Book Description
Harry Whittier Frees was once widely known throughout the United States, initially for his novelty postcards, and later for his children's books. Here, animals are dressed and posed as people in a variety of settings. These wonderfully cute photographs from the early decades of the twentieth century are as surprising and appealing as ever. It is Frees' first book to be published in almost fifty years.

Cats.......2006-05-25
It was only within the last 10 years that I fell in love with cats. Until then, I was afraid of them and didn't like them near me. Then I was asked to care for someone's cats as they had to go away and so I promised to feed them. That was it! I am hooked. If you love cats, as I now do, or are just curious about them, then you will love this book. It is a beautifully presented, 476 page book, on excellent quality, glossy paper, packed with colour photographs of every cat you can imagine and then a whole lot more! The text is well written and the print easy to read. The content covers cat care and cat breeds. If every book I ordered were of this quality, I would be very happy indeed. There is just one thing; I wish that the book had gone more in depth into Feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS)which is quite a common killer of cats. Information on that can be found on the internet.

Customer Reviews:
My daughter and I loved this book........2000-03-28
As soon as we got Calico's Cousins, my eight year old daughter read the entire book. Several days later, I decided to reread it with her. I was thrilled to find such a wonderful children's book. It is incredibly interesting because it presents so much information about breeds of cats that most people have never heard of before. It has beautiful detailed illustrations on every page but it is not a mere picture book.
Here is what my daughter says about it. "This book is cool because of all the different kinds of cats and all the information about the cats. My favorite cat is the Birman Cat. I love its blue eyes."
We recommend this book so highly, that we are going to buy a copy of the book for our local library.

A Field Guide to Cats!!!.......2004-08-04
You know those handy little field guides to birds, insects, flowers, and so forth, by Peterson, by the Smithsonian, and by National Geographic? Well, this is the same sort of thing, only the subject is cats! There are a couple of hundred color photos, some large, and many small. They illustrate not just every breed, but most color and pattern variants of every breed. There are short descriptions of each breed and checklists of the pros and cons of each breed. You can use it to quickly nail down the identity of any cat, similarly to identifying a bird from a field guide. Due to the superb layout and organization, it's a lot quicker than using some bird field guides. More importantly, you can pick out a cat that you might like to own by very quickly comparing the looks and characteristics of many different cats.
The only drawback to this book is that it was written in England and the named and accepted breeds are different there. A careful reading of the text will tell you what the differences are, but there are some gaps in their knowledge of American breeds and norms.
Barron's Encyclopedia of Cat Breeds has much more detailed and precise descriptive text. The Ultimate Guide to Cats has much more beautiful cat photography. Neither one can match the ease and speed with which you can compare the looks and characteristics of different cats and neither one has as comprehensive a set of photos of the different colors and patterns as Cat Breeds of the World.

Book Description
In both decoration and design, the grand buildings and gardens of traditional Persia consistently refer to "paradise." The very word itself refers to a sense of heavenly perfection, derived from an early Iranian term for "the Shah's royal hunting grounds."
The fine touches of heaven that lie behind the colorful tiled façades of palace pavilions and mosques still shine in this richly illustrated and scholarly work. Enter gardens with intricate fountains and majestic ponds fed by water that is sourced from underground aqueducts dating to the 6th century. From ancient mirrored shrines of Shiraz and geometric gardens of Kashan to the ornate domes of Ispahan, here is a glorious photographic timeline drawn in water, brick, and ceramic ornamentation along the 3,000 years of the region's architecture.

