rate, I could not find a unifying theme to the disparate articles, and certainly the title is misleading. Any reader who wants a book to help with bereavement and grief will instead find very brief, clinical discussions of subjects like the difficulty of being a veterinarian; or how emotionally-troubled children react to pet loss.

Highly clinical, confusing, and often superficial work.

Book Description

Stories that address the grieving process of humans and animals who have lost their companions and that give advice on how best to help yourself and others recover

• Gives practical advice on recovery, including self-care, support systems, and homeopathic recipes, and also discusses the painful topic of euthanasia

• The first book to address the topic of animal grief at the loss of a companion, explaining how to recognize grief in animals and how to help them heal

Anyone who has lost a treasured animal companion knows that this can be as devastating as losing a human loved one. Unfortunately, our society's sympathy with this loss is not commensurate with the actual grief people feel. Kaetheryn Walker fills this void by presenting true stories of the grief process she and others went through after the death of their animal companions. She gives practical advice on recovery, including daily self-care, support systems, and homeopathic remedies, and discusses the painful topic of euthanasia as well. Her book is also the first to address the important topic of animal grief at the loss of a companion. She explains how to recognize grief in animals and how to help them heal.

4 out of 5 stars A great reference for helping animals.......2006-05-04

I actually lost my copy of this book, and I've added it to my wish list so I can replace it. The book is written in anecdotal format; the author uses case studies from her practice to demonstrate how particular remedies are used in particular cases of grief/shock. You don't have to be a Ph.D. or a hugely experienced homeopath to use this book.

Over the years I have used recommendation from this book to help animals recover from the death of their owners and abandonment in shelters. My most recent rescue--a cat who had been surrendered to a shelter when his former owner became too sick to take care of him, almost died while in the shelter (from illness and a broken heart), found a home and then was kicked back to the shelter due to behavior issues, and finally moved into my house, where he lives happily and peacefully with my two older cats--benefited profoundly from the advice given in this book. Only yesterday I was able to use information I remembered from this book to help a baby goat whose mother orphaned him.

If you are looking for a book to help YOU recover from pet loss, this book isn't for you. There are numerous books on the market to help humans recover from pet loss. This book is designed for you to help your animal companion cope with his or her grief and emotional turmoil after losing a beloved human or animal friend.

One word of caution: The author (and I) believe that animals have souls and feelings--NOT that animals are people in fur suits, but that animals have feelings which they manifest in their own way unique to their species. If this approach to animal welfare is too "woo woo" for you, you may want to give this book a miss. But if you are interested in homeopathy and you sense that your animal is depressed or otherwise traumatized by a loss, this book will be a great reference tool. Shelter workers and animal "foster carers" could benefit from this book, too.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful and pactical.......2002-02-02

I am a volunteer foster mom for kittens and cats, having had about 200 animals adopted.I deal with animal loss-I have to deal with cats I raised in my home and personally feel the loss and adopters who call me in tears and are very distresses. I recommend this book-probably because it doesn't have poetry and stories that move readers to tears, I find people can read that their feelings of loss are very valid and extremely personal-and it helps. I am not a professional but I am asked for help when an animal is ill or passed away and this book is short enough that readers will stay with it. The homeopathic part of this book is not for everyone-probably only a small portion of animal owners. But I followed some suggestions and as they say "It can't hurt to try!"

2 out of 5 stars This book is a homeopathic materia medica for animals.......2000-11-10

