Book Description
A fascinating world of scientific wonders, the amphibian species is full of unusual and extreme adaptations and is home to numerous unsolved mysteries.
Amphibians is your guide to these intriguing and diverse creatures.
Often misunderstood, this species which includes frogs, toads, salamanders and newts, surpasses all other vertebrate species in survival and reproduction strategies. In addition, as the stunning photographs depict, amphibians are also creatures of extreme beauty. Many tropical tree -- and poison-arrow frogs are just as dazzling in appearance as some of the world's most colorful birds.
Scientific experts from all over the globe have contributed their knowledge and understanding of amphibians to this comprehensive volume. An excellent resource for both experienced and amateur scientists,
Amphibians, includes information on thousands of amphibian species from throughout the world. This useful reference guide also includes information on the biology, physiology and evolution of amphibians, as well as chapters on Ecology and Ethology, The Meaning of Amphibians for Mankind, and Endangerment and Species Protection. This last section is important as global warming, habitat loss and pesticides have placed many amphibians -- even common frogs and toads -- on the road to extinction.
Fascinating and informative,
Amphibians, is one of the most comprehensive books available on this adaptive and ubiquitous species.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, but tough reading.......2005-12-24
I was actually disappointed by this book.
Each chapter in this book was written by a different person, most of them highly educated academic herpetologists. There's nothing wrong with the information, except if it's become dated since publication. Unfortunately the whole book is just hard to read! The authors wrote for their own educational level; whether the rest of us can follow it or not depends on how interested we are in the material, how good of a herpetological dictionary we have, and our own educational level.
The pictures are beautiful, probably worth the cover price alone.
It's just - as a writer - I know this could have been written so all could read it. My frustration is that people, particularly young ones, would get turned off on herpetology and perhaps even on science after trying to read this book.
Fabulous photos, but so-so text.......2004-08-29
The photos in this book are undoubtedly its strength. It may be worth buying this book just for the pictures. The problems with the text are as follows. First, it is obviously translated. It has been edited for correct English, but some of it still sounds awkward. The word usage often seems strange. I found a few errors, probably introduced by the translation/editing process. Second, it is not clear who it is written for. The vocabulary is probably too advanced for a non-scientist, but the information is nothing new for the specialist. Third, some of the information is too cursory to be of much value. For example, the chapter on diseases is very general; I don't think anyone would find the information here of much value.
This book is worthwhile, but I would not consider it an essential reference work. Buy it for the photos, but don't expect the text to be excellent.
Very Informative.......2000-11-22

it is very very ok if you look to the price up there!!

This book was helpful when I decided to keep a newt because I was able to find out what I could feed it. It did not give information about a few of the species pictured in the book, but for a beginner there is information about feeding and housing that is useful.

Don't be a newt know-nothing!.......2000-04-04
This book is ideal for the salamander or newt neophyte-anyone who is just starting to keep these slimy but endearing critters as pets. Written by an author with dozens of pet books to his name, and published by T.F.H. Publications, one of the world's largest publishers of pet books, this slim volume covers all major topics that the would-be salamander and newt owner needs to know. It discusses the natural history of newts and salamanders, specifics on how to house them safely, what they eat and how and where to find or buy it, hygiene and health issues, reproduction, and more. The book also includes color photographs of a variety of salamanders and newts from around the world, including all major families and species found in the United States. Some of the photographs are startling; picture a tiger salamander eating a field mouse, for example. The book also includes several pages about the axolotl, a formerly exotic species that has become one of the most popular amphibian pets. This book is a great buy for the price, and is perfectly adequate for the beginner, although it may not do for the serious salamander breeder. Pick up this inexpensive volume before you even THINK about picking up that spotted thing that's crawling around under the log.

