A useful tool.......2000-04-11
I keep searching for more books by Kevin Boyd. Both this guidebook, and the "complete Aquarium Problem Solver" book together give you the tools to learning what proper fishkeeping is all about. The cartoons are humorous and entertaining as well. I often dig these two books up ALWAYS putting aside my other 15 books of fishkeeping. I prefer Boyd's style and easy to understand explanations. These chapters are also organized for easy reference.
Kevin Boyd's Masterpiece.......1999-11-30
This book is a true look into the masterful writing style of Boyd. The sheer poetry expressed in this book about Aquariams truly moved me when I sought guidance for repairing the aquariam for my pet goldfish. It was a pleasure to read this book. I am a lifelong fan of aquariam books after reading this.

legendcolt/an american.......2007-05-09
The next best thing to buying a colt revolver itself.
Excellent in every respect and well recommended.
Surprised at the profusive praise.......2006-07-01
I bought this book sight unseen based on my interest in the subject matter and from seeing other offerings of RL Wilson and liking them. First off, this book hasn't been updated since it was produced in the late 80s. Lots has changed since that time. First off, I need to claim my biases. When it comes to Colt I am primarily interested in Single Action Armies, 1911s, and the Python/Diamonbacks. That said I couldn't believe how little photography was devoted to the 1911. By far the most numerous of Colts ever made due to WWI and II production. There were very few photos of standard production 1911s and those that were there were of well used and weatherbeaten ones. There were more of the decorative/unique 1911s. I am fortunate enough to live near a collection of Frank Phillip's (Petroleum) Colt's in the museum in Bartlesville, OK. I couldn't believe Wilson would not photograph their Colts. They're pristine, covering every major variant. The Peacemaker was given fair coverage. The Python and Diamondback were given very little coverage. At the time the Diamondback was current production and more blah in his opinion, I am sure. Looking back on it, it was a classic since it was the last affordable, working man's revolver made by Colt. Now, to me, it marks the end of an epoch. Yes, Colt still makes Pythons but they are so expensive, hard to find and production is so limited they are not hardly worth talking about anymore. If you are into the early guns primarily this is probably a great book. Based on my interests this book was a bit of a disappointment.
Colt Collector.......2005-10-07
This is the book if you collect Colts. It has all the early serial numbers.
View the mountaintop of gun collecting..........2004-09-22
Look, you can't get Wilson's seminal, collectible The Book of Colt Firearms because it is out of print, costs $1000 if you can find one, and your wife would kill you.
Get this book. This is as close as you can get and is widely available. I use it all the time to look up the date of manufacture of any Colt's I might want to buy. The illustrations are quite outstanding.
If you don't know, Mr. Wilson is the most famous Colt expert, who must be incredibly rich to have built his collection. Most of the items shown are from Wilson's own collection, worth millions. He doesn't need the money from this book. It is a labor of love.
Invaluable and pleasurable.......2004-07-09
This is an invaluable tome for appreciators of the Colt lineage and for appreciators of the history of the Colt enterprise. In this volume R.L. Wilson chronicles as accurately as possible the real story of how Sam Colt perservered to finally deliver a quantum leap in weapons technology after being rebuffed at first. The marvellous high quality photographs of arms are a treat in themselves and this is a book you'll find yourself pickup up over and over again to enjoy.

what a great book .......2005-11-20
The Blue Book of Modern Black Powder Values is virtually a one-stop shopping center for up-to-date information and prices on most recently manufactured black powder reproductions and replicas. Most of the information is simply not available anywhere else, at any price!
Blue Book of Modern Black Powder Values.......2002-07-01
This book is so full of errors and misinformation that it is totally useless to the collector of modern production replica black powder revolvers. In collecting replica revolvers the markiings on the gun is what makes one more valuable than another. This is a very new field of collecting and there is still much to be learned. It is for this reason that this book does more harm than good. Where does the author get his values? Why would a Uberti revolver from one distributor be valued differently than another when they are both marked the same. The book does not even list the most valuable variations. It appears the the "Blue Book of Values" has just come up with a way to produce another book by removing the black powder section from the original Blue Book and publishing it as a separate book. Values listed mean nothing and should not be used to determine values of replica black powder percussion revolvers. Dr. Jim L. Davis, Founder and President of the Replica Percussion Revolver Collector's Association, an international collector's association.

