5 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun.......2000-12-26

I am really enjoying this book - it's a lot of fun to have the chance to write to my favorite sports personalities. It's nicely organized in alphabetical order and makes for an interesting guide. Nicely done!

5 out of 5 stars Love This Book!.......2000-12-22

I purchased this book as a beginning collector of sports autographs. In no time, I received signed photos from Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr., Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky and Muhammad Ali. I'm still sending out a lot of requests and look forward to going to the mailbox every day! I'm really happy with the results of this book and would much rather have this guide to refer to as opposed to spending hours upon hours trying to piece this much information together myself. I think the author did a fantastic job and should be recognized for her hard work. Looking forward to future projects from this talented young lady!

    1 out of 5 stars A Useless Guide.......2000-12-19

I bought the Sports Address book for my 14 year old son for the Holidays, and we were both greatly disppointed! I could have authored this book! 99% of the addresses are in care of teams, or in care of organizations! Anyone can find the address of a team! It must have taken this author less than 2 days to write this book! The title is deceiving! It should be titled, Sports Autographs-Care of Teams! We are trying to find a way to return this book!It was a waste of over thirty dollars. It was an insult to the true autograph collector! The author, if she had any decency, should buy this book back from us, and give it to a member of her family, as a Holiday present!

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the cost.......2000-12-17

All of the addresses are C/O a team or Association. You could spend 10 minutes online and get all of the addresses in this book. Very dissapointed!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Gift!.......2000-12-06

I purchased this book as a gift for a member of my family who primarily collects sports autographs. After receiving it, I looked through the pages and found that there are listings for so many favorites! We are really big racing fans and I was pleased to see so many addresses for drivers - this book will make a great gift for my cousin!

      Product Description

Irises are one of the world's most popular garden plants. That was not always so. The story of how several men and women transformed relatively unimpressive iris species into the plants with flowers of diverse forms and colors so beloved by today's gardeners has never been told until now. This book, the first ever written on the history of garden irises, represents years of research in French, British and American primary and secondary sources. It challenges taxonomists' designation of Iris germanica as the type species for genus Iris and the generally accepted status of Iris albicans. It is also the first book containing extensive information on the native iris species of Florida and the deplorable state of taxonomy of these species. This scholarly work was written to appeal to the lay reader as well as to the specialist. Many beautiful and original pictures of irises are included along with pictures of some of those whose stories are told.

      5 out of 5 stars A must have book!.......2007-01-29

If you have not gotten a copy of C E Mahan's book "Classic Irises and the Men and Women Who Created Them" Do so. Especially those of us who live in California. If you want to know about the movers and shakers of the
California iris world you get to learn about them here. Phil Edinger, Ben Hager, William Mohr, Sydney Mitchell, and Jennett Dean are all there. (I personally met Ben Hager, actually talked him into speaking at a Fresno Iris Society meeting years ago.) What an honor that was.

There are wonderful photos and prints of flowers gone by. Well written and a joy to read. As the Preface states: "The book is a history of garden irises. It tells the stories of the men and women who transformed iris species into the flowers of myriad forms and color that grow in our gardens today." It actually does more than that. It helps us understand
how this little flower has been kept in gardens all around the world for centuries. It shows the passions of the men and women who loved them and their hard work of ensuring that generations to come would be able to love them as well.

The last chapter, which is dear to the author's heart, is about the "Ghost Irises" of Florida. In this particular case, time is fleeting for these irises, and the knowledge to be gained shall be lost forever.
What am I talking about? Obtain a copy for yourself and see!

"Classic Irises and the Men and Women Who Created Them" is well written by a very knowledgeable gentleman. "Clarence E. Mahan is an internationally recognized authority on Irises" He was president of the AIS Society and still very active in giving programs and lectures. There is no doubt in my mind that this book shall be around for a long time. Thank you CE Mahan for taking the time to save this information and share it with those of us who love Irises.

