The best book written about Golden Retrievers ever!!!.......2006-06-17
The best book ever written about Golden Retrievers!!!
This lady is a real professional. She employs world class specialists from both sides of Atlantic. It is the "must read" book especially for Americans. There are a lot of beautiful pictures and this is a great help for people to see how the Golden Retriever should look like. I just hope this book will get translated into other languages too. In the last 20 years this fabulous breed has spread incredibly in many countries even not covered in this book. In this case this book is a little behind but this cannot be hold against the book. This is a nature of all the books. Additionally one has to wait till changes will have more permanent character. I am sure that in the next edition of this book the author will try to update this. I just hope that all my clients will read this book prior to a puppy buying decision. This would save me a lot of time and it will set them on the right track. This would be better for the breed, for the dog owners and ultimately best for their dogs. What else can I say - I love Goldens and I love this book!
Great Book.......2005-07-30
This book is really great. It covered everything I wanted to know about my new golden puppy and the pictures are awesome. I recommend this to anyone.
Can't Get a Better Book About Goldens.......2003-11-21
This book is absolutely fabulous -- you can't get a better book about Goldens. For the beginner, it has all the information in there about how to housebreak him and when to take him to the vet, but it also has the Golden only type stuff, like how to teach puppies not to be afraid to swim. But it is really best for the expert, because there are so many photos of great Goldens and so many placed next to each other -- a British next to an American -- to show the differences in type. This is a really big book with tons of photos and easy to read and really tells you everytthing you need to know. It is interesting to see how the two coutnries diverged in their idea of what the structure should be. It was written by half British writers and half American and oh boy what that committee must have been like!
Content goes beyond basic "how to shampoo" and "how to feed".......1999-02-10
Excellent reference on correct structure of the Golden. Interesting documentation of similarities and differences of standards between the American Kennel Club and the Kennel Club of Britain. Great history about the successful kennels and which ones developed which lines and how the foundations of the breed developed in the UK, North America, Canada and the rest of the world.

An eclectic and insightful collection of articles.......2001-06-13
Who's going to read a review of an out-of-print book? But "Sitting With Job" deserves to have some stars next to its title. I used this book in an excellent class on the book of Job at Biola University taught by my favorite professor there, Dr. Ed Curtis.
The Articles in the book are arranged in two parts. Part I includes 12 articles under the heading "Overviews of the Book of Job". David Clines and Philip Yancey have excellent articles in that section.
Part II includes 22 articles under the heading "Specific Themes and Passages in the Book of Job". These articles cover topics like "Mythology and the Book of Job; "Where Job's Comforters Went Wrong"; "Wisdom in the Book of Job"; "The Theophany of Job"; and "Job: Repentant or Rebellious." Mark Littleton's article is among the best in this section.
No other book that I've seen offers such a broad and deep presentation of the structure and meaning of the book of Job. Zuck brings together authors who are not satisfied to simply describe the superficial landscape of Job, but who are also willing to wrestle with the thorny issues that it raises.

Book Description
Filling a gap in Christian literature for sermons based on the Old Testament from a Christian perspective, For God s Sake, Do Something! intentionally connects the Old Testament with issues of current spiritual and theological interest in the contemporary church. The author combines good homiletical technique with sensitivity to the deeper theological and exegetical concerns of the biblical text. Each sermon passage, offering a fresh, new translation of the ancient Scripture, has been carefully translated from the Hebrew original by the author. Pastors and lay ministers engaged in the preaching task will find these sermons useful for their own thinking and preparation in dealing with the topics they address. All Christians will find them both encouraging and challenging for their own devotional and spiritual life.