I think potential buyers of this book should not be deceived by the title into thinking that it is a guide to healing from pet loss, as I was. The author is a fervent, not to say fanatic, veterinary homeopath. What starts out as personal anecdotes about euthanizing or losing beloved pets turns into anecdotes about rescuing traumatized animals (surely a laudable thing) and healing them with things like Natrum muriaticum (chloride of sodium)and Borax (borate of sodium). As a pet lover myself, I'm the last to point a finger at someone who anthropomorphizes animals, but I do start wondering when animal emotions are supposedly "understood" by a human to such a fine degree - is it really possible to distinguish "rage in general" vs. rage from being left alone" vs. "rage at having the throat touched", and that each of these different rages can be cured by a different herb? Perhaps it is possible, and since the author believes in long-distance telepathic communication with animals, perhaps she knows something that I don't. The communication I have experienced from animals has truly been deeper than anything I was ever taught could be possible - but I wonder if layering on too much human emotion spoils the purity, the difference of relating to an animal rather than another human. The book makes several good, though not original points; that giving our pets a peaceful end to suffering requires great courage of the heart, that animals do suffer emotional trauma and do grieve the loss of human or other animal companions. The human-animal bond is indeed a very special, very important bond to forge - the capacity to love another outside oneself is paramount to being a good human being. Becoming the "ambassador" for an animal requires commitment, watchfulness and care; what our companion animals give us in return is beyond measure. Had I been interested in learning homeopathic veterinary medicine, I would have purchased this author's other book "Homeopathic First Aid for Animals". If you are looking for a book to help you deal with grief at losing a beloved (pet of any type, parent, a love), buy "My Cat Saved My Life" by Philip Schreibman. It will help you much more.
AFTERWORD: (9/5/01) It is now almost a year since I lost my beloved 17-year-old cat, Hugo. I felt moved to add a few words to what I wrote about this book in 11/00. I want to clarify that I believe with all my being that our companion animals DO indeed understand us when we talk to them and and touch them and can even read our moods. (Read Anthony Gugielmo's book, "The Walrus on My Table"). And I hope with all my heart that telepathic communication between animals and humans and healing with homeopathic remedies occur. But I bought this book based on the title, which is such a comforting statement when you are grieving a loss..."the heart that is loved never forgets". It would have been the perfect title for the books "Angel Paws" and "Angel Whiskers", both books that deal with coping with the grief over losing a companion animal better than the above volume. I hold no quarrel with this this book, nor this author's point of view. I just wanted others in my situation to know that better solace for sorrow could be found elsewhere. I have moved on to rescue two other cats since I lost Hugo; a 10-year-old cat whose owner had to enter a nursing home and could not take his cat and a starving kitten from my driveway. I say this not to glorify myself, but to make the point that, no matter how much I love my other feline companions, the hole in my heart left by my bright spirit, Hugo's, absence will never be filled as long as I am alive. I know that I will meet him again, when, as they say, I go over the "Rainbow Bridge" myself. I also want to tell seniors and their relatives/dear ones something very important - the animal shelter community has changed. If you are lonely for an animal companion, but are resisting because you worry about whether you will "be around"...stop hesitating! There are MANY animals out there who would be so happy to share your life, no matter for how long! I never in the world thought I would adopt a 10-year-old cat (I am turning 50 this year); but I did and it was a revelation. Even if one or both of you has only a few years left, don't they deserve to be happy ones?, full of love? There are so many sad animal stories around, but we should realize that things ARE getting better, that some people DO care, and that love can be just around the corner, for today, for tomorrow, for who knows how long? And there will be others to pick up the torch and carry the love forward. God Blesses All Creatures, if one can but see.

Book Description

This updated edition of Pet Loss and Human Emotion is a step-by-step guide to leading clients through this special kind of grief. Includes resources and a section on pet loss and natural disasters.

As society accepts that grieving over the death of a loved one is not only normal, but healthy and necessary, grieving over the loss of a pet is often seen differently. Expressed feelings often go unvalidated when in truth, pet loss is a unique form of grief that can be quite intense and debilitating, increasing an individual's vulnerability to subsequent stress and leaving them feeling isolated and misunderstood.

Pet loss needs to be addressed by therapists and others in the helping professions, to better enable them to help their clients through the loss of their companion animals. This unique guide is written for all professionals helping clients deal with the loss of a pet, and serves as a practical introduction to the field of human-animal bonding. Citing several case studies, it describes various techniques for helping clients when the bond with a pet is broken.

