Book Description

Even people who live with cats and have good reason to know better insist that cats are aloof and uninterested in relating to humans. Janet and Steven Alger contend that the anti-social cat is a myth; cats form close bonds with humans and with each other. In the potentially chaotic environment of a shelter that houses dozens of uncaged cats, they reveal a sense of self and build a culture—a shared set of rules, roles, and expectations that organizes their world and assimilates newcomers.

As volunteers in a local cat shelter for eleven years, the Algers came to realize that despite the frequency of new arrivals and adoptions, the social world of the shelter remained quite stable and pacific. They saw even feral cats adapt to interaction with humans and develop friendships with other cats. They saw established residents take roles as welcomers and rules enforcers. That is, they saw cats taking an active interest in maintaining a community in which they could live together and satisfy their individual needs. Cat Culture's intimate portrait of life in the shelter, its engaging stories, and its interpretations of behavior, will appeal to general readers as well as academics interested in human and animal interaction.

3 out of 5 stars Cat culture.......2007-01-04

As noted in the title, this book deals with a single shelter; it is not clear whether the findings can be generalized to other sites. The author was sometimes intrusive.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST read.......2003-08-03

This book is a wonderful combination of intelligent information and a loving tribute toward our warm, furry companions and intimate friends. The entire book is the sign of personal, cognitive, and emotional experience that leads to the raising questions about cats' existence as sentient beings. The book clearly establishes the fact that our furry friends are capable of emotional expression and their sensitivity is not a matter of mere affect but an aspect of growing awareness. The wonderful point this book makes is that to be appropriately sensitive to other beings' way is to experience them as real, breathing, and living entities. This book ultimately gives a direction by showing that the wonderful bridge of connectedness of human and other beings is possible through direct and deep experience. It is wonderful to realize that compassion is the way to learn and love.

I purchased a copy for a really great price but would have easily paid quadruple. This was a great find and subsequently I have purchased additional copies as gifts.
The photography in this book is amazing, unlike anything else I could find on store shelves. The detail, color and printing make this photographic documentary a must have for your coffee table. This view into the architectural magic of Chicago is the next best thing to visiting.

      Book Description

The Practical Test Standards (PTS) series guides student pilots, flight instructors, and FAA-designated examiners through checkrides, the final test in acquiring a pilot license. Each PTS guide details the skill and knowledge that must be successfully demonstrated before an examiner can issue a certificate or rating. The knowledge requirements detail which subjects will be covered-which weather reports and forecasts candidates will be asked to analyze, which physiological conditions (such as dehydration, spatial disorientation, and hypoxia) candidates will need to discuss, and what kind of flight planning exercises will need to be demonstrated. The skill requirements include what kind of takeoff and landing must be performed, such as crosswind or short-field; how a steep turn should be executed, with specifics that include what bank angle and airspeed to use; and what areas will be tested on a continuous basis, such as the checklist usage, positive exchange of flight controls, and crew resource management. The tolerances are defined so the candidates know what altitude, airspeed, headings, and banks must be maintained to complete each maneuver successfully. Each PTS guide lists the knowledge and experience prerequisites for a particular certificate or rating and provides background information and study and reference materials.

            STRIKE HARD. STRIKE FAST.

STRIKE FEAR INTO THE HEART OF THE ENEMY.

They operate by sea, air, and land, descending from the night sky, rising from the ocean depths, striking their targets with deadly efficiency, then vanishing into the darkness from which they emerged. From the dank jungles of Vietnam to the tropical shores of Panama to the blistering sands of Saddam Hussein's Iraq, the U.S. Navy SEALs have become the most fearsome special operations force in the world, living by the motto "The only easy day was yesterday."

In this unparalleled account of the origin, evolution, and future of this revered military elite, Orr Kelly brilliantly reveals their tactics and their methods, their past triumphs and scandals, including the celebrated Richard Marcinko (Rogue Warrior) case. Brave Men-Dark Waters leads us into the shadowy realm of danger and deception where SEAL commandos live -- and sometimes die -- by their own rules.