Past studies on criticism for present students........2005-04-13
This work collects articles that relate to the prophets and prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible. Though published in 2000 this book represents a collection of articles previously published by Vetus Testamentum, mostly during the last quarter of the twentieth century. The oldest is 1964, the most recent 1993, while the bulk are from the 70's and 80's. On the one hand this publication covers a broad range of topics because of the different scholarly contributors (19 articles by 18 authors). On the other hand it is limited by the date of the articles and by the nature of the scholars that contribute to VT.
The book makes available key studies on the prophets in a helpful, combined format. Generally authors take an exegetical approach while examining one book, or part of a book, and springboard to discussions relevant for the prophets in general. Articles focus on the major prophets and a number of the minor prophets.
The greater emphasis of the book is on form criticism and redaction criticism with some awareness of rhetorical criticism. Given the dates, it is understandable that there is less emphasis upon social science criticism, although both Carroll and Parker refer to data from anthropological studies. The greater void is any real consideration for studies that move toward the final form of the text. Certainly the final form is in view but canon criticism (or the like) is not. Even the fruits of rhetorical criticism do not move in that direction.
The book is most helpful in that it gathers statements from key scholars into one place for current students of the prophets. One is better prepared by knowing something about the development of historical criticism and key scholars than reading this book for such information. It is, rather, an illustration of their individual views. Subjects that cross the articles are the differences between pre-classical and classical prophecy, distinguishing true from false prophecy, genre analysis and the formation of prophetic literature.
The book is recommended as supportive reading in the historical critical analysis of the prophets. Recommended are the articles by Zimmerli and Gitay, and weakest, in the opinion of this reviewer, are Weinfeld, who struggles to differentiate form and function, and Haran, whose analysis is very subjective. The indexes of names and Scripture references are helpful additions.

Book Description
The Christian Hebraists selected for examination are: Andrew of St. Victor, William Fulke, Gregory Martin, Richard Simon and Alexander Geddes, all of whom contributed in different ways to the reception of the Hebrew Bible in the Christian Church. All were strongly influenced by Jerome and Origen, who supplied the foundation on which subsequent study of the Hebrew Bible in the Christian Church rests. McKane is concerned with how the exercise of critical methods can be reconciled with the assumption that the Hebrew Bible is a Christian book. Focusing on these five Hebraists, each of whom had different influences and concerns, McKane reviews the shifts in the Church's understanding of the nature and authority of its scriptures, particularly the Old Testament. Thus he shows how the beginnings of the critical scholarship of modern times is connected with, and has grown out of, that change in understanding. This is the first book on this subject that draws together such fields of scholarship as patristics, biblical scholarship, and translation problems.

Book Description
This book is a tribute to Professor de Boer, the well-known Old Testamentarian of Leiden University who held the chair from 1938 till 1978. Not only was he involved in organizational and editorial work (I.S.S.O.T., Peshitta Institute, Vetus Testamentum etc.), but he was also an inspired and inspiring teacher and a subtle exegete of the Hebrew texts in which he was interested. In this volume, originally intended as a message of congratulation for his 80th birthday (June 14, 1990) around twenty of his own lectures and articles are presented here which previously were less accessible, because, for instance, they were written in Dutch. All the collected studies are now published in English apart from two in German and two in French. They cover the whole of his scholarly life, from his inaugural address on "Kingship in Ancient Israel" (1938) to his contribution about Psalm lxxxi 6a, to the Festschrift for G.W. Ahlstrom (1984). The volume is concluded with a bibliography comprising all Professor de Boer's publications concerning the Old Testament and related scholarly subjects.

Book Description
This work contains selected essays dealing with the Jewish Literature of the Second Temple period, focusing around central themes of recent research. Stone's varied interests are reflected in this book, gathered around four main themes. Under the title "Enoch and the Testaments" are assembled studies which present and draw the implications from recent discoveries (including the Dead Sea Scrolls) as they modify the view of these two pivotal documents of ancient Judaism. Another focus of Stone's work has been 4 Ezra or 2 Esdras, a work reflecting the situation of Judaism, and especially to the understanding of apocalypticism, form a third section of the present work, while the particular development of apocryphal literature in Armenian is its fourth division. This work presents a range of significant studies in areas standing at the forefront of the study of Ancient Judaism.