In the name of Iran.......2007-05-11
This book contains colorfull images of castles, gardens, public baths, mosques and pictures from ancitent time of Iran to present time. Also, there were some pictures which they showed Iranian people are walking in parks because Iranian people ejnoy a lot walking in park, and spend time some where close by tree and enjoy shade and away from hot sun.
This is a good book to have.
A good surprise.......2005-08-19
When I bought this book I expected only to see a book with nice pictures of Persian palaces and gardens. But for my surprise, this book contained a series of interesting information about the origins and reasons for the construction of gardens and other buildings since ancient times. It was interesting to know how Persians combined a tower to capture air that, after passing a small lake, became fresh and cool air. This is the predecessor of air conditioning. Other types of amazing buildings, such as the early freezer, are also explained in the book. An excellent purchase for those who - like me - like to understand how people in ancient times lived.
Book Description
A history of the gardens and palatine architecture of Islamic Spain.
Gardens, Landscape, and Vision in the Palaces of Islamic Spain offers a new interpretation of the history of gardens in Spain during the period of Islamic rule from the eighth through the fifteenth centuries. Islamic gardens, with their cultivated garden beds and water channels, are traditionally regarded as an early reflection of paradise, which the Koran describes as a "garden watered by four streams." However, D. Fairchild Ruggles argues that the early palace garden was primarily an environmental, economic, and political construct, and that paradisiac symbolism did not develop until gardens acquired tombs.
D. Fairchild Ruggles discusses three aspects of medieval Islamic Spain: the landscape and agricultural transformation as documented in the Arabic scientific literature and geographies, the typological formation of the garden and its symbolic meaning in the eighth through the tenth centuries, and the role of vision and the frame in the spatial apparatus of sovereignty through the fifteenth century.
Ruggles explains that, while the repertoire of architectural and garden forms was largely unchanged from the tenth through the fifteenth centuries, their meaning changed dramatically. The royal palace gardens of Cordoba expressed a political ideology that placed the king above and at the center of the garden and, metaphorically, his kingdom. While this conception of the world began to falter in later centuries, the patrons of architecture still clung to the forms and motifs of the earlier golden age. In Granada, instead of creating new forms, artists at the Alhambra reworked and refined familiar vocabulary and materials; the vistas fixed by windows and pavilions referred not to the actual relationship of the king to his domain but rather to the memory of an expanding

paradise lost.......2005-04-19
I haven't read this, but the author's contention, contained in the editorial review, that the concept of paradise is a latter thought,is diammetrically opposed to the generally accepted idea that the islamic garden is a a descendant from the perisan chah-bagh,the four way divided, enclosed pleasure garden.
Ancient Persia was to the arabic world what greece might have meant to the romans,a paradigm to be emulated.
The word paradise, per se,comes from the persian paradeisos, meaning the royal enclosed hunting grounds.
serious scholarship accessible to the layperson.......2004-09-18
I own the hardcover version of this book. This is a fascinating topic. The writing in this book is beautiful: rich, concise, informed.
This book is serious scholarship, but much of it is accessible to the interested layperson. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
For more than three thousand years, the Persian garden has been a focus of Iran's national imagination, influencing its art, literature, and even religion. The Persian garden's inspirational role has, however, extended far beyond the land of its origin; its precepts have exerted a profound influence on garden design around the world. The Persian Garden: Echoes of Paradise chronicles the history of the Persian garden, from the magnificent sanctuaries and hunting parks of fifth-century b.c. Persepolis to the magical nightingale gardens of nineteenth-century Tehran. All were seen as a kind of earthly paradise (the English word paradise has its roots in the old Persian word pairi-daeza meaning a walled space). To an astonishing extent, that vision seems justified.
This book was meticulously researched and created over a period of six years in, Paris, Tehran and Washington by photographer, Mehdi Khansari and architect Minouch Yavari, together with the renowned Persian architect and architectural historian Reza Moghtader. It explains the philosophy behind Persian garden design and offers an authoritative account of its developmentintroducing new historical material in the process. This extraordinary story is enhanced by vivid descriptions of Persian gardens as seen through the eyes of travelers to Iran during the past five hundred years. Over 240 illustrations in full color, complement the text. They include magnificent color photographs, old plates and engravings, as well as exquisite architectural renderings and plans of the sites and the gardens. A selection of the finest Persian garden-carpets, textiles, miniature paintings, stone reliefs, painted tiles, pottery, and poetry, augment the reader's experience of an ancient art form that for centuries has sought to meld the physical and the spiritual.

