Your Baby and Bowser is a non-disciplinarian guide to avoiding potential problems between your dog and your child or grandchild. Small children tend to bring out the best and the worst of dogs. Children may unknowing startle a sleeping or eating dog. Caught unaware, even the best trained dog might react by growling or biting. The crying and flailing of infants may resemble prey behaviours or behaviours of a sick pup. In these cases, the dog may feel the need to stalk or play with the prey. Alternately, the animal may try to comfort the child or drag it to safety. Since dogs use their teeth to undertake these tasks, risk of injury is possible.
The author states that there are several important keys to avoiding potential accidents caused by natural dog behaviours such as chewing, biting, jumping, scratching, and stalking. One of these important keys is good training and proper dog handling. Another important key is socializing preparation before your child actually comes home. By far, however, it is important that your dog and child never be left alone together.
Your Baby and Bowser is an extremely well written, organized guide. This book details potential issues that can potentially occur between children and dogs. Furthermore, the author explains how many of these disasters are simply due to natural dog behaviours. Thus, such incidents are not normally the result of a premeditated, vicious attack by a bad dog. Moreover, the author explains how the dog owner can not only understand and identify these potential behaviours but also use this newfound knowledge to protect both the dog and the child. This book even contains details easy to use step by step training and includes various intuitive problem solving techniques.

Whilst this text was not a recommended text for my Australian investments course, it was more useful than any other reference material prescribed by my professional body and proved more than its value over the space of just a few weeks. I encourage especially those that may be sitting on the fence, thinking it is a lot of money (because it is), that this text is worth every cent if you are in need of the best derivatives pricing book that exists today - this is it.

I am in the first few chapters and finding the book easier to read than other financial books. I like the examples to explain the purpose of futures and options. The first few chapters introduce you to futures and options then gets into more advanced topics. I also got the student study guide. There are certain books that are well worth the price, this is one of them. It is not a "get rich quick" guide, but rather a book designed to give the reader an in depth understanding.

Like all too many PhD students trying to push their way into the already overcrowded quant. finance job-space, I too had heard that Hull is the "bible" of quant. finance, and it should be the first book you should read.
WRONG. Dead wrong. Hull should be the LAST book you should read, and I mean it literally. That is, you definitely SHOULD read Hull, but after reading some good quant. finance books and getting some intuition behind what is going on.
The good parts of Hull are:
1) breadth of topics covered - there is no other single book that covers the range of topics that Hull does.
2) some amount of feel of real markets that it gives (all this means is that it describes the mechanics of markets).
For someone just starting out learning quant. finance, however, the above two become big stumbling blocks. The breadth of topics means that several topics are covered in a, and I am being kind, patchy manner. In fact, you can go through quite a lot of Mr. Hull's babble about "worlds" (something he uses interchangeably for "measure") without understanding whatever the heck a risk-neutral measure is. There are risk-neutral worlds, forward-neutral worlds, stock-worlds...and you don't know the underlying simple, simple principle, so you just keep following him, and he goes on and on...
Another example - Black's formula in fixed income products - he just goes on and on about its applications to this that and the other (bond options, swaptions...), discusses the "validity of Black's formula" (which supposedly tells you that it is more general that it is usually believed to be, but tells you neither how general it is, nor how general it is believed to be)...All this without giving you the simple, one sentence reasoning behind the Black formula.
Time and again in the book there are formulae that seem to be just pulled out of thin air. There are better compilations of formulae (Haug, for example), so I don't quite understand what the idea is. You keep wondering HOW a valuation formula came about, because you want to know what assumptions lie behind that valuation, and how to change it if some of those assumptions change...But as frequently as not, you will be left turning pages in the vain hope of trying to find out.
Add to that a poorly composed index, ill defined terms sprinkled all over the book, hand-waving galore, and it equates to hours of frustration. Just understanding clearly what is being talked about takes a lot of page turning, searching for definitions and so on.
And don't go by people who look down folks wanting to be precise. I am not talking about any ivory tower precision - I am talking about real, practical precision. The precision you need in a book to be able to answer a non-rote question properly. That precision is not there in most of Hull.

There are many exercises after each chapter of Hull's book and they help a lot in understanding the chapter's content and many questions are very classic. You've got to have this solution manual to know the answers! More importantly, many of the homework questions and even exam questions in my class were very similar to the exercises and I benefited a lot from having this solutions manual! Thank you!

