Imagine ten-second exercises and five-minute training sessions that teach dogs how to sit, lie down, and walk without pulling on the leash-and solve behavioral problems, even in older dogs. Quick, easy, step-by-step exercises are part of a simple, playful training method that shows readers how to take the frustration out of dog training by stimulating a dog's thinking ability. For dogs of any age, breed, temperament, or social skills, this newly revised edition of CATCH YOUR DOG DOING SOMETHING RIGHT helps dog owners discover how to motivate their dog and to understand the four factors that govern a dog's behavior, the seven qualities of successful dog handlers, and the importance of praise, rewards, and play.

5-Star Dog Training Book.......2005-09-28
We rely on the expertise of others who take their work as seriously as we take our own, because we cannot be experts at everything. Krista Cantrell is the expert I (as an educator) recognize: Learning Styles evaluation for dogs-well, duh, of course! Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) for individual dogs-How lucky could your dog get to have this quality educational attention, learning diagnosis, and training consultation! How lucky you and I are to have found such an organized master trainer who is so able to communicate practical exercises, so that our dogs are safe in our often unsafe human world. So that we don't worry so about them. So our dogs become family members who are better loved and welcomed than we imagined possible. It's all in her book. Catch Your Dog Doing Something Right is THE book to read.

Easy and Short Training Techniques that Work!.......2005-02-01
The techniques really work and are simple to implement. Krista even explains how to evaluate your dog to help you understand how your dog learns. Her writing is easy to understand, and she uses real life stories.
The training is broken down into five-minute lessons and even shorter ten-second sessions that reinforce the behavior. Each lesson is step-by-step reinforcing basic commands such as sit, down, stay, etc. but played like a game. My dog loves our "training" time since she just thinks she's playing.
Krista includes help sections throughout the book to help you get the dog's attention. She also provides techniques to change a dog's unwanted behavior such as excessive barking.
I really recommend this book for the fun-loving, busy person who wants a well-behaved dog for a companion.
Absolute "Must have" for any dog owner........2004-03-03
I love this book.
It is easy to read and understand. It starts with evaluation of the dog and assesing the strenght and weakness of his/her learning abilities. Training...or better called teaching-is set of games, what dogs love.
I really appreciate the teaching strategy of looking at owner and paying attention- without jerking collar or using prong collars! That's an absolut must in training.
There is also part about bad habits. And some Earth energy massage for your dog, if you are into "chi".
An easy, fun way to train ourselves and our animal friends.......2000-03-05
Krista's technique takes a common sense approach and a gentle way for our animals to learn "acceptable" behavior. I have brought 3 of my dogs to her classes - based on this book - and have seen dramatic differences in their behavior. Mostly though, this book helps the human companion learn how to work with and listen to their animals. I hope more people take on this progressive approach to non-violent training. The energetic healing chapter adds a new dimension to behavior therapies.
Great resource manual.......1999-12-16
Excellent book! I bought it directly from Krista in AZ, she really knows what our animals are thinking! This will help the novice and those just touching up on dog communication skills. The breathing, centering ideas are similair to TTouch principles and REALLY work!

Book Description
In this collection well-known writers tell their personal stories about how the wonder, the chaos, and the pain of raising children has led them to engage more deeply with the world, with themselves, and with other people. Essays by Barbara Kingsolver, Barry Lopez, Anne Lamott, and Alexandra Fuller, among others, reveal the ways parenting transforms the parents as well as the children. Some writers are practicing Catholics, Protestants, Jews, or Buddhists, while others claim no particular religious or spiritual affiliation.

Inspirational and touching for any parent.......2007-05-28
There are many books on parenting, but none that I think captures so well the joy and pain, the challenge and reward of being a parent in the modern age. I am the parent of an adult son, and At Work in Life's Garden carried me back into the emotional roller-coaster of pregnancy; the sweet learning to engage with a newborn; the years when dependence and rebellion collided head-on; and the deep strength of a parent-child bond that stretches but does not break. Having contributions of many skilled authors makes the book like a sampler box of chocolates - each story a fresh surprise, each so different from the others, and each delicious in its own way. I have given copies to many friends and relations, and will continue to make it a special gift for new parents in my life.