The pictures, the stories, it is all one great inspiring read, and so much more awesome than i had expected.
In the name of Iran.......2007-05-06
This is a great book to have, it begins to illustrate ancient Iran historical castles from Ctesiphon all the way to Safavid Dynasty of Iran and how Iranian people has been contributing to arts, agriculture and watering system of Iran which comes to point of paradise. And paradise is a Persian word.
The book also can be used for travel agency because it has countless colorful pictures about Iran.
Enjoy reading this book.
Great Book.......2005-12-29
This is a beautiful book that perfectly balances information with stunning photographs.
A place to reminice.......2000-05-23
I loved this book. And it's not because I've been to some of the places that are studied in the book. The pictures take you to the gardens that were at the heart of the great residences of kings and leaders...In a time when few get the chance to see the beauty of Iran and the culture that arose from it, this book shows a world of culture, history and color. Look, read and with your mind's eye see an old world that gave much to this new one.

Book Description
"In the course of my research," writes D. Fairchild Ruggles, "I devoured Arabic agricultural manuals from the tenth through the fourteenth centuries. I love gardening, and in these texts I was able to enter the minds of agriculturalists and botanists of a thousand years ago who likewise believed it was important and interesting to record all the known ways of propagating olive trees, the various uses of rosemary, and how best to fertilize a garden bed."
Western admirers have long seen the Islamic garden as an earthly reflection of the paradise said to await the faithful. However, such simplification, Ruggles contends, denies the sophistication and diversity of the art form. Islamic Gardens and Landscapes immerses the reader in the world of the architects of the great gardens of the Islamic world, from medieval Morocco to contemporary India.
Just as Islamic culture is historically dense, sophisticated, and complex, so too is the history of its built landscapes. Islamic gardens began from the practical need to organize the surrounding space of human civilization, tame nature, enhance the earth's yield, and create a legible map on which to distribute natural resources. Ruggles follows the evolution of these early farming efforts to their aristocratic apex in famous formal gardens of the Alhambra in Spain and the Taj Mahal in Agra.
Whether in a humble city home or a royal courtyard, the garden will have several defining characteristics, which Ruggles enumerates. Most notable is an enclosed space divided into four equal parts surrounding a central design element. The traditional Islamic garden will be inwardly focused, usually surrounded by buildings or in the form of a courtyard. Water provides a counterpoint to the portioned green sections.
Ranging across poetry, court documents, agronomy manuals, and early garden representations, and richly illustrated with pictures and site plans, Islamic Gardens and Landscapes is a book of impressive scope sure to interest scholars and enthusiasts alike.
Book Description
This book unites new information and surprising results from the last fifteen years of garden research, at a remove from the clichés of Orientalism. Garden archaeology reveals the economic importance of Judean gardens in Roman times and the visual complexity of gardens created and transformed in Moorish Spain. More contemporary approaches unravel the cultural continuities, variations, and differences between gardens in the Middle East since Roman times and in the Islamic world. Scholars present new sources for studies of gardens in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, the Ottoman world, Judea, Morocco, and Moorish Spain. They explore the interplay of conflicting influences, the cultural reception of gardens in religious and mystical societies, and the political uses of gardens, presenting an unexpected diversity of garden forms in all levels of society.
Book Description
A beautifully illustrated introduction to the design, symbolism, and creation of an Islamic garden, featuring 200 color photos.
Customer Reviews:
Art and Soul of the Islamic Garden.......2005-01-08
I have been waiting for this book for several months; now that I have it in hand, it exceeds my expectations. It is visually AND intellectually stimulating. I have a particular interest in the symbolism of the Islamic garden and Clark not only gives an in depth description of this, but also puts it in context--historic and contemporary. This is also an excellent guide through the component parts of the garden. The chapter on The Prince of Wales' Carpet Garden is fascinating.
As Islamic gardens play such an important role in the history of garden design, this gem should be in every designer's book collection.

Book Description
Interest in the Islamic garden has increased considerably in the past years, to such a point where a conference specifically on this subject was held at M.I.T. in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1994. This volume collects eight papers from the conference and two additional papers especially written for the book, to further and act as a basis for the attention given by scholars these days to Islamic landscape architecture.
