If you think of your pet as a family member, it only follows that Fluffy should come along on family vacations. But between "no pets allowed" signs and over-the-top surcharges, it seems like your only option for accommodations is a tent. For travel anywhere in North America, those options are about to change, thanks to Traveling with Your Pet, a comprehensive and easy-to-use guide for AAA-rated lodgings that welcome four-legged guests.

Most of the book reads like any standard travel book. Arranged alphabetically by state, you'll find hotels in both small towns and major cities, with a list of icons showing what amenities you can expect. Instead of descriptions of restaurants or spas, you'll find a sentence or two outlining pet policies. Here, a careful reading can save you a bundle. Although many hotels are happy to house animals, surcharges range anywhere from $5 total to $100 per night and, in some cases, only particular species of small size are accepted. This section cautions readers to confirm the current policy in advance. The last thing you want to discover upon arrival with your two labs is that the policy was changed the day before you made the reservations.

Other than these listings, information is relatively limited, but can be helpful to newcomers to the world of pet vacations. Contact information is provided for several airlines, as well as emergency animal health-care suggestions and advice for buying safe traveling equipment. Dog owners will appreciate the list of off-leash dog parks throughout the U.S., which includes rules for national parks and forests. In fact, with all its practical information, you may find this book puts your regular pet sitter out of a job! --Jill Lightner

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff here.......2007-07-26

While this book arrived too late for the actual planning of my recent trip to pick up a dog it would have saved me hours of research had I had it from the beginning. If the listings aren't complete there is certainly enough information there to give you the opportunity to find what you are looking for. Just having the central reservation lines of the large motel chains is a help in finding out if the individual properties accept animals is worth the price of the book in itself.

I found it spotty in finding information on where public areas that accepted my dog on or off leash could be located. I picked up (a lot) more and better information from the surfing the internet and talking to folks along the way.

Even with its shortcomings it was worth the money - I'll use it frequently.

4 out of 5 stars A necessity when taking car trips with dog.......2007-03-22

7 months ago I packed a U-haul to move from Ohio to Washington (state). My two puppies made the journey with me. I don't know what I would have done without the book. It was invaluable to finding lodgings for the night. As with AAA's hotel rankings and reviews, most were dead on.

The book advertises that it contains information on dog parks. I do not recommend this book if you want information on dog parks. It would be better to research the area and its dog parks ahead of time.

Good guide to have with you in your travels with your pet.

5 out of 5 stars Traveling with Your Pet by AAA.......2007-01-03

Excellent, accurate book that allowed us to plan our trip without worrying about where to stay with our pet. I loaned it to a friend who was traveling out west and they loved the book so much I gave it to them and now have to buy another copy! I keep it on file should we ever have to evacuate due to a hurricane. We'll all go to the same hotel with our pets!

4 out of 5 stars Reliable guide for pet-friendly lodging.......2006-08-17

Just put this newly purchased guide to the test during a trip through parts of Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas with our 60-pound dog. The hotel and motel listings are very accurate and up-to-date, so we had few surprises when calling to book rooms or arriving at properties. The only improvements I would suggest are more recommendations for outdoor dog play places (especially those that are leash-free) and for restaurants with outdoor dining areas that permit dogs. We had fairly good success improvising leash-free play zones in national forest areas off the highways and were able to find some eating places with patios or decks that permitted dogs...

5 out of 5 stars A Good Overview of the History of Lighting.......2002-04-15

Filled with beautiful photographs and catalogue pictures, this lovely hardback book is packed with useful information about antique lighting in the United States. Focusing on lighting for domestic household use, Ms. Maril skillfully explains how the evolution in technology of producing light, influenced the development of lighting styles.
Although the current price guide should be updated and the quality of some of the catalogue reproduction could be improved, this is the best reference book available on the sibject. I highly recommend purchasing this book for your library.

