This is just a very basic book about cats.......2005-07-11

This is just a generic book about cats, not breed specific, except for the photos. they wrote a cat book template, and just typed in the word "Burmese" as opposed to some other breed, whenever applicable. Don't but it if you already know about cats, and are trying to get info on the Burmese.

Decent Book on the Burmese Breed.......2004-01-24

This book would mostly be of interest to someone who is unfamilar with the burmese breed. It has sound and informative information about burmese and cats in general, but it is definately at the "novice" level. The pictures are better than most (most pet books seem to have terribly unflattering pictures of burmese) and it is laid out well.

If you are new to the burmese breed, this book is a good start.

Non-specific Cat Book.......2002-12-17

I bought this book from Amazon in good faith that it was specifically about Burmese cats. It is not! It is a book about cats in general, with the only Burmese-specific selling point being all its pretty pictures. And while the pictures are quite nice, I found they alone were not sufficient in replacing actual knowledge about Burmese cats. I wanted to learn about this particular breed, not just read very general cat facts that can easily be found in any sort of cat book. If you're going to buy this book -- don't! You can find alot more good information about Burmese cats (for free) by conducting internet searches.

Very informative and the best Burmese book I've seen........1999-11-02

Even if you're a Burmese addict from way back and feel you know all there is to know about this breed this book is still a must for the library at home. The only shock I had was how 'squashed in' some of the faces of the American Burmese were, personally I felt they looked like aliens but each to their own (they don't look like this in New Zealand or Australia). The Blue on the cover has the same features as my little girl so that was the clincher in buying the book. You won't be disappointed in the content and it's such a good price. Well done.

Substitute the name "Burmese" for any cat.......2007-04-03

Although books about particular cats/pets are rare and appreciated, I'm afraid this book gave me no further insight into my Burmese cat. Perhaps I am asking too much but I expected to find a plethora of special insights into this special breed. I didn't.
Especially in modern cat care I felt this book lacking. My breeders says: Fresh meat three times a week; chicken wings (raw) at least twice for dental hygiene, vary the diet, enjoy the peculiarly dog like characteristics of the Burmese. But mabe that's all asking too much - gotta go, Nero is bringing his beloved yellow wash cloth for retrieval...
It is hard to criticise a book that describes the best breed of cat on earth. Let's all write one!

I liked how there was an equal mixture of the traditional, contemporary, and moderate styles without editorializing. Clear, concise, and good pictures!

This book stared out with a mama kitten who is about it give birth. It gives details and pictures of thestages of labor. Then it goes into how the kitten grows.

Description:
Degradation of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in aqueous solution by Fenton's reagent (Fe^2^+ and H"2O"2) was investigated. Effects of reaction conditions on the oxidation efficiency of MTBE by Fenton's reagent were examined in batch experiments. Under optimum conditions, 15 mM H"2O"2, 2 mM Fe^2^+, pH 2.8 and room temperature, the initial 1 mM MTBE solution was reduced by 99% within 120 min. Results showed that MTBE was decomposed in a two-stage reaction. MTBE was first decomposed swiftly based on a Fe^2^+/H"2O"2 reaction and then decomposed somewhat less rapidly based on a Fe^3^+/H"2O"2 reaction. The detection of Fe^2^+ also supported the theory of the two-stage reaction for the oxidation of MTBE by Fenton's reagent. The dissolved oxygen in the solution decreased rapidly in the first stage reaction, but it showed a slow increase in the second stage with a zero-order kinetics. A reaction mechanism involving two different pathways for the decomposition of MTBE by Fenton's reagent was also proposed. Chemicals including tert-butyl formate, tert-butyl alcohol, methyl acetate and acetone were identified to be the primary intermediates and by-products of the degradation processes.

clearly written.......2002-09-14

I have enjoyed using this book as a good reference for my growing garden. Lovejoy's style is clear, she provides some worksheets in the back of the book, which I found helpful. I also noted her 'voice' in the book is not haughty or stuffy - she is friendly, and clear, which as an avid reader of garden books, I found refreshing. Her ideas are both simple and logical. I love this book.

Poorly organized but good information.......2002-05-27

Since I'm currently resolved to redesign my yard in the interests of increasing its ecological value and decreasing required maintenance, this "organic garden design school" SEEMED like the perfect book for me. And there is a lot of good information in here, about design considerations, planting tips, etc, some of which I've found nowhere else, and which have made the book worthwhile to me. HOWEVER, winnowing that information from the book was not very easy. Though the title suggests this is a textbook, it is really a long series of 1- or 2-page rambles about one or another aspect of the author's experience gardening her own yard (and one other yard). This work is poorly edited and organized, and there is a huge emphasis on just those two examples of garden design. To apply the lessons of this book myself, I needed more than anecdotes from two situations unlike my own. I needed some generally stated design principles, as well as some very specific techniques (e.g. how to build raised beds like the author's). While this information is in there, and some of it is quite illuminating, those gems occur nearly randomly within the 1- or 2-page rambles. If the book was titled something like "Design Thoughts," perhaps I wouldn't be so disappointed, but a "school" and a "guide," with all the clarity those words suggest, this book is not. A workbook section at the end of the book makes up for this by finally providing the reader with a definite guide for action. But it would have been a much more of a "school" and a "guide" if the workbook had been integrated into the chapters, rather than tacked on at the end.

An excellent guide for all gardening levels.......2001-05-19

Create a beautiful and easy organic garden with the aid of Organic Garden Design School, a design-oriented book which covers topics ranging from linking cultivation efforts to the natural environment offered to using colors and textures in the garden. Using space wisely, choosing native plants, and creating a garden mood are all covered in an excellent guide for all gardening levels.

Excellent guide to organic gardening and design.......2001-04-02

The author teaches garden design classes near Seattle, Washington and shares her outlines here. She is a strong advocate of naturalistic gardening and encourages gardeners to seek out the native plants growing in their particular area and use them to their greatest advantage in an entirely organic way. She begins by discussing the principles of design with the "five senses of the garden" (welcome, enclosure, entry, flow, and place) and continues with other design principles such as "green architecture" (elements of the garden such as plants and structures), creating natural backdrops, "sandwich gardening" (intermingling plants in the same location), and using combinations and vignettes. Other informative sections focus on paths and walkways, layering plants to scale, and problem-solving. Helpful charts list specific plants for certain situations. The last third of the book focuses on maintenance and offers clearcut advice and instructions on mulching, composting, etc. Included at the end of the volume is a 34-page workbook for readers to list plant choices, set goals, and create their own garden plan.
