Thoughts to live by........2007-01-09
I found this book at a very low point in my life. I picked this book up at my vet's office and read it while a procedure was being done on my very ill puppy. It lifted my spirits, and gave me some much needed hope. Both my puppy and I are doing much better!

This book is an excellent introduction to the world of dogs and how they impact on our lives. As a pet therapy partner with my dog, Coco, I recommend this book to everyone who is involved with their pets and what to have some real insight into their animals' behavior and needs.
K-9 simplicity.......2001-12-06
A delightful pictorial of how dogs of all ages and breeds can teach us the basic and simple lessons in life. Each picture is accompanied by a telling phrase that gets the message across. The table of contents includes such subjects as Health, Self Esteem, and Day-to-Day living. In the end the author sums it up with a smiling golden lab with a lolling yet perfect pink tongue, below him is the inscription, "Life is, on the whole, pretty doggone good". That just about says it all.
I found myself enjoying the pictures as well as the wisdom imparted. It is a book I am able to pick up again and again. My favorites being the chocolate lab puppies. This is a cute book for the dog lover in your family. Kelsana 12/05/01
A beautiful and heartwarming little book.......2001-07-15
Excellent photography combines with pithy phrases to create a collection of wisdoms shared by anyone who has lost his or her heart to a dog. Just over 100 pages are devoted to sections "On Health," "On Self-Esteem," "On Interacting With Others," "On Self-Improvement," and "On Day-to-Day Living." And what words of wisdom these are! Those who DON'T own dogs would do well to pull this book out now and then to gain some perspective on the things that really are important in life, scaled down to essential simplicity. A ridiculous little dog with fangs bared is captioned, "If you are mean, people will try to avoid you." Break out this book when the mean, fang-baring people of the world get you down.

This picture and saying book captures the heart and soul of all dogs everywhere, from the most carefree puppy to the most loyal senior canine citizen. It reminds us to not take life so seriously in our hectic world, and enjoy the basic and mundane of life, for that is where joy is truly found. It reminds us of the most common courtesies often forgotten in this man-eat-man world. All life's lessons can be learned from a dog, and they are in here, in some of the most poignant, beautiful, and joyful pictures I have yet seen of our beloved dogs. Worth it as a gift for yourself, your friends, your family.

I collect a few things including political memorobilia, silver electric plate, books and ceramics. I bought it to a) make sure I don't overpay in my areas of interest b) to identify anything I could buy and sell on at a profit.
It paid for itself almost instantly - I had no idea digital watches from the 1970's were collectible!! Glad I am a horder.
Great illustrations, interesting and fun to flick through. Good for anyone who loves garage sells or ebay. And anyone who makes a living in this area.
A helpful, easy-to-use, collectibles guide.......2003-03-18
This valuable resource guide not only offers pricing information, but 'closer look' background and history on many, many items. I was able to use this book to take stock of items I currently have and become more knowledgeable about designers and collections I had not yet discovered. The information is concise and readable; the visuals are beautifully done. A big bonus at the end includes a directory of auctioneers, clubs and societies, and, my particular favorite --Internet resources. I've learned a lot from this book and refer to it often. All in all, a very accesible, enjoyable book.

Good but not the best .............2004-12-08
This is a comprehensive, well illustrated guide. Like all guides of this sort, it can't cover everything. If you have a particular interest in a specific field then this book will not work for you (e.g. if you collect Silver E.P. from the 30's this book covers off on one manufacturer well). If you want a general price guide, can draw inferences from items of a similar age, quality, style and market this book helps.
In both style and content it is similar to Miller's: Antiques Price Guide 2005 by Elizabeth Norfolk. I think Norfolk's book has a definate edge; although it is a little more expensive.
Neither book is a "how to appraise" guide - they don't claim to be. Neither are they completely comprehensive - they couldn't be. They are illustrative guides of current market prices. If you are buying for this purpose you wont be dissapointed with either.
Pretty pictures, but not much helpful advice.......2003-06-19
This book has hundreds of very impressive photos of specific items, noting their defects, markings, and value. However, unless you happened to run across the exact same item, the information is next to useless. While it is interesting to see an unusual art deco lamp, I'd be more interested in meatier topics, such as (1) how prevalent is art deco?; how hard to find?; (2) what should you be looking for in an art deco piece?; (3) what are the trends? Is this passe? Up-and-coming? Likewise depression glass, Shaker furniture, Americana, and old toys. Instead of a pretty coffee table book, I'd appreciate the value of the author's experienced guidance much more