4 out of 5 stars It has a valued place on my shelf!.......2001-06-01

I really like this book as a general reference. Great visuals and wonderful aesthetic. Great definition of "Fluid Lamps". Using color photographs and rare catalog material, this book concentrates on domestic lighting, making this an important book for home restorers and decorators seeking to capture an authentic look in their homes. The informative text and history of the American lighting industry makes it a welcome, valuable addition to the libraries of historians, collectors, and others interested in the development of American design and technology. Advanced researchers may express disappointed but for a general overview you'll want it for your library. It has a welcomed place on my shelf.

5 out of 5 stars The only book of its kind.......2000-05-31

Few books are available which cover the subject of late 19th and early 20th century lighting. I found this book to be rich with information and very useful in identifying some of the pieces I have collected over the years. Other than, "Antique Lamp Buyer's Guide", also by Ms. Maril, there is little reference material for collectors so this is definitely a book worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars A gorgeous book with lots of information about old lamps........1999-09-09

I've been collecting reverse painted lamps for ten years and I found Ms. Maril's book very helpful in providing information about the various manufacturers who made these lamps at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Unlike a lot of picture books on antiques, Maril explains her subject and provides an overview of lighting technology and styles.

2 out of 5 stars An average attempt in a rich subject.......1999-08-04

As an antique reproduction manufacturer, I find this book very limited and barely touching the rich depth of this area of American History. Ancestors populated the east coast since 1595 have first hand knowledge, written descriptions and actual lanterns and chandeliers throughout the periods. This book rarely indicates the history nor the flavor and texture of the various periods American Lighting has past though. The pictures are nice.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PRODUCT,.......2007-01-13

    The Corrective Hair Coloring book.
The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of all those developments and the current education necessary to become an expert corrective hair colorist, regardless of the hair color product you choose to use. As you progress through color theory, selection of base colors, overviews of lighteners and bleaches, and selection of hydrogen peroxide vol. you'll increase you hair color confidence.By working through the experiments, you'll develop and expand the analytical skills that allow you to approach any situation in the salon with self-assurance.Every stylist should have this book as a reference manual for daily use.

    1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2006-12-11

I have been a professional cosmetologist for 8 years now and was looking for a book to help with corrective color as I lack some confidence when a client comes to me with color problems. When I heard of this book I thought it would have the answers I was looking for. I was very very disappointed to find this book had nothing to do with color correction. It is nothing more than the basics one learns in cosmetology school. What a waste of money. It sickens me even more that I spent a great deal of money on a thin, scrawny, half-sized book. I will sell it on ebay or to a student to try and recover some of my loss. I wouldn't even give this a 1 star rating, but there isn't a selection for zero stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Like a color class in a book!.......2004-12-20

This book was very useful to me as a hairdresser who'd taken a many-year absence from hairdressing & found myself wanting to return to the field, but not feeling all that confident with color.

It alleviated my fears of working with color, in particular, corrective hair color on hair that may not be in the best condition. The book is basically designed as a class. It first gives you a no-nonsense, succinct breakdown of the color wheel (which I needed to review); explains how/why color/peroxide works (basics, but what so many hairdressers lack, in lieu of the "accidents" I've seen in salons); then guides you thru taking swatches, varrying levels of peroxide, different colors & lighteners, & doing practice/test sessions on multiple swatches to see your results first-hand, and BEFORE you work on a client, making needed adjustments as you go along (such as a client with very porous hair). Perhaps this is why several students who left reviews here were unhappy, since they're not at this advanced level. You do need a professional background to absorb the material, and also need the motivation to practice what's suggested. This is not a guide for the average consumer who wants to color their hair with over-the-counter products, as they, and perhaps beginner or unmotivated students, as well, won't understand the material.

Yes, it is a small book, but that's the point & the beauty of this book (no pun intended!). As the reviewers from the salon told you, they keep this manual in the backroom, so it may be used as such. I'm sure they do great color in their salon. If I'm questioning what to do on a client, I don't want to frantically page thru a textbook, but instead want an easy-to-access manual to follow with instructions/directions/guidelines right in front of me.

