                        Book Description

Ken Druse’s passion for gardening has always been the unmistakable force behind each of his books. Now, with The Passion for Gardening, Druse writes about this inspiration, the underlying spirit that is shared by all gardeners. This is not a simple how-to book, but a why-to. Why do we garden? And how are our lives immeasurably enriched by the process? As the world around us grows more chaotic each day, Druse, in rich and thoughtful prose, reminds us to slow down, put a trowel to the earth, and consider the wonders and healing powers of tending a garden. Gardening, he tell us, is an antidote for today’s hectic pace.

In The Passion for Gardening, Druse meditates on the issues close to heart of all gardeners: the notions of giving back and of conservation, of taking risks and the creative process of collaborating with nature and one’s community. Along the way, he introduces us to a variety of extraordinary gardeners and their gardens, revealing how they have cultivated their natural spaces and, in turn, have themselves been transformed in the process. Druse visits ten remarkable gardens, including a Michigan landscaper’s 60-acre natural habitat, a West Coast garden inspired by “the Japanese aesthetic,” and Chanticleer, a delightful public estate on Philadelphia’s Main Line that Druse dubs “a paradise in progress.” Of particular note is a special section on Druse’s own garden, including an unprecedented view of nature’s contribution through the seasons that provides us with a deeper understanding of how gardens truly live.

With more than 250 dazzling color photographs, as well as practical advice on replanting shrubs and trees, creating garden paths and sculptures, and controlling pests naturally, The Passion for Gardening is an inspirational and intimate look at gardening for a lifetime.

I enjoyed this book more than any "plant" book I have read in years. It is so well written and accompanied with beautiful pictures, I know that I will enjoy revisiting the book many times as I plan my new garden. No matter your garden style, there is something to be found within these pages that will inspire you.

                        5 out of 5 stars Passionate gardeners.......2004-01-03

This book is about people who find gardening as essential as breathing. A passion, for sure, perhaps even fanatical. I know a lot of gardeners who fit into this category and I wouldn't hesitate to include myself as well. Druse's books are always a treat and this one is no exception. He writes about his own garden in New Jersey and how he has developed it since 1995 and his future plans for it. He also profiles ten other gardeners and the spectacular gardens that they have created. Most of these gardens are filled with native plants, trees and shrubs and tropical plants (you won't any flower gardens here). They are all beautiful and the photographs are spectacular, the book is truly a visual feast. He also includes sections with practical advice on transplanting, incorporating water into the garden and garden photography. Perfect for the winter gardener needing their creative juices fired back up before next spring.

5 out of 5 stars The Passion For Gardening.......2003-12-14

Simply said, AWESOME!!! Ken's writing, his pictures, and his passion for telling the stories of the gardeners and their gardens is inspirational. If you have enjoyed his earlier work or are reading for the first time, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars As You Like It.......2003-12-12

Do you have a NEED to garden, an instinct that simply can't be denied? Do you gain a joy, a tranquility from gardening? And do you long to know of others who share this need and love?
Finally, do you love Ken Druse's other wonderful, wildly beautiful books on same?
"The Passion For Gardening" combines all in a typically (for Druse) gorgeous volume, plus it introduces others for whom gardening is not simply a matter of "plant material" being "installed" by some local garden center. You meet people for whom gardening, in all its aspects(from the Giverney-like selection and placement of the plants to the mundane and often satisfying acts of weeding and soil improvement) is almost a genetic imperative. You meet others for whom gardening is the thing that makes all right with the world.
Even in the dead of Winter, this book is better than three therapy groups or five bottles of pills. It is one you will hold onto till the pages are tattered. It is what that urge to garden is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Gardening for our Souls.......2003-11-11

Ken Druse is an amazingly gifted writer, photographer and gardener. I would not know what title to give him first. Passion is indeed a word that fits all these talents. In a world were all kinds of technical information is easy to be had, Ken Druse's book goes beyond the world of coffee tables and how to's. This book imbodies what is our gut instincts & passions, It is about responding to our intuition and letting loose with the child within.

