Book Description

The Tevis Cup, a 100-mile endurance ride through the Crystal Range of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, is the granddaddy of endurance riding. It remains one of the best attended 100-mile endurance rides in the world, only recently surpassed by those in the Middle East offering monetary prizes.

Endurance riding is recognized as one of the seven international equestrian disciplines, and much of the early organization of the sport arose from the Tevis Cup itself. Endurance riding tests a horse and rider over a long distance of usually 50 or 100 miles within a time limit of 12 to 24 hours.

For the past 46 years, 250 riders from all over the world gather annually to test their mettle and that of their horses at the Tevis Cup. The race is not only an equestrian competition--it's a slice of Americana in that it represents the pioneer spirit of the Old West.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read.......2005-02-23

I thought this book was a very enjoyable read. The history was very interesting and answered some of the questions I had always had about this incredible ride.

I rode all 100 miles of this trail during a training seminar in the mid-1980s. I was hoping to read something about these training sessions, but there was no mention of them. However, it did bring all the memories of that incredible experience back to me.

I would have liked it longer with a story for each winner, but you can't have everything. Worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Hail to the Tevis Cup Ride!.......2004-02-29

It's a pity that the "a reader from Mountain View, CA" author chooses to remain anonymous while making a harebrained remark about this terrific book. Marnye Langer has spent years covering the Tevis Cup Ride and depicts the big picture very well. I say feel free to write your own version of the Tevis Cup Ride and see how close you can get to the factual bulls eye.

To date this is the best account of the Tevis Cup Ride, the granddaddy of the entire sport of Endurance Riding, and the inspiration for Auburn, California as the Endurance Capital of the World.

2 out of 5 stars Check your facts please.......2004-02-02

I was excited to buy this book and was fascinated by most of the early historical perspective.

Most endurance riders will recognize the 2003 Haggin and Tevis Cup horse, Split, is Master Motion. Red is Crystals Charm, NOT "Major Motion". "Major Motion" does not exist.

These facts are so easy to verify just by checking the AERC records (or just ask any endurance rider), there is no reason for these errors. Just ruined the whole book for me because the veracity of the rest of the book is suspect.

4 out of 5 stars A Galloping Read!.......2004-01-16

I didn't think I would get into this but the book took me on a fabulous journey! I could not put it down. I felt like I was a part of this and wanted to win it with the people I was reading about. These riders are the ultimate survivors. You won't regret this read!

          Book Description

Of the many practitioners of art nouveau in Great Britain, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) has outlasted them all. His work bridged the more ornate style of the later nineteenth century and the forms of international modernism that followed. Like Frank Lloyd Wright, with whom he is frequently compared, Mackintosh is known for so thoroughly integrating art and decoration that the two became inseparable. His work has been honored by a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his designs have proliferated to such an extent that they can be found reproduced in posters, prints, jewelry, and even new buildings. His most important project was the Glasgow School of Art, which still functions as a highly prestigious art school. This glorious building is visited each year by thousands of tourists from around the world. Built over a dozen years, beginning in 1897, the Glasgow School of Art is Mackintosh's greatest and most influential legacy.

This completely redesigned and lavishly illustrated edition of Mackintosh's Masterwork has been greatly expanded and contains newly discovered material about both the early life of the architect and the formative years in which his plans for the School of Art were executed.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) was and remains the most distinguished figure of what was known as the Glasgow School. An architect, decorator, graphic artist, painter and furniture designer, Mackintosh was known for combining the prosaic with the sumptuous, the severe with the romantic. This collection of essays examines his work in relation to the character of Glasgow and other artistic developments of the era. It also considers his contributions, and those of his wife and associates, to the cultural vibrancy of their city.

              Book Description

The Glaswegian architect, designer, and painter was a man ahead of his time. His work, as imaginative and original as other artists and architects of the Art Nouveau period, also extended in other directions and became an inspiration to aspiring artists. In his own time and environment, however, Mackintosh was largely ignored. Under Francis Newberry, the director of the Glasgow School of Art, a talented nucleus of artists was established whose work gained recognition throughout Europe. Mackintosh became a draftsman in the firm of Honeyman & Keppie, later becoming a partner and designing the modern Glasgow School of Art. He also designed several modern interiors and the appropriate furniture for them. Mackintosh finally moved to France, where he dedicated himself to painting a remarkable series of original works that have become as highly prized as his furniture pieces and other designs.