            3 out of 5 stars Flawed effort.......2002-09-15

This otherwise solid account of naval special warfare (NSW) history is marred by two severe flaws: understating the roles of Scouts & Raiders and Capt. Phil H. Bucklew in NSW history, and providing an inaccurate account of SEAL origins.
Though Orr Kelly used Capt. Bucklew's oral history, he did so selectively and exclusively. Therefore, readers aren't told that S&Rs were always part of the amphibious force, earned 8 Navy Crosses for Opn TORCH; that they participated in every European theater landing, trained counterpart units such as the 6th Ranger Bn, worked with guerrillas in the Balkans (later in the Philippines & China); that Bucklew earned 2 Navy Crosses & a Silver Star for missions at Sicily, Salerno & Omaha Beach, then went on to become 1st CO, NavOpnsSupportGp, Pacific, supervising SE Asia ops for UDTs, SEALs, boat units and Beach Jumpers, then on to the Pentagon, in charge of all NSW ops. Which is why the Navy named its NSW Center building after Captain Bucklew.
In Ch. 6 we read that SEAL teams were established as the result of a letter to CNO written by UDT-22 CO, LCDR Bill Hamilton, circa June 1961; that as a result he was assigned to a CNO office overseeing SEAL establishment. In fact, months before Hamilton ever arrived there, the Navy had already discussed & approved SEAL mission profile, training, manpower, equipment, etc. Authorization was preordained. So, Hamilton entered a fait accompli situation & became part of the team effort, working for Capt. Harry S. Warren.
Roy Boehm was never "acting commander" of SEAL Team 2, nor did he send men to special schools beforehand. That came AFTER ST-2 was established, which occurred on 8 Jan 1962. Like Hamilton, Boehm was part of a team effort to get ST-2 underway.
SEAL Team 1, LT David Del Giudice CO, was established 1 Jan. 1962, thus becoming the first SEALs.
For documentation of the above, see "What A Tangled Web we Weave" in the 2nd Qtr 2002 UDT-SEAL Assn. mag, THE BLAST.

            4 out of 5 stars Chronology.......2002-01-08

I have read this book and it provides a documented history with names, places and times from DOD, and firsthand accounts of actions SEALS have participated in (including Viet Nam,to Patilla Airstrip, Panama, later in ODS. It finishes with the conclusion that there is a dilemma as to where the future of SpecWar is going. The individual chapters make great short period reading.

5 out of 5 stars The essential "History of the Navy SEALs".......2000-05-16

There are a lot of books on the SEAL teams out there, but unfortunately most are largely fiction. This is as good as it gets. Orr Kelly has done an outstanding job getting inside this closed community, as evident in his spot on terminology. The chapter on the invasion of Granada is one of two sources used in just about everything written on that incident. From a research/historical perspective, this book is worth the price for that chapter alone. No Special Ops library is complete without it.

            4 out of 5 stars Strong Stories.......2000-04-21

I thought this was a good book because of the consistant storylines. The experiences of these men were similiar yet distinctly different. I especially enjoyed reading about the "Fire in the Gut" determination that it took for each man to complete the BUD/S training and how this carried over into SEAL operations.

4 out of 5 stars Decent historical account.......1999-04-08

While the book didn't keep me awake at night like others, it was a decent historical account of the SEALs. It gives important and relevant perspective, drawing from many sources, which I believe adds to the credibility of the book and author. It provides details of specific missions, but in a historical, rather than a story telling way. In other words, if you're looking for a book that deals specifically with the stories of the individual missions, this one isn't for you. It gets into the politics behind the SEALs a bit and is a good first SEAL book to read.

                Book Description

All gardeners love plants but if you love them too much the chances are you will end up with a plant collection rather than a garden. Help is at hand from confirmed plantaholic and architect Roger Turner, who describes how to indulge a passion for collecting plants without forfeiting the joys of a coherent, well-designed garden. Happily, the book prescribes little need to curb the excesses of plant addiction but simply recommends ways of focusing it to the advantage of all who share or visit your garden. Good collections need to be displayed well so that you can see them properly. The first part of the book looks at the structure of the garden as a whole, the balance of 'empty space' to 'planted space', the use of framing devices, and the value of paths in providing routes around the garden. At the heart of the book is a large section on plants that proposes ideas and solutions for making gardens with different types of plant collections. Here you will find schemes for displaying collections of trees from small groups to full-scale arboreta; recommendations for single-genus collections that look well planted together in one bed; and the ideal 'space-holder' plants that cover bare earth before prize bulbs emerge. Over 200 eye-catching and informative photographs highlight successful planting methods and illustrate the rewards to be gained from finding the perfect setting for a treasured plant. Plant enthusiasts, collectors and gardeners everywhere will unite in their enthusiasm for this practical book that provides the key to making beautiful gardens while keeping the spotlight on the plants.