Well, what can I say. Hull's solutions manual is practical but not entirely useful book. I need more professional solved cases, specially of the real life. The exercises are very simple. Any way, it's a good manual for beginners in derivatives instruments.

Hull's Solution Manual is an excellent addition to the text. It allows an individual to do problems following each chapter with in depth answers that may not be provided by professors. The questions and answers allow for understanding the material.

Relevant, Insightful, Provocative, Life-Changing. A must-read!.......2005-09-28
Once again Peck's integrative approach (integrating psychology, spirituality (not dogma), and philosophy with practical experience) has produced a work of profound depth and value. In our times of "global war," the doctor's ideas about community making and peace are a prescription we could all benefit from.
In the context of spirituality, Peck draws from the Christian tradition as well as Judaism and eastern philosophy (e.g. Zen). However, readers of any religious persuasion should find abundant value and wisdom in this book.
On a personal note, his portrayal of a healthy non-dogmatic Christianity made me want to become a Christian when I first read his work many years ago. This book, along with the "Road Less Traveled" series had a profound impact on my life and will remain at eye-level on my ever-growing bookshelf forever.
[If you're interested in good non-dogmatic and readable Christian theology and life-changing ideas, and find that you're not getting any at Church... as I had found... I also highly recommend works by Richard Rohr.]
Peck Mixes Spirituality with Common Sense.......2001-05-05
Community isn't what we think it is. Peck does an impeccable job of explaining true community and why it is so elusive in our society. Though he mentions over and over that he is an idealist, Peck presents some very intelligent arguments as to why a community approach just makes sense. He isn't naive either. He says the road to community can be painful and extremely hard.
A developmental model psychospirituality.......2000-10-26
After being catapulted to fame by his first book--the best-selling "The Road Less Travelled" --psychiatrist Morgan Scott Peck follows it up with another one on psychology and spirituality. The chapter that captured my interest without let was the one on his theory of psychospiritual development. He delineates four stages, each representing a more mature level of development than the preceding stage.
Peck claims that he arrived at this theory through experience, although he footnotes the fact that there have been many theories on psychological development prior to his, the most recent being a six-stage faith developmental model (see "Stages of Faith" by James W. Fowler)
Although Peck's elucidation of his theory is informal and sketchy, I find his model of psychospiritual development idiosyncratic enough to be regarded as a separate theory by itself.
Peck aptly calls it psychospiritual since it has both psychological and spiritual/religious dimensions. It is much akin to the developmental theories in psychology, yet it has a very strong religious flavor--Stage 1 being the lack of spirituality/ethical behavior, Stage 2 as orthodoxly religious, Stage 3 as a time of religious skepticism or atheism, and Stage 4 the mystical level.
Yet I believe Peck's theory tends to be ethically judgmental in character, i.e., it explicitly holds the higher stages as undeniably better than the lower ones, and tends to describe people in ethical terms--'chaotic/unprincipled' (Stage 1), or dogmatic (Stage 2), or principled (Stage 3)
Nevertheless, I see the veracity of such categories, albeit demanding much care and caution. Pigeonholing, specially in ethical terms, is dangerous business and can easily be misused and abused. However, I believe that Dr. Peck has realized the limitations of his theory and has provided caveats and exceptions in his later books, such as in "Further Along the Road Less Travelled"

I really enjoyed this charming account of Bill Ludwig's life. I have to say that I'm glad I'm not on his bad side, because he spares none of his enemies!
Still, it is a sentimental and lovely book, betraying a golden hearted yet savvy businessman. A must for any drum collectors.

If You Know Nothing About Chemotherapy............2001-09-09
I bought this book when my Mother began to have chemotherapy
treatments. None of us knew what we were up for. I think this
book is well written, and there are a good deal of straight
forward facts, drugs used in chemo and information about them,
side effects to expect and ways to cope with them. It's a good
overview of what chemotherapy is in a perfect world. It created
hope, and underlined that chemo today is not that bad, and many
people barely feel the effects. It didn't address the reality
that chemotherapy is horrible to go through, destroys your body,
and is worse than cancer itself. I rate it 3 stars for giving a
happy but thorough overview of what chemo is, but it lacks
giving the harsh realities that someone must know about before
making the chemotherapy decision.
