For Calvin, union with God is by faith. It would be a mistake to attempt (as the Mannermaa school has done) to suggest that there is no forensic element to soteriology. However, neither Luther or Calvin made soteriology only forensic, as the Mannermaa school has suggested. It is both/and: both forensic and unia mystica. Overall, a very interesting and informative read.

intelligently written and great for everyone who loves st. bernard. books written by bernard are difficult to read, you really have to like this guy, he is very flowery and does not speak to us in our time. not contemporary. so in this book you only get small doses of bernard and it is very good. unlike leaders in the catholic church bernard does not shrink from giving priority to faith over good works. catholics today stress being good deed doers. god accepts us because of belief in Christ. this emphasis and other medieval thoughts present in bernard's mystical writings are a pleasure to read being examined by the scholarly author.

This book has been written by long time St Bernard fanciers and conformation judges, the Gwilliams of Coatham Kennels, England. Listed in the contents are subjects not previously included or only briefly touched on in other St Bernard books. The addition of a Hereditary Disorders/Conditions chapter is a bonus, as are the sections on Weaning and Socialisation. Feeding Tables which list the St Bernards daily requirements and the function of individual vitamins and minerals (including the results of deficiency or excess of these), are comprehensive. The aged St Bernard and Temperament are also covered in this responsibly written book. An American section, State by State, ensures that this book crosses the Atlantic. This book is right up there with the best St Bernard books I own.

GARDEN TRANSFORMATIONS by Bunny Guinness, is probably the most innovative gardening book I have purchased in a while. She purportedly (according to the cover) shares "Designer secrets and tricks of the trade." As I am not a designer, I can't vouch for the veracity of that claim, but I can share that I have reviewed and own a goodly number of garden design books and having gardened for over 60 years have some knowledge in the area of what will work and what won't plant-wise. Guinness has new (TO ME) ideas about enhancing the bones of the garden, an aspect I began to pay more attention to in recent decades. For one thing she shows how you can use pebbles, crushed stone, glass, timbers, and gravel, as well as large rocks, to highlight various aspects of your garden, so that in those dreary months of winter when most things are dead or dormant, the garden still looks wonderful.
Guinness organizes her material into "Colour" "Paint Techniques" "Boundaries" "Surfaces" "Plants" "Water and Lighting" and other chapter topics. My favorite is "Transforming Problem Sites" because, as every urban gardener knows, what the neighbors do affects your yard. You may need to mask what lies beyond with shrubs and/or vines, soften a wall with an espaliered shrub or a vine, or hide a heating element or trash receptacle. Guiness encourages you to think about "Buttresses" "Shrouds" "Fencing" and "Awnings" and other architectural elements for hiding, linking, or even enhancing a garden feature.
I got a big "Wow" when I opened Guinness' book. I think you will too when you see all the fab photos.

This book is an ideal resource for maximizing your outdoor space on a limited budget! It's full of wonderful and affordable outdoor decorating ideas and filled with incredible before and after photos. The author created eye-catching outdoor transformations using accessories, paint, spare furniture and low-cost ideas to turn rather drab outdoor spaces into beautiful and welcoming outdoor spaces--- all under $250. I found the book to be truly inspiring. Three well known national TV celebrities from HGTV and The Discovery Channel give the author and book many accolades. I rank it 5 stars.
Use color and repurposed indoor decor to create an inviting outdoor environment.......2006-05-10
This book gives the reader ideas on how to create an inviting outdoor living space on a budget. I live in the Southwest where outdoor living is a year 'round experience, and bought the book in hopes of developing a nice outdoor entertaining area. Ms. Peterson reminds the reader that painting isn't just for interiors. Paint has as great a bang for the buck outdoors as it does indoors. She gives a wide variety of sample palettes for the "color novice." She also teaches the reader about repurposing indoor decorative items to create an attractive outdoor living space. This is good news for those of us who have limited dollars and/or storage space -- it is much more practical to move indoor lamps, vases, cushions, etc. outside for a party and then take them back indoors to use day to day, than it is to purchase, maintain and also find storage for duplicate items to be used exclusively for outdoor entertaining. I hope other readers will find her ideas helpful, and enjoy the book as much as I have.
Budget Makeovers for Outdoor Living.......2006-03-13
If you aren't using your outdoor space much, it may be time for a makeover. This book takes rather blah patios and turns them into inviting outdoor living spaces. The best part is the price, as the author tries to keep each project under $250.
She is helped by the fact that most had decent furniture to start with, so her job was adding some cushions, plants and accessories for a polished look.
Probably the main message of the book is to pull your outdoor living space together with a unifying color scheme. Paint any furniture that doesn't match or is shabby. No need to shop for new items, just bring things from inside the house outside.
She breaks each project down into steps, showing how the changes meet the homeowners needs. I deducted one star since the book doesn't give actual how-to on the projects (sewing, painting).
It is useful to get ideas on grouping your furniture and using color for an attractive outdoor area (pool area, porch, balcony, patio, sunroom, courtyard, etc.)
I liked the idea of painting lines on concrete for a faux tile look. The book shows lots of colorful before and after photos.

Imagine coming to a beautiful garden. You need peace and tranquility. You desire to take in the beauty and peace of knowing that you are not there alone. You have entered a garden with many paths within its borders. Once visiting this garden, you will want to return often -- coming "Back to the Garden" is very simple -- all you need to do is open the pages of this book.
Like in a garden, where the grass and flowers grow, you will grow when inside its pages. You will find the different paths to self-awareness, self-discovery and self-acceptance. You can be at peace with your thoughts. "Back to the Garden" is a collection of many different stories about people from a wide range of walks of life.