4 out of 5 stars Not a complete horticultural course, but very helpful........2006-12-13

I have been gardening for more than twenty years. I have never taken a horticulture course or attended a master gardeners class. Basically, I garden all summer and read about gardening all winter. I definitely fall into the category of "Ooooo, that's lovely! Let me buy one!". It's true. I am a plant junkie, but it's the learning and experimenting that has given me so much pleasure over the years, and my gardens have greatly improved since reading this book.
Yes, Mr. Turner does talk directly to those who collect a single group of plants: for instance, euphorbias (his own obsession), daylilies, roses, etc. However, his book was very helpful to me even though I am of the "one of everything school of collecting".
For starters, though I have read many books and magazine articles on garden design, his book was the first that finally helped me to understand what the "bones" or "structure" of a garden are, and why they are so important.
And he gives many examples in his book of how to take a collection of a single type of plant, say Heliopsis, and mix it into a variety of other plants, so that the collection is no longer like a coin collection, all lined up in rows for viewing, but an integral part of a beautiful whole. I think he did a fine job of teaching this concept. I just had to think in terms of plants that are similar to one another, rather than being of one species,(ie. Shastas, Rudbeckias, heliopsis, heleniums, chrysanthemums, etc.)and apply his same design principles to them.
This being said, his book is not the one, complete, answer to all my questions on the subject of garden design. I can recommend several others that are excellent (beginning with anything by Pamela Harper, for example), but cannot say that I have yet run across that one "read it and you've got it" book.
I have decided that garden design is probably a natural gift for the lucky artistic few, and a skill that must (but can) be learned, practiced, refined, and experienced over a period of time for the rest of us.
To me, a good gardening book gives me a new, better, or expanded understanding of the knowledge that I may have acquired from another book, article, or speaker. So, I thought this was a very good book. I learned a great deal from it. I recommend it as one good piece of an enthustiastic, amateur gardener's education.
P.S. If you want to be able to read books on gardening that go beyond the Sunset Series, you simply must learn latin names for plants. I have found that one good reference book that gives an exhaustive list for plants that grow and thrive in my climate (which, for me is the Southern Living Garden Book)is a critical companion to have available when I read other gardening books. I see the latin names of plants in the book, look them up in my reference, and then have a better idea of my chances of growing it successfully. The more I work this process, the more Latin names I know.

                2 out of 5 stars Limited Design.......2006-03-13

If you are a homeowner looking for good advice on how to make your hodgepodge plant junkie garden look good this is not the best book for you. The author was very knowledgeable about plants, especially those that grow in his part of England. He was also very predjudiced toward certain plants and used them repeatedly in his advice. Most of the plants he cited do not grow in my area, and the fact that he mainly used latin names, which I know for the plants that grow near me, but not for others, made a lot of extra work on my part looking up their growth characteristics to compare them to the plants that grow here in South Louisiana. I did not find this book very useful at all.

3 out of 5 stars More a general overview of garden design.......2006-01-11

Despite its title, this is in large part a general overview of garden design and types, with focused info for plant collectors rather limited. Also, the type of plant collectors he's thinking of are primarily those who comprehensively acquire plants within a single genus, not the far more common problem of the gardener who gets one of any type of plant he likes because he reads about it or sees it in the nursery.

The book does include examples of some genuses which might make a pretty good garden, and others which would not, and why. Varied genuses like Euphorbia are of course better than relatively uniform ones like Dianthus. Naturally, even in the former case, the garden should have some other plants for contrast of texture, color and/or season.

Basically, the book argues against most such focused gardens, which seems beside the point. ("You shouldn't have an overly focused garden" is rather like the advice to "eat healthy vegetables and eliminate fats" -- we already know it; what we really want is some trick to eat what we want, or recipes to really enjoy that are healthy.)

The book also explains when and how cottage gardens and meadows 'work' visually, which can help the eclectic gardener. But I think it would have benefited by some detailed examples of eclectic gardens that don't work, and how they were (or might be) fixed, by dividing, moving and reorganizing the plants that are already there.