                Book Description

Charles Rennie Mackintosh's (Scottish, 1868-1928) textile designs are not widely known—unlike his architecture, furniture, and watercolors. Fortunately, many of his original drawings for textile designs, made between 1915 and 1923, have survived and are presented in this book, an expanded and revised edition of Mackintosh: Textile Designs (John Murray, 1982). Roger Billcliffe is a noted expert on Scottish art and on Mackintosh in particular. His previous books include Mackintosh Watercolours (Taplinger, 1978); Charles Rennie Mackintosh: The Complete Furniture, Furniture Drawings and Interior Designs (Taplinger, 1979), and Mackintosh Furniture (1984).

                112 pages, 90 full-color reproductions, size: 9 x 11 1/2". Casebound book with dust jacket.

                    Book Description

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (Glasgow 1868-Londres 1928), Scottish architect and designer, had a great influence on twentieth century architecture and decoration. He graduated from the Glasgow School of Art but soon abandoned the affected Victorian style to embrace one based on simplicity and geometrical shapes. The project for the Glasgow School of Art (1897-1899) established his reputation. This rationalist building juxtaposes long, delicate curves against its rectangular structure; it was extended by adding a library (1907-1909). Mackintosh is also famous for his interior design and furniture creations, which combined traditional Scottish elements with the subtlety of the Art Nouveau movement. His influence can be seen on the designers of the Secession of Vienna, and on the development of the Modern Movement. Despite his success he virtually ceased to practice architecture and turned to watercolor painting.

I just returned from Glasgow and this delightful book - brand new - is being sold for 10 pounds in all the gift shops, at the Mackintosh House and at the Glasgow School of Art. Why are used copies being sold for so much on Amazon?

I ordered this book and received a tiny, 32 page, gift book instead. When I contacted the seller they asked that I return the gift book. 1) I returned the book, was reimbursed for the original order, but was never reminbursed for the postage to return the book. 2) This seller continues to advertise a book they evidently do not have to sell. This is bait and switch. 3) In response to my Amazon A-Z Claim I receive a form email stating I have been reimbursed and my claim is closed. Amazon has just lost a very good customer.

Glasgow is as far North as Moscow. In the time of Charles Rennie Mackintosh it was a tough, smokey, industrial city still living in the shadow of centuries of Scottish Puritanism. Not exactly the most promising environment you would think for an artistic movement that created the works of exquisite beauty presented in this book.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh, with a tight-knit group of fellow artists known as the Glasgow School, ensured that Glasgow at the turn of the century was an integral part of the international Art Nouveau movement, that was also flourishing in Paris and Vienna. The Art Nouveau movement is now seen as a major watershed in global culture because it was the first major art movement that drew inspiration equally from East and West.

As art evolved away from representative art, spiritual aspects came more into play. As with the Secessionist in Vienna, the German Expressionist, and the French Symbolists, mystical ideas became increasingly prominent, turning much of this art into a kind of ouija-board farce. The ghostly and heavily-symbolic works of the other members of the Glasgow School earned them the nickname of the "Spook School" and saw them marginalized.

But while much of the painting of the time reflects the faux spirituality of misunderstood oriental mysticism and sham seances, Mackintosh's work was distinguished by his deep, instinctive understanding of Oriental aesthetics, expressed unpretentiously in beautiful lines. This gave him the Midas touch at whatever he turned his hand to.

In his painting, posters, stained glass windows, furniture, and architecture, we can see the masterly interplay of straight and curved lines. Although John McKean's rather pedantic text in the book doesn't really emphasise this point enough, what we in fact experience in the stimulating tension between Mackintosh's straight and curved lines, is no less than a fusion of yin and yang, the 'female' and 'male' components of the Universe.

Fighting an uphill struggle in a city that didnÕt really understand his unique aesthetic, Mackintosh still managed to do an impressive amount of work as Colin Baxter's excellent pictures reveal. The greatest fulfillment of his art is in 3-D work, especially his furniture designs, which are notoriously difficult to photograph well, although here Baxter does a good job.

It was with furniture, especially in his many chair designs, that he most fulfilled his aesthetic. While most furniture designers of the period gave into the yin or the 'feminine,' with over-elaborate curves and rich decoration, creating a heavy effect, Mackintosh played these 'feminine' aspects off against the yang or 'masculine' by emphasizing simplicity and straightness, creating an uplifting tension that was not only beautiful in itself but also interacted with the curvature of the human form.

While much of Art Nouveau art and design is forever anchored in the historical period that created it, the work of Mackintosh continues to float with us into the future.