1 out of 5 stars I Unfortunately Don't Think This Book Deserves Even "No" Stars.......2006-12-23

First, this book is expensive. It is paperback and very brief. The Amazon blurb gives the impression it is scholarly; and that's the worst thing about it, because it is trite beyond belief.

It's merely a collection of truisms about pet loss that the most unlearned child would be able to express, and the unimpassioned quality of the writing makes it very difficult to believe the author (or authors; I'm still not clear how many people were involved in the work) were pioneers in their area in the field of pet grief counseling.

I returned the book and asked for my money back, and I haven't done that with another book from Amazon.

Pet Loss and Human Emotion - guiding clients through grief by Cheri Barton Ross, MA & Jane Baron-Sorensen, RN, MA, MFCC The seriousness of issues that can arise from the loss of a pet and the severity of feelings experienced are explicated with great expertise and sensitivity by Ross and Baron-Sorenson. This book is designed to assist anyone in the helping professions to understand what a pet owner may be experiencing when their companion animal dies. Teachers, clergy, mental health professionals, veterinarians and staff, and anyone who has ever experienced the loss of a pet will benefit from the authors advice and years of experience in this beautifully written book. The authors begin with a description of the well documented benefits of animal owing for children, the elderly, people with AIDS, the terminally ill and the handicapped as well as for the general public. They suggest an assessment of the role an animal plays in the life of the client and careful consideration of how that affects their daily functioning, self esteem, sense of well being and identity. The phenomenon of "Animal Collectors" (individuals who keep animals in greater numbers than they can humanely care for) is described and the authors explain how to avoid the pitfalls in therapeutic intervention with them. When an animal dies the authors find that pet owners go through the same phases as grief as for human loss and suggest strategies for supportive therapy. Specifics about the procedure of euthanasia are given along with guidelines for assisting clients in working through all the issues that present before, during and after euthanasia is performed. Client issues stemming from euthanasia will range from memories of other deaths to situations where the client and pet share the same illness. Case studies are given from the authors' experiences of special types of pet loss such as accidents, a pet being stolen or being killed by someone, divorce situations and missing pets. Helpful suggestions are given by Ross and Baron-Sorenson of how helping professionals may best navigate potentially explosive situations and handle the complex emotions of pet owners due to these special circumstances of pet loss. A range of feelings from guilt to rage can occur when a pet owner feels they were responsible in some way for the death, or that someone else was culpable. The authors give valuable insight into how to respond to these difficult situations before bereaved pet owners' job performance, marriage and daily functioning are adversely affected. Information on how children of varying ages assimilate loss and how to communicate the facts of death or euthanasia will be of invaluable help to anyone working with children and to parents. Concerns of the elderly are addressed including the profound impact of lifestyle changes a pet's death presents for this vulnerable population. Guidelines for acquiring a new pet are detailed with a special eye to timing and each individual's unique situation. The authors find that resolution of the issues presenting from the loss of a pet is advisable before bringing a new pet into the home. Their clinical experience has shown that when grief is resolved, the tendency to make painful comparisons between the former pet and a new pet is diminished In situations where there is more than one pet in the household, suggestions for clients in dealing with feelings of missing a favored deceased pet, while allowing existing pets personalities a chance to surface are explored. Behavioral manifestations of grief and loss are detailed with a list of common grief reactions to inform the reader how to recognize reactions that have become maladaptive. Prolonged despair and substance abuse issues that can surface when a pet dies are handled comprehensively with suggestions for handling crisis situations. Special attention is given to guilt, compound loss and suicidal client issues. This book is well thought out, and very easy to read as the authors have created an optimal balance of clinical and anecdotal information. This is a great desk reference for anyone who may encounter a bereaved pet owner in their work or co-counseling situations. I am not an car enthusiast, but my brother is. At present he has several Caddies from the 40's and 50's. After reviewing a number of books on his subject, I selected this one and picked a winner. He called earlier today, thanking me for this book again and enumerating it various virtues. I gather it lists all the esoteric information needed. I am afraid my comprehension of exactly why this book was so wonderful is minimal at best. All I know is that he enjoys it very much and consideres it a prize reference for the collector.