Full of Period Style Ideas.......2007-07-21
I'm building a period house. So, I have ordered quite a few books recently. And this is one of my favorites, became one of my favorites just flipping through it.
If you've read any of my reviews, you know that aesthetics are very important to me; if a book isn't "attractive" with good colorful photography/beauty and a good selection of what is being photographed/variety, then the book is somewhat spoiled for me from the start. Well this book is aesthetically pleasing. However, I do agree with another customer's review that when it comes to the the knowledge aspect, this book falls short on providing enough variety in the "How to's" section. For example, if you wanted to create your own half-tester, the author only demonstrates how to make one style while there are other styles depicted in the book.
Regardless, this book is a pleasant surprise because I didn't expect it to contain the "How to" sections, show how to dress walls or include pictures of swatches. I do wish the author had included a section on shades: austrian shades for example.
Practical and Inspirational.......2005-12-27
"Glorious ideas for curtains, blinds, bed hangings and coverings, table linens, wall hangings, lampshades, cushions"...Beautiful pictures. I love it!
beautiful photography.......2002-03-18
Thoroughly enjoyed the book. Just wish it had many MORE instructions for making some of the period treatments.

Same old same old.......2006-12-24
If you are a veteran window designer, nothing new here. Some historical designs you can find in any period book and I was suprised to even see some design from books of Joan Willis. I was very disappointed considering the magnitude of his other books.

More involved than constructing a slipcover, upholstering furniture means giving an item a new identity that it will wear like skin. Understanding the layers of fabric, trimming, padding, and webbing that give a chair or a sofa its curves and contours can seem like learning a new language. How do you handle the practicalities of repairing the old innards, calculating new yardage, cutting pieces to fit properly, and achieving smooth coverage, let alone the aesthetic considerations of determining the appropriate fabric and trim choices? Simply Upholstery takes the guesswork out of all these problems and more, in straightforward, thorough, step-by-step instructions, supplemented by excellent color diagrams. Since individual furniture pieces vary so widely in design and dimension, the general directions are geared toward solid basic technique that can be applied to many styles of sofas and chairs. To show the entire process in action, the final section offers detailed color photos tracking all 50 steps of reupholstering a traditional wing chair. Like other volumes in Sunset's winning how-to series format (see also Simply Window Treatments and Simply Slipcovers), this pragmatic, careful approach brings a somewhat complicated subject down to a level that even newcomers can understand. --Amy Handy

Easy Upholstery.......2007-02-27
This is a great book! It takes you through the process of reupholstery with a step-by-step explanation of tools, terminology and process. Then it provides great pictures of each step. It would appeal to a technical or visual learning style.
More than adequate for the do-it-yourselfer.......2006-06-14
An avid do-it-yourselfer that loves to work on decorating projects around the house writes this review. I purchased this book after I finished my first upholstery project. About 3 years ago I got a bug to try my hand at upholstery and prompted stripped a loveseat down to its frame. I used only a few short guides from the Internet as my directions. Surprisingly it worked, but it was not the easiest way to learn to reupholster something. I purchased this book when I decided to reupholster a wing chair. This book has been invaluable.
The book is subdivided as follows:
PART ONE: Be Creative
Thinking Creatively
Upholstery Design
Choosing Fabric
Choosing Trim
Into the Workroom
PART TWO: Techniques
Analyzing Your Furniture
Tools and Terms
The Parts of the Cover
The Fabric Treatment
Measuring and Estimating
Stripping the Old Fabric
Repairing the Innards
Cutting the New Cover
Basic Construction Techniques
Putting on the Cover
PART THREE: The Process
Watching the Process Unfold
The book covers all the tools that you will need to get started. They also tell you how to replace the webbing and reattach the springs. They do a nice job of showing you how to determine yardage for the piece you are going to recover.
The book spends a lot of time on the recovering of a wing chair. Since I started with a loveseat and moved to a wingchair. In my experience the wing chair is much more difficult because it has more pieces and those pieces are curved. I feel that once you can recover a wingchair everything else is a piece of cake. My next project is an antique loveseat that needs to have its underlying structure reinforced. After reading this book twice, I feel comfortable that I can handle the task.
For those of you that are new to upholstery I will warn you about a couple of things:
1. It takes much longer than you anticipate.
2. The people that originally construct furniture seem to get paid by the staple, I know I pulled at least 1000 out of the first piece I reupholstered
3. Make certain the frame is sturdy before you consider recovering a piece of furniture
4. Consider a solid fabric for your first project so that you don't have to match any patterns
5. Save and tag the pieces as you remove them to use as a pattern
6. Pick up a few basic tools before you start: a tack puller, a web stretcher and a pneumatic nail gun.
If you have patience and time, you will enjoy the process.
Simply Upholstery.......2006-04-02
Even though I have not begun my upholstery project,
this book will be of great help to me. I recommend
it to anyone who is a bginner. Sandra R.
Great for beginners!.......2006-02-23
Written in easy to understand terms with lots of illustrations. This is a great book that explains how to reupholster several types of furniture pieces while teaching you the pro's tricks, so you get up to speed quickly!
TOO BASIC.......2005-03-23
This book is very basic and exactly as the title suggests -- simple. If you are looking for information as a do-it-yourselfer, this is not the book. You would be better off with UPHOLSTERY -- A Complete Course by David James.