      5 out of 5 stars Sheer Beauty.......2007-01-27

When I slid this book from its packaging, I gasped at its external beauty. One cannot, they say, judge a book by its cover. But it is also said that there is an exception to every rule. Believe me, this is a book that you can judge by its cover. It is, literally, a work of art from beginning to end -- simply magnificent. If you are a lover of irises, I guarantee that the beauty of the illustrations will tear at your heart -- the paintings of Ethel Anson S. Peckham, the outstanding color photographs by Mike Lowe, as well as a variety of artistic renderings selected by the author from his own collection and from other sources. I forgot supper as I scanned the pages and, serendipitously, read passages here and there, but I soon saw that this was a book whose delights, like rich food, should be savored slowly and over time. It is a series of cleverly titled stories intertwining the development of great garden irises with the lives of their developers, all told in the author's uncomplicated but richly informative style. Whether relating the fortunes of French nurserymen during the Terror or a future irisarian's experiences as a boy on the American prairie, Clarence Mahan's narrative is never dull. Quite the contrary; in the remarkable depth and extent of its scholarship, it often reads like a detective story, its findings occasionally spiced by the sly humor for which the author is known among his associates in the iris world. Nor is this a book only for iris lovers. Since the early hybridizers of irises were often collectors, cultivators and purveyors of a wide variety of flowers, the reader is also treated to equally interesting sidelights on the development of roses, peonies, chrysanthemums and other garden favorites. But it is, above all, a tribute to the men and women whose lives resulted in the irises that grace our gardens today.

In the preface, Mr. Mahan says of the persons of whom he writes, " . . . they were not just gardeners. They were also artists. They created beauty by breeding irises." This is a book worthy of its subjects and their work, by an author who is of the same breed.

      5 out of 5 stars Nothing Compares!.......2007-03-02

Like all botanical Encyclopedias, this can't possibly contain all the varieties available, but almost all are represented in some form. This book is responsible for spurring my obsession with Irises so I can't vouch for its significance to the experienced gardener, but I haven't found anything that compares. The text is very brief and concise, but provides a good overview of each Iris family (I didn't know there were so many!).

If you are an Iris enthusiasts or want to become one, this is the book to own!

4 out of 5 stars Stunning book, I'm looking for even more!.......2006-07-11

I've read three iris books back to back looking for specific information:

I want to know about hybridizing bearded irises and this book gives a very good general overview. Better than the other books, but still fairly general in cross-making information.

I also used it to look for answers to some weird occurrences in my Irises this year and found no description of the symptoms in the pests/diseases part. The other books didn't have the problem either so I am frustrated, but perhaps shouldn't blame this book for not providing the answer.

This IS ABSOLUTELY the best book on the market on the subject though, better, fuller, glossier, and more comprehensive than the rest I've seen. I was a little surprised to see it is mostly a listing of irises in cultivation which is an ambitious undertaking.

I would caution against using any book to identify unknown Irises as there are just too many cultivars to be sure you've got the right name. However, I absolutely would (and did) use it to verify the identities of named Irises with a few nametags that got mixed up.

I would've given it 5 stars if there had been a little more information on the aforementioned items. I perhaps owe it 5 stars simply for the amazing job they did on the species Irises which no other book comes close to matching.

I bought it for my mom, a definate iris lover, she is absolutley thrilled over it. She shows it to everyone that mentions the word Iris, to her. Her sister, my Aunt, looks at the book everytime she goes to visit her, too. She is another iris lover. So are my sister's and I am, too.
Thank you for helping me please all the iris lovers in my family. Which goes beyond my mother and my Aunt. We are all pleased with this book. We all would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about irises.

            Book Description

This volume provides the first comprehensive, botanically detailed and up-to-date survey of this beautiful group of plants since publication of The Genus Iris by W. R. Dykes early this century. Following the pattern of the original Dykes monograph, botanical details, cultivation suggestions and general comments are supplied, and the work is generously illustrated with accurate line drawings, colour pictures of unusual species and distribution maps. This new survey includes all of the species which have been described so far this century and takes into account the many changes in classification which have taken place in the group. Information currently scattered in the literature is brought together in one volume to provide an authoritative reference for professional botanists and growers, and a mine of useful information for amateur gardeners and iris enthusiasts.

1 out of 5 stars The worse Iris book I have ever seen!.......2006-04-29

While reading all these nice reviews about this book I am tempted to write my own opinion. So it is - this is the worse book about Irises I have ever seen. First, do not expect much information from this book. The book contains mostly pictures and pictures are the bad part of this book. Some of them are out of focus, some other have completely wrong light, many pictures are with gray, bad colors, etc. Finally, many pictures doesn't really show the structure of the flower, they show something that sometimes even doesn't look like a flower. In a few occasions I found also that text and the picture doesn't match (or the picture was so bad).