          5 out of 5 stars Fish Behavior.......2007-05-27

As a family we enjoy scuba diving. Our last vacation in Honduras we were noticing certain fish "acted" in very specific ways and some making no sense to us at all. We were told about this book and have read it now and things we saw make much more sense now. We will be heading back to Honduras in August and hope to use this new found knowledge regarding fish behavior in helping us capture better pictures.

so glad i broke down and bought this! after taking all my photos and comparing them to the details in this book, i am 99% sure of my labels! and after doing so, it was amazing how much of the info stuck in my brain!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating window into the lives of reef fishes.......2006-11-19

While on vacation in Florida, I read Reef Fish Behavior by Ned Deloach and Paul Humann. It is a fascinating, well researched book on the behavior of reef residents in the wild, based on many months of observation on dives. There are incredible pictures here showing life and death on the reef.

The writing is well done, and lets readers feel like they are observing along with the authors. Witness, for example, these few sentences taken from the section on Sailfin blennies: "...late one afternoon we saw a Sailfin making a mad dash across the seafloor. The little fellow looked vulnerable and out of place in the open....This was our first observation of what we came to call runners. After several minutes of crazy zigzags, the runner arrived at a hole occupied by a slightly smaller male, and a miniature version of a marine Jurassic Park commenced."

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best book available on this topic........2006-08-01

If you are hesitating due to the price of this book don't. Check out the contents page on the 'look inside' facility above. It is well worth the expense. Excellent photos,( I wonder how many hours underwater they spent observing the behaviour captured in these pics?) highly informative text, an absolute mine of interesting facts and observations about a complex subject. Though specific to the Caribbean and Bahamas it can also be used by divers in the Pacific and Indian oceans. Obviously it does not cover all species and unfortunately misses out on some of my personal favourites Morays, Lionfish, Boxfishes, Porcupinefishes and Puffers but at 360 pages it still covers a lot of ground. Enjoy!

The latest of the excellent underwater field guides by Humann and company. It illustrates all the fishes, corals, invertebrates and plants you are most likely to encounter in less than 15 feet of water in the Caribbean. Humann's photographs are among the best we've seen for identification -- and its handy size makes it perfect to take along in the boat or to the beach.

4 out of 5 stars great for florida.......2007-08-12

This guide is short, but very effective. The book has drawings as well as pictures for fish identification. The drawings point out pertinent points for differentiation between fish and how the fish are classified. The book includes corals and some invertebrates as well. I bought this book before going snorkeling in Key Largo. To my surprise, I identified many of the fish as well as corals in this book. For the value, this book is a great purchase for carribean, florida snorkeling, or scuba diving trips.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Photos.......2006-07-16

5 out of 5 stars Excellent annotation of great guides!.......2004-07-10

Snorkeling Guide to Marine Life is a very handy truncation of three heavy, bulky, but excellent references. There are extraordinary photographs of fish, creatures, and coral taken by noticeable experts. The fish species covered are stunning, and carefully chosen for quality. The others are also amazing and excilirating. A favorite fish species of mine, the Trumpetfish, is included here, shown in a beautiful photograph. Other interesting fish, such as puffers, cowfish, and triggerfish, are also listed. The "Creature Identification" section of the guide is as carefully picked out as the "Fish" ID part. Beautiful crabs, shrimps, and others are shown in nice photos. All make to combine a short, but very helpful field companion.