The chapters are short and to the point. Latter chapters present your learning objective for each chapter, present multiple problems, and offer multiple solutions for each problem to correct them, including cautions to consider! As in earlier chapters, you're encouraged to practice EACH problem on swatches, as hairdressers know that different products yield different results. It's like having a colorist at your side! But if you just need to know which level color to use to bring a natural level 4 to a 7, the #'s right there for you to just look up.

I initially logged on to sell my copy, but after re-reading portions of the book while waiting to list, I realized that I still had some more practice to do, that this information was too valuable to be without, and I changed my mind to keep this as a reference book for myself.

    1 out of 5 stars Sparse & elementary........2000-07-09

Does not touch on meaningful corrective hair color techniques. Very little info or content here, and what is here is outdated. Rather insulting to put this before any reasonably educated person much less a student or professional. Lots of so-called "exercises" that take up lots of white space and yield nothing of substance relating to corrective hair color. The color wheel info and theory can be found in childerns' books. Disappointing...actually a rip-off. I've asked for a refund.

    4 out of 5 stars Corrective Hair Coloring A Hands-On Approach.......2000-03-28

Thank you Tom Sollock! No more going in the back room, mixing your formulas and praying to the color gods! This book eliminates the guess work.

      Book Description

These volumes are designed to be the most complete guide to pharmacokinetics (PK) and its role in drug development. Geared toward graduate level students and scientists in the areas of clinical pharmacology and PK, the volumes will fill a gap between the academic science and the practical application of that knowledge in drug development. Volume 1 discusses the role that PK plays in selected clinical study designs, including first-time-in-man, biopharmaceuticals, and special population studies. Volume 2 details the key regulatory and development paradigms in which PK supplements decision-making during drug development.

        Book Description

The Ugaritic Baal Cycle offers a translation and the first commentary on the Ugaritic Baal Cycle. The longest and most important religious text from ancient Ugarit, the Baal Cycle witnesses to both the religious worldview of Ugarit and the larger background to many of the formative religious concepts and images in the Bible. The volume treats introductory matters such as date, order and continuity of the tablets, the history of interpretation, and finally a new proposal for the interpretation of text drawing on the insights of previous views as well as newer evidence. The commentary proper provides bibliography, text, textual notes, literary structure and detailed commentary for each column in the first two tablets.

              Book Description

This illustrated book continues themes in Central European cultural history treated elsewhere with the intention of presenting an interdisciplinary study of early medieval socio-cultural developments.

A continuation of the preceding books, this volume examines the archeological evidence of the groups who settled Central Europe. It aims to amplify the information recorded during the late Roman Empire about societies, social dynamics and ethnological contexts by examining their material culture. The language of significant objects complements the literature of significant texts.

The three parts of the book inform of the historical and archeological evidence; elaborate the socio-cultural conclusions provided by archeology; examine the system of values as reflected in the forms of artistic expression. The study of objects helps clarify the contours of the Germanic populations of pre-Carolingian Central Europe.

I was a student of Dr Schutz's several years ago. Despite the fact that my carreer established itself outside of the realm of cultural history, I still use this book in my personal research on pre-Christian Germanic culture. Dr Schutz provided an extensive overview of Germanic cultural artefacts, separated into major tribal groups from the earliest mention of the group in question and up to the beginning of Carolingian Europe.

Many of the phototgraphs presented in the book were made by Dr Schutz himself, largely based on artefacts found in German museums, mostly inaccessable to a North American reader. This book is a must-read for any serious student of Central European culture and history.

3 out of 5 stars Lovely book for the Victorian & Edwardian art scholar.......2003-12-01

I purchased this book primarily because I wanted to relive a very pleasant afternoon spent in 1977 when I first visited the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight, Chesire, Gr. Britain.

This book is beautifully illustrated with many black and white illustrations plus full page color photos -- though I must admit I wish there'd been more color used.

My only critique concerns the actual tone of the book: it is really aimed at the art scholar than the casual observer and thus it would have more appeal to someone who had studied the art in the Victorian & Edwardian eras.

All things said, I don't regret purchasing this book and it brought back many happy memories for me.