The photographs in Druse's books are lessons on their own. I am always tempted to create some new tapestry after looking at them. The photo esay at the end of the book that depicts his own garden through the seasons and the swirling motion of a rain induced flood are my favorite. It is usually from memory that we see our gardens in the clothes of a former season. These images are not only beautifully composed but are great lessons from a seasoned gardener.

I read many a garden book, my sagging bookcases speak to that.Ken's are ones that I often and joyfully return to.

With its floral prints, chintz fabrics, and flea-market finds, vintage style is a popular one. Cath Kidston introduces us to her variation by taking us on a tour of her own home--bedrooms, bathroom, living room, kitchen, and home office--in her new book, Vintage Style: Creating a Compete Look for Your Home.

Kidston's original love of this style stems from the patterns and fabrics she grew up with. When she started her own design shop as an adult, she realized that these same fabrics hadn't lost any of their freshness and comfort, and she began designing around the patterns and items she found at thrift shops and flea markets. Her vintage style consists largely of rose prints in chintz fabric as well as comfortable linen and ticking. Lavish details abound--velvet curtains, tassels, and bobble fringe, for instance.

Liberal in her use of color, Kidston often recommends mixing clashing colors for a vibrant feeling in the room. Her walls are usually painted white, and color is added with fabrics, furniture, and accessories, which makes it easy and inexpensive to change the color scheme if you get tired of the old one.

Resourceful decorating ideas include the use of old scraps of patterned fabrics and striped linens, ribbon, and haberdashery flowers to create padded clothes hangers, ironing board covers, and stitch lavender sachets--all of which would make excellent homemade gifts as well. Kidston is practical about her flea-market finds--she never buys anything she can't use. But as she points out, there are lots of unusual uses for items you already own--you just need to use a little ingenuity. A chipped china cup becomes a laundry detergent scoop; old curtains are turned into tablecloths. There's something very refreshing about such resourcefulness in an age of disposable items. Kidston's Vintage Style is all about cheerful, well-worn rooms that are as comfortable as they are pretty. --Kris Law

4 out of 5 stars What to do with flea market finds.......2004-11-02

Unlike many of the other reviewers, I adore this book... to the point that I have had it out from the library for six months! (Yes, I know that I had better buy it soon, and, no, it's not overdue yet.)

Yes, this book is a bit precious. Yes, every single photo in the book features a 100% perfect room (right down to the eerily cute clothes hangers). But Vintage Style makes for delicious eye candy, and, more than that, it does have some nifty ideas.

For example, I've been using it to get ready to go out antiquing, as it has all sorts of ideas for making over old bits and bobs. Like me, you may see lots of old towels, old blankets, and old trims, but never seem to know what to do with them. Of course, you want to buy them any way. But if you also buy this book, then you'll know just what to do. You'll edge plain white towels with strong old cotton lace. You'll use old linen to make a crazy 50's roller towel.

The other aspect of this book that I enjoy is the fact that this book IS a bit precious. I respect the fact the Kidston wants to make every part of her life beautiful. Imagine that you had a lovely, vintage fabric covered ironing board. Imagine that you had charming slippers. I bet your life would be better! Mine certainly would.

I THOUGHT THIS WAS A LOVELY BOOK.I FOUND IT TO BE QUITE PRACTICAL CONSIDERING IT WAS SORT OF SHABBY CHIC MEETS VICTORIAN.THERE ARE MANY BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHS WITH PLENTY OF GREAT IDEAS.I DISAGREE STRONGLY WITH SOME OF THE OTHER REVIEWS.PERHAPS YOU NEED TO BE A CREATIVE PERSON TO APPRECIATE THIS BOOK.

                        2 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing.......2000-07-09

As a big fan of the "Shabby Chic" books...I thought I'd try this one as well. I came away pretty disappointed. One of the biggest frustations with this book was that the text did not relate to the visuals on the page...Often the photo was several pages ahead or didn't appear at all. And I'd say visual references are pretty important when writing a decorating book. Am I supposed to imagine what this room looks like? The photos that do appear aren't very good...many left me wondering what they even were. If you like this style of decorating, stick to the Shabby Chic books by Rachel Ashwell. They are a much more inspirational and well written series--and the photography is much, much better.