Words can not describe ..........2002-12-13
If you have a serious interest in Colt firearms; be it as a collector, shooter, or just plain armchair aficionado, this book has no equal. What ever you want to find, you'll find here in all the detail possible. It is an outstanding work and should be on every "gun person's" shelf, within easy reach. You will find something new no matter how many times you open it.
The ABSOLUTE Colt bible.......2002-09-09
Always wondered where Colt quotes from when I call for models and years of manufacture and this is the book on the reference desk at Colt. R.L. Wilson went to colt to do all his research and is the Master of Colt information, he also has a website where you can order his books (even autographed and numbered) This book was originally [$$] and I have seen it go for as much as [$$$] and getting scarcer. I have found this book to be one of the most informative books ever written, the illustrations are tremondous also. I have also started to buy additional copies as a future investment. The book is one of the first books that company grabs for when they come over. Can't say enough about it.

Great glossy stock on all pages, history, statistics, serial number ranges and identification, rare pictures, advertisements, TWELVE POUNDS of pure and permanent pleasure! Flayderman's has NOTHING on this man, Wilson! Well worth the $149.00.

Book Description
Private worlds glimpsed by a privileged few, monasteries have long maintained an aura of mystery. Outsiders imagine the silent seclusion, the austere settings, the rigorous routines of a religious life. But these sacred places share a common bond with the secular realm. Monks and nuns, too, know the peace and the pleasure that come from gardening.
In Monastic Gardens, Mick Hales goes behind the gates for a rare look at the integral role a garden plays in the life of a monastery. Gardening is not undertaken for decorative purposes alone: Instead, fruits and vegetables flavor meals and carefully tended refuges are the perfect spot to pray. Surprisingly vibrant blossoms may even decorate a guest room or altar. Starting from the cloister garth and spanning outward to the sacristan's cutting garden, the physic or herb garden, the vegetable garden, the orchards, and the vineyards, Hales's evocative images capture the many facets and functions of monastic grounds.
Through insightful interviews, members of the different orders discuss the divine purpose of gardening and its symbolic significance in Christian faiths. Hales also writes about the history of such sanctuaries, from one of the first, tended by Saint Anthony in third-century Egypt, to the present-day monastery cared for by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Rock in Shaw Island, Washington. Whether the photos are of a medieval abbey or a modern American monastery, Monastic Gardens immortalizes these holy sites that seem to transcend the limitations of time.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book.......2007-01-09
Very interesting, very beautiful book illustrated by photographs of present day monastic gardens in Europe and the UK.
More than a coffee table book.......2006-11-10
I recently purchased this book as a gift for a friend after hearing a review from a fellow book club member.
My friend is a long-time gardener and has also attended retreats at several convents and monasteries. She was delighted with the information in the book as well as the beautiful photographs. Especially interesting are the explanations of the selection of plants included in the various parts of the gardens.
I would recommend this book as a must-have for the serious gardener's library.
Great monastic gardens, and great photographs.......2006-02-27
This book is a precious insight into a way of life which is rare today, and all the more valuable as a result. The photographs are beautiful and informative, the text respectful but not synchophantic. I've read it twenty times and still find opening the next page a real treat.
Greening love...........2002-01-13
Books on the origins of English words, generally agree the word 'garden' comes from the old German for an enclosed safe space where living things including vegetables, flowers and children can be safely grown. Modern dictionaries expand the meaning a bit, but for the most part gardens remain places of safety, nurturing, repose, and reflection. The huge fields containing monocrops grown by large commercial interests, where nothing survives except the cash crop of interest, are the antithesis of the garden, which is literally and figuratively the source of life.
According to the Christian Bible (and the Jewish Torah), the original garden (Eden) contained the tree of life. MONASTIC GARDENS, by Mick Hales, is about the importance of gardens for the well being of bodies, minds, emotions, and eternal souls. The places he visited and photographed in the U.S. and Europe reflect the lost paradise and the paradise to come. Many of the gardens contain a tree as a focal point in remembrance of the Garden of Eden.
In addition to setting an example of the life well lived, providing a place of refuge for the weary soul, and working for their own sustanance, the most important good deed the monks and nuns who tend the living spaces in monastic gardens do is to contribute to the preservation of the diversity of life humankind at times seems bent on obliterating in it's mad quest for "perfection". Around the world other spiritual/religious groups are similarly engaged in this very important work. One can think of the Amish who live in the mid-Atlantic areas of the U.S. as like-minded souls who understand the modern obsession with "perfectionism" is a deadly illusion if not downright sinful.
Hale's photographs and text encourage meditation. Cloister walks and clipped box mazes reflect the paradox of life as a journey of the soul toward the infinite. An orchard where a fallen Quince stained with a bit of decay lies in the sunlit grass reminds one of her own mortality. All these photographs reflect the work of the creator who is the divine spark that sets the monks and nuns on their daily rounds.
MONASTIC GARDENS is a beautiful book of prayer and meditation. Forget for a moment the strife and hatred of those who do not know love, and focus on the words Hildegard Bingen who said, "greening love hastens to the aid of all.." This is not a book about the life of priviledge. This is a book that points the way for all.
A Truly Unique Book!.......2001-12-18
This book is a unique find. I have never seen a book before that explores monastic life in this way. The gardens are both functional and glorious. The photos are absolutely stunning. Oftentimes I have read books where the photos take center stage and the text is an afterthought. This book is an exception. It is a very rich story that compliments the brillant photos. After reading the book, I felt like I had joined the author in his travels and explorations. I will defintely be looking for more books by him in the future!