Perhaps most useful are a few of the author's plant lists, notably the "yielding carpeters" -- species and cultivars that fill a space with low growth, and are easy to propagate, yet also easy to remove, and easily pushed aside by other, taller plants. But other such lists are readily found elsewhere (e.g., gray-leaved plants which like gravel). Arguably the book deserves 4 stars -- it should be useful for many people who haven't already read books on garden design -- but I rate it a 3 because it doesn't really follow through on its title's promise.

5 out of 5 stars A book needed by amateurs stricken with the disease of gardening........2006-01-01

I am giving this book a full five stars because I have yet to find another to compare it to concerning this subject matter.

Living in the heart of the midwestern United States, the typical British tome offers very little of any substance to me. In spite of the fact that the author is British, I feel the book has much to offer if one ignores some of the specific plants that are used as examples. Mr. Turner instead outlines the pitfalls of merely collecting plants. Quite simply, he admits that plant collectors will continue to collect. However, he encourages and outlines techniques to establish gardening goals other than just "MORE!". Essentially: If you are going to collect, (And you will.) do your collecting well.

The often dreadful look of a collector's garden has long been in great need of discussion. This book does a wonderful job of broaching that subject.

                  Book Description

China's food prospects have been the subject of serious political concerns. Today, China faces the challenge of feeding its 22 percent share of the global population on only some 9 percent of the world's arable land. Recent projections assume that the population will increase by another 200 million people during the next 25 years. A food crisis in China could threaten the political stability. The country's increasing food import demand might also destabilize world grain markets.

This analysis brings together new data, arguments, and in-depth analyses that show that China's farmers will be able to feed the projected population of 1.48 billion by 2025 only if certain policy measures are taken now. Previous research has primarily focused on the availability of agricultural resources. This study, however, shows that the scarcity of water and land are just two factors in a multi-term equation that also includes demographic, economic, social, cultural, and political elements.

One important result of this study is that previous publications have seriously underestimated China's cultivated land area. Based on recent data from agricultural surveys we found that China's cropland area is in the range of 132 million hectares - which is some 40% larger than the "official" cropland area still published in the China Statistical Yearbook. If this estimate is correct, we must assume that China's agricultural productivity is much lower than previous studies (such as the analysis of Lester Brown) have found. This is good news for China's food prospects. China's farmers have not reached the maximum attainable crop yields - they still can signifi¬cantly improve productivity.

Based on IIASA's Agro-ecological Zones Model (AEZ) we also found that China has some cropland reserves in the range of 30 million hectares - primarily in the North and Northeast. About 15 million hectares of this reserve could be cultivated under rain-fed conditions - the rest would require irrigation. Unfortunately, these cropland reserves are primarily located in remote areas, so that considerable investment into infrastructure would be necessary.

We also analyzed the decline of China's cropland area since 1988. Contrary to widely published arguments we found that most of the decline is not due to degradation or infrastructure expansion. Data from China's State Land Administration indicate that most of the cropland decline is a result of agricultural conversion. Farmers converted cropland areas into horticulture land and fishponds or used it for reforestation. This clearly is as a sign of greater market orientation, as farmers responded to the increasing consumer demand for vegetables, fruits and animal protein.

Water - not land - is the most critical natural resource for China's agriculture. The extreme water deficit in the North is causing serious water-related production problems in the northern part of the North China plain and the semi-arid border regions of North-central China. Unfortunately, China's agriculture is not only affected by a deficit of water, but also by its opposite. Some agricultural areas - particularly along the Yangtse and Yellow River - are frequently devastated by massive floods. Flooding is a major risk factor for China's food security. More cropland is lost due to flooding than due to infrastructure expansion and urbanization. It is also a risk factor with political and economic dimensions, because dams and dykes are often poorly maintained and inadequately upgraded.

This study emphasizes the demographic, social, economic and political dimensions of China's food security. It includes modeling results on the impact of diet change (primarily the increase in meat consumption), population growth and urbanization on food demand. With a massive increase in urban population, China must quickly build up its food industry and food logistics. More and more people do not live from their own land, but have to be supplied over a long food chain.

In conclusion, this study gives a more optimistic outlook for China's food prospects than those doomsday scenarios published in recent years. In particular we found that the resource situation is not as critical as previously thought. However, this is no guarantee for glorious food prospects. As China's (recent) history - in particular during the "Great Leap Forward" - has shown bad (economic) policy can ruin everything. This study identifies those political measures, which are critical for improving China's food security in the 21st century.