This is verging on being a catalog........2001-05-02
You would get a hernia trying to carry this around to antique malls. This book weights at least 5 lbs.
It is well laid out with a section on how to use the book. Most of the pictures are black and white with special designated sections called "Colour Review". There is a periods and styles chart. And lots of advertisements with phone numbers. Various disciplines are covered; some are Irish antiques, carousel animals, Poole pottery, majolica, and ceramics, and French provincial furniture.
I actually obtained it for the section on glass. There are several good descriptions and trademark displays. It mostly targets 18th and 19th century glass. I would like it more if this book had described production methods. However it does cover what it promised "Prices"

Not very practical.......2004-04-29
I have an interest in vintage Honda motorcycles, so I bought this book as a reference. There were only 3 (THREE) Honda's covered! This book might make for some interesting browsing if your interest is pre-1960 (or even pre WW-II) cycles. Many different manufacturers are shown, but only a handful of each one.
It has no practical use for anyone interested in actively buying or selling. There just aren't enough models covered.
For classic bike seekers - a fine refference.......2000-07-18
For the international classic-motorcycle-collector this is a comprehensive book on the different antique and classic bikes that are available in the European market, mainly in the UK. It covers mostly the known models in detail, sometimes lacking in the more popular ones. The pricing of the Guide is based on the British market but as far as I could compare to the actual values I encountered - there are differences (but that may be acceptable). The model pricing doesn't take in account the codition of the bike and in some cases its availability (and market demand), but is fair. I found it very useful (as the managing secretary of the Israel Classic & Collectors Vehicle Club) in aiding many of our members to value their purchases from abroad and while searching for finds in other European countries - with a very good feedback on most parts. The book is also a good refernce for details on rare bikes and models, although it is far from being an encyclopedia or an official reference book.

This book has colorful drawings suggesting gardens [to scale] for all kinds of settings - shade, sun, slopes, corners, and narrow strips, as well as color photos of the plants and suggested varieties of specific species.
Included are directions for supporting structures such as paths and trellises, general plant care, and soil preparation.
It's a thorough book with lots of ideas in an attractive format.
A surprise, excellent.......2003-06-01
I had low expectations for this when I ordered it. I figured it would be one of those overly general "how to" books that leave out much of the important information. I was surprised to find that it has very specific plans for a variety of garden situations, plans which already show specific groupings of specific plants.
I found this very helpful because I'm not particularly experienced in designing a landscape, nor am I wealthy enough to afford a landscape designer. There is a design for every corner of my new house, tailored to sunlight, etc. I can follow the plans verbatim and end up with a landscape that looks like it was professionally designed, or I can make small changes to personalize it. This is, as the previous reviewer commented, much easier than starting from scratch.
Definately worth the money.
One Stop Shopping for NW Garden Landscaping.......2002-10-26
THE BACKGROUND: I know next to nothing about plants, and what little I do know is mainly for plants that grow well in the Deep South, where I grew up. I now have a cute house with a remarkably boring yard 2500 miles away from the "Deep South" - in Seattle, to be exact.
THE GOAL: create some nice-looking, *low maintenance* landscaping for the yard, but without having to become an avid amateur gardener, carpenter or landscape designer.
THE TECHNIQUE: as is my style, I go in for complete overkill and immediately buy a dozen books on the subject of landscaping and gardening - must be thorough in my research, you understand. I pour through them, make lists, check with local nurseries, draw detailed plans, etc., and after many hours of work and decision-making, finally decide what to buy and where to plant them.
THE RESULT: 90% of the plants I finally choose as appropriate to the area, low maintenance, and nifty looking, are in this ONE BOOK already, and there were plenty of others in this one book that could have substituted for the remaining 10%. My planting layouts also fairly strongly resemble several of the suggested layouts detailed in this book.
THE LESSON: Should have started and stopped with this one. I coulda fit in tuba lessons or something!
Buy this book, Cascadia gardeners and landscapers! It's what you need! Oh, and it also has tons of useful information on creating walls, fences, gates, paths, garden layouts, pruning, planting, etc.
VERY highly recommended.