4 out of 5 stars For casual snorkelers.......2003-12-09

If you dive or snorkel with any regularity, buy the 3-book set by Humann and Deloach. For casual snorkelers or divers, this book will do wonderfully. It's a bit heavy on the fish, so if you are looking for comprehensive invertebrate, algae, or coral guides, look elsewhere. Otherwise, this book will certainly enhance your enjoyment of snorkeling and diving.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Fish Identifications.......2003-11-04

We used this book daily while snorkeling in Bonaire. Very good pictures and descriptions. Also good descriptions of coral.

4 out of 5 stars Great Guide to Fish behavior.......2000-08-27

This is a great condensed version of reef fish behavior. It is exceptionally well organized and easy to understand. I find it useful in guiding at the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, in Sarasota, FL. I am also a diver and appreciate knowing about the creatures I see on the reef. It makes the dives much more interesting and meaningful.

4 out of 5 stars a brief but well-written introduction to the subject.......1998-12-04

This book will provide a basic scientific framework for tropical divers who want to be more than just diving tourists. It covers the different reef zones and the interaction between them, provides an overview of the different animal families, explains the food chain and the interaction between plant and animal life, and describes the differences in feeding behavior between grazers, bottom feeders, nighttime hunters, and daytime hunters. All in a compact, clear format that can be easily polished off in a 4 hour plane ride. My only criticism is that this book, like most of the Pisces guides, is no more substantial than an issue of a good magazine.

5 out of 5 stars This book is more than a guide........2005-01-04

These two authors have a list of credits to impress anyone. I suppose in some ways they could, therefore, sit back on their laurels and allow their reputations to sell their work. But not so! I could not find one single underwater image in this book which was not of the highest standard. From photographs of Divers and Sharks right down to the finest macro-photography, this is a book to show all budding underwater photographers how it should be done.

That said, this is not a book about photographs - it is a guide to the Marine Life of the Caribbean, Bahamas and Florida. "What do you mean the Caribbean, Bahamas AND Florida - surely it's all the Caribbean" I hear some people say. But they're the sort of people who think whales are just big fish.

For those who are confused, the Bahamas are in the Atlantic Ocean and Florida is in the Gulf of Mexico. So, having sorted that out, we now understand (and appreciate!) the accuracy of the title.

Resembling something like a colourful version of a telephone directory, this book is packed with factual and accurate information laid out in a way that will not disappoint anyone who buys it. If you like "technical" it's here but if you like "technical made easy to understand" - it's also here.

Whilst I could have done without that photo of the diver hugging the Shark (picky, picky I know), this still remains an altogether excellent book and almost the only one you will need on your next trip south.

5 out of 5 stars Guide to Marine Life of the Caribbean, Bahamas and Florida.......2002-02-21

A well written, informative, easy to understand book. Not only do you receive a reference guide, you get biology lessons, photo tips, and great overviews of reef systems. This book is perfect for scuba divers!

5 out of 5 stars best source I've seen for teaching diving ecology.......2000-03-22

I'm a scuba instructor, and have spent years looking for the perfect book to use in fish identification and underwater naturalist courses. When I found this book, I stopped looking! It is the perfect combination, and makes everything understandable to the beginner, yet still informative to us old pros! The photo tips also come in very handy in teaching photography and videography... no Caribbean diver can afford not to have this book... I mean it!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR ANY DIVER/SNORKELER.......1999-09-14

This is my latest addition to my "diving book collection". I am a recent diving convert (the very best sport ever), and find myself reading this book constantly (more looking at the pics I suppose, which are gorgeous!). If you are looking for a fantastic book to invest in...LOOK NO FURTHER...BUY IT, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book For People Getting Into Diving!.......1998-06-11

This is the perfect book for anyone who is getting into SCUBA diving. Not just a identification book, it explains about the different areas that you will see when diving: The wall, The Reef, and the Sand & Rubble Area. It helps you understand why you see different animals in particular areas. It will also help you understand what you will be seeing before you ever hit the water. It was my first book when I started diving and I've given it to many friends when they got certified to dive. I highly recommend it as a gift to anyone who has just started diving or is curious about diving.
