There is no greater love than the love from a Vizsla. I own 2 boys, brothers, and this book is right on. My boys are very different exhibing different personality traits although they have the same parents, 1 litter apart from one another. A must read for anyone who is contemplating owning this very active, loving, tender, breed.

What an outstanding collection of information on the Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer. A sine qua non for those wanting information on the vizsla: ancestory, breeding, history, personality, behavior, mood, training, feeding, grooming, health care. Mr. Coffman covers every aspect, from interesting general knowledge to practical information and advice. I have owned a vizsla for a year and this book has enhanced the enjoyment of my the dog as an animal, a pet and a extraordinary companion. If you are contemplating acquiring a vizsla or are an owner looking for insight and guidance, I recommend this book to you as being well worth the price.

This is an excellent book with so much information on Vizsla's. It is practical and will help you better understand this breed and how they work and think. I would recommend it to any new owner or anyone interested in learning the right way to care for, train and enjoy this wonderful dog breed.

This book was right on target with my new Vizsla puppy. It has tons of information, including breed history, AKC standard, growth guidelines, etc. I gave this book 4 stars because it included pictures, but they weren't in color. I feel that for the price, they could've included a few color pictures. This book really sums up the breed very well. I would recommend it to any new Vizsla owner!

This is a good book for someone who wants to learn more about the breed! It may seem to be small, but it's packed with information-a great value for the price. If you want to learn more about training your dog, then you may want to purchase another book for more specifics.

This book was extremely helpful to me when I got my first Vizsla Dog. It answered MANY questions for me on some issues I was rather confused about or just didn't know at all. This book is not really "fun" to read or look at but it has wonderful information in it
Hard core book on Vizlas - not a coffee table book.......1999-09-19
This book is a must have for someone who is interested in the background of the breed but it is not an easy or fun read. More of a reference book with old, sometimes grainy photographs (there are some bizarre ones like a V-dog happily holding a dead cross fox in its mouth). The hard core V-dog lover will want this for the bookshelf but I don't take it down to look at all that often. If you are looking for a book on Vizlas that is contemporary and full of color photos and advice on how to deal with this high maintenance breed in the modern world - this is not the book for you.
Beautiful cover, but not so inside........1999-02-18
This was my first Viszla book, ordered through a magazine. I expected color pictures inside, such as the one on front, or the ones in other dog books (about other breeds) that I own. All of the pictures were black and white. The text was informative, but boring. I'll probably return it.
There are better Vizsla books to be had........1998-11-25
This book is relatively informative, but it is somewhat short and the format is not too interesting. We returned our copy of The Complete Vizsla for The Versatile Vizsla.

Cliff Boggs has been working with Vislas for some forty years, and his depth of knowledge is well worth any hassle you may have to go through to get a copy of either editions of his book . The chapters on history, and the pictures of early Vizslas are an education in themselves. This was the first book I bought on Vizslas back when I had just my first dog. While there is probably no perfect breed book(it would be too big to read)both of these books, edition one and two have breed information that any vizsla owner should have at their fingertips, especially if thinking of showing, trialing, or breeding. I recommend you get this, read it cover to cover, and then go out and buy all the other vizsla books!