Sweet stories for all ages.......2004-05-23
This is actually my favorite book that I have read to my toddler. He loves the stories and the illustrations and I love the lessons learned. The book teaches about friendship, fear, the value of being unique, and the fact that everyone has some qualities that make them special. I recommend "Newt" for readers of all ages.
My 21 month old toddler LOVED this book!.......2001-10-18
This was the first book with a substantial storyline depending on text that my young toddler daughter was able to sit through and enjoy. She was able to relate to and fully understand the very lovely stories about Newt's relationships with the other characters, Mouse, Newt's Bug, and the moon. This book also helped to increase her vocabulary and deal with feelings related to fears about going to sleep in the dark. The illustrations are also lovely and easy for a child to relate to. While this book was written for older children learning to read, it is also a terrific book for a younger child being read to. My only hope is that Matt Novak will write more stories about Newt. He is such a great character.
A funny unique way to learn lessons of compassion and caring.......1999-11-01
This book will make you, your child, or even any adult who reads it, laugh. It is a book you will want to read to your child over and over again. Newt learns lessons along his daily routine that makes it easy for your reader to understand.

I recommend it for frog owners........2006-10-17
I think it's a good book, however, I was disappointed with the great lack of information provided on the care of salamanders, newts, and caecilians. There is though, a lot of good information on the care of frogs and toads.
Buy it !.......1996-12-23
Amphibians are creatures which live
their lives partly in water and partly on
land, generally with a larval aquatic
phase and an adult life on land. This can
pose particular problems when it comes
to their care in captivity. Compared to
other branches of animal husbandry, the
keeping of amphibians is still in its
infancy and there is a vital need for
more information - for the beginner and
advanced enthusiast.
In Keeping and Breeding Amphibians,
noted herpetologist Chris Mattison
provides expert guidance on the care and
breeding of newts, salamanders, frogs,
toads and caecilians. Much of the
information is available for the first time
in this ground-breaking book which is an
essential guide for both the amateur and
the professional.
The first section of the book deals with
general principles of biology, accom-
modation, equipment, environment
control, indoor and outdoor vivaria, food,
breeding and general care and health.
Then each of the three amphibian orders
is dealt with in detail, with a chapter on
each of the eighteen main families of
species suitable for keeping in captivity.
The text is illustrated throughout with
superb colour photographs taken by the
author.
The need for a responsible attitude to
keeping amphibians in captivity
underlies the wealth of information in
Keeping and Breeding Amphibians. With
many species under threat in their
natural habitats, this book is a major
step towards ensuring that the pet trade
may eventually be able to be based upon
captive-bred species, so that no species
need be taken from the wild.

Book Description
Nearly thirty years after the publication of the last detailed book on the newts and salamanders of Europe, this book at last provides a much needed, modern coverage of the ecology, behavior, evolution, and conservation of these fascinating amphibians. The author abandons the popular conception of amphibians as a primitive group poorly adapted to life on land. Indeed, he shows how the diversity of newt and salamanders life-styles underlines how this relatively small group of animals have survived in such diverse habitats as underground caves, mountain tops, tropical forests, and the Siberian tundra. Delightfully illustrated and fully referenced throughout, the book synthesizes much recent research into a lively and readable format that will be of interest to both experienced and inexperienced herpetologists and natural historians. Given recent concern over global amphibian declines, newts and salamanders have been the focus of considerable media attention and scientific work in recent years. This book describes how an understanding of the ecology and habitat requirements of these animals can lead to more effective conservation measures.
Key Features:
- Presents the first synthesis of research for nearly 30 years
- Reviews current conservation issues
- Provides up-to-date species accounts and color photos