                        2 out of 5 stars Pretty, but a disappointment.......2000-05-15

I was really looking forward to this book, but was disappointed by its narrow focus. I wish Kidston had shown more examples than just her own home. And while I did like her decorating style, it was most irritating to keep flipping back and forth between text and photos, trying to figure out if the picture next to the text was an example of what she was describing (and often it wasn't) or if the photo 3 pages ahead was really what she was describing. I came away feeling that I really hadn't gathered any usable information for my own home.

                        Book Description

Vintage fabrics are the latest trend and who can resist them? Antique quilts, funky 1950s tablecloths, fine old linens, intriguing scraps of velvet and lace...there's more available than you know what to do with. Now Vintage Fabric Style presents chic ideas and projects that incorporate these fabrics into beautiful home accessories to help create your personal style. Blending their specialties, textiles expert Lucinda Ganderton and stylist Rose Hammick gives step-by-step instructions for inspiring projects, such as transforming an old piece of patchwork into county-style curtains, making a luxurious comforter cover from old damask napkins, and turning old family cast-offs into a lovely baby's quilt. Photographer Catherine Gratwicke uses her background in textile design to focus on each project both close-up and in its environment. Vintage Fabric Style is so inspirational, you'll run out of hand-me-downs before you run out of ideas.

Hidden in grandmothers' sewing boxes, piled high in flea-market stall or hiding out in the back of your linen closet...vintage fabrics in every style, color and condition are just waiting to be transformed into beautiful home accessories. In Vintage Fabric Style, textiles and soft-furnishings expert Lucinda Ganderton and stylist Rose Hammick suggest a multitude of creative ways to use these treasures - from showing how to transform an old piece of patchwork into country-style curtains to making a sturdy apron from an old pair of jeans.

3 out of 5 stars love of vintage.......2007-01-09

This book is somewhat interesting if you like looking at pictures, but don't expect too much inspiration if you are a seasoned sewer. And, if you take any decorating magazines you will have seen much better pictures than what is in this book. Definitely not a book you will want to keep for reference, because it is not detailed enough. A lot of outdoor ideas if you like to use fabrics in that way. Also ideas like: covers for hot water bottles, coffee pots, books, and clothes hangers. Make bags to hold laundry and toys. The rest of the book shows kitchens and bedrooms using towels and spreads with vintage, or vintage "look" fabrics.

5 out of 5 stars Rethink Your Use of Fabrics.......2005-12-19

I needed the ideas in this book to use the vintage lace that I'd collected and the stacks of old quilts hidden away in the closet. These were things that attracted me at flea markets and yard sales, but then I had trouble working them into my decor.
The idea of hanging antique clothing on the wall like a piece of art really appeals.
This is a great book for any fabric-aholic out there.

Lucinda Ganderton and Rose Hammick's Vintage Fabric Style uses gorgeous color photos by Catherine Gratwicke to embellish the authors' discussions of incorporating vintage fabrics into a modern home. There are ideas for every room of the house, plenty of step-by-step projects, and plenty of insights on fabric qualities and project suitability. Bright photos everywhere make for fabulous examples.

I really liked this book for the photography and ideas--IO would have liked it more with more projects and how to directions! It is beautiful, though

4 out of 5 stars Not enough original projects, but very good.......2003-07-11

I liked this book very much - the pictures are well-done and the layout is beautiful. Very high design standards. I only wish there were more creative or new projects - things I have not already seen elsewhere. I have TONS of vintage fabrics, and there are just so many pillows and sack bags I can make (or need for that matter). There's room for another book with more projects, but this is a wonderful, attractive start

Textiles are an important part of any interior, but one that is frequently overlooked in restorations. See how the author, Brian Coleman, uses vintage Victorian textiles to create a rich and inviting atmosphere. Period textiles on everything from Victorian footstools to portieres are given an inspiring display in the elegant photography by Linda Svendsen. A helpful description of the varied uses to which different textiles were put in the Victorian home will encourage readers to use authentic fabrics. Advice on the care and conservation of vintage textiles and a guide to establishing values is most useful to those seeking to purchase vintage Victorian textiles today. For designers and collectors alike, this is a feast for the eyes and a prod for authenticity.