Looking for a book on contemporary silver?
If you go to the Web and enter "contemporary silver" in a search engine, what comes up? Not much, right? Go into Amazon.com and look there as well. You'll find just one book: Contemporary Silver: Commissioning, Designing, Creating. Sure, you'll find a few out-of-print books published in Europe, but who has the time to brush up on their German? The authors of Contemporary Silver are Benton Seymour Rabinovitch and Helen Clifford, Ph.D. Rabinovitch is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Washington, Seattle, a member of the Silver Society (London), and Honorary Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. He is a longtime collector of antique silver and serving pieces and is the author of Antique Silver Servers for the Dining Table. Clifford has a number of degrees, is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, member of the Silver Society (London), and an honorary member of the Association of British Designer-Silversmiths. She has written and curated exhibitions on historical and contemporary silver.
The two authors have produced a book that is both beautiful and inspiring. Rabinovitch commissioned 62 notable silversmiths from the United States and Great Britain to design and create silver serving pieces in fish-server or cake-slice form. The result is an incredible range of servers in every conceivable technique. From the minimalist to the baroque, from the abstract to the representational, all are meant for practical use, though cleaning some of the more intricate pieces would certainly be a challenge.
These servers demonstrate mastery of the craft, and offer a comparative survey in technique and design between the two countries.
Each of the 62 pieces illustrated (75 have been commissioned to date) has a full description, including materials used, dimensions, and narrative, an artist's philosophy/statement, and brief personal history. Rabinovitch also comments on how he chose each silversmith for the commission.
Within the 160 pages lie chapters on the commissioning process; historical background on servers in the 18th and 19th centuries; silver design in Britain and the U.S. between 1950 and 2000; understanding the collection; the collection itself; and a helpful glossary of terms.

I received this book from a friend who knew I was in the middle of a yard restoration. I picked it up late in the evening the day I received it, then couldn't put it down. I was up until 2:30 A.M., entranced by the beautiful photos that not only made me want to slide inside the scenery, but it makes me think I can grow things like this. I can't wait to get started. I have always loved tropical plants, but as a home gardener I never seem to find the time to do the research. Bob Riffle did the work for me.
I believe this beautiful book will bring out the adventurous gardener in some of us. For those who just love to study plants and admire their beauty, the photography is wonderful. For me, this book came just in time.
lov'n Tropicals.......2004-06-18
I have been tropical gardening for almost 20 years here in the Midwest. I am always trying new things and combinations. It was great to finally get the book. What a treasure of information. I used it to do a 50 banana display last year in my garden. The pictures were so rich that I wanted to grow all of them. This book is great for the intermediate gardener. You have to have some idea of what your doing to get the most out of this book. I liked that all the plants were together not seperated so if I didn't know it was a shrub or a tree I could find it. The cheat sheet at the start of each genus entry was great it made scanning the book for something easier. All in All a great book
Better Suited to scholars than Casual Gardeners.......2004-06-15
I received the Encyclopedia and found it to be just that. The pictures are all clustered on a few pages in the center of the book while the first and last parts are dedicated to an encyclopedia britannica style listing of the plants without pictures. The plants are alphabetical so it's great if you want to know more about a plant and know it's latin name. If you're looking to flip through a book and pick out the ones you like, this isn't the book for you. I'd recommend Hardy Palms and Palm-Like Plants. It's cheaper, and the plants are grouped together by typs along with pictures and descriptions of each. It may not be as thorough, but it's more helpful for those of us who don't know what we're doing yet.

I have a passion for tropical plants, and this book is my tropical bible. I find the plant descriptions highly informative and the pictures are an added bonus. Bob Riffle's selection of the plants in this book is one of the most inclusive I have ever found. A must have for the tropical gardener!!!
sorry I can't agree.......2000-12-28
okay, I know some readers gave this 5 stars but I was rather disappointed with the photo's in this book considering the price. The pics to me were quite small generally. Additionally, there are only photo's for a few of the plants described. Most of the entries had no illustrations at all. In other words, let's say there are an average of 4-6 plants described for each 2 page spread, {left and right}, there might be one, very infrequently two, very small, washed out looking photos for only one out of all the plants listed on that page. Also, I have to say that the pictures in general were not only small but they also seemed like they were very old; ie.. rather like drab pics from someone's 1964 honeymoon in Hawaii. For what are incredibly colorful and dramatic plants, these small pictures seemed almost monochromatic! {and considering the subject matter I would consider this an almost criminal offense !!}. Sorry to be so critical but there it is; this is actually the first book I have ever had to return that I bought from Amazon and the first book put out by Timber Press that I was not utterly thrilled with. Normally Timber Pr. can be counted on for really fantastic stuff. In fact they have a few other titles that cover the same material much better than this. I highly recommend you take a look at those before you fork over the $'s for this one. My apologies to the author.