don't buy this book-copy of original one-PRICES OUT OF LINE.......2005-11-20
AGAIN I SAY DON'T BUY THIS NEW BOOK, if you have the original one with the same name - BECAUSE IT HAS THE SAME PHOTOS !!! and the prices are out of line - totally wrong -....the author did nothing but add prices that are not current - and made a carbon copy of her original book without any new SUPER LOOKING VINTAGE LUCITE - BAKELITE BAGS...that you can find on the internet .....without wasting your money - sorry - but the original is a great book - without prices....and the new one is a way of letting the new collector think they have a "new book" with a "price guide" that is up to date - unfortunate - want to buy my copy cheap? A Certain Style is a stunning book to own for Lucite-Bakelite collectors.....
A delight to browse through and an indispensable guide for professional dealers and dedicated collectors.......2005-07-04
Now in an updated second edition, Plastic Handbags: Sculpture To Wear by Kate E. Dooner is a visual guide to the handbag as an art form and as a collectible. Complete with an up-to-date price guide, this compendium of vintage plastic handbags that were originally introduced in the late 1920s and early 1930s, continued in popularity through the 1960s. The more than 300 handbags showcased are arranged by their manufactured. Plastic Handbags: Sculpture To Wear is a delight to browse through and an indispensable guide for professional dealers and dedicated collectors.
A Better Than Average Reference Book.......2002-06-24
Although it's in no way as beautiful as "A Certain Style", this is a better than average reference book on plastic handbags, particularly for beginners. There are a few huge misidentification issues (eg: inclusion of the common and dreadful 1970s Merle Norman cosmetics giveaway as a legitimate 1950s handbag.) The price guide is out of touch with the market --- but what price guide isn't? Based on the sheer number of bags shown, it's definitely a must have for any lucite purse collector.
Is is art or is it a handbag? You gotta have this book!!.......2001-05-03
The photos may not be as large as those in "A Certain Style, the Art of the Plastic Handbag" (out of print now anyway), but there are many more bags featured and they are just as magnificent. The grouping of the bags according to manufacturer is helpful, too! The price guide is not perfect, but they never are, and this one still gives a good idea of which styles and features are more valuable. No lucite purse collecter can be without this book.
Good reference book.......1998-04-27
Not as glorious as "A Certain Style" is, but this one has more photos and is still a treat.

Book Description
When Beverley Nichols first published Garden Open Today in 1963, he was already well known for his "garden adventure" books such as Down the Garden Path and Merry Hall, whose unforgettable characters still live in the imaginations of present-day gardeners. In Garden Open Today, however, Nichols attempted a departure from his previous gardening books; he sought to distill 30 years of practical gardening experience in an entertaining fashion, and perhaps to strike back at critics who whispered that he was not a "real gardener." Our new facsimile edition includes a foreword and plant-name index by Roy C. Dicks.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining and informative reading.....not a "how to" book.......2003-06-27
Every year, the National Gardens Scheme Charitable Trust (www.ngs.org.uk) in the UK issues the "yellow book" listing details (dates, locations, composition of garden, entrance fee, etc.) about private gardens of England and Wales open to the public on special occasions when a sign will be posted saying "Garden Open Today." The 500+ page yellow book is a county by county guide to these gardens of "quality, character, and interest."
Beverly Nichols book GARDEN OPEN TODAY (first published in 1963) is the next best thing, a narrative tour describing his garden which before his death he opened occasionally to the public. The book is lovingly illustrated with `whimsical' drawings by William McLaren (one photograph of Nichols and his friend Reginald Gaskin collecting money for charity at the entrance to the Nichols' grounds).
Nichols was a "real gardener" who worked side-by-side with several hired gardeners described in his earlier books, including MERRY HALL, LAUGHTER ON THE STAIR, and SUNLIGHT ON THE LAWN. If you haven't discovered Beverly Nichols and you love gardening and/or visiting gardens, you are in for a treat. His books are humorous and instructive, and definitely for cat lovers. (He wrote several books about cats). In GARDEN OPEN TODAY, he takes you step by step through his current garden (he moved a few times and wrote books about several gardens) pointing out some of the more interesting flowers and features.
As usual, the best bits of Nichols' book are anecdotal. His chapter on flower arrangers (apparently the bane of his existence) is hilarious. Nichols was a "loose bunch" kind of guy who detested those who "tortured" flowers in order to twist them into unnatural shapes. He often said that flowers were best left in the garden or picked for a loose and natural arrangement reflecting the perennial border. I suppose I get a big kick out his anti-arranger diatribes because I come from a family of garden club members and garden club founders and have had many encounters with the similar characters. However, almost anyone can appreciate Chapter 18. `A matter of arrangement'
Nichols is a product of his times so his not-quite-politically-correct comments about women gardeners may rankle some, but those of us who grew up in less privileged times will be able to look past the semi-misogynist tone (and hopefully younger women too) and appreciated the interesting and informative material he includes. Besides, he spends more time on cats than women. I recommend this book for bedtime reading.