Any way, I am very disappointed. I lost some $$.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2005-11-18

Only the first few pages contain information. First page covers types of irises, second page tells how to read the book, third page covers planting and growing tall bearded iris. All the other pages are just alphabetically listed iris photos with a caption below each one detailing: hybridizer, year, bloom season and height. This pictorial guide is simply like another iris catalog.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference book!.......2001-11-28

This book has awesome photographs and is a wonderful reference book for anyone interested in growing tall bearded irises. I love it!!

5 out of 5 stars A Dream Book For Iris Lovers.......2001-11-10

This is one of the best books on iris's I have seen. It is full of beautiful pictures, page after page. This is a must have for Iris lovers!. I want every flower I see!. I can't say how much I have enjoyed looking at the pictures and wishing spring was here to see the iris's in bloom. I know my garden will be increasing by leaps and bounds with a lot of new added editions. I have visited the author's garden, as she is local, and believe me the pictures are beautiful, but her gardens are totally breath taking.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an iris book that talks about borers.......2003-02-17

"The Gardener's Iris Book" describes itself as an introductory book for American gardeners. In my own experience, books about irises tend to fall into two categories: beautiful and fun to read, but not particularly useful or well-organized; and books that I can take out into the garden and actually use. This volume manages to straddle both categories, which is good because I like to look at beautiful pictures of irises, but I've also discovered that they are not particularly easy to grow. I've lost two complete plantings of Bearded Irises to borers, and even managed to kill off a bed of hardy Siberian irises.

Why bother with a touchy plant that has such a short growing season? That's easy: because they're one of the most beautiful flowers in the garden when they do bloom.

The author has a gift for clear, succinct phrasing, very well-suited for a 'how to' manual on growing irises. He also loves his subject--in the chapter on Louisiana Irises, he refers to himself as 'Johnny Iris Seed' because of his habit of planting his extra rhizomes in the mud at the margins of farm ponds, park pools, or even roadside ditches. "Most will establish themselves and give pleasure to passersby in years to come."

After forty years of growing irises, he has learned that a good garden springs from a healthy, living soil. He suggests using pesticides and commercial fertilizers only as a last resort. For instance, in the section on Iris borers, he starts with the least toxic methods for ridding your garden of these pests: carefully clean up your garden debris in late fall and early spring to limit the number of borers that will hatch. Monitor the young foliage fans for notches, then pinch the fan below the notches to squash any burrower (a mano a mano approach not recommended for the squeamish).

Irises can also be treated with beneficial nematodes. I tried this method one year with some success, although the neighbors probably wondered why I was running around with what looked like a horse hypodermic and sticking it into iris stems. According to this author, the nematodes can be sprayed on plants or used as a soil drench, so I can throw away my hypo.

"The Gardener's Iris Book" is fun to read straight through to the appendices on Iris specialist nurseries (listed by state), and iris books and computer resources. However the book is divided into sections that treat irises with similar growing characteristics, e.g. those requiring substantial moisture or those that thrive in dry conditions. These useful subdivisions allow the reader-in-a-hurry to concentrate on the irises that thrive in an environment most closely resembling his or her own garden.

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Reference.......2000-05-22

My mother has found this book to be a very informative and helpful reference. When she started losing some of her plants to rot, the book explained what it was and how to treat it.

5 out of 5 stars The Gardener's Iris Book is fabulous!.......2000-05-19

With fabulous photography by Roger Foley et al, this is an indispensable reference on irises for newcomers to these flags or old-times iris lovers. All the essential care needed for a spectacular display of these moving flowers. The Gardener's Iris Book is a wonderful way to learn how to tend your new crop of these amazing & historic plants. This is a book I've often re-read, the information I keep gleaning comes just at the right time. END

5 out of 5 stars This is a good, thorough and readable book on irises........1998-09-11

The Gardener's Iris Book is an excellent resource for iris lovers and growers. The book covers all aspects of iris culture, from types to best growing methods and sourcing information. The book is lavishly supplemented with photographs and illustrations as well.

A must for every gardener's library.

                    Book Description

The book contains a commentary on Book V of the Argonautica of Valerius Flaccus, paying attention to linguistic, philological and literary aspects. Line by line the words and phrases chosen, sources used and literary models are treated. The last commentary on all eight books of the Argonautica appeared a century ago (Langen 1896), so there is ample room to apply new views in Latin linguistics and concepts of literature. A small number of textual variants is supported.