Book Description
Winner of the Frank S. and Elizabeth D. Brewer Prize of the American Society of Church History
"Writing a book about one of the most complex books ever assembled is no easy task, yet Griffiths rises to the occasion. . . . In her treatment of the manuscript, and more important, its maker, a forceful new picture of twelfth-century female monasticism emerges, one that is far less passive than that to which we have allowed ourselves to become accustomed. This work will be widely and warmly received by medievalists everywhere."--Jeffrey Hamburger, Harvard University
"This is scholarship of a very high order. Griffiths's research is exhaustive, her knowledge of the twelfth century broad and deep. She has left no stone unturned in her quest to understand the Hortus, along with its 'mastermind' and the community that produced it, and to restore this work to its rightful place in the history of women's education."--Barbara Newman, Northwestern University
In The Garden of Delights, Fiona J. Griffiths offers the first major study of the Hortus deliciarum, a magnificently illuminated manuscript of theology, biblical history, and canon law written both by and explicitly for women at the end of the twelfth century. In so doing she provides a brilliantly persuasive new reading of female monastic culture. Through careful analysis of the contents, structure, and organization of the Hortus, Griffiths argues for women's profound engagement with the spiritual and intellectual vitality of the period on a level previously thought unimaginable, overturning the assumption that women were largely excluded from the "renaissance" and "reform" of this period. As a work of scholarship that drew from a wide range of sources, both monastic and scholastic, the Hortus provides a witness to the richness of women's reading practices within the cloister, demonstrating that it was possible, even late into the twelfth century, for communities of religious women to pursue an educational program that rivaled that available to men. At the same time, the manuscript's reformist agenda reveals how women engaged the pressing spiritual questions of the day, even going so far as to criticize priests and other churchmen who fell short of their reformist ideals.
Through her wide-ranging examination of the texts and images of the Hortus, their sources, composition, and function, Griffiths offers an integrated understanding of the whole manuscript, one which highlights women's Latin learning and orthodox spirituality. The Garden of Delights contributes to some of the most urgent questions concerning medieval religious women, the interplay of gender, spirituality, and intellectual engagement, to discussions concerning women scribes and writers, women readers, female authorship and authority, and the visual culture of female communities. It will be of interest to art historians, scholars of women's and gender studies, historians of medieval religion, education, and theology, and literary scholars studying questions of female authorship and models of women's reading.
Fiona J. Griffiths teaches history at New York University.

An engaging exploration of Paul's interaction with scriptures in Romans 9-11 and 15.......2007-04-30
J. Ross Wagner's doctoral thesis builds upon the intertextual work of Richard Hays to examine the manner in which Paul interprets scripture in Romans 9-11 and 15. This is a very helpful work which opens up these very difficult chapters by examining the voices that Paul is referencing or alluding to and then shows how these voices in concert with Paul's encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ shape his message. Heralds of the Good News is a deep engagement with Romans but is also readable for a person with some background in New Testament studies.
